Jasper Reid is everything his fans of The Obsolete want him to be. Whether it’s for the dance-y pop songs he writes, his flirty and mischievous onstage persona, or the masterful way he plays along with the fans’ ships, he’s the perfect performer. On the verge of turning twenty-one, in what’s expected to be the next boy band phenomenon, his life could not get any better.

Until he meets Ryan, an irresistibly attractive dancer, who is added out of the blue to their vocal band. Jasper is quick to call bullshit on the manager’s reason for this addition, but even quicker to accidentally flirt with their new member.

This close to the band’s success, Jasper’s pissed to be the one vocally training this dancing liability. Between Jasper’s outspoken nature and Ryan’s anxiety, tensions rise. When a plan to improve Ryan’s confidence backfires, putting the spotlight on something Jasper’s been ignoring all his life, truths come to light.

Can Jasper let himself get swept up in his own real-life, convoluted, fanfic love story while protecting Ryan from the negatives of fame, uncovering the real reason their manager added him, and saving the band? Or will a photo scandal throw everything out in favor of some satisfyingly petty revenge?

CW: This book features an on page suicidal panic attack, discussions of previous suicide attempt, discussions of emotional manipulation, and instances of sexual coercion.

I wish this worked for me more, because it seemed like something I'd love. And I did like it, but not as much as I expected.

My main issue is the present tense because present tense and I are not the best of friends, and it rarely works for me. Every time I read it, I'm pulled out of the story and have to reread what just happened because it's so jarring.

The few times it has worked for me was in fantasy books, and this was a contemporary one so...

Anyway, I liked the story and the characters, but I felt like there was too much going on at times, so I never fully got attached to anyone except Blake who stole the show by being funny.

I like Ryan and Jasper together, they're cute. Since Ryan is demi, and Jasper's just realising he's gay, there's a different dynamic to their relationship than most others.

They're asking each other if things are okay, not rushing into anything etc. Meanwhile Jasper's dealing with coming out to his friends and eventually the world and Ryan is there to support him, it's sweet.

I think the struggles both of them faced were written realistically, but some of them came out of nowhere. So the story could've benefited from half of these issues being in this book and the other half in the next, because not enough time was given to each issue before moving on to the next.

The book could also use some trigger warnings at the start. I'm personally not affected by the content, but I know some people have those triggers.

The ending is a bit of a cliffhanger, but also not a bad place to end the book, it could stand on its own.

ALSOOOO, there is a song at the end, it's pretty good.

I used to follow this author when she was drafting this book . I was devastated when she took the story down online but omg it's published?
The full story is so close to my heart that I couldn't resist buying it. I'm sad this is just part of the full story, but hopefully the rest will come in another book? Surely she has to because the rest of the Jasper and Ryan story is full on.
Anyway I'll stop talking about that now
Here is my review!!
This book is such a empowering story. RySper are great together and their relationship is sweet. They support each other and that support helps them both grow. I loved how they didn't miscommunicate, and whenever they messed up they own it straight away instead of dragging it out just to be dramatic. I appreciate the story having a healthy relationship.
The way Jasper handles Ryan's mental illness is so compasionate and sweet. Knowing how the full story goes, I really noticed and adored the way Jasper is towards Ryan.
OMG Leo was in this book!!!!!!!! I screamed when I read his name on the page!!! Ughhh please tell me there's another book coming because that one scene with him had me wishing I could re-read all his parts in the original story.
I forgot about all the things Chris did to the band. More reasons this needs to be a series or something.
I can't believe this is published. I was one of the first readers of the original and this is so crazy, I hope the author does well and publishes the rest of the story!

What a story! From beginning to end it’s captivating. The band all have their own stories but Jasper and Ryan are pretty much the headliners. Seeing justice served is amazing but seeing a love story flourish is perfect. This book grabs you, pulls you in and leaves you pleased with its conclusion.

I chose to read this ARC because it had an interesting premise. And it definitely had good moments. But overall, I found the writing style to be choppy and hard to read. It brought me out of the story many times, especially at first while I was trying to figure out who everyone was and what was happening. The characters weren't introduced well so it took me a couple of chapters to figure out who was who.

