Magical meets deadly in this YA fae fantasy where mortals and fae battle viciously for the same land. Shadow & Crystal Thorns is the 2nd book in the Fae and Crystal Thorns series by Kay L. Moody. Be sure to start with book 1, Flame & Crystal Thorns.
War would be easier if she could tell who was right and who was wrong.
Chloe remains in Faerie, but she's only supposed to stay long enough to defeat the bloodthirsty mortals who are trying to claim the land for themselves. But now she's not so sure she wants to return to the mortal realm, especially when the devastatingly handsome fae, Quintus, keeps asking her to stay.
Even worse, defeating the mortals becomes more difficult by the day while their numbers continuously grow. She also learns exactly why they want the land. As a mortal herself, it's hard to disagree with them. But they can't take Faerie unless they steal it from the fae.
Alliances blur when Chloe realizes both sides deserve what they seek. But only one of them can win.
If you like the rich world building of Throne of Glass, the enemies to lovers romance of Once Upon a Broken Heart, and the mythical creatures and twisty plot of The Cruel Prince, then you’ll devour Kay L. Moody’s breathtaking young adult epic fantasy series.

Shadow and Crystal Thorns is an exciting addition to the Fae and Crystal Thorns series. The story picks up where Flame and Crystal Thorns left off. Chloe, Quintus, and their allies prepare to fight to save Faerie from the iron poisoning that has infected the land and from the humans that threaten to destroy them all. Determined to end the upcoming battle and return home to her sister, who is gravely ill, Chloe struggles physically and emotionally. However, Chloe has the help of Quintus and others, and they won’t stop until Faerie is restored and safe.
An intelligent, strong, and determined young woman, Chloe is a layered and dynamic protagonist who wants to be accepted for who she is. Chloe often feels misunderstood or that she is ordinary and that no one takes an interest in her. I think that is the farthest thing from the truth, but considering her sister is a ruler of faerie, and most of the beings she is with are more powerful than her, I can see why she might feel this way. Everyone has self-doubt, and I thought her feelings and her way of dealing with them were very relatable. Chloe also faces her anxiety and her fears, which I thought was fantastic. Her panic is described so well, and trying to conquer her fears and do what she can to help others shows how strong she is.
I also love that Chloe realizes everyone has their strengths and weaknesses. She learns what her strengths are and uses them to help Faerie and defeat the humans who threaten everything. Chloe is a healer, and she takes advantage of her knowledge to find a way to heal Faerie. She also learns that getting help from others is not a sign of weakness. It’s the opposite, in fact, as her friends prove time and again.
Quintus is the perfect partner for Chloe. Always by her side, Quintus is determined to do all he can to support and protect her. I love Quintus!! He is so loyal and devoted, and the chemistry between him and Chloe is the best!! Their relationship is challenged a bit in the story, and they both have to come to some difficult realizations. I’ll be interested to see what the future of their relationship looks like, and I’m so hoping they will find a way to be together.
Ludo and Mishti also accompany Chloe and Quintus on their quest, and all use their unique strengths to restore order to the land. The dynamics between this group are interesting, as they are all so different, though they have similar goals. Their journey is so dangerous and exciting, and they can never let their guard down. It seems like every time they think they may have a moment of peace, something happens to disrupt their security.
This is a great ya fantasy series. It has action and danger, intrigue, and surprising twists. And a dragon! Did I mention the dragon because I love this creature!!! Every book is better with a dragon, and the relationship this one has with Chloe is so great.
Thanks so much to Kay L. Moody for providing me with an advanced copy of the book. All thoughts are my own.
