Presumed Dead is Kendric and Campbell’s story as they attempt to trace a pregnant woman who is missing.
In Book Four of Defenders of Battle Mountain, a deranged killer needs to be caught even as personal grudges and past lives entangle.
Trigger Warning: Brutal sexual assault in the past Warning: This is the fourth book in a series and has spoilers for the first three.
Synopsis: Campbell Dwyer is an agent with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. She's been tasked with searching for a pregnant woman who seems to have been kidnapped from her home in Battle Mountain.
Kendric Hudson started working with the Battle Mountain Police Department after the last event that happened there felt like a personal failure. But the last thing he wanted was another blast from the past.
Review: Seeing that the small town has been plagued with incidents, one after the other, Campbell is the newest, but temporary, addition to the small town, or so she says, to help solve the newest case. But her motive seems to be something else.
Presumed Dead is a second-chance romance, and it had one of the best surprises that wasn't even hinted at in the blurb! I was over the moon when I read about Kendric and Campbell's past.
We were introduced to Kendric Hudson in the previous book, fleetingly, and now he's there along with Cree, the protagonist from that same book.
The story has so many twists, one after the other. What you think is definitely not what you will get when you reach the end.
It all comes to a close and ends with a final bang. But it is an adorable happy ever after.
P.S. The epilogue properly introduces the EMT from the Battle Mountain Fire and Rescue, Isla Vach, whose story is next in the series.
Oh i loved it!!! Battle Mountain is a great rural city but suffered a lot in the past months and it's one of the reasons Kendrick decided to leave ATF and join their police force to help rebuilt the city and protect it. He suffered greatly also and found a family in battle mountain who does not care for his scars (physical and non physical) so he want to give back to them. When a pregnant woman disappear he is dettermined to find and save her....but he did not expect to see Campbell Dwyer again and even less she her joint his investigation.
Campbell comes at Battle Mountain to help find a missing peron but it's not the only reason or even the main one...still she must keep her secret even if seeing Kendrick bring back happy memories and hopes.....her secrets could mean loosing him forever and endangering the investigation but the more time they spend together the more battle mountain magic works on her.
I loved this investigation!!!! really this was great and i loved to see all the group works together . the suspense was big, lot of action, romance and some sweet moments.
really this is a great instalment, can be read as stand alone but i do recommend you to read the whole series in order it's much better.
I volunteered to read and review an advanced readers copy of Presumed Dead . Wow ! What an Outstanding Suspense Romance . It's action packed from start to finish . A real rollercoaster ride . Reserved Officer Kendric Hudson is surprised to find missing person Agent Campbell Dwyer at his latest case . The two have a past together and Campbell has a few secrets as the danger increases the secrets she has comes to light . This story is well written and the characters are fantastic . I highly recommend taking the time to read .
This is another great addition to the Battle Mountain Saga a small town that has more than it's fair share of trouble and strife This is where badly injured Kendric Hudson has found a new home He first came to visit his friend Cree Grayson who is the hero of the previous book Dead on Arrival. Both where explosive experts but a mishap has left Kendric scarred both physically and mentally and he has walked away from the woman he loves. Now he is a reserve officer and they have a serious problem with an abduction and outside help as been sent That help is non other than missing persons agent Campbell Dwyer the woman that Kendric loved and left She has more than one reason for been in Battle Mountain Kendric been one the job the other but she is also keeping a secret that he may never forgive her for. Can they stay alive and can they have a future You will have to read to see
This return to Battle Mountain seems at first glance to be a little tamer than the previous stories. After all, this time we're looking at just a missing person. Or are we? But then there is added complication of Kendric and Campbell having been in a relationship in the past. And while they are trying to solve the case, they are also dealing with what went wrong 5 years ago. The action is non-stop with many twists and turns along the way. Even with all this, one thing is certain - neither Kendric nor Campbell will be stopped when a loved one is in danger.
I seriously can't get enough of Nicole Severn's intriguing and action packed stories!!! Her ability to keep you on the edge throughout the entire book is the best feeling ever!!! Wonderful characters and settings that feel like you can reach out and touch them!!! Kendric and Cambell definitely have their work cut out for them in more ways than a second chance at love..... an incredible story that I definitely recommend!!!
