Heartbreaker: Heartmaker Trilogy Book 2

Rate this book
After finding out she is the Bellata--the prophesized warrior meant to save Decim--Addie, along with James, returns to Barracks to unite the Twelve Magisters. But as she discovers her old home in ruin, Addie stumbles upon Silas and Nana, the only people left in Barracks.

As Silas explains what happened, Addie remembers the special gift Eman entrusted to her. She gives the gift to Silas, only to learn that he's the young blacksmith who fought through the Seven Choices, making Addie unsure of how to react to her old friend.

Dodging an attack from Schism, and another deadly ally to Ophidian, the group finally makes their way to Ramni, where a familiar face joins them--one Addie never wanted to see again.

If Addie can't learn to balance her new power, successfully unite the Twelve Magisters, and figure out what's going on with a new voice in her head, Ophidian will destroy all the twelve lands ...

And she'll never know who is capable of betrayal amongst her friends.

First Thoughts: Well, I'm glad the author didn't break my heart TOO bad… *nervous laughter* *sobs*

Seriously though, that was quite the heartbreaker! Though I am DEEPLY thankful that despite everything, this story ended on a hopeful note. I don't know what I would have done if it hadn't because there are some serious things that go down and it was SO hard seeing/reading it. But that underlying thread of hope never vanished and so so so relieved!

But yes, Heartbreaker WAS a hard read. While Addie was a conqueror at the end of Heartmender against all her foes, sometimes being back "in the real world" is harder than one expects. The battle isn't over, and throw in seeds of doubts about oneself and others, and it gets even harder.

Because of this, I struggled at times with Addie's internal dialogue because she didn't feel the same to me. Where is that strong woman who faced her fears and moved forward? Definitely not saying she didn't in Heartbreaker! She did/was, but it was just different and I wasn’t always fond of the different. However, there was an extreme turning point for her and everything just "clicked" in my mind. Suddenly I understood her behaviors and her actions and, in all honesty, this book (like Heartmender) was very timely. Sometimes we DO get so focused on the I, I, I that we don't FULLY see our loved ones around us and their words of warning or their words of love. It was eye-opening and convicting because I feel like Addie is once again, a very relatable character.

The world-building was amazing! I deeply enjoyed seeing more of this fleshed out world, even if it made me sad to see the effects of darkness and how far its reach has extended.

This is a strong sequel to Heartmender and will once again shatter your heart, but also hold it together with hope because evil will not "win" forever. I look forward to the next book, though please author, be kind to these precious characters! *sobs and grabs a box of tissues*

*I received an ARC from the publisher. All thoughts expressed are my own.*

The Plot/Story: this second novel sees Addie and company out on a quest to unite the Magisters of Decim, gain their allegiance in the fight against Ophidian.  The plot is once again fast moving, with obstacles being overcome fairly quickly in order to advance the storyline.  Now that Addie has newfound confidence, responsibility, and a crew of friends & family to fight alongside her, what will happen? There is plenty of action, lessons learned, good along with the bad, but man – this one ends on a cliffhanger!

Themes: While Heartmender was about choices and the seven sins, Heartbreaker is about sacrifice and trusting in Eman’s plan.  He isn’t with Addie but his voice is still heard, his plan is known, and there is a super cool magical book that I am pretty sure is an allegory for biblical guidance, although I am not positive.  Other wholesome themes include friendship, trust, finding family, self worth, and trusting that one is never alone.

Continuing worldbuilding: One of my favorite parts was learning the back story of the antagonist, and how all of this evil came to be! A lot of questions from book one were answered in this, including questions about Addie’s family.  The author did a great job expanding on the world of Decim to include the other realms, inhabitants, issues, and even geography to make the world richer.

The Characters: Addie has some serious “coming of age” challenges to overcome.  She is the Bellata, so she should be independent, in charge, and unruffleable – right?  It was nice watching her learn to work with a team, test out her feelings for Silas, and start to come into her responsibility.  She also drove me nuts sometimes jumping to conclusions and blaming others, but it’s part of learning to socialize

Silas is a good character in this one too but I can’t really say why.  He is a great protector to Addie and tests the group.  James and Nana and Claire, also Damien … It is a good group.

