A brand new Spec Ops ship with a brand new crew. Same old enemy-- biomechanical insects that make spare parts out of everything they come across. Where did they come from? Renaud doesn't know, doesn't care. He's got a job to do and a raw but talented crew to help him do it. This crew rotation Renaud is getting way more than he bargained for. His personal motto of "don't get attached"? Right. Turns out he'll have to care about a lot of people and things, or no one's going to survive.
Devin wants to save the galaxy-- and escape an arranged marriage. Veris wants to use her piloting skills to earn money for school. Kerai just needed a new job, and one where she gets to shoot things for a living is perfect. Jareth wants to keep his bro Devin out of trouble while getting into plenty of his own. Renaud? Another day, another battle and as always, secrets to keep.
Join the crew of the Destrier as they try to save the universe, one suicide mission at a time.
Novaflight is a difficult book to label. There is romance. There is more than a touch of horror. There is definitely adventure, some of which has a military slant. There is humor; the twins are fun, and Veris's emotional support harp is hilarious. A lot of really bad stuff happens, some of which crosses the line into horror. None of Renaud's crew die, but there is definitely a body count. There is graphic violence. Some characters have surprising secrets. I laughed a lot. And I bought the book as soon as I finished reading it in KU so that I could reread it multiple times.
After reading Ran Shaipur by the same author last year, it was great to revisit the D'Abraxan culture. Novaflight brings what all spaceopera fans love: An interesting crew of characters, space battles with alien foes, and let's not forget romance. Through fast-paced action, multiple POV's, and fun dialogue we get to love this diverse cast of characters who need to learn to trust each other if they are to survive the challenges the author has set up for them. This was an entertaining read that I can easily recommend to fans of light sci-fi and spaceopera.
Although this is the best of the Ran Shaipur books so far, like the other two it lacks development. Where is the story of Ran Shaipur? Every book alludes to him and in one we actually meet him but you never find out what was so great about what he did. When writing a book with a made up world and made up words, it also helps to introduce the reader to what is being discussed and that does not happen either.
It was still a good read but what you would expect from a novice writer
This was an interesting read. Hints at history that is intriguing. But I feel the slightly different teenager characters as a Super Team from a planet of super extraordinary inhabitants is not believable even for a science fiction story. I do like the characters but they seem just a bit too naive for such missions. And I believe the marriage would have received more push back. I received an ARC ebook.
Battles and politics in a space hopping science fiction fiction novel. Well written and character driven story from multiple POVs. It is not the hard hard science of propulsion systems at weaponry. There is the personal interaction and motivations of the characters
T. L. Ryder uses the scifi elements perfectly with what I was hoping for, it uses the world and characters in a way that I was hoping from the description. I was engaged with what was going on and glad it was so well written. I can't wait to read more from T. L. Ryder.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I emnjoyed this space opera by this new author. There are several story lines intertwined. It is worth digging in and taking the ride. I look forward to the next book in the series.
While the premise looked intriguing, I could not get on board with the main characters, who seemed like entitled rich kids in attitude and actions. I quickly stopped caring.