Shadow & Crystal Thorns picks up right where book 1 left off. I really like this series and can’t wait for book 3! The author has created a beautiful world. I’ve read other Fae books and I thoroughly enjoy the world of Faerie the author has created. We find ourselves back into Chloe’s nightmare. Trying to save the human realm from sickness and now battling the human’s in Faerie where she lost her foot. Quintus doing everything in his power to help her succeed. What was realized in book 1 was to save the human realm, Faerie needs to be healed. Unfortunately they need to rebuild. Chloe and Quintus seem to feel differently. with her sister being the High Queen of the different places in Faerie Chloe would never go against her word. It doesn’t help that Chloe freezes up in fear whenever she’s in a high anxiety situation. Because of that nobody trusts her ideas. Claiming she doesn’t really want to help. How could she do anything on her own? Is she able to keep her lack of foot hidden from her sister? Mishti’s influence on Chloe could lead her in the right/wrong direction. Right because they could succeed in the task of healing the land and stopping the humans. Wrong because she would be defying her sister. Can Mishti be trusted? What about Quintus and Chloe? I don’t know why Chloe is so against giving him a chance. I get it she’s mortal and won’t live forever but he doesn’t care. He’d rather be with her, the development between these two takes us in both directions. So many questions and so many answers. I’m not sure how much I should disclose that won’t cause spoilers. This story/series is wonderful. If you like books about Fae and are just coming across this book, please read book 1 first. If you’ve read book 1 it’s now time to continue into book 2. If you’re like me and didn’t like how book 1 ended the author redeemed it but picked up where book 1 left off. So worth it! Again I’ll reiterate I can’t wait till book 3!
Book 2 in the series does an incredible job at picking up in the series where we left off. Chloe, Quintus, Mishti, Elora, and Brannick are fighting the war against the mortals. They are still trying to save the Fae from iron poisoning. This story is full of action, lots of fantasy, drama, suspense, and a little romance. There are a few subplots going on. The author ties them all in so well that it all still runs so smooth. That ending! Cliffhanger, didn’t see that coming…I can’t wait for the next book. This is definitely one of the best YA fantasy series I’ve read.
I received this ARC from Kay L. Moody! It releases October 18th! Thank you!!!!
In Shadow and Crystal Thorns, we return to the world of Faerie once again. Though Chole is not fully whole, she learns to live with the events from the previous book.
Mishti quickly became a favorite character of mine. However, Quintus still has my heart.
Strong willed, bold and beautiful female characters are scattered through the pages of a wonderfully epic fantasy. Elora, Chloe and Mishti remind me so much of other beloved characters I have read.
Returning to Faerie was every thing I had hoped for and more. Kay L. Moody's world building and character development will captivate you and keep you longing for the next book.
The cliffhanger made me want to sit Kay down and have her start writing immediately! I need to know what happens next!
This is the second book I have read by Kay L. Moody, the first being book one of the Fae & Crystal Thorns series. After finishing the first book I couldn’t wait for book two to finally come out. Chloe is having an internal struggle between what is right and wrong. And where she feels she belongs, she knows she should return to the mortal realm, finding someone to love her and have a family once was her greatest wish but now she wants to be selfish and stay in Faerie with Quintus. Chloe’s realization in book one about sometimes having to be selfish to save others later, but it comes back to haunt her. Right away Mishti is there her sword drawn at Chloe and Quintus. Mishti is angry and hurt, she had just lost Mila a dear person to her and Chloe seemingly, through her eyes, abandoned her for a Fae. Only pointing her sword at Chloe does Quintus’s words break through her anger. She doesn’t know what to do. Everyone in Faerie was taken there against their will, she knows the land belongs to the Fae and that stealing it is wrong but why does anyone have to die for it. All Mishti wants is a chance to make her own decision for once, first she was manipulated by Ansel, and then Portia, fighting and killing was never what she loved doing but she did it to survive. Mishti had been sent to the Crystal Caves to kill Chloe, but all Chloe wants to do is heal Mishti of her pain. With her pain gone Chloe feels Mishti will be able to communicate more reasonably. Unlike the first book that has a slower pace into the main events this book starts off right away continuing where the first book ended. Will Chloe be able to save Faerie and the mortals? Can they compromise a solution that everyone can survive in the end? To stay in Faerie or to return to the mortal realm? The world of Fae and Crystal Thorns pulls you in and hooks you from beginning to end I can’t wait for book three Blade and Crystal Thorns coming March 21st, 2023.