I think the reason I scored this one a little lower is because of how easily the answers to the puzzles come to Addie.  She races through the first few magisters and while it works to further the allegories and storyline, I think I would have liked her to be tripped up a little more.  The book makes up for that at the end though, how in the world are they ever going to get out of that situation??

At heart this is a complex story and I think it would make a great buddy read for readers of any age.  That targeted 13-18 range is totally 100% appropriate too.  In the coming weeks I will be posting about book 3 so stay tuned for that!!

I love the spiritual allegory that is woven into these stories. After all she went through in the first book, Addie is still learning and growing in her journey, sometimes struggling with very relatable questions and battles. A great follow-up to Heartmender!

Heartbreaker! Did not break my heart, except maybe with that cliffhanger ending!

description

The story begins exactly where Heartmender left off so if you haven't read Heartmender, go do that now. I'll wait.

Ok now for those who have read Heartmender. We get more Silas and Addie moments!

description

But! Of course our young lovers must go through trials because what good book doesn't have trials.

description

So for those who are still reading and haven't read Heartmender, you should, because Heartmender is all about our young heroine, Addie, growing as a person and facing trials of the inner self.
Heartbreaker is Addie facing trials of the world. At first I was a little concerned because there was a repeat of the doors and it felt like it was following the same format as Heartmender just in Decim instead of in Ophidian's Realm.
I should have known better though, V. Romas Burton is a fantastic author and the story grew past the doors and moved into its own plot.
So since the second one is Addie facing the trials of the world, we get to read more about Decim. I loved the world building and the unique problems created for each area Addie visited.
Heartbreaker is so good. Let me break it down for you.

What I loved:
The world building.
The struggles Addie faces.
The relationships especially Addie and Silas
The journey

What I didn't like:
The repetitiveness at the beginning of her journey.
the ending! How could you leave us on such a cliffhanger! I need more of Decim and more of Addie and Silas and I can't say any more because of spoilers. AHH!

To me Heartmender and Heartbreaker are great allegories of growth in life. We must go through personal growth and strength in order to truly cause good growth in our communities and the world around us. V. Romas Burton captures this beautifully with the reminder that there is only One we can truly rely on for that growth and its not ourself.
Her depiction of that One's sacrifice brought tears to my eyes.

Anyways, if you can't tell. I loved this book and I 10/10 recommend it.

An emotional sequel to Heartmender! This book tortured me in more ways than one. Addie drove me crazy throughout it. Constantly tempted by an inner voice, she is very arrogant compared to the woman who endured the trials of the previous book. I also didn't like the message of "you're more powerful than you realize" because even though it is true, I felt like it fed Addie's ego. My heart went out to Silas, whose possessive jealousy was so unlike the unemotional, dependable Silas. Addie noticed it too, and it causes tensions between them. And even though we got a whole book with Silas in it, I still feel like we don't know the whole story of Addie and Silas. At this point, you may be wondering why I gave it five stars, if it tortured me so much?
That's exactly why.
If I didn't care about the characters, if I wasn't invested in the story, then I wouldn't have been so angry. The fact that the author made me feel so much is a testament to her ability. Furthermore, the ending resolved a lot of my frustration with Addie. I can't wait until the sequel is out because there is so much I want to see with Silas and Addie.

Addie has overcome the battle for ownership of her heart and returned to Barracks. At first triumphant in her victory, she soon discovers that having a heart brings its own set of burdens and pains. As she learns to live with her heart, Addie must also work to unite the Twelve Magisters of Decium before Ophidian can overcome the realm, plunging it into eternal darkness. Victory will not be easy, and it could come at a terrible cost. The only way Addie will win is if she can survive the heartbreak.

I received an ARC of this book for review, and I was not disappointed. The action begins on page one and carries full-tilt through every chapter, taking readers from one conflict to another without sacrificing character development. There’s even a budding relationship for readers who enjoy a romance thread in their fantasy. If you enjoyed Heartmender, you don’t want to miss this book.

This was a great second installment in this fantasy allegory trilogy. It took us on a Lord of the Rings type quest and was filled with good versus evil, friends, family, victories, failures, and struggle. It was an extremely well woven adventure that kept having more and more twists and turns while continuing to weave in the Seven Choices from book 1. Some things could be predicted but the way there were implemented gutted me. I can’t wait to finish this series. The romance is just kisses, intimacy level 1.5.

