Foster: Most cops would say flirting immediately after you’ve flashed your badge at a guy is a bad idea. But I can’t resist Craig, the pet resort owner I’ve come to interview. I mean, look at him in his wet jeans and… is that dog hair all over his chest?
I’m dying to ask him out, but first I have to do this favor for my great aunt—okay she bribed me—and go on a blind date with the grandson of her frenemy.
But guess who shows up to rescue me with an outrageous cover story and a rhinestone dog collar?
Craig: My last not-even-a-relationship ended badly. Like, go-to-therapy-for-two-years badly. But I can’t stop thinking about the hot cop who told me to call him if I had any questions. Trust me, there was an innuendo there.
Running into Foster and helping him get out of his blind date reminds me how much I miss going out and having fun. And kissing. Really, the kissing.
I think I’m ready to risk my heart and date again. But is Foster ready for the reputation he gets around the police station after my dog collar stunt? And am I ready to have his PITA grumpy best friend move into my guest room with no end date? And are either of us ready for how fast this relationship is moving?
One thing I know for sure is that neither of us are ready for the guy with a gun in my house.
Heart Me Up is a 62k MM romance filled with meddling friends, hurt/comfort, game nights, an uncomfortable couch, and dog accessories not used for their intended purposes.
Heart Me Up takes place before the events in the rest of the Bent Oak, Texas series and can be read as a standalone.
When Bix Barrow got an idea for her first book, it ended up turning into her second — and thus the first two stories in the Bent Oak, Texas series emerged. An aspiring author for most of her life, it took a foray into the MM romance genre to spark the steamy scenes and blazing banter Bix now weaves into her novels. Accompanying her on her writing exploits are her two dogs and multitude of cats (six at last count). An avid traveler, Bix has started to view her expeditions as interviews for her future home. Born and raised in Texas, she is eager to move somewhere with fewer politicians, hurricanes and flooding.
Heart Me Up is book two in the Bent Oak, Texas series by Bix Barrow. I really enjoyed the first book in this series but I think I loved this one even more. It was so much fun. I laughed out loud more than once. And I couldn’t help but to fall for these two men. And they have not one but two funny meet cutes.
Craig Thomas shares ownership of the Bark & Purr Pet Resort with his best friend, Gregg. After a terrible break up two years prior, Craig has remained single. But when the hot detective walked in to his office, he was instantly smitten.
Foster Walkoviac is a detective with the Bent Oak Police Department. His life is unpredictable with the crazy hours he sometimes has to work. He hasn’t had time for a relationship but as soon as he walks into the office at the Bark & Purr, he knows he wants to see this man again. Unfortunately, his Great Aunt bribes him into a blind date with the grandson of her frenemy. It is a terrible date but guess who comes to the rescue?!
Craig’s quick improvisational idea to get Foster out of his bad date just might back fire on Foster. He gets a reputation at the station for a certain kink which is hilarious. Throw in an unexpected roommate just returned from a long undercover job, and the adventure begins!
Like I said, this was filled with so many smiles. But mostly, I just loved these two together. They came through each challenge with humor and continued to grow closer. I’m getting so attached to all of these characters and now I can’t wait to start the next book, Head Over Feels, which is Malcolm’s story. I can’t wait to get started.
Heart Me Up is the second story in the A Bent Oak, Texas series. It works completely as a standalone although we do get a glimpse of Cole, Jason and Will from Holding On to a Hero. Foster is a cop that needs help with getting out of a blind date. Craig helps him and ohh boy is it funny to read. Craig has been hurt in the past and has PTSD from that. But when he meets Foster, he’s willing to try again. This is one of those stories that will get you right in the feels but more often you’ll spontaneously bark out laughing! Sweet, steamy and seriously funny at times with a touch of tears. Overall, a fantastic read! Well written with pacing that just flows. I literally couldn’t put this one down!
This is the first book that I read by this author and really enjoyed it. Foster is a police officer who went to visit Craig, a pet resort owner, due to a misunderstanding. They met when Craig and his partner is the resort, finished washing a big dog and was full of hair and totally drenched…laughed on that one. They started dating and it was great. There was a bit of a misunderstanding at one point but they got through it. All I can say is loved the collar. Loved it and recommend.
