DI Sam Cobb walks into her home to find her husband gone. No note, no explanation, nothing, just Not there. And days go by with no call to her, no message to let her know...Ok, well, she has her job to keep her busy, but what a gut punch to keep locked inside of her. Then a man is found on his ship, tortured and murdered, a horrific crime that has Sam rounding up her partner and Team to investigate. Soon another body is found killed in a sickening way, putting intense pressure on the Team to solve the cases, with people in the area starting to feel fear that it could happen to them.
Sam has partner Bob with her every step of the way, no matter their silly talk he has her back in life and on the job. With twists at every turn, she is able to keep pushing on with her dedicated Team, finding a story of loss, lies and sad circumstances that send people to do the unthinkable. This book can be tough to read, the author always pulls no punches in describing anything that people do, including to each other. But among the darkness we see a light on the horizon, and DI Sam, Detective Bob and the whole Team keep that light shining by always thinking of the residents they work for.

This is the third book in the DI Sam Cobbs series and another great read!

I thought the opening was great and had me fully intrigued as it had my mind racing as to why this man had been killed. All sorts of scenarios were running through my head and when another body is found, you just know it is going to be a hard case to crack.

There is quite a bit going on in Sam’s personal life with her husband Chris still being awol. It was good to get to see a bit more of her family network as well as how her partner Bob has got her back. I have to say I didn’t envy Bob in this story as he is put in a couple of very awkward situations of which I have no idea what I would do if I had been in his shoes!

To Make Them Pay grabs you from the first few pages. The pacing ensured that I was hooked throughout and I enjoyed the thrilling journey the author took me on. It’s one that will leave you with mixed emotions with regards to who is behind the killings as I did find myself having some empathy at times. I’m really enjoying this series and have grown very fond of Sam and Bob who don’t always see eye to eye but make a great team. A crime series with a heart!

My thanks to the author for an advanced readers copy of this book. All opinions are my own and not biased in anyway.

Book 3 was another great read - still really enjoying this series!

This one was interesting as we’re told who the killers are early on and get to follow along as Sam and the team put the pieces together. Lots of background with some interesting motives and twists!

As always, the story balances the investigation with drama and romance - it was great to see how things are going now Chris is finally out of the picture! (Side note: What a bastard.)

Loved the shout out to Wainwright bagging too as a bagger myself!

Quick read but plenty of entertainment. Let’s go, book 4!

I struggled through the book to the end, but it wasn't a fun slog. The dialogue is really below par. The author needs to sit in a coffee shop and write down the conversation at the next table to practice. Dialogue does not happen like this (making this up, but you'll get what I'm saying)
Dan, "Mark, hello. How are you?"
M, "I'm fine, Dan. How are you?"
D, "Well, we are meeting today."
M, "That's great, Dan. I've known you for twenty years. So, why are we talking like this?"
Anyway, the dialogue is so bad it distracts from an otherwise good story.

DI Sam Cobbs and her partner DS Bob Jones are called to a crime scene at the harbour where a man called Brian Coltman has been murdered on his boat. Sam managed to track down some CCTV from a shop that showed Brian with a man helping him back to his boat then a few minutes later, a man dressed all in black hopped onto the boat. He was most probably the killer. Sam made a TV appeal to try and find Brian’s drinking partner and mate from the night he died.

A few days later, Sam gets a call from Des Markham, the pathologist, at another crime scene inviting her along. When she gets there, she has never seen anything so bad, a taxi driver has been dragged behind his taxi. When Bob checks with his office, his name is Ed Abbott and his last fare was a female passenger. She was collected about midnight.

Sam goes back to her team with the little information she has and treats the deaths as individual cases. She splits the team in two so they have a case each and goes through all the details of each case with the knowledge they have so far. The tasks are handed out and she leaves them to it thinking she is looking for two murderers.

Why were these men targeted and murdered? Did the female do it alone or did she have help? How did they subdue the taxi driver to get him to comply with being tied up?