I'm trying hard to write a helpful review for this book and add some pros and cons but am having trouble keeping it balanced. What I liked were some of the sweet moments between Jasper and Ryan, Jasper's very real struggle with coming to terms with his sexuality, and Ryan's demisexual representation.

The cons are:
- Difficult to follow
- Timing not clear - seemed to jump around a bit
- Very farfetched - some of the things that happened were ridiculous
- Both Ryan and Jasper's personalities were not consistent through the book
- Ryan's mental health issues were serious, and then seemed to disappear and not be referenced for chapter upon chapter.
- The whole premise of Ryan being added to the band made no sense so that was hard to reconcile.
- The other band members felt a bit like props.

Also be aware that it's not a steamy MM read if that's what you are expecting. Really not much happens on page but kissing.

Overall, I will not be continuing with the series as it doesn't seem to be for me. I finished this book, but it was difficult to get through even though I was interested to see how it would end.

2/5 stars.

This is the story of Jasper and Ryan, it is the first book in the Do You Ship US series. Please read the trigger warnings. It ends in a cliffhanger. I love books about bands. It is written well with great characters. The drama keeps you turning the pages.

I received this book as an Arc and I am happily reviewing it voluntarily.

Our two main characters have some rough times here because of a manipulative schemer who works hard to damage their emotional well being as well as their relationship, but the blockbuster of an ending is perfect. Ryan and Jasper and the friends who have their back, love and support each other and plot sweet revenge on the one who would keep them apart.

I’ll be honest this book was a bit of a struggle for me to get Through, but I did push through and complete it. The beginning of the story is a bit weak. There was a lot of drama brought in that kind of blindsided you as to why it happened or where it came from. I feel that the ending was rather rushed, and that not everything was wrapped up. Overall I feel like I should give it a three out of five stars just because it deserves an A for effort, but in reality, this is not a book I would recommend to others. It would be interesting to see how the author progresses and grows because there’s good bones. I just feel that the author tried to cram too much into one story when this could have potentially been spread out over two or three books.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

The book was somewhat complicated with five (perhaps 7) main characters, two of whom are the focus - Ryan and Jas. They are both complicated - Jas being loud and impulsive yet scared and tentative when it comes to love and sex. Ryan having several attempts at suicide is more confident but subject to panic attacks.

It amazes me how the two understand each other and their specific needs as that would not be normal undermost conditions.

The reason I did not give the book 5 stars is because of an ending without an epilogue which one is begging fro, and for throwing in too many complications. It gets to 4 because I loved the base story and the development of the two characters of focus.

I wanted to like this book. I wanted to like it so much. The blurb hit all of my buttons and it sounded so incredibly good. However, I felt really let down once I got into the story itself. While Ryan and Jasper were intriguing characters, they gave me a bit of whiplash. Their personalities seemed to switch in order to keep up with the plot. Sometimes, Jasper would be softer with Ryan and then turn right around and have a different personality less than a page later. There were a few time jumps that made me wonder just how long the story had been taking place.

The plot itself has a lot of really good potential. Boy band struggling with a borderline abusive manager as well as getting used to a new member in the band. Fan service. The way the fans act. But it didn't come together as seamlessly as it should've and at every moment, it felt like there were too many threads trying to be pulled at once and just getting incredibly knotted.

There are also several content warnings that should be in place, including an on page suicide attempt and discussions of a past suicide attempt. One of the characters struggles a lot with his mental health. Please proceed with caution if these are triggering topics for you.

Jasper is one of the main reasons The Obsolete has so many fans shipping the band members. He flirts just to rile up the fans, and they love him for it. But, when a new band member is dropped on them without any prior warning, Jasper is quick to question their manager’s true motives, especially since the new member, Ryan, is a dancer, not a singer.

Ryan doesn’t fit into the band immediately, especially since the rest of the band members have already formed friendships, and he finds it difficult to get any of them, in particular Jasper, to accept him as a member. But when Jasper is forced to help train him, and get his singing up to scratch, Jasper and Ryan find themselves spending more and more time around each other, and the fans are quick to come up with a new favourite ship – but what if, this time, it wasn’t fictional?