Another lovely story in the Bent Oak, Texas series! This time it's about Craig and Foster, who we met briefly in the first book. In that one, they were already a couple, however. So in this book, we go back in time a bit and get to see how they met and fell in love. It was absolutely wonderful and I'm becoming increasingly attached to this entire cast of characters. There's just something about Bix' writing that is intensely relaxing for me. Low angst, sweet, funny romances with just the right amount of angst & suspense just make my brain very very happy.
This is the second book of the series and even though I didn't read the first one I don't feel like I missed anything. It's got wonderful characters with such a fun storyline, sweet, funny, and steamy read.
This has it all. It’s funny and has lots of steam. There’s also suspense and drama. Plus it’ll pull out your emotions. That ending… so beautiful it brought tears to my eyes.
Note: We first encounter Foster and Craig as secondary characters in Holding On to a Hero, where they are already an establish couple, so timeline wise this book occurs shortly before the first book of the series.
1st person, past tense, dual PoV Foster Walkoviac, detective with the Bent Oak Police Department Craig Thomas, co-owner of Bark & Purr Pet Resort
Audiobook Narration (6h19m) - Declan Winters - 5 stars I'd forgotten how much I enjoy this voice actor. I love that both MCs have their own distinct voice, especially when listening to the non-dialogue passages. It makes it so it's incredibly easy to tell whose PoV we're in. Regardless of whether it's an MC or supporting character he brings each character to life, providing an engaging experience for the listener especially with his lively delivery of dialogue. I so loved this audio that I didn't even mind when my commute to work took extra time due to a snowstorm because it meant I got to listen to more of the story during my drive.
Story - 5 stars I just loved this story from start to finish. I've previously read most of the author's other books, and I don't know how/why it took me so long to get to this one.
Foster and Craig are great characters, caring and kind, they were so easy to root for.
I adored the meet-cute and the chemistry that was evident between these two from the start. I am an absolute sucker for MCs that get embroiled in a little mischief together, so when they run into each other later it feels like fate when Craig saves Foster from a terrible blind date in a very unconventional way. Such a great scene, I chortled with absolute glee! I was just tickled that his actions carried unintended consequences throughout the book making for a great rom com feel.
While Foster and Craig's relationship progressed along a rather rapid timeline, it didn't feel forced or insta-. The reader was there for each turning point, and the many small moments that allow two people to fall in love and I enjoyed every minute of it.
I will say that the author had a tendency to write more of an ensemble-cast-type story rather than focusing solely on the MCs. I enjoy this style of storytelling as I really feel like I get to know the characters and feel they're fully fleshed out and have lives beyond the immediate romance. BUT, it can get overwhelming, trying to keep track of who everyone is and how they relate to one and other, and can impede a reader's enjoyment of the books as standalones since they don't always get all the background and context that occurred earlier in the series.
I've already read Head Over Feels, which is Malcolm (Foster's best friend) and Felix's story and thoroughly enjoyed it, but now I kind of want to revisit it, especially in audio.
I was given a Kobo code and voluntarily wrote an honest review.
This is a really great read! I enjoyed every page. Very well written, held my interest the ENTIRE book, to my delight. Every page counted, and not just rehashing dialog or issues over and over to fill pages.
Foster is a detective in Austin, loves his job. Has a great partner, a tiny but fierce and funny female, who has a a really terrific husband, and they are close with two other detectives outside of work as well as on the job. The whole department is tight and they are incredibly funny. And there are no sacred cows. Nothing is off limits. They, along with Sylvia, a cool elderly neighbor of Foster's, have regular frequent Game Nights that now mostly occur at Foster's house. Because everyone is in love with this funny dream of a cook Silvia, and the guys drool all over themselves to get in on every bite. Them boys...