It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a book written by Kay L. Moody will instantly become one of my new favorites. Shadow and Crystal Thorns is the latest evidence of this truth.
First off, there's a dragon. An incredibly awesome dragon. A completely terrifying dragon. Although, as Chloe will be the first to admit, she's afraid of a lot of things. But to be fair, as much as I love dragons, I would probably still be completely scared out of my mind to be close to one even if it does have an enchanted bridle.
Second, as I've said before, Chloe is all kinds of wonderful. She's also a complete mess. Hiding the severity of her injury from her sister. Trying to convince herself and Quintus that she can't be with him even though it's quite obvious to everyone else that they can't stay apart for long. Ashamed that she is unable to do anything without help, while being the only person to provide real solutions to the problems that they face. That is actually the beauty of this book, they all need each other, human and fae, magic users and warriors, weak and strong - everyone has a gift that they bring to the story.
And Quintus. He provided us with the most revelations in this story, so many surprises. But he has to decide whether he will trust Chloe or force her to do what he thinks she must, which was his downfall in the past. Will he be able to let go of his hatred of mortals? Can he change?
It's a thrilling sequel. The humans still have the upper hand and are poisoning Faerie. Chloe is the only one able to think outside the box and offer potential solutions, if only the Fae will listen - they are used to beating the humans on their own strength, but these humans have iron and know how to use it.
Can they save Faerie before it's too late? And can the mortals be stopped or must the be sacrificed for Faerie to survive? Read it and see. Trust me, it will be worth your time.
I received a free ARC from the author and have reviewed it willingly.
Having read the first instalment by Kay, I was delighted to be given a chance to read & review Shadow & Crystal Thorns.
This book did not disappoint in any way. We rejoin Chloe, Quintus and the others as they battle to save Fairie from the deadly iron poisoning brought on by Portia, Julian and their ever growing army of mortals.
While struggling to find a way to save Fairie, Chloe also has to learn to cope without her lost foot. Quintus is tireless in his efforts to come up with a solution that will work for her.
After spending many hours pouring over her magical time, Chloe comes across a way that Fairie can be saved and for the cure to work, all six courts of Fairie have to be healed at the same time. In doing so, Fairie learns how to heal itself should the mortals ever try iron poisoning again.
All seems well, until Quintus starts acting strangely. He opens a door to the Crystal Caves that have become a refuge of sorts for both he and Chloe. Until this point, the two were only able to travel to a certain point in the caves, before hitting an impenetrable barrier.
However, this time the duo are able to travel the length of the cave and emerge through to the other end. To put it briefly, Quintus has finally found his "home", a new Fairie court, but one that is not protected by the knowledge of how to heal iron poisoning.
So it seems as one crisis has been averted, another is still likely to happen. We can only hope to find out in the next instalment what will happen with Quintus and Chloe. I for one am looking forward to see what comes next.
I received an advance review copy for free on behalf of Booksirens and I am leaving this review voluntarily. I also pre- ordered the hardcover edition and I am ridiculously happy I did so. Okay, jumping right into this because I am thrilled to be writing this review. The first book truly was a world builder, I am astonished how amazing this follow up installment to the series was. The character growth in the FMC Chloe was truly remarkable, along with other supportive mains. Our lead girl starts off as a meek, anxious character and really comes into her own. She is incredibly relatable in that way. No spoilers but my favorite character is actually that of a mesmerizing creature. There is one scene in particular that I wanted to read a few times over. I laughed multiple times at the impish character of Ludo and man did he make me snort out loud a few times. I actually dreamed about this story before finishing it last night. That’s how deep I was in it! Kay’s worlds she paints are beyond stunning, every new court we were introduced to I was left enraptured. The love story is there but the beauty in Kay’s writing is that you are also incredibly interested everything else going on. You aren’t just rooting for one or two characters and their happy ending. It’s a fantasy tale. My only critique is; I again just need the next one! I need to see where Chloe’s story leads next.
Kay L Moody did such a fantastic job with the world building and character development in the first book, Flame and Crystal Thorns, that it made the transition to this book seamless. This story continues to have everything a fae loving fantasy reader desires.