Another good instalment in the series, hard to put down and nail-bitingly thrilling.
I love how this is not just a police thriller, it is a story about being lost and then finding yourself thru true love. Not just romantic love, but a parent's love, fighting tooth and nail, with unbelievable grit and determination to save that which she loves most.
Also, a new layer from the mystery binding the series together is being unraveled - I can't wait for what's next!
Another nail biting story in Nichole Severn's fabulous "Defenders of Battle Mountain" series. Battle Mountain was a sleepy mountain town, the locals are friendly and the police department was like one big family, although it wasn't so big, they had few officers and little in the way of resources but reserve officer Kendrick Hudson was settled there, he had left his job as a city agent after a tragic accident had left him badly scarred, he felt as though there was no support and the partner that he loved was rejecting him, was it the scars that repulsed her or had she just fallen out of love, Kendrick didn't wait to find out, he walked. Battle Mountain PD were stretched to the limit, there had been so many serious incidents in such a short time and now another shooting. Kendrick's blood ran cold when a voice that he hadn't heard for six years piped up in the briefing, Agent Campbell Dwyer, the love of his life, the one he had walked out on, the one who's calls he wouldn't take, the one that he had never forgotten. There was a psychic killer on the loose, always one step ahead of them, Campbell had been sent to assist in the investigation.......or had she ? Campbell had two secrets that she was dreading revealing to Kendrick, he would hate her. The body count escalates, the clues are dead ends, frustration adds to the mistrust that these two have for one another but the spark is reignited. This story is a roller coaster journey for Campbell and Kendrick, who was the shooter ? who was the woman in the wood ? did the killer have access to inside information ? would Kendrick hate her when her secrets were revealed ? Both lives were in danger, would this be the test of their love ? This book is action packed, with edge of your seat suspense, their journey is fraught with danger, is the destination is worth it ? I am so looking forward to the next book in this series. I received a free copy of this book and my review is voluntary.
This second chance suspenseful adventure is certainly a page turning adventure. Campbell is sent to this small town to find out if there is corruption there. For such a small town there are a lot of crazies killing people.
Battle Mountain had become a hunting ground for the worst kinds of criminals, and their missing victim had just been the latest in a long line of reasons why she’d been assigned to take a look.
Kendric left her without a word. She had a huge secret she tried to share with him but he wouldn’t communicate with her at all.
“Talking to yourself again?” Kendric’s deep tone resonated
“The voices in my head get cranky if I don’t answer.”
This series is is another reason I love this authors work.
Presumed Dead (Defenders of Battle Mountain Book 4) Nichole Severn
Another Battle Mountain story of goodness versus evil. This time Kendric Hudson has to face his past and except that he needs to overcome it in order to have a future. Campbell Dwyer, from his past has supposedly come to help find a missing person that is connected to a killing and shooting. But are things actually what they seem? As Kendric works the case will he be able to put his past to rest or will it destroy his future happiness. An action pact read from beginning to end. An addition to a great free standing series of dedicated law officers who protect and serve their small community. A late night read.
Kendrick and Campbell had been close and in love in Denver. When Kendrick went to the small mountain in Colorado to help find a bomber, he had ended up as a victim of the bomber. I hated that he thought because one side of his face had been burned, and he hadn’t know the killer was right in front of him that he wasn’t good for anyone, even Campbell. He ended up leaving and working in the mountain town without ever answering any of Campbell’s calls to him, and now she is in his town to help find a pregnant woman who was kidnapped. The tension between the two while they were working was always there. The case they were working on, sent them in a couple different directions. It was exciting what the two went through. Campbell also ended up telling him about a secret she had that rocked his world. The adventures the two went through were nail biters. This was an exciting book that I strongly encourage you to read. I was given a copy and voluntarily wrote a review.