Craig is co-owner of a Pet Spa with his best friend Greg. They met in college and are besties. Craig hasn't dated in 2 years and is going to weekly psychiatrist appointments, due to trauma a few years ago. Fun guy just stays to himself outside of the Pet Spa. One day Foster needs to speak with the owners (Greg and Craig) informally, to get to the bottom of what someone close to him feels was a cruel joke on an employee. As soon as Foster and Craig meet, sparks. They go their separate ways, reluctantly, but run into each other that same night. And they talk to each other and laugh and it's just so great, but they have to go their separate ways suddenly and then they each think "wow - what just happened today??". This starts a really low angst great story. This author just takes you on such a great journey, romantic and funny and those really good feels, without being sugary sweet and unrealistic. I loved these two guys, and even better was the whole cast of characters and how they related to each other. Highly recommend, 5 big stars.
Foster is a cop. Craig is co-owner of a pet resort. Their paths should never cross, but fate has other plans. When Foster’s older neighbor gets a disturbing card in the mail from Bark and Purr Pet Resort, she asks Foster to confront the business on her behalf. He isn’t on “official” police business, but he agrees to put a scare into the owners to let them know their correspondence wasn’t appreciated. Little does he know, he is about to meet Craig, the cute owner of Bark and Purr, who is wet, shirtless, and covered in dog fur, he isn’t quite sure he wants to play “bad cop” unless it’s the naughty kind of bad.
Craig is definitely taken aback by the hunky cop in his office. He is still suffering the wounds of his last relationship that left him traumatized and shattered. His broken heart is not prepared to take notice of intimidating man who wants to talk to him about a former employee. However, once he explains to Foster the misunderstanding, they each take notice of the other for more than business reasons.
This book by Bix Barrow is just a breath of fresh air. There are such laugh out loud moments, including rescue from a blind date gone bad, some very touching and heart wrenching back stories, and the side characters are all so much fun and add a lot to the story. And just when you think our pet resort owner will be mild mannered, he shows up in the bedroom as very bossy, a little kinky, and a lot HOT!
The relationships between each MC and his friends/co-workers make this such a fun read and they really add to the story. At times there may have been just a bit “too much” going on with ancillary characters and the drama they brought with them, but all in all I would read more from this author. I truly enjoyed the story, the characters, and the town of Bent Oak, Texas. I can’t wait to read more!
Foster is a detective in his home town, he has weekly game nights with his friends and fellow coworkers, he is watching his best friend's cat... But he's still lonely, he's missing something.
When Foster meets Craig he finally finds what he was missing, what was missing from his life was Craig. He just didn't know it.
I adored these two characters, Craig was sweet and smart and has had a rough coupe of years, Foster's head strong, loyal and caring. He helps out his neighbor and he agrees to blind date his great aunt sets him up with. On said blind date he needs rescuing from that date, who rescues him you may ask? Craig, that's who! That moment I could not stop laughing and smiling at my phone, it was so funny and amusing! The author was very creative and clever coming up with that and then writing it so well.
This book was really well written with terrific characters and very detailed backgrounds for each character. I loved Mariposa, I want a Maine coon cat so to read about one made me smile. I really enjoyed how even the side characters played such a big part in the overall storyline, they all contributed to adding more dimension and humor into the story. The only reason I'm giving this a 4 star is because I wish we got to see more of Foster doing his job, we got to see Craig doing his job but we didn't get much of Foster doing his. That's pretty minor considering the story was really good.
I definitely recommend this story and can I just say, I loved the ending of this book!
*I received an early copy of this book and this is my honest review.*
Author needs to learn that a romance novel should focus mainly on the main characters getting to know each other which helps readers buy in on a budding romantic relationship between the two.
What readers get in this book is a whole lot of page time of Craig interacting with his friend and colleagues at work and learning unnecessary tidbits about these people that truly don't move the plot a long. Same thing was done with Foster. The reader learns how he is a great friend and cop but we only get stingy moments of awkwardness with Craig to stretch our imagination into believing there is SOME romantic vibes between them.
The first sexy time seemed more like a luckwarm hook-up that tried real hard to be hot and meaningful.
Heck, I felt there was more chemistry between Craig and Malcolm, the FBI bestie of Foster than between two MCs. 😳
In the end, I came to the conclusion that this will be an author I pass on for now and maybe give a second chance later on to see if there is any improvements in the romance department.