I absolutely loved both Jasper and Ryan, and following their growing relationship. In particular, I enjoyed following Jasper as he slowly came to the realisation of what exactly he felt. Jasper had been brought up in a very religious household, and pushed towards a relationship with a woman he feels absolutely nothing for. But when Ryan comes along, something changes, and he starts to wonder whether he might’ve been gay all along. Jasper really struggles coming to terms with his sexuality, mostly because he is scared that the other band members won’t accept him, and that he will lose his friends. Fear such as this is certainly saddening to read about, but Ryan is next to Jasper every step of the way, to support him, and to, slowly, fall in love with him.

There is plenty of depth to this story outside of just Jasper and Ryan’s relationship. The band find themselves facing legal issues with their contracts, as their manager scrounges every last penny he can out of the band without giving them any of it. This thread of the story was particularly interesting to follow, as the band become aware of just what their contracts contain, and try to work their way around some of the clauses that seem to simply box them in. I must say, I absolutely hated their manager, Chris. I don’t think I could’ve hated a character more. He is simply vile, using blackmail against the band members to get what he wants, and having absolutely no care about the actual members of the band. He causes so much emotional damage, simply for his own monetary gain. He is an absolutely vile man, and my hatred for him is a testament for how well his character was written. Like Jasper, I would absolutely love to punch him in the face!

I will admit, it did take me a while to properly get into this book. I spent the first few chapters slightly confused, as things jumped around a little and there wasn’t much explanation as to who the characters were. However, once I figured out who the characters were, things made infinitely more sense, and by the halfway point, I couldn’t put the book down. In fact, I fell asleep reading it, because I didn’t want to put it down to go to bed.

There are a lot of mental health matters covered in this book, and I do like that the trigger warnings are in the blurb, so you can be aware of what you will find within this book before you decide to read it. Ryan in particular suffers a lot in this book, and there are some scenes that are very difficult to read, so do be prepared going into this book that these scenes are very distressing. I truly felt for Ryan, he has already gone through so much before the events covered in this book, and he goes through plenty more during the book. He is a character I really wanted to give a big hug to.

Even though he isn’t particularly a ‘main’ character, I think Blake really stole the show in this book. He is incredibly humorous, as well as amazingly supportive of his friends. He and Jasper are great friends, and while Ryan may be someone that Jasper needs, Blake is also important to Jasper, but purely as friends, nothing more. He is always ready to drop things to be there for Jasper, and offers support and consolation when needed, as well as simply being around to crack some jokes and cheer everyone up. I think everyone needs a friend like Blake!

I really enjoyed reading this book. It is the start of a very promising series, and I can’t wait to follow The Obsolete as their story continues throughout the series. If you are a fan of celebrity romances, drama, scandals, slow burn romance, and powerful friendships, this is absolutely the book for you!

Jasper and the band The Obsolete have been chart toppers for a year with their vocals. Along comes Ryan, a young dancer whose voice isn’t strong enough yet for vocals, thrust into the band as a new member to add choreography and a new voice. Jasper and Blake have been the more well-known band members, known as #BlaSper to their fans, and they joke around a lot with snappy comebacks. When handsome Ryan joins the band, fans embrace #RySper also, as Jasper includes Ryan in the joking. As Jasper becomes more aware of problems with their manager, he gets the band members to start to see the behind the scenes manipulations going on, and he is the one to work to protect them all, especially Ryan as the two grow closer together. As the band members learn more about themselves and each other, the dynamics change as they stand up more for themselves as a group, and as relationships grow and change, leading to a big surprise at their last concert.
Interesting characters are well developed, as we continually learn more about them as individuals as the book progresses. There are a lot of twists and turns as the manager works to manipulate the band that the members work to counteract as they take more control for themselves. The events in the story ring true to me as some of the possible pressures that could be put on young band members just starting out, with the excitement of a blossoming new career and the lack of awareness of things to look for when signing that initial contract and all the implications.
An interesting look behind the scenes into the possible life of the popular boy bands that continually crop up, some lasting while some flame out quickly.
I believe there will be another book in this series and would be interested in knowing if it will follow this band or not. The possibility is there at the end of this book. 4.5 stars

I started following this author when she was getting ready to publish Book 2, and starting edits on Book 3, and I really feel like I've gotten to know these characters before I even picked up Do You Ship Us? For fans of rivals-to-lovers, hurt/comfort, and fanfiction, I really recommend this book.