I really enjoyed reading this book which was dark and well written by the author. It has very descriptive writing describing the scenes and you can let your imagination do the rest! DI Sam Cobbs and her team are great and really good, I like them and they help to make the book as good as it is. There is a side story with Sam and her home life but it is in addition to the main storyline. This is a great new series.

Wow, what an amazing third book in the series!

This author never fails to keep readers in suspense until the very end.

This series just gets better with each book, and Book Three is no exception. Gripping, with more twists and turns than a rattlesnake.

Brian and his friend are enjoying a drink at one of their local pubs but Brian has just had that one too many. Ian decides to see his friend safely home and takes him to his boat, moored a short distance away, before leaving his friend and returning home himself.

Later, Brian is found dead under suspicious circumstances and Sam and Bob are called to the scene.

Although there are shops nearby nobody seems to have seen Brian return home and Sam and her team have little to go on.

Nobody at the pub seems to know anything about Ian, other than he appears to be a friend of Brian’s.

Meanwhile, Sam’s husband has walked out on her without so much as a goodbye and no forwarding address. He appears to have simply disappeared.

Whilst Sam ponders over her husband’s sudden disappearance and she, Bob and the team concentrate their efforts on finding clues as to who Ian is and the reason behind Brian’s brutal murder, another body turns up. As there is not another team available, Sam has no option but to take on the second case, as well.

From here on in the tension builds, the story expands and evolves with shocking revelations, and some surprises, none of which I was expecting. To say more would truly spoil an amazing story.

Very Highly Recommended

This is the third outing for DI Sam Cobbs so, as per usual, to get the best out of it, I'd recommend starting from book one. Although the main story is, as usual, self contained, there'e a bit of background and character development you'll be missing out on if you don't.
So... we start with a nasty crime. Brian is brutally murdered on his boat after a night out. Sam and her team are called in to investigate. But, as per usual, initially there isn't much to go on, bar some sketchy CCTV, let alone a motive. But it all feels a bit personal, due to the nature of the death. Talking about personal, Sam has quite a bit on her plate there with the disappearance of her husband, walking out and with no further contact. Bit she has her partner Bob to help, having her back personally and professionally so, hopefully it won't be long before they crack the case. Until there's another body...
This book contains everything I have grown to know, love, and rely on from this author. A cracking plot, expertly executed. A great cast of characters however big their part, series or episode alike, all well drawn and act their parts with aplomb. Pacing matches the narrative all the way through and with no superfluous waffle or padding, the story gets on with itself very well indeed! Interspersed with some cracking banter and observations often delivered in the author's now famous tongue in cheek way. All culminating in a shocking but credible, wholly satisfying conclusion.
All that's left to say is roll on next time....

This is book 3 in the DI Sam Cobbs, A Lake District thriller series and this is definitely the darkest of the series so far and my favourite. Written in the authors trademark style this was a quick, easy read that I finished in a day. So keen was I to reach the conclusion.

Briefly, when Sam and her partner DS Bob Jones are called to a murder on a boat they didn’t expect to find a man tortured and then murdered. Before the ink is cold on their reports another body is found, a taxi driver killed by being tied to a car and dragged along behind it. As the body count mounts they begin to think the murders are connected. Is there a serial killer at large? Meanwhile, Sam’s husband Chris is still missing, not contacting her since he left their home, and she hasn’t heard from Rhys, her potential new ‘love interest’.

I really enjoyed the darker and more violent bent to this story, although it was not gratuitously so. But it certainly doesn’t warrant the cozy mystery tag I have attributed to previous of this authors books. The banter between Sam and Bob is sometimes a bit sharp but you can see they have each other’s backs, at work and personally. A tense and suspenseful read. Very good ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Starting this book I felt so sad for Sam as it seems that a lot happened to her and Chris was no longer around.

I really enjoy the writing style and the characters that are part of the books. I think this author really has it dialed in with the perfect mix between the characters and the story.

This story feels so different then her other stories of Sam. I see a huge heartbreak in Sam and it makes me want to go and comfort her. I don't feel this way in most books even with Lorne when her marriage broke down. This just is more emotional.

