Shadowed Intent

Rate this book
Detective Wade’s search for her sister leads to an abandoned building and a man with two teens, a fierce battle where light poles bend like pipe cleaners, and twenty-six unmarked shallow graves.

A sibling addicted to extreme sports used to be her biggest challenge. Now fate has chosen to widen her horizons and test her unique psychic skill set. With her Bernese mountain dog by her side, they must fathom friend from foe while staying one step ahead of the organization responsible for kidnapping those with psychic abilities.

Parker Ratham’s goal of locating psychically talented teens and adults held prisoner takes him deep into the Connecticut forests. On a stormy night, he crosses paths not only with a serial killer, but also a young teen running from unknown assassins.

Each must learn to trust and work as a unit while staying ahead of those seeking to capture or kill.

I love reading series. I mean, who doesn’t? I love seeing new characters get their romance (if I am reading a romance) and minor updates on older characters. So, I always say yes if I have been reading/reviewing a series and an author asks me to review the next book. That was the case with Shadowed Intent. I am glad I did because I got to see Parker get his romance and see what twists this book would bring to the continued storyline of finding the gifted people. I wasn’t disappointed.

Shadowed Intent had an exciting plotline with more twists and turns than a mountain road. Detective Wade is out in the woods searching for her missing sister when she accidentally runs into Parker and Casper. They are with another teenager who has just been saved from being abducted by the organization they have been fighting with. After discovering that Wade has powers like Keira, Parker brings her to their home base. Can Wade help Keira’s found family? Can she help the imprisoned people before more die? And more importantly, can she find her sister before something horrible happens to her?

Shadowed Intent is the 5th book in the Guardians series. It can be read as a standalone book. But, I suggest reading from book 1. That way, you get why Keira and her group are fighting the people they’re fighting. You also will get the background on the different family dynamics and romantic relationships between background characters.

Shadowed Intent takes place in Connecticut with side trips to Texas and Pennsylvania. The author doesn’t get into much detail about where in Connecticut this book takes place. But, if I had to guess, it would be in the western part of the state.

The main characters of Shadowed Intent had some unique abilities. I loved reading how their characters interacted with each other as well as the other members of the team.

Parker. I was super excited when it became clear that this was Parker’s story. The author got more into his background and how his power manifested (the tragic drowning of his older brother). I did think that he was a little too patient with Wade, but given what they were up against, it made sense. I also loved his banter with Casper!! It had me cracking up laughing. His ability was also showcased more in this book. I wish that I could slow down time.
Wade. I got a little irritated by her at first. She refused to listen to Casper when told what was going on. Instead, she brushed her off and treated her like a kid (well, she is, but Casper is much more than that). When confronted with the truth, she didn’t believe it until Casper morphed her and Parker through the abandoned facility. When her power was revealed, I was impressed. Her ability to talk to animals surpassed Keira’s. And her secondary ability was flipping awesome!!! It was something new, and it was scary.
Casper. I loved this spitfire. She was determined to bring down the organization that killed her parents. She was also more powerful than the author lets on. There were glimpses in this book and the previous one. She was also a perfect foil for Wade and Parker (her defacto parents).
The secondary characters (including Wade’s sister, Silver) were just as well fleshed out as they always are with this author. They all brought added depth to the book. While I know Silver will probably be featured in an upcoming but, I hope another character is also featured. I was fascinated by this character and his ability (slow aging).

Shadowed Intent is a romantic suspense novel. It fits those genres well. The romance between Parker and Wade is low-key and kept in the background. But, the author did work in some kissing scenes and one or two nongraphic sex scenes towards the end of the book. This book also had a ton of suspense. I couldn’t put my Kindle down because I had to know what would happen next.

There are two main storylines and a bunch of smaller ones in Shadowed Intent. The main storyline runs throughout this series: Find and defeat the people kidnapping and experimenting on people with abilities. The author did branch off this storyline for several secondary ones (like the serial killer, the kidnapped kids/murdered adults, and how people were being forced into their abilities). The other main storyline centered around Wade, Parker, and Wade’s kidnapped sister. Both of those storylines (and the secondary ones) were well written.

I am going to include a trigger warning in this review. I usually don’t, but I felt that, in this case, it is warranted. The triggers are torture, kidnapping, attempted kidnapping, and mass murder. If any of these trigger you, I recommend not to read the book.