Another heart racing, nail biter in the Defenders of Battle Mountain series brings Kendrick face to face with the woman he loved. When the case that brought Campbell to the sleepy little town that seems to be a magnet for killers turns eyes on her will Kendrick be able to protect and save her or does he let the secrets she's been keeping destroy him. If you love your romance filled with page turner excitement, murder and mayhem and past loves coming back to haunt then grab this heart racer!! ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
We are back in Battle Mountain with the men and women that have left their previous lives to become the defenders of their little town. A town that recently has been plagued with bad situations and people. But they are determined and ready to right the wrong. A recent addition to the group is former AFT officer Kendric Hudson, nowadays a reserve officer. A man that suffered third degree burns in his last mission and shortly after broke up with the only woman he loved in order to set her free of him. That woman is Campbell Dwyer, a missing persons agent who has secretly come to Battle Mountain for a different reason than to find a missing woman. She also has kept a huge secret from Kendric. In the midst of the secrets, and the lack of trust , this action packed story keeps you on the edge of your seats wondering the “whodunit” as well as wondering if these two will live to find their way back together, or even if they do, will they turn away from their HEA. This was a great addition to the series. The author leaves a hint as to which character will get their story. I was entrusted a copy of this book. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
An unexpected reunion sets the stage for drama and intrigue as the Defenders of Battle Mountain series continues. The characters are intriguing and their secrets make for a compelling story. I wanted a slight bit more development in a couple of spots but overall a solid read and a wild ride to completion.
I highly recommend this book as well as the entire series to anyone who enjoys an action packed story that is fast paced and packed with intrigue and hints of romance.
Loved this book from beginning to end. Another winner by Ms. Severn. This is book 4 in Defenders of Battle Mountain. Reserve Officer Kendrick Hudson leaves Denver and Campbell Dwyer someone who he loved. It’s was in everyone’s best interest he leave. While His best friend Cree Grayson went to Battle Mountain. Kendrick came to check in with his best friend. A former colleague came unhinged to say the least. He never thought he’d stay either. In the end something drew him in. He knew this town was is saving grace. He couldn’t go back to his former life. He liked in Battle Mountain until he saw Campbell Dwyer. In the middle of a crime scene. She shows him she indeed is supposed to be there. There were going to be partners again. But things she told him changed. However when he found out the truth of why she was there that not good. He found out by accident too.
Presumed Dead A Harlequin Intrigue Defenders of Battle Mountain Nichole Severn “They’d made one hell of a team.” But that was 5 years past, before the breakup, before he had moved to the middle of nowhere. Battle Mountain seems to be one of the unluckiest places to choose to live! In this instalment a heavily pregnant mother is kidnapped kicking off a mystery to solve. The suspense builds and just when you think you have an inkling of the truth there are complete surprises and twists that expertly heighten the story. Kendrick and Campbell are both hiding, holding back from each other and the world. A thrilling romantic suspense from the Battle Mountain series. It could be read as a stand-alone novel with hea but I think this series is best read in order. I received an arc of this book. 5 stars
Campbell arrives in Battle Mountain undercover with internal affairs and has to work alongside her previous partner and lover Kendric. They have a difficult history but must work together on a case that twists and turns. Nothing is as it first seems and soon danger is round every corner. A fast paced action packed book with strong characters and a great storyline. Loved it. I received an early copy from the author and have chosen to leave a review.
The bullets keep on flying. Non-stop action on every page keeps you turning them as quickly as possible. Twists and turns that have twists of their own, will have your head spinning, trying to figure out what will happen next. Hold on tight. This roller-coaster ride is going to get bumby. I am voluntarily leaving a review after receiving an ARC.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. Campbell and Kendrick loved and lost each other quite some time ago. Now, five yrs. later they meet again - to investigate a missing person case together. Lies, insecurities and secrets threaten to rip them apart. Even so, before a phsycopath starts their game. Another fabuous book in the BM-series. Great book.
Terrific blend of second chance romance and suspense that kept me glued to the pages from start to finish. Kendric is Battle Mountain's newest reserve officer. A former coworker of Cree's (Dead on Arrival), he was injured in the same blast that hurt Cree. Scarred physically and emotionally, Kendric walked away from his life in Denver, including the woman he loved. He's found a home and family in the close-knit Battle Mountain Police Department and community and is determined to do his best to serve them. Then a missing persons case brings a blast from his past, and his new life is turned upside down.
Campbell has been sent from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation to augment BMPD's tiny force during this case. She has an outstanding record of success in her cases. But there is more to Campbell's presence in Battle Mountain than meets the eye.