Diving right in, the main character Chloe continues to be the relatable mess we adore. She continues to grow and expand as a character while keeping the essence of what makes her, her. I believe this is something we all strive for in ourselves. Kay L. Moody layering Chloe the way she does makes her feel attainable to us readers. Chloe doesn’t magically obtain the abilities to fix the iron poisoning to cure everyone and everything. Her relationship with Quintus continues to be conflicting and complicated, with just enough swoon worthy moments to keep us wanting more. I appreciated Chloe’s raw honesty in regards that she cannot conquer this quest alone and requires help from others, such as Ludo and Mishti.
Attempting to save both Faerie and the mortal realm from scrupus, while attempting to stay alive themselves made for a suspenseful and intricate story that left me turning pages well into the night. Kay L. Moody had me increasingly invested with each page turn and I cannot wait to continue this journey.
I’m fortunate to have received an eArc of this book and I am leaving this review freely.
Shadow and Crystal Thorns (Fae and Crystal Thorns #2) by Kay L. Moody
This isn't the first book I've read by the author. Shadow and Crystal Thorns is the second book in the Fae and Crystal Thorns Series. This book is an amazing read and I really had a hard time putting it down. I was entrapped from the first sentence.
Chloe is mortal and back with her sister. Things aren't going well for the land and she wants to figure it out. She and Quintus are bonded and she's trying to find a way to break the bond. The quote I chose for Chloe is: “We can’t do nothing. We have to at least stop the mortals from attacking again and from destroying the land even more.”
Quintus is falling for Chloe and knows that she plans on going back to the mortal world. He's hoping to change her mind about that. Will they be able to save the land? The quote I chose for Quintus is: “Perhaps a cushion is the wrong thing to craft. Maybe you need a device that can absorb your weight and move with your leg before your leg ever reaches the top of the wooden foot. A spring might work, or something like it.”
We’re continuing the story of Chloe the human girl with healing abilities and Quintus the Fae on their journey to save the land of Faerie from humans who want to destroy it with iron poisoning 😱 Trying to adapt and endure the pain due to her current physical condition after the tragic event in book 1 while trying to understand her feelings toward Quintus, Chloe must find a way to heal Faerie from iron poisoning alongside her friends and allies. But she realized that her journey won’t be an easy one! Will she, Quintus, and the others be able to succeed in their mission?
The characters: They’re nicely written like always and I really enjoyed seeing the character developments 😄 I hope there will be more epic interactions in the next book!
The plot, the twists, and the world building: It was a bit slow at first, but from the middle until the end of the book, things got more intense! Especially the mind blowing reveal at the end 🤯 I’m excited to explore more of the places in book 3, especially new places (*AHEM* cover of book 1 👀)
Great second book! Chloe still fights to save Faerie while handling the loss of her foot :((( Loved that we got to see Elora & Brannick and how her relationship with Quintus is evolving. Hopefully will get to see more of them together in the next book. Also, that ending got me curious about how things will go on. Can't wait to read the third book 😁
I had loved the prior book in the series, and this one certainly does not disappoint in any way! I loved the story continued perfectly from where we left off on in the series. Needless to say, I was hooked!
Again, the author amazed and intrigued me as I read this installment in the series. I really enjoyed Chloe again in this book, she really has come a long way. I especially enjoyed the descriptions of when we had the battles of fae against humans It was vivid, written with intelligence, and visually stunning to picture. The book had a lot of suspense and action, I was gripped all the way through. I enjoyed Quintus already, and I enjoyed him even more now! The book was a book worth waiting to read, absolutely loved it!
Greatly written with strong anticipation as well as exctiment. I could not put it down. Was impossible not to love and see how this book would turn out. A must read for sure. Without a doubt, I highly recommend!
Kay has done it again! This book was utterly fantastic. Realistic character growth, steady plot development, more magic, a much more prominent dragon (whoo! dragons!), and romantic developments. Everything came to a very pleasing and satisfying ending- of course, with the promise of even more action, adventure, and everything in the next book as well!