Content: there are some violent scenes

Ok, now the serious review stuff:
🗡🦋Book review: ❤️ 🗡
-
🗡Story: Ok, you do gotta push yourself a little more to get through the book, it’s a little slower and a bit more complex, but trust me it’s worth it, it triples the action and excitement. I actually think I liked this even more then the first one.
-
🦋Characters: There was a lot of character development for addie in the first book, but in this book we get a lot more for the other characters too. Especially Silas, Claire, and James. Claire is still my favorite character- don’t be stupid!

❤️Writing: Like I already said, V Roma’s Burton has such a beautiful gift. Every word in her books are meaningful and beautiful. Again, it may have even been better then the first.

This book is a fantastic sequel to the authors earlier book. The rapid pace keeps the story moving and the depth of symbolism continues to be impressive, as with the first book. The story flows simply, but has depth in subtle elements and how the story is weaved. I really enjoyed both books and I think you will too.

Heartbreaker by V. Romas Burton

Oh. Boy. This book is so aptly named. I still am slightly in shock at the ending. (And kinda sorta very upset 😭).

We pick up right where we left off in Heartmender. Addie is returning home to bring the Magisters together to fight Ophidian’s army and defeat the evil that is seeping into Decim.

The character growth in this book floored me. V captured the human tendency for pride and anger to cloud our perception of others so perfectly.

Silas is still my favorite character. I can’t say too much or risk spoilers, but I’m so peeved with Silas but I also find him so sweet and caring and URG I LOVE SILAS SO MUCH!

I’m trying to be patient for book two, but September seems like a long way off.

Five stars out of five!

From the series that brought us through a young woman’s triumph over the seven deadly sins comes another vibrant and hopeful adventure story from V. Romas Burton. A beam of light in a dark year filled with uncertainties, Heartbreaker doesn’t shy away from trouble, but meets it head-on.

Readers will recall the end of Heartmender giving us new knowledge about Addie’s destiny that she never could have dreamed. Heartbreaker picks up the story with a team of characters, including our favorite spunky, feisty Claire, supporting our heroine as she embarks on the next leg of her journey.

The pace picks up as the pages turn, maturing into a high-stakes story with twists and turns and a growing sense of inevitability as an impending storm brews on the horizon. After the first half of the book, which harkens back to the “level-up” format of Heartmender, readers can expect to be swept up by a swift rising action and utterly gripped by the climax, which leaves us thirsting for the third book. Some authors leave the reader with too much of a cliffhanger at the end of the book, but not so here. Readers can rest assured that Burton wraps up with a satisfying conclusion, one that leaves us dying to know more, but with enough closure to wait for the series’ (hopefully) triumphant end.

As much as V. Romas Burton excels with plot, fans of Heartmender know well that it’s also the series’ themes that make it successful. Through a mix of action, conflict, dialogue, internal struggle, and humor, Burton once again weaves a narrative that navigates complicated questions of personal and corporate spiritual struggle and discipline. In a subtle and gentle way, symbolically or as played out through the characters’ interactions, Burton teaches on questions that every young Christian woman can benefit from wrestling with. The savvy reader will pick up on lessons about the role of the Bible in the life of a Christian, embracing our gifts without stepping on others or envying their talents, and following God’s clear call on our lives, despite when it’s hard.

Even with such gentle, humble spiritual teaching woven in, Heartbreaker would not be effective without the final piece of Burton’s powerful trifecta: taking the reader on the emotional roller coaster of Addie’s emotions. From initial romantic attraction, to controlled emotion, anger, and ultimately, heartbreak (it is in the title, after all), Addie feels it all, and the reader experiences it right alongside her.

Some of Burton’s other strengths shine in this installment of the series. New characters are introduced with precision, revealing just enough about them to make the reader eager to learn more. Pre-battle scenes unfold with the same power as if we were watching them on the big screen. One can almost hear music as the buildup happens, and the reader’s veins seem to pulse with anticipation before the action begins. Several scenes swell with the kind of hopeful heroism we’ve come to expect from an Avengers movie. In fact, the Heartmender series as a whole would be so finely suited to an on-screen rendition that I wouldn’t be surprised if it were picked up for one in the next couple of years.

