When small-town college instructor Candace Cooper discovers bloody, bare footprints in the snow while running in a state park deep in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, it brings back the horrific nightmare of her past. Detective Aiden Farrell is determined to redeem himself in his new position in Colorado, even if that means ignoring his growing feelings for the beautiful professor he meets during an investigation. His fear that the footprints she saw are connected to a recent spate of missing teens intensifies when Candace is assaulted on campus. Aiden and Candace join forces, but as they start unraveling the truth, they get closer to each other—and to a killer who'll stop at nothing to achieve his nefarious goal. Caught between duty and love, Aiden fights in a race against time to save the woman he loves.
Award-winning author, C.B. Clark has written nine romantic suspense novels published by The Wild Rose Press. C.B. has always loved reading, especially romances, but it wasn’t until she lost her voice for a year that she considered writing her own romantic suspense stories. She grew up in Canada’s Northwest Territories and Yukon. Graduating with a degree in Anthropology and Archaeology, she has worked as an archaeologist and an educator. She enjoys hiking, canoeing, and snowshoeing with her husband and dog near her home in the wilderness of central British Columbia.
Thanks NetGalley and Wild Rose Press, Inc. for the opportunity to read this book! Dr. Candace Cooper goes running at Creighton Springs State Park. She comes across bloody footprints and a man with a gun. She escapes but the police don’t do much of anything. 3 months later along comes Detective Aiden Farell to investigate the incident. Multiple women with dark hair and blue eyes are going missing. This was a great read and very entertaining. It had romance and mystery. Can’t wait to read more by this author!
Romantic suspense at its best! Talk about pacing! Author C.B. Clark has everything timed to perfection – a breath of romance here, a scare there, and an omnipresent terror that grips the reader right along with the characters.
The characters – swoon! Candace Cooper Ph.D. and Detective Aiden Farrell both suffer from traumatic events from their pasts and struggle with survivor’s guilt. United by a cause as well as a police case, linked in suffering, they understand each other and find solace in their mutual empathy. As the situation escalates – there’s almost constant action -- they also find love. Candace and Aiden’s relationship develops throughout the story. Their romance is tender and exquisitely sensitive. It’s beautiful.
Terror, action, romance – what a balancing act and this author nails it! I could hardly put the book down. I would give six stars if I could. Hats off, C.B. Clark!
After college professor Candace Cooper finds bloody footprints in the snowy forest, she sees a mysterious bearded man with a rifle in his hands. She runs off and calls for help, but the police don’t believe her story. Years earlier, Candace’s sister, Charlene, was kidnapped and tortured along with four other teenagers, but Charlene was the only girl who wasn’t rescued. Ever since then, Candace has made it her mission to harass and beg the cops to keep looking for her sister even though the case is now long cold. Detective Aiden Farrel is new to town and assigned a missing person’s case. He’s desperate to redeem himself after a scandal the year prior, so he pours himself into his work. He believes Candace’s story to the chagrin of his blustery partner and works with her in trying to find a missing teenager. As they search for clues, disturbing evidence comes to light. Candace is at risk, but he’s determined not to fail again. What a great story! Both Candace and Aiden have their own fair share of guilt, especially Candace, and they bond over their pain. After everything she’s been through, she has a right to be scared, but she hasn’t let her fear stop her from living her life. Her bravery is admirable. I’ve always liked Ms. Clark’s writing. Her romantic suspense stories are clean (no sex) and lean more on the suspense angle than the romance, which I find refreshing since I usually only read romance. For anyone wanting a nail-biter of a story with three-dimensional characters, check out Forging Forgiveness. 5 Stars
Such a suspenseful thriller romance! I was excited to read another book by C.B. Clark, and Forging Forgiveness didn’t disappoint. The excitement started on the first page and continued to escalate. The story was so suspenseful, I couldn’t stop reading. (At one point I even flipped the pages to the end to see if the protagonists made it through the action alive). Both Candace Cooper and Detective Aiden Farrell have pasts with heavy burdens. Candace tries to deal with her fears, but the town police department hasn’t cooperated since she’s hounded them daily for years after her sister was abducted in Candace's childhood bedroom when they were teenagers. Aiden botched his last case by losing his heart and overlooking clues. Although he has feelings for Candace, he won’t risk his career—or will he? Despite their internal struggles in search of some kind of absolution for their past, Candace and Aiden are well suited for each other and give each other the compassion they seek. Clark packs a lot of action into Forging Forgiveness. I liked the plot, pacing, relatable characters, and natural-flowing dialogue. Clark has a flair with writing such beautiful descriptions it’s hard not to fall in love with every story she writes. I was given an ARC for a fair and honest review. Well done, C.B. Clark!