Claire captures the nature of shipping so well, it was taking me back to my 1D days, and I couldn't help laughing at the shipping wars the members of boyband The Obsolete were trying to start. The banter between all of the members is great, especially Blake and Jasper, whose friendship really shines. I love how supportive all of the boyband members are to each other, especially when they band together against abusive manager Chris. And I ADORE the relationship between newcomer Ryan and heartthrob Jasper, who isn't quite sure he's gay, until a kiss with Ryan changes everything. I think it's really important to see healthy relationships in fiction, so I love that, despite their ups and downs, Ryan and Jasper help each other to work through their respective struggles (mental health and past toxic relationship for Ryan, coming out and breaking up with his girlfriend for Jasper).

I also love the demisexual rep for Ryan. I felt like it was done really well, and I'm excited to see more representation in Books 2 and 3.

But, I'm knocking off a star and half because of the pacing. Sometimes, it was hard to figure out when things were happening, and so I felt like the relationship progressed a little fast in the first 100 pages. I also didn't love that more time felt devoted to Chris than to the boys, because the scenes where the boyband was just messing around together was where the book really shined for me. Still, this series has so much potential and I'm really excited to see what Claire does in the following books.

I really really enjoyed it and it definitely made me want to continue the series.
I usually read books with older MCs and reading about younger boys who are figuring themselves out and slowly getting to know each other before taking steps is refreshing and so cute.

Overall I particularly loved Jasper. Hiding behind a flirting, sarcastic, easy going facade is a very mature, selfless, empathetic soul which shows up in the second half of the story. I was very impressed by his good heart.

Ryan on the other hand, I felt a lot for him and his mental health issues, however I couldn't forgive him certain behaviours and statements, and I really really loved that Blake was such a good friend to stand next to Jasper and make sure that he's not taken advantage of. I believe Ryan is sincere, however I felt like overall Jasper was a more transparent character compared to Ryan, who sometimes seems like his own enemy, and I look forward to understand him better, finding out more about his past and also hope he will find his peace, for him but for Jasper too.

I expect there will be some more drama in the next books but I hope my heart will not break for Jasper too much, I grew very fond of him ❤️

I really like the other characters too, particularly Blake and Ryan's mum.

And the last scene omg! Let me say imo the last scene almost makes the whole book worth reading, it was so good. The song, and the whole vibe, I felt like I was there in the crowd and I could hear it.

Looking forward to seeing what happens next 💕

I wanted to like this book so bad. I adore famous tropes and this had me excited. Sadly, I DNF at 26%.
The premise is strange to me, a boy that can't sing but is a good dancer just gets added to an already established boy band and all the while it seems their manager is trying to sabotage them and get rid of the lead. But why? It all seems counter productive and unrealistic to be honest.
I could plod though that though, what turn my attitude to this book is where plot devices are just being thrown in and undeveloped.
Ryan recieves a text from a fan page, it's mentioned twice, he sees the fan and kisses her - off page, wait I thought he was gay?, and then randomly finds out it was his bandmate Jasper all along. What? There was so much that could have been done here, its a plot for a whole book that's pushed in and resolved in a chapter.
Then there's Ryan divulging his suicide attempt, pre-band, and the idea that the manager gave him a job to stop him trying again.. but again what? Would a manager of a popular boyband who is portrayed as a bit of a d*@k do that? I don't know!
Lastly, and remember I stopped reading quarter way through the book, there is the kiss that came out of nowhere, although I think the author tried to allude to it, that ended with Ryan pushing a sexuality onto Jasper that he has never thought about as far as I can see.
Plot aside I didn't mind the writing style and liked both Jasper and Blakes characters but I just couldn't read on.

Fanfic Band Relationships

‘Though Jasper’s still working out where he stands on anything past kissing, he knows he can’t get enough of Ryan’s tongue moving against his with delicate purpose. Considering he came in here to tell Ryan he’s not ready for anything more, his body sure as hll doesn’t agree. Turned on but too nervous to do anything about it. Being pressed against Ryan in his single bed is simultaneously the best part of his day and the most torturous.’

Claire Rosalind has created a complex boyband story where Jasper, an outspoken yet virginal member of boyband The Obsolete, must come to grips with his sudden attraction to newest member Ryan.