Heartbreaker perfectly sets up an expectant, epic third book to resolve the series’ conflict. The plot is ripe for battle, the characters have grown and matured, and the reader is ready for a final, “let’s settle this once and for all” kind of showdown.

As a whole, Heartbreaker makes for a perfect autumn read. Fans of V. Romas Burton should prepare to break out their cups of tea, light their Heartbreaker scented candles, and curl up for a satisfying adventure read.

Heartbreaker is book two in the Heartmender trilogy. The story follows Addie, the prophesied Bellata, as she seeks to find and claim the allegiance of the twelve Magisters of Decim in order to defeat Ophidian. She is accompanied by an enjoyable assortment of characters: the wise and experienced James, the sweet yet conflicted Silas, the sassy healer Claire, and Damien, a handsome lord whose motivations are uncertain. Their quest is made more difficult by the dark creatures that track them, along with a mysterious woman who throws lightning.

Characters: 4
I like all the characters, especially Romen! (Mysterious, clever, and cheeky--hoping for more of him in book three!) Sometimes it felt that Addie had forgotten what she learned in the last book, but there were some great moments of character realization. I loved Silas and Addie's relationship in book one, so their conflict in this book, while understandable, isn't fun to read about. Claire was my favorite in book one. I was sad we didn't get as much focus on her (or James) in this book. Damien was definitely a good addition to the cast, although I didn't believe the attraction that Addie sometimes had to him.

Plot: 4
The concept of the plot is pretty basic--find the Magisters and convince them to swear to Addie's cause--but it was executed well and there were several plot twists and subplots that played out in interesting ways. I particularly liked 1) how Addie struggled with the jealous voice in her head, 2) Damien's uncertain motivations, and 3) the added tension and frustration of knowing there were several important secrets that weren't being shared. While book one felt more focused on character and character development, this book seemed to focus more on the plot (there weren't as drastic character arcs), which isn't my favorite, but that's just preference.

Pacing: 3
The initial promise for this book is that Addie would be questing for the twelve Magisters, but they don't set off on this quest until the book is 1/3 through. While the things that happen first are necessary and interesting, it felt like too much build-up before the story actually started. Similarly, I expected the quest to be in some way completed by the end of the book, but it wasn't. And while the ending makes sense in the flow of the story, it leaves the reader hanging. I think this is often a problem for book two of a trilogy. A cliffhanger is fine, but there should also be a sense of closure for some subplot(s), and I didn't feel that. Thus, while I felt that the whole book was able to keep a fast, action-packed pace, it didn't give me a sense of build and climax, just constant conflict.

World: 5
The world of Decim is beautiful and obviously very well thought out. Each new place that we visit is described vividly and has its own unique characteristics and appeal. It's the kind of world that you can tell the author planned out thoroughly and probably knows lots of details about that aren't even mentioned in the books. It has profound depth.

I would rate this a solid 4 stars, except for a not infrequent use of unusual/strange word choices that sometimes brought me out of the story. Thus, I'm giving it 3.5 stars, rounded up to 4 stars.

4.5/5 stars (rounded up to 5 stars!)

I received a free copy of this book, and I am voluntarily leaving a review.

Well, the title of this book is accurate. Nice of V. Romas Burton to warn me!

Potential spoilers for book 1 ahead!

Addie has learned she is the warrior prophesized to save the realms, and now she must unite the Magisters to save the realms. Accompanied by James, she returns home to Barracks and is shocked by what she finds. Barracks is in shambles and has been abandoned by everyone except Nana and Silas. After a battle against the siti, Addie and the others head back to Ramni before continuing on their journey. Surprises, betrayals, battles, and more await the characters as Ophidian gets closer and closer to destroying Decim for good.

Wow, this book was crazy! I had a hard time putting it down! The story moves quickly, and the book is action-packed from beginning to end! There were a lot of dark moments, more than I expected, in this book. However, the theme of hope is prevalent throughout, as well as the reminder that Addie isn't alone.

I really enjoyed getting to see more of Decim in this book! The world-building is great! I was also really intrigued by the side characters throughout the book.

Addie and the others travelling with her go through a lot on their journey, but their interactions were some of my favorite moments in this book! I'm also glad we got to see more of Silas in this book as I love his relationship with Addie!

