The sands of time know not of oblivion; a connection forged under the desert sun is not so easily forgotten.
It's been two years, and Alice thinks she should be allowed to attend international negotiations with Victoria. What could possibly go wrong?
Turns out the Empire of Zerzura is starkly different to her home country. However, Alice's frown over not being let into the meeting room soon turns upside down when she meets a certain haunting beauty; the catalyst of incoming doom amid desert dunes.
You may know me as Sara, which I prefer to use as a pen name and Nishi as my personal name (and if you must, you can refer to us collectively as the Nocturne System). Albeit I don't write alone, I've only endeavored to share these stories with everyone in more recent years. You might see some significant jumps in quality from our first books to our more recent ones as a result.
A wonderful continuation of the series, this story kept me entertained all throughout. As with the first book, I'm only setting it at 4 stars because the writing itself is not very profound or beautiful, which is something I tend to seek in the books I read--however, I did see an improvement in the writing. There was more narration and detail, alleviating the previous problem of the author relying too much on direct dialogue and thoughts to express ideas. I'm excited to see continued growth of the style in the next book, as I'm hopeful that the craft will only get better.
I still absolutely loved the characters and relationships in this story, as well as the representation within those. A broader world with higher stakes was introduced and developed throughout this book, keeping the momentum of the plot going forward and continuing to cement the story in thoughtful worldbuilding. I really enjoyed seeing more of the world throughout this book and seeing what it brought out in different characters. More elements were added and previous elements were shown in a new light at a pace that wasn't too fast or slow, something that is incredibly difficult to accomplish but was executed very well here.
Another aspect of these stories that I really enjoy is the deviation from conventionality, as the story is taken in directions that I have rarely, if at all, seen in other media. But even for all its uniqueness, the world and events feel fairly real and believable--as much as you can manage in a fantasy world filled with terrifyingly powerful magic, at least. All things considered, the author is clearly creative and an amazing storyteller, which has shone through in all their work. I highly recommend this series.
Whoa, this sequel? Compared to book 1, which I adored, everything’s gotten even better! The storytelling's got way more polish, there’s more complex female characters, and the author isn't holding back on those battle scenes anymore. They had me glued, pages flipping as fast as I could turn them.
The new cast is so rich and interesting! Catherine's got me hooked with those mysterious vibes that scream "tell me everything about you crunchy lady." And Delilah? Obsessed. She's all soft and meek on the surface, but those sneaky hints of her bolder side? Chef's kiss. Can't wait to see what she's got brewing in the next book.
Loving how the mythical creatures pop here in this world. They’re not just chatty pets like in half the fantasies out there; these critters feel straight-up *enchanted*, with that otherworldly spark that gives you that feeling of being in the presence of something powerful.
And the pirate squad? I love them! Nora's layers are so good, Thalia's got that fierce edge, and Audrey brings the humor.
Then there's the romantic cannibalism—dude, I am *here* for it! Who saw that coming without the usual zombie twist? But with the mermaid legacy angle? It just... works, in the hottest, weirdest way. Thank goodness for those first-aid kits, amirite?
The gardens were a vibe, and that statues-coming-to-life bit? So freaking cool. Oh, and the golem lore? Dropped perfectly.
Biggest gasp moment: Delilah straight-up (spoilering) Alice. It was a total blindside, and I mean that as the highest compliment. Did not see it coming AT ALL.
Overall, the characters and their messy, heartfelt relationships (plus that spot-on rep) still steal the show, same as the first book. The world's gotten bigger and badder, stakes cranked up just right, without overwhelming the thoughtful setup. Pacing's on point—new twists and old bits reframed at a chill speed that kept me flipping pages, seeing how it shakes up everyone differently.
What seals it for me is how this thing zigzags into wild, "wait, I've never seen *that* before in a fantasy book" territory, but it all lands feeling real despite the fantasy element. The author's got that rare creative spark and killer instinct for spinning yarns. If you're sleeping on this series, fix that—highly recommend diving in. Gimme Book 3 yesterday!