Ryan has been thrust into the band, for nefarious behind the scenes reasons, and his questionable mental health concerns are tempered with his own attraction to Jasper.

There are levels of contradicts that make this story, at times, emotionally complicated, but eventually we learn about the characters and cheer for their well being and success.

I liked the overall story, and the relationship building was great. I'm not the biggest fan of third person present perspective, because it pulls me away from the story. I think if it had not been for that aspect I would have given this a full five stars. The antagonist of the story was repulsive enough that I instantly hated him. There were a few tear-jerker moments that had me reaching for the tissues (I think there might have been more if the story had been told from a more personal perspective). I wish the romance had gone a bit further, but I do respect that this is the first book in a series and the author is probably building us up for subsequent books. The setting is purposely ambiguous, but I don't see that as a bad thing. In fact, the setting could even be some place that exists only in the imagination of the author and I would be totally fine with it. I loved the ending. I'm positive that I will want to read the sequel, because I want to see Rysper develop even further.

I liked this story, Jasper is an interesting character, quite restless, always mulling over something in his head. And Ryan is a little more complex, someone who suffers from anxiety and has been through some tough times.

Although at first they clash and Jasper has a hard time accepting Ryan as a new member of the band, he soon begins to see that this rejection is not such. They feel attracted to each other, and they begin a relationship that at first seems fragile but as the days go by and they overcome different obstacles, such as the machinations of their manager who only sees them as a source of money, and a Ryan's ex who won't give up.

In general it is an entertaining story, but it leaves several loose ends, so I hope that a next book will come soon.

3.5 stars. This was a cute story and I love the idea of two members of a boy band getting together. However, it needs a good edit (the inconsistency of it being told mostly in present tense but occasionally switching was jarring; it jumps back and forth in POV from Ryan to Jasper with no clear indication of when/why; there was at least one it’s/its mixup, and on one page the words ‘tyre’ and ‘tire’ both appeared). I also found the ending to be a bit rushed, I found myself wanting to know what happened after the climactic moment. It needed an epilogue or something.

Content warning for suicidal thoughts and attempted suicide.

Please note - there are no trigger warnings listed in the book - there are suicidal thoughts, attempts and mental health issues. The ideas for this book were good and I thought the demisexuality and consent topics were really well done. Sometimes I had to go back and check which POV was being used, it felt like the MCs switched characters. I think this book would have been improved by not including so many different sub-plots to have time to go further in-depth. I think this author has a lot of potential and it will be interesting to see how she develops.

This book was difficult to get through. It simultaneously rages against the Hollywood machine that would make a boy band, but then expects the reader to believe that the manager agreed to put a non-singing amateur dancer in the band because he attempted suicide. Huh?
It started out intriguing, but it kept doing the same thing, without explaining itself. I really struggled to get through to the end.

I really enjoyed this book. I loved the dynamic between all the band members and how Jasper and Ryan were portrayed.
The journey of the band is interesting and ell done and I am keen to see what happens in the next story.
This is very very slow burn and when there is a slight suggestion of more than a kiss there are no details which I thought was a shame as I felt invested in them becoming more intimate but it was a bit of an anti-climax.

This is a HFN story. In this book we meet the band The Obsolete, & members Ryan & Jasper. Ryan is a dancer who joins the band as a choreagrapher & presents himself as demi, and Jasper is singer of band & after meeting & getting to know Ryan he's realizing he's gay. Ryan comes with self esteem issues from an abusive relationship & Jasper is afraid to admit he's gay due to his upbringing. This story is how they go about trying to come to grips with their personal lives & join as one. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Such a good story. I loved the dynamics of the band members and how they were there with so much support for each other. There’s a lot going on - check the trigger warnings- but the story moves quickly and doesn’t dwell too long on the hard parts. Ryan and Jasper have complicated issues and feelings, related to their pasts, which they have to work through, so their relationship is not all smooth sailing. Looking forward to the next in the series.

This book was in my alleyway but it really needs some warnings before certain events happen. Overall it seems to use today’s society as it’s backdrop and this was evident in the boy band/abusive manager scenario which has occurred in recent times. Jasper and Ryan were interchangeable at times which made the story get confused a bit. Good book but could be triggering to some.

Story is well written and interesting. Characters are distinct with no similarities that make it difficult to differentiate them.