The ending of this book caught me off-guard! A lot of things happened at once, and a lot of information was made known to both Addie and us at the same time. I can't be specific, but many intense scenes led up to a cliffhanger that has me desperate to start Heartrender! (It was this part of the book that broke my heart!)

The reason this book didn't get a full 5 stars has to do with Addie. She kinda rubbed me the wrong way. I appreciated her journey and her struggle in book 1, but I felt like she was somewhat arrogant and frustrating in this book. I'm willing to cut her some slack based on other information we learn later, but it still left me a little irritated.

Like Heartmender, I would definitely recommend this book! This book is both a fantasy and a romance while also being a Christian allegory. If any of that appeals to you, I would highly suggest reading Heartmender! Heartbreaker, despite being a sequel to the very amazing Heartmender, did not disappoint! (Good thing I have a copy of Heartrender or I would be much more upset about the cliffhanger!)

More adventure, more romance, more heartache - Heartbreaker took the high stakes and character growth from Book 1 and kicked them up a notch! I loved exploring more of this fascinating, vividly-described world and getting to know more about the characters and their histories. Addie still has some maturing to do, but she's come so far from the timid girl in Barracks and I could really appreciate her struggles and triumphs as she embraced her role as the Bellata. And we got to see more of Silas! Oh, my heart. He's facing struggles of his own, but I just adore his strength and steadiness and his cute little grins :) Claire and James as travel companions added just the right touches of wisdom and snark, and I enjoyed getting to know some new characters as well! Burton has created another gripping, thought-provoking, hard-to-put-down story, and I can't wait to read Book 3!

A solid installment in the Heartmender series, Heartbreaker starts off right where book 1 left off. Addie is still healing from her trials in book 1, but has some new friends to help her face new challenges.

While it started a little slow for me, once Addie and Co got started on their journey, it definitely kept me intrigued and turning pages! James is a treasure and we all need once. Silas was....well, that ending took a wild turn and I have some feelings. Was very intrigued by Damien and am very interested to see where his journey goes!

So much more growth for Addie as she confronts new trials and steps into her power as the Bellata. I definitely need more details on her powers because there is so much potential for awesome from her corner. Excited to see what book 3 brings!

And that ending! Whew. So much packed into a short time and, not exactly a cliffhanger, but man, am I excited to see what book 3 brings for all these characters!

I absolutely LOVED seeing more of Decim. Burton takes us to richly diverse world of many landscapes, people, and conflicts. I also loved seeing how Addie and Silas’s relationship continued to grow. My FAVORITE part of the book, though, was how Addie consulted a book when she needed to know what to do next on her travels, and it was a great reminder of how we consult the scriptures when we need to know what to do.

The ending was phenomenal, just like Heartmender. And when she received her alme? Epic, all the way around. Ooh, and Lord Farmount is my guilty pleasure. I can’t wait to see how Burton wraps it all up in the third novel!

Woah. This book was something else.
In a good way.

Addie was quite frustrating throughout this whole book (but she came to terms at the end, and I really like that!!). Silas was interesting, and still as loveable as before. Claire was HILARIOUS, and so 3 dimensional, and James was the perfect (as Claire says) "Grandpa", but you know who stole the show for me??
DAMIEN.
Maybe I just like those morally grey characters, but ahhhh I loved him?? I wanted him to be redeemed SO BAD. I want to know more about his past. I love was V. Romas Burton did with him as a character and I can't wait to see where they ALL go in Book Three!!

Book review: heartbreaker 💔 book 2 of the Heartmender series by V.Romas Burton

“Not even a day old and you already damaged your new heart. Are you sure you’re worthy of it?”

Addie has her new heart, her true love, and her purpose…. Bellata. As Bellata she now knows that she serves truth. Now with Eman, Silas, Lyle, James and Claire what could go wrong?

Her new heart will be tested to the breaking point in this book ……but what a journey heartbreak is ! I love following charters I fell in love get more growth and this book doesn’t disappoint.
This story brings more characters to get to know and more secrets to uncover and makes you ask the question what voice are you listening to?
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ / 5 stars

This book was a 5 start read and I can’t wait to read the final book in the series.

V Romas Burton has a wonderful way of combining magic and life lesson together to make you question yourself and what voice you listen to.