The sparks fly between Kendric and Campbell from the moment she appears. She makes snarky comments about him burying himself in the backwoods, and he digs at her laser focus on cases to the exclusion of everything else. But neither can deny the attraction that still exists even after five years apart. Kendric is determined to ignore it. He believes his scars prevent a relationship that isn't based on pity. Campbell has secrets that could destroy any chance of a reconciliation. I liked watching them work together and seeing their respect for each other's abilities. They grow closer, but her secrets and his fears are obstacles that must be overcome before they have a chance at happiness. I liked the ending and seeing how everything worked out.
The suspense of the story was a roller coaster of twists and turns. A pregnant woman was abducted from her home in the middle of the night, and her husband was shot and left for dead. But as Kendric and Campbell dig deeper into their investigation, there are more questions than answers. Just when I thought I knew what was happening, the author flipped everything I thought I knew on its head. Then the bad guy makes the case personal for Campbell, and the tension goes through the roof. I was on the edge of my seat as Campbell went rogue and ended up in mortal danger. The final confrontation was a nail-biter that kept me turning the pages until it was over.
The revelation of Campbell's secrets did initially cause some strain between her and Kendric and between her and the rest of the BMPD. I ached for Kendric over the first secret and its effect on him. I could feel his anguish over it and rooted for Campbell to be able to break through the fears that held him back. The second secret involved the entire BMPD. I could understand why Campbell was sent to investigate, but having read the series from the beginning, I knew her bosses were barking up the wrong tree. I was glad that Campbell believed the truth pretty quickly.
Officer Kendic Hudson of Battle Mountain was forced to work on a case when the CBI was sent to investigate the case he was working. Detective/ Officer Campbell Dwyer. He had learned alot about this case . He didn't like working with Detective Dwyer. With past relationship with her it was difficult case for him. Between getting off the road and getting shot they both want to find the missing person case. Then finding out he had a daughter he was stay in Battle Mountain. Because he thought it was better off with out him. In the meantime Campbell was took hostage and Kenkic had to find Campbell. He got shot and still looking for Campbell and the missing person. Sabrina Byron who was chased out of the house. Byron's husband killed a partner and put two bullets in his chest. In the meantime Campbell broke into the Chief Fords office that was temporarily Battle Mountain Police Dept. To see what she could find. In the meantime Sabrina Byron come looking for help in the meantime Campbell's daughter is kidnapped. What happened to the daughter of Campbell? What happened to Officer Hudson and Detective/ Officer Dwyer? Nicole did a fantastic story that was great and kept me reading and finished in two days. That is how fantastic job she did. She made great characters together.

Another incredible page-turner from Nichole Severn! We're back in Battle Mountain (Book 4), one unlucky town that's under a serious dark cloud of trouble and danger (two serial killers and a whacked-out crazy ATF agent).
After the events of Book 3, Dead on Arrival, Kendric Hudson came to visit a friend, a man who saved his life when the explosive experts got caught up in an explosion. The explosion left Kendric scarred both physically and mentally and he ran, leaving his life and friends (including Campbell Dwyer, the woman he loved).
Five years later Kendric has found a new life and a police department that felt like family, although small and with very few resources. At the scene of a kidnapping and shooting, he sees Campbell Dwyer. Campbell is there to help with the case. As Kendric and Campbell work to solve the case and rekindle their romance, the danger increases and Campbell has secrets that could derail everything.
This book has many twists and turns and surprises. Campbell and Kendric are wonderful together. I loved this book immensely! Thank you, Nichole, for another awesome book!
I voluntarily reviewed a copy of "PRESUMED DEAD" What a rollercoaster ride of emotional turmoil, suspense, intrigue, danger, angst, regret, scars, traumatic accident, secrets, psychotic killer, twists that have you on the edge of your seat. Kendrick & Campbell had once been in love in the city both Agents after a traumatic accident leaving him badly scared he left feeling like he had no support *the woman he loved was either falling out of love with him or was repulsed by his scars, a friend in Battle Mountain the man who saved his life after the explosion that caused his scars. Kendrick has worked in police department in Battle Mountain for 6yrs they make him feel like family when he goes out to shooting that had taken place he sees non other than Campbell Dwyer she'd been adked up help out with the investigation she's been keeping secrets from him. Kendrick & Campbell work the case to together become closer but she worries what will happen when he finds out about the secrets she kept from him, will these two get their HEA in the end I definitey recommend to get this amazing well written story to see what happens you so won't be disappointed a must read for sure.