This is the first story I’ve read by this author. I am surprised how much I enjoyed it Foster is a cop who is involved with family and friends and relationships not so much. When one of his neighbors asks him to check out employment issues at Bark and Purr Pet Resort he finds more than expected. He finds himself dealing with one of the owners Craig. There is instant attraction between these two that takes some doing to get them together. They have friends and family pushing them together yet both are somewhat introverted and its by fate they end up meeting again. There are quite a few secondary issues to this story. There is heat between the main characters. There are tense moments and laughable moments. This story held my interest all the way through. The characters are likable. The secondary characters, I’d like some of their stories. I plan on reading more by this author.
This is the 2nd book in the Bent Oak, Texas series. I have not read the first one (Holding on to a Hero) and I was able to fully enjoy this book, no confusion or missing information. However, I'm definitely going to be reading the first one because I loved this one so much. Foster and Craig meet under unusual circumstances, the first and the 2nd time. And the sparks fly at each meeting. They were super cute and steamy hot together. No angst between the MCs but it it have all the feels....sweet tender and humorous moments with some suspense sprinkled in when a shady character begins to cause trouble. I was hooked from beginning to end, loving every moment, not knowing if I'll be cracking up or my heart would be aching or full of joy for them or on tenterhooks. And now I really need Greg's story, but meanwhile I'll enjoy the first book until it comes out
Let's just say a blind date rescue involving an innocent collar; that's what starts a humorous and fun connection between cop Foster and kennel owner Craig. Emotions are aplenty, not just erotic, but with grief over loss of a loved one, and some stumbling on Foster's part, a great example of hoof-in-mouth disease. There are great secondary characters present: Foster's cop partner Amy, fellow cops Carlos and Artie, and Craig's dearest friend and co-resort pet owner Greg. All of the mentioned characters add their own touch of hilarity and in-defense standing up for their co- workers. Craig's "ex" is even given a saving grace ending but only after Greg serves up a magnificent 3-step payback. The epilog lent a heart touching ending that will have to bring tears to any reader's eyes. I received this book as an ARC reviewer, and I'm voluntarily leaving my honest opinion.
Foster is a police officer who wants to find his forever man. Craig co owns a resort with his best friend who is relearning how to trust another man.
When both meet, it is attraction at first sight.
When a blind date goes terribly, Craig jumps in to help Foster out by using the best and most hilarious excuse ever… you’ll need to read to find out!!
Both characters are perfectly suited for each other and I absolutely loved the side characters of both best friends!
I especially love the growing friendship between Craig and Malcolm - I really hope he gets a book! Their bond is amazing and oh-so-funny. Definitely laugh-out-loud material.
Perfect story for a perfect couple.
Tropes; ~ found family ~ friendship ~ fast paced
TW’s; ~ past death of a pet (not too much detail but does cause trauma to one MC)
Bix Barrow has written a great story filled with laughter, love, and steam. Foster and Craig meet while Foster is doing a favor for his neighbor. Right from the beginning they like one another. The trauma Craig went through was truly heartbreaking and it was wonderful that Foster was so understanding. This story has a very cute first date!! Craig's dirty mouth was so 🔥🥵🔥 and I'm totally here for it. I love that Craig and Malcolm, a friend of Foster's, become best friends, the banter between them is so funny. Book ends with a sweet satisfying HEA.
"I could buy a pre-cut vegetable tray with the best of them." 😆
"Craig: Remember that time when I saved your life? "Malcolm: I don’t remember it being quite so one-sided, leash-boy." 😂
I am leaving my honest review for a complimentary copy of this book via the author.
I loved Craig and Foster’s funny and heart warming love story. The meet cute - wet and covered in dog hair while meeting a hot cop asking questions - was perfectly adorkable and swoony. As was the resulting smirks and giggles. This is one of those books that I smiled almost the entire time I was reading it. The story included witty dialogue, three dimensional characters who grow, and an engaging storyline. Foster is a detective in Bent Oak, Texas. Craig is the owner of a pet daycare and boarding business. The story included sweet moments, steamy scenes, chuckles, supportive friends, messy families, painful pasts, light danger, and heart squeezing love and it will give you all the feels - laughing, crying, swooning, cringing, teeth gritting, and cheering. I will definitely be reading more in this series.