This book made me feel silly to be so hesitant to move on from the original Bitter Thorn series. I loved Elora and her story so much it was hard to part from it. But Chloe and her adventure is proving to be just as amazing and even more inspiring! Also, you know, the DRAGON in this one. *chef's kiss*
Highly recommend this book/series to anyone who enjoys stories about fae, magic, dragons, flawed/broken characters, redemption, action & adventure, and clean romance.
I love all of Kay’s books that I’ve read, and this book is no exception! Chloe continues to work to oppose the humans that are trying to take over Faerie. She grows a lot in this book and starts to face her fears. Quintus is swoony and I really enjoyed their romance. The story is fast paced and exciting and I definitely didn’t want to put it down! I can’t wait to see where the story will go next!
I received an ARC through booksirens and I’m voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Shadow and Crystal Thorns is Book 2 in the Fae and Crystal Thorns by Kay L Moody. I thought book 2 was so exciting. Chloe lost her foot and mortals are poisoning Faerie with iron. I like that characters from the first series are also in this series. I found Shadow and Crystal Thorns to be non stop action and I couldn't put the book down. I can't wait to see what happens next. I received an arc for free and am leaving my review voluntarily.
Shadow & Crystal Thorns is the second part in the Fae & Crystal Thorns series by Kay L. Moody. After reading Flame & Crystal Thorns I was curious about what else there was to come in this series. I really liked getting to know Chloe better, but what will Kay L Moody have in store for her in this part?
Another incredible story from Kay. I just love Chloe. She is such a strong character who stops at nothing to save her people no matter what gets in her way. Chloe faces a great evil as she tries to save faire. Portia & Julian just need to die plain and simple. They are truly evil. This story is impossible to put down & I can't wait for book 3. An excellent read.
Who else swoons over a little overprotectiveness love mixed in with a Fae fantasy world?! Kay’s world building of Bitter Thorns just keeps getting better and better. This action packed sequel will have you on your toes throughout the whole book.
What a fantastic read! The author has always had a knack for developing worlds, but this time was truly amazing. I really felt like I was there in each of the 6 courts of Faerie! The character development of both Chloe AND Quintus was great to see as the book went on. It was tough to put down and I can't wait for the third book. I highly recommend this series...and this author.
A battle is brewing between the fae and the humans as they both want the same land. Neither seem to want to share that land. Can peace come? What about a treaty? Who will win? Will the battle rage on? See who wins the battle or if there will be a winner
Chloe and Quintus are with us again! Despite having rescued Elora and Brannick and saved Crystal Thorn Castle, Chloe is still undervalued by her sister, Elora the Queen of Crystal Thorn, and by everyone else too it seems with the exception of Quintus. He values her planning abilities along w everything else about her. She is conflicted; on the one hand she has to admit that her heart definitely reacts to his presence but, on the other hand, she knows that she is mortal and must return to her own world. In the meantime she has to heal Faerie! If she doesn’t then her home realm will also die! Despite Quintus’ faith in her she doesn’t feel at all confident. She can’t fight physically as she faints at the first sign of violence, but she can plan. Slowly she is attracting people to herself who recognise her strengths. As well as healing Faerie she has to deal with the humans who were brought here against their wills. Two have become leaders and are, unfortunately, evil people. They have brought over new people to fight under false pretences.
Elora and her husband Brannick, the Over King of all Faerie are unable to help but Chloe’s little band decide that this is Chloe’s adventure for her to solve.
I love this wold that Kay Moody has dreamed up! It’s magical and truly out of this world. I can’t wait for the conclusion!
This book is fantastic. It picks up right where Flame and Crystal Thorn leaves off.
It is well written, flows smoothly and is easy to read. I read Flame and Crystal Thorn and immediately dove into this book. I'm a bit sad at the moment as it ends in a cliffhanger and now I must wait for the next book, although I eagerly await it's release.