The setting is great. And I love seeing all the interesting places we see. I kind of like that the crime happened differently and love the boat aspect.

I smile everytime they do a scene with Sonny. He just makes me laugh. He is to me the comedic relief so you don't take yourself to seriously.

It feels like this is the perfect revenge story but it feels that it's not for anything big and it's a petty item for the revenge.

The book made me feel so happy that I had read it. It isn't what you would call comfortable to read but I like the warped and sick moments. I also like that it's not really showing all the gruesome bits but you get enough to keep you happy that they are there.

Lies and consequences.

So how often do people lie, exaggerate, tell a 'Porkie'? Too often, but frequently to protect someone's feeling , others do it for sympathy.
This is the story of someone, mentally ill as a result of a rotten childhood, who tells lies and someone close to her believes them.
He wants those who hurt her to suffer and pay with their lives for the abuse she has told him about.
They leave DNA,fingerprints and footprints. Tyre tracks have moulds cast and they are from a Peugeot spotted near the last crime scene .
In the meantime, Sara has reached the end of her tether with husband, Chris. The marriage is broken and he disappears whilst she is at work. Initially concerned, she puts it down to his excessive drinking and irrational ideas. She later finds out the truth and she vows payback.
Excellent storyline, three threads for the price of one, substories galore, all tied up in a bow.

DI Sam Cobbs has a full plate with To Make Them Pay. A missing husband and brutal murders. All men, and from the accounts of those who knew them good men. So why is someone killing them?

I love the way Ms. Comley allows us to see the story from all sides. We meet the victims, the killers, and the feel the frustration of her team as clues are sparse and the body count rises. One thing becomes apparent--she has a jewel of a partner in Bob. Both as a detective and a good friend.

We also meet the killers and see inside their heads, their motives, their fears and their dedication to each other. All this makes for a fantastic story that I couldn’t put down.

Highly recommended to those who love crime thrillers with a bit of mystery/romance and intrigue.

I read the summary to this book and looked at previous reviews, and was looking forward to reading it. I have to say it is the worse book I’ve read in a long time. Set in the “Lake district”. - nothing other than a few town name drops. Poor plot - Hard to think it got averages of over 4. But worst of all the dialogue is so unreal, do people actually talk like that, not in my world. I don’t normally leave bad reviews other than just scoring. But I feel there are too many positive reviews, they all must have seen something I didn’t. Anyway make up your own minds.

As per usual if you are a fan of M A Comley you know she will please. I was drawn into the characters and worried about some of them, not giving the names as you might think the way I did. I am glad that Sam is becoming well rounded with the support of friends and family. I think the team is working well together and I look forward to the next book in the series. Thank you as always for a fun ride!

Men are meeting gruesome ends but with different MOs and no apparent links between them, could they possibly be connected? With Sam’s personal life in turmoil can she, her trusted sidekick Bob and the rest of her team identify the culprits and bring them to justice? A story of lies and deceit with good twists at the end. Another fantastic read from MA Comley and I can’t wait for number 4 to see how Sam’s life evolves.

DI Sam Cobbs is called in because a body has been discovered on a boat. While her team in investigating, there are two more murders--could they all be connected? What kind of psychopath could have committed these horrific crimes, and why? The reader is able to follow along with the murderer and his twisted reasoning. Sam's personal life isn't great since her husband has vanished without a word, but she doesn't let that interfere with working hard to solve these crimes.

I am absolutely loving these books. Sam is a fab character, back bone and each book she just gets more & more human.
Trouble at home can’t stop her forward attitude at work. She won’t let things go and refuses to not keep on the case. Frustrated at times, horrified at times, an excellent series building up more & more

Hopefully life gets settled,

For DI Sam now. I preferred the old Sam, without the anger and bickering! But the good thing was they won the fight against the bad guys, so that all that matters in the end!

Just Don’t!!

This was a complete waste of my time. I’m accustomed to some degree of surprise/suspense in books that are billed as “thrillers”. I’m giving you the gift of time in telling you not to bother reading this book.