Well Battle Mountain is recovering from the bombings. Though just hoping for some peace and quiet is not happening. There’s a killer on the loose. What’s a girl to do when she’s an outsider, and the investigation team makes it clear they don’t want her? Doesn’t help that one of them is her daughter’s father, and he doesn’t know it. As well as the fact she’s got a hidden agenda as well. Kendrick walked away from his previous life. It’s the only way he can cope with his PTSD. It’s not helping now that Campbell is on the team, and he’s got to live, and work with her. She might have been his past love, but he’s no good for anyone anymore. These two, and the team must sort themselves out and work together if they have any chance of resolving the case. Hopefully, without losing any of their own. This book has a good storyline that keeps you engaged. There’s plenty of action, twists, and a please let the villain get his comeuppance feel that keeps you reading till the end. Look forward to more in this series.
This is an intense romantic suspense involving two characters who had a live-in relationship until he chose to exit her life five years ago. They reconnect while working on a missing person/murder case, as they are both in law enforcement. The plot is filled with drama, secrets, deception, numerous twists and turns, emotional turmoil, and an abundance of tension. I appreciated the “red herrings” sprinkled throughout the story, which naturally caused me to strategize who is the criminal. The intense, riveting, explosive action scenes keeps drawing you into the story. The author’s expertise in describing action scenes was brilliant, once again. Her words form pictures and emotions. I was there with the characters, caught up in the intensity and double checking my seat belt. This incredible drama keeps pulsing on until the final conclusion, which has a “wow” finish. Fantastic story not to miss! I received a complimentary ARC, but I am voluntarily offering my personal opinion.
I’d suggest reading book 3 before book 4 to avoid any spoilers. It can be read as a standalone but you will have more information on the characters and will get to go through solving the mystery in book 3 yourself discovering what brought Kendrick to Battle Mountain before the summarization in Presumed Dead. This secret baby romance has lots of twists and turns that had me not wanting to put the book down until I finished. There is something about Battle Mountain that draws in the broken and helps them to heal but the problems from the past always seem not be far behind. I don’t know how each book in this series seems to keep me more and more captivated. I love the community that Nicole is building and how she doesn’t let things get predictable! Another great story in this series as more characters get introduced and their backgrounds are revealed! I'm waiting to see what happens next!
Severn’s books always give us a great thrill for our money. Her characters are invested in each other, their town, their cases and their families. Campbell and Kendrick, a former bomb tech that we met in the last book, have a bit of history together. Their relationship is tense and heated but they work through it while trying to solve the case. We have a missing pregnant woman, a deceased woman and a witness with a story that doesn’t quite add up. The people of Battle Mountain have been through hell with various murders, serial killers and crazy ATF agents. This poor town needs a break, but I’m not sure that’s in the cards yet. Each of these books in the series can be read by themselves but you will see familiar characters as they play a role in solving the case. I was lucky to get an early copy and have written my review voluntarily.
Wow Nichole Severn really delivers on this one. When there is trouble in an abduction case, ex explosive officer Kendric gets assigned a partner Campbell who he just happens to have history with. Smart, fresh, dangerous and a deep mystery in the small town leads them in a chase. This was so good. Such a fantastic story and the characters were the main thing that got me involved. I found this book to be well written, fills detail and a great plot. Fantastic book!!
We're back with the men and women of Battle Mountain. This town has seen its share of things going wrong from bombs going off to murders. Nichole has given us another great adventure with plenty of action, drama, murder, surprises, twists and turns that is fast paced to keep the reader going and not stopping till done. Kendrick and Campbell make for a great team trying to find their way back and maybe being a family.
Severns takes us back to Battle Mountain in Presumed Dead. This is a secret baby romantic suspense which I had a hard time with. Clearly the heroine knew where the hero was, so the explanation for why it was a secret baby was a little thin. This is a solid suspense, but there were some inconsistencies that threw me out of the story on occasion. Worth a read for fans of the series and fast paced suspense. 3.5 stars