The second book in trilogies is usually my favorite, and Heartbreaker isn’t an exception.

But I’m also glaring at Burton and Heartbreaker FOR BREAKING MY HEART!!!!!!! GUYS THE PAINNNNNNN!!!!!!😫😭🥺

I will still endlessly fangirl and adore this book though😍😂

I entered with many questions, got a few answers, but left with just as many Q’s as I brought with me! So much action, pain, strife, revelation, and goodness packed into one book.

Got no idea how all the problems we have at the end of this installment in the trilogy will be fixed, but I’m SO PUMPED to read book three to find out!! (But also sad....because THE END OF THE STORY)

Also, let me mention really quickly how the messages in Heartbreaker were awesome too👌🏼And the characters were still just as dynamic and awesome.

I’m likely to have book hangover after this series.

ANYWAY! If you haven’t yet, SERIOUSLY READ THIS BOOK IMMEDIATELY (unless you haven’t read Heartmender, in which case you can read that first😉)!!!!!!!!

Content in this one is more violent and painful than the last, but still has kissing-only romance and no cuss words. But still, blood and pain and deep things so older teens and up is my recommendation.

I really enjoyed Heartmender, the first book in this series, but Heartbreaker is better. It jumps right into the middle of the action where Heartmender ends (I wish I would have gone ahead and reread Heartmender before reading Heartbreaker). That being said, the action took me by surprise and hooked me immediately. Heartmender felt a little slower to me as we were eased into the world and getting to know the characters. Heartbreaker gets right to it! There's a combination of new and returning characters, but even the returning characters have undergone growth. I liked the dynamics of this book and the character interplay, even though there are parts that are literally heart breaking.
I enjoyed the world building more in this book, and feel like the author has done a good job showing character growth, even though that growth has some serious growing pains--both for the characters and for me as a reader!
I highly recommend this series. It'll suck you in and hit you hard with all the feels. I'm excited to see where the third book goes.

Heartbreaker is the stunning sequel to Heartmender. This book is so beautiful. The covers for this series are some of the prettiest covers I own. I'm rating this book a 4.5. I was scared when I started reading because it took me a while to get into Heartmender, so I wasn't sure how much I would like this book. It took about 100 pages but I enjoyed this one a lot more than book one. I think my favourite thing about this book is how clear the lines between good and evil are. Everything about the bad side screams bad, from the colours to the physical descriptions, while the good side is good and you can clearly tell they are good. It's such a fun thing to see, since so many books focus on the 'grey' area between good and evil. Looking at this through the Christian allegory perspective, there is no 'grey' area between worshipping God or being against Him. I am looking forward to seeing where book three takes this!

Book 2 was exciting and contained the same series of allegorical trials that also felt like puzzles to be solved that I enjoyed from the first book.

The characters were still realistic and consistent, but because certain things were happening to the characters, they weren't as likable. However, that was believable considering their circumstances. If they didn't act prideful or pugnacious, they wouldn't have been realistic. Even though it was hard to like the character sometimes, it taught an important lesson but how ugly our sin makes us.

I also appreciated how the book shows that God and His plans can be the heartbreak. His plans are necessary and ultimately good but can along the way shatter us. The book shows that it is necessary to be broken in order to change, grow, and start on a better path.

The second part of the Heartmaker Trilogy, Heartbreaker, by V. Romas Burton, continues the amazing story of Addie, the unassuming teen-turned-warrior. Under the direction of Eman, the Heartmeander, Addie and her closest friends begin a quest to fulfill the prophecy and convince the realm's twelve leaders to join Eman and restore peace to the land. There are plenty of twists and turns, a phenomenally crafted plot, and dynamic and relatable characters. A brilliant adventure that unfolds beautifully with each page.

I was in the edge of my seat during the entire read. I had forgotten some important details and had to look back to Heartmender and I'm so glad I did. I'm not sure which I enjoyed most - the twists and turns and unraveling mysteries of the plot or watching the character development of many of my favorites! This was definitely a fun, quick read and I so loved falling back in (and out of) love with some of the major characters all over again. Can't wait for #3!!

If you want a classic allegory vibe with a relatable heroine, soul-pricking stakes, and are a fan of John Bunyan, Ted Dekker, or Tosca Lee, then this series is FOR YOU. The ending of this second book was just wow!
