The first novel in the heartwarming and gripping new Jubilee Lake series, from million-copy bestseller Anna Jacobs
Lancashire, 1895. When her controlling stepfather suddenly dies, it seems that Elinor Pendleton finally has a chance of freedom. But her hopes are soon dashed when she learns that the thuggish Jason Stafford has inherited every penny, and is determined to have Elinor too.
Forced to flee with her beloved maid, Maude, Elinor finds shelter with Maude's distant cousin in the remote village of Ollerthwaite, on the shore of Jubilee Lake.
But Walter Crossley has troubles of his own. Having lost his closest family in a tragic accident, he needs one of his grandsons to return from America to inherit his farm - and when practical, kindhearted Cameron arrives, he appears to be the perfect heir.
But is this young man everything he seems? And will Elinor's secret wish to have a family of her own ever come true...?

Anna Jacobs has 87 novels published as of April 2019. She writes historical sagas and modern novels alternately, and in the past has written historical romances and fantasy novels (the latter as Shannah Jay).

Anna reads 3 novels a week. Happy reading, everyone.
Almost too syrupy sweet. Books like these are kind of a buffer between all the historical fiction and crime novels that I love, but this was like a Hallmark movie in book form. There are two more in the series but I’ll live my life just fine without reading them.
One of a blind read. As a mood reader, I tend to just scan the book shelf and pick whichever it is that I want to read.
Unexpectedly, I liked how Anna wrote this one. Super easy to read as if hindi historical romance ang binabasa mo. Di ako nahihirapan umintindi ng words and all. Ang galing!
When I searched it sa GR, nakalagay is romance daw so I started it pero for me, it is more of a found family + slice of life kind of read. Mabigat yung latag ng salita pero maganda and nakakagana basahin (late lang talaga ako nagpost ng review), ganon.
Light romance started @ 58% tapos nasa around 7 chapters before ending ng story na yung next na romance feels nung book. No spice, very light and sweet lang.
I super love Walter's character (the grandparent) because not everyone has the same POV for life like him. He's very sweet and considerate. He'll fight for you if he had to and he gives everyone a chance to introduce themselves before he judges them. Very fair and loving.
All in all, maganda. Di ko inexpect na may magugustuhan ako sa ganitong genre.
I really liked the two lead characters and all of the others that entered the story later in the book, and I wanted them to do well. Lots of description of different elements of the characters early on in the book painted a picture of their lives, which was good. However, that also meant I knew exactly where the book was going before I turned the pages. No real surprises as to what was going to happen throughout the book, and no surprises how the characters developed, or how it would all end. In short, predictable. Very typical of the genre but that’s why it’s hugely popular and loved by so many. It’s the equivalent of a comfy well worn cardigan, you know you can wrap up in it, it won’t let you down, it’s just solidly giving you exactly what you need on those days you reach for it. Sadly not my cup of tea, but it will be a great read for fans of Anna Jacobs and the genre.

My comments:
Until I was introduced to Josephine Cox and this author I did not like historical fiction however these two authors have changed my mind. I've been meaning to get around to this series for a while however sinse the second easby end novel has recently been released and seems to be linked to the same area and as I'm keen to read that saga I felt it best to get to this series given some of the characters may appear in that series such as walter.
I loved all the main characters in this book, Maud, Eleanor, Walter and Camran. This was a lovely easy read and I am looking forward to the other two books in the series. The story was lovely and I liked the fact the romance did not dominate the whole story and we really got to know the characters in the area.
A heart warming book set in Lancashire. Set in 1895. Elinor had been living with her very controlling step father, she had no life of her own. When he dies suddenly Elinor thought she might at last be free, however it is Jason who has inherited the house that had been promised to Elinor. Elinor very quickly realises that she has to escape from Jason; she is helped by her maid and friend, Maude. They escape to a distant cousin of Maude who lives in a village in Lancashire. A pleasant read although somewhat predictable.
Another riveting read by Anna Jacobs as always. I simply love the way the characters are all brought together Maude and Elinor coming under the kind wing of Uncle Walter, also the way the characters from America brought into the story in Lancashire. Now to start the next one it can only get better.
Not my chosen genre, but a book that will hold broad appeal. Whilst it doesn’t set the world on fire, it is a comfortable read. The characters are well drawn and the book flows, with an ending that will not disappoint romantics. A good book for a train journey.