A powerful tale that shows the horrors of the past may just be able to reach you in the present if you are not careful. A haunted heroine faced with trying to come to grips with personal horror faces another terrible situation. Candace is not the most capable or self-reliant woman but her vulnerabilities make her more approachable to readers.
The author creates the scenes in such a detailed fashion that there is almost a sense of ambiance that comes over the reader. The dual POV gives increased suspense to the scenes. The suspense is high octane and almost sears the fingers of the reader.
A romantic suspense that is heavy on suspense. The fact that a relationship can develop and go forward in the midst of this very real horror is remarkable. Fans of romantic suspense will love this book. Fans who love edge-of-their-seat suspense will love this book.
Disclaimer: I received a copy from the author in the hopes I'd review it. My thoughts are my own.
Forging Forgiveness: WOW! Fantastic writing with lots of suspense, surprises, twists, and turns. Great characters that you never knew would happen. Great dialog for all the characters. Charlene was a strong character throughout the story and she like that there was another Detective that picked up the cast and would not let it drop until he solved it but it was hard to do that when it had been several months since Charlene had seen the evidence. She would know what she saw because of the field that she teaches. When Candace described everything to Detective Breacher, he treated her like she was crazy. Detective Ferrell listen to everything that Candace said to him and he believed her and the evidence started popping up for other cases Detective Ferrell was figuring out that it was a possible serial killer but Detective Breacher was not believing it because he was stuck on Aiden having the hots for the doctor. It was a great story and I enjoyed it.
While out running in a state park in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, Candace Cooper discovers bloody footprints that could've only been made by bare feet. It was a great setup for the story. Candace is driven to find out who those prints belong to and takes the information to the local police department. The PD frustrates her by not taking seriously what she reported. However, as a recent number of missing teens intensifies, law enforcement can no longer ignore that something nefarious is going on and they tie in what Candace shared. Enter Detective Aiden Farrell. From the moment he comes on scene, the dynamics of this story really take off. Without giving too much away, I'll just say there's a lot of emotion, surprises, twists, threats, danger, strong feelings between Candace and Aiden, and so much more in this well-written thriller/romantic suspense.
Candace Cooper finds a bloody foot print in the snow on her run through a remote part of a park. Because she has been hounding the local police force for many years about the disappearance/kidnapping of her older sister, the police are not quite making it a priority to look into. Skip forward a bit and Detective Aiden Farrell, recently dismissed from his Seatle position, and needing to redeem himself of past mistakes, follows up with Candace in the disappearance of recent teen. Then Candace gets assaulted and things start to get more complicated. The mystery/clue part of the story is good, and I don’t mind romance, but this was maybe a bit more romance than I would expect of a Mystery/Thriller.
Our Review: With complex and intricate plotting, author Clark takes the reader on a wild ride through the glorious Colorado Rockies. While the suspense and mystery is clearly evident, this is also a story of redemption and forgiveness of self. As well, the plight of the families and loved ones of the ‘missing’ is always there, raising our awareness of the many forms of evil in this world.
On a scale of 1-5, Forging Forgiveness deserves a 5.
Forging Forgiveness is a thrilling mystery, complete with a hot detective and plenty of suspense. What’s not to love? From a kidnapping 22 years before, to a new rash of unsolved disappearances, we are introduced to the sister of one of the earlier victims. As she struggles to live in a world that doesn’t seem to care about her sister any longer, she doesn’t realize she has become a target. Sure to keep you on the edge of your seat as the tension rises and sparks fly.
Thoroughly enjoyed this story to the point of reading it in one sitting. Candace and Aiden are engaging characters who draw on your emotions as you watch them struggle through various trials and tribulations just hoping that they will make it out the otherside together and victorious.
A college professor with a tragic background meets a detective who is still smarting from recent indiscretions. Sounds like the makings a conflicted story with many possibilities. Add murder and love to the mix, and you’ve got a great romantic suspense. Ms. Clark delivers. Enjoy the read!
I would have read this in one sitting if time allowed. The suspense and mystery had me on the edge of my seat and the love story had me rooting for the characters. Great story and great twists.