Heart Me Up is the second in the Bent Oak, Texas Novel and it was a delight to read. This can be read a s a standalone but you don't want to miss out on the first! Having read and loved the first book I was eager for Foster and Craig's story. Meeting under unusual circumstances has these two fighting the sparks they each feel. Soon enough they can't resist each other. I love the humor and care they share. Seeing Craig be his true, daring self after a past trauma is wonderful. Foster is the perfect match for him. Add in a touch of mystery and I couldn't stop turning the pages. I loved seeing these guys get their well deserved HEA! I can't wait for more in this series.
Heart Me Up is the second book in the A Bent Oak, Texas series but can easily be read as standalone.
This book is laugh out loud funny, touching and sweet but doesn't neglect my need for a steamy scene or two! The characters are fun and the banter is excellent! I love the side characters, particularly Foster's partner on the force and the rest of his crew! Well paced and well developed, this is one of those stories where you root for the characters to get their HEA because they both deserve it!
I enjoyed seeing Craig and Foster come together and rescue one another in so many different ways. The friendship group was awesome, and there was a great array of characters, most good, some seriously flawed but trying, some grumpy. ;)
Craig’s mental health progression through the novel was wonderful to witness. I liked all the humour in the relationship along with the sweet moments and the heat. Although Craig and Foster haven’t known one another long, it felt like they were building the relationship the right way (with a few hiccoughs along the way).
I do love spending time in Bent Oak. This is the second book in the series. We met both Craig and Foster in the first book and this is their story. Craig is such a sweetie, but, it turns out with a really potty mouth, which was hysterical. Foster is the put upon Police Detective who can't get enough of him, although he does put his foot in it from time to time. They have great chemistry together and some seriously steamy scenes. The world of Bent Oak is growing with more characters added and an engaging plot line.
I loved this story! Craig, the owner of a pet resort, has no interest in dating after a bad breakup. But when Detective Foster shows up at his business to investigate a misunderstanding, sparks fly. Once the issue is cleared up, Foster wants to see Craig again except there’s one problem, his aunt set him up on a blind date. Craig and Foster make a deal that if the date turns out to be a disaster, Craig will help Foster escape. And the way Craig pulls it off is hysterical!
I listened to the audiobook narrated by Declan Winters, and he truly brought the characters to life.
Bix Barrow is one of my new favorite authors. This is book two in A Bent Oak, Texas Novel series of books. This book centers around characters introduced in book one and at the end there is a cameo of the main characters from book one. It is a great series with wonderful characters, found family, it definitely is heart warming and worth reading. I already have the next book pre-ordered and can't wait to read it.
I absolutely loved Foster and Craig’s story. Craig has a fun loving side that hasn’t seen the light of day ever since a traumatic event a couple of years before, but there is just something about Foster that brings it out of him again. Watching these two interact was so much fun as Virgin slowly came out of his shell. I am gonna have to go read the rest of this series now. I have read the first one but I need Malcom’s story now!
Same issues as the previous book, only not as saturated. More typos and little grammar whiffs, though. And some continuity stuff, but not until the very end.
I actually liked this one better. The relationship had more focus, and I really liked how much of it was on page. I get why book one wasn’t the same, but I can’t help that this one had that little bit of extra love that went a long way.
4/5. I love this world even if the delivery is messy. That’s saying a lot.
Foster and Craig seem like an unlikely pair but their love story is filled with humor, steam and a twist at the end which made the story layered and very enjoyable. Foster's fellow cops where a hoot and I hope that there will be more stories for some of them. The final scene made me cry but it was a touching addition to this story and was a fantastic wrap up to this sweet romance.
The humor in this book is wonderful. There are serious parts, but the author definitely brings a playful spin to this relationship. This was my first book by this author, and I actually went back and read Holding On To A Hero, which introduces Jason, Will, and Cole. I am looking forward to another book in this series for sure.
Foster and Craig meet due to a weird situation but quickly had another chance to meet. I think their interaction with the collar was so hilarious and love how it continued to affect the story. They both wanted another person in their life but gained so much more with their relationship and their friends.
This was a great and fun read that held me captive from the first page to the last. Foster and Craig were great together and all the interesting secondary characters added a lot to the story. It was sweet, fun, emotional at times and steamy. Highly recommended.
