I have been interested in genealogy and knew the basics of DNA, but this added more meaning and magic to it for me. I feel more enthused about doing my own research and learning about my connections to my family and all people. It is also a very inclusive approach to genealogy that considers different kinds of families and family histories.

🧬 The topic of adoption was not handled with sensitivity and was often regarded as an obstacle to genealogy

🧬 Not a very welcoming book to people who do not practice magic

🧬 Some parts of the book have sexist undertones. While the author might not have meant anything bad when she talks about her mitochondrial maternal line ending with her daughters or her husband’s Y line ending, it has the potential for abuse. People might desire a certain gender to continue their genetic line/heritage. This can be a sexist, dangerous way of thinking. I was not happy to read about it in her book.