If you like Fae, adventure, romance, this book and series has it all. Once I started the book I couldn't put it down. It kept me engrossed from the first page through the last. Once you start reading you have to keep going to find out what happens next and it leaves you wanting more.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I love this series, it is the second of this series, but there is a whole other series that this goes hand in hand with, though you do not need to read the first series to get into this series and you will not get confused or miss things from the other. This story is filled with magic, wonder,
This book picks up right after the first book ends and continues the story perfectly. Chloe has to deal with multiple issues that she faces through out the book that will give you many different emotions, that will have you laughing, tearing up, and feeling angry about.
My goodness was this an exciting read! My eyes couldn't move from the pages, nothing could move me until I read the last line. I've read all of Kay's books and every single one is a masterpiece. This one however, took my breath away! It takes up precisely after the events of the last book, but amped up all the way through, right to the very end!
I could hardly believe how the plot twisted and spun a web around me, I was like a fly flailing in a web Kay drew me into, trapping me good and solid! With characters such as these, and a story so riveting, I soon found myself enamored yet again.
Poor Chloe, having suffered a major trauma as a child, she is overwhelmed by debilitating fear at even a smidge of danger or battle. She literally loses all ability to think, breath or see, she freezes up like a statue and inevitably passes out from the fear. Not the person to help save a dying world, yet here we are, or here she is, back in Faerie and the fate of both mortal and immortal realms falls squarely on her shoulders. With no ability to fight, no ability to protect herself or those she loves, she faces challenges she shied away from. Truth be told, she still does. To complicate matters, Quintin makes her heart pound just as much as her fear. Chloe's rationale is sound, a Fae is immortal, she is not a mere mortal. I loved seeing how far she'd come, still not over the fear but she really comes into her own in this book.
I loved Quintin from the previous books and this book solidified that. As a Fae, he has, shall we say, lesser emotions until Chloe that is. His character has also evolved superbly and his protectiveness of Chloe leads to a firm emotion. I thought the love and caring between them just beautiful, a fee thorny moments but beautiful.
The fight to save Faerie takes Chloe to come up with an innovative idea and finally she gets the recognition she aptly deserves. But the fighting escalates, Portia and Justin are determined to kill every single Fae, not caring one iota of any consequences that might incur. Yes they were abused by the psychopath Ansel but to erradicate an entire species, to destroy an entire world, is extreme in the very least!
I love Mitshi, really empathise with her but I'm still on the fence about Ludo.... so, if you like major twists, action packed battles, a wonderful plot and storytelling, this series is for you! Oh and there's a dragon, a really cool dragon....
I fell in love with this series from the first chapter of the first book. I couldn’t wait until this one came out. My only complaint is that is was so good I finished it in one sitting. Now I feel lost. I cannot wait until part 3 comes out. I enjoyed this book so much that I headed over to Etsy and purchased a signed copy.
The thing I love lost about this book is that although it’s a work of fiction involving faeries and magic, it’s still relatable. The characters are developed so well. There’s growth, and depth which each one.
Chloe suffers from anxiety when it comes to fighting. She immediately freezes up. The first book kind of explains why this happens to her and why she lacks confidence in herself. But when her family and friends that she cares about is in danger she digs deep and finds strength, bravery, and love. She has such a large heart and is extremely clear headed in the face of danger.
My second favorite part is learning more about Quintus. I was completely shocked by his story and I hope we learn the reasons behind his parents choices and actions. Although he has a lot of growing to still do he made great strides in this chapter and hopefully Quintus and Chloe find away to be together.
Mishti is actually one of my favorite characters. I think her and Chloe’s relationship will evolve to an everlasting friendship. I really hope to get more focus on Mishti. Maybe they find a way to fix the affects of the white tablet? I want to know where she’s from, if she has family back home? How much time has passed?
I also hope we find out way Ludo is actually looking for and why he’s desperately trying to find it.
I have to go read Elena’s story as well I feel like it may give more understanding to Portia, Julian and the rest of the other mortals. I hope they find a permanent solution.
Please do yourself a favor and read this book. If you haven’t read the first book in the series do that first! It’s critical to understanding this one.