The end of Shadowed Intent was terrific. I loved the final fight scenes with the serial killer and his accomplice. There were things revealed that I didn’t see coming, and there were reunions that touched my heart. The author did wrap up Wade and Parker’s storyline in a way that I loved. Now, I am wondering who will be next. Dacian and Silver? I also want to know who is watching the group but staying hidden. I have a feeling I know who it is, but I don’t want to stay.

Three reasons why you should read Shadowed Intent:

Amazing characters
Great storylines
It can be read as a standalone (see above)
Three reasons why you shouldn’t read Shadowed Intent:

Does have triggering content (see above)
The romance was almost too low-key.
The serial killer. He was pure evil.
I would recommend Shadowed Intent to anyone over 21. There is graphic violence and language. The sex scenes are nongraphic too.

This is book five of The Guardians series and the newest member of the group, Casper, is out on a recee of an old asylum with her mentor and trainer Parker. The others are approaching from the other direction and are looking to find any traces of the missing teens and adults that their enemies have taken. A few of the group have all had the same dream about the place and this leads to more questions about how and why they all had this dream. Is someone else with powers trying to help them, or are they being set up? Casper has the ability to phase herself and others who are holding onto her, through solid objects. She is still new to the team and her youth brings with it a lot of impulsive actions, which Parker is trying to tame. He follows her into the old building and they come across another teenage girl, Gambit (real name Sarah) who is an empath, who is scared of them, having already escaped one prison. Luckily Casper can relate to her and Parker is soon left with two uncontrollable twins to deal with. They come under attack from an unknown enemy, possibly Roth or the Order of Assassins and have to get out quickly.
As they exit, a local detective, Detective Wade and her dog, sees them and follows them to their meeting point. She has questions about who they are and what they are doing in the old asylum, but also about the strange things she saw. She is looking for her sister Silver, who is also a detective, but went missing. She also felt a pull to this site. Her sister was working undercover on a big drugs case and is addicted to extreme sports. The sisters went through the academy together and have hidden their own powers from all. Gambit is pulled to a particular spot in the clearing and soon they discover the end game of a ruthless serial killer. This killer, Henry, is able to negate all their physical powers, leaving most of them defenceless. His partner, Bronx Wickum, is an anomaly amongst his kind, being far older than he looks. He joined the enemy hoping for some assistance with a family matter, but soon comes to realise that he is on the wrong side. Bronx wants Neah Chatham, for her skills in working out how their powers come about and how to stop or alter them with her research. Their boss wants to kill a certain member of the Chatham family, as they are a family destined to bring down the Order of Assassins, if they are allowed to live.
Keira has come a long way from being all on her own, with no family, as members of her long lost family have been found and have joined Nicolai’s group. There are still some to find and this story helps bring about some more news on that front. Wade and Parker don’t seem to get on at all at the beginning, with her dog taking an instant dislike to him as well. But as they say, hate is close to love and another one will find their other half in an unexpected manner. There is even hope for her sister Silver and another of the group. Wade must join forces with Parker and the others, to follow the traces of her sister, other missing children with powers and their parents, as they are also falling behind whoever is in charge of their enemy, always seeming to be one step behind. Wade and Silver’s boss at the police department, Percher, is somehow involved in Silver’s disappearance, as is Henry. They will face one of their most dangerous foes in this one, as they seek to locate the missing and figure out where the next institution is hidden and who is in charge of it all. All the group at their temporary sanctuary, work together with their counterparts, teamed together with those their powers complement, to save those with abilities from being taken by the enemy, or rescue them if already taken. Another cracking adventure for the group, with Major Clannahan playing a huge part in keeping their presence secret, whilst also protecting all those they save. Even a touch of romance on the burner for him! I can’t wait to read Silver’s story next and see what happens next in their search to save others and take down the evil enemy. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

Reily Garrett – The Guardians Bk 5 – Shadowed Intent

Another explosive adventure, even adding the local law!

Here we are in the fifth book of this exciting and original series. Each book gives us more information on the Guardian members, their backgrounds, and the low down on the new members as they are adopted in each leg of this incredible journey. Their battle with the Order of Assassins and their nemesis, “Roth,” the uncle of the Channon family, is in high gear. When the group arrived to check out another location where they thought that more gifted had been held, working their way through the building floors, they were surprised by a local police officer informing them that they were trespassing on private property. Little did the group know that Detective Wade was searching for her sister or what her connection to the Guardian group would be... Off we go on another spectacular leg of the battle to save the gifted and the world.

What did I like? I have read numerous books by this gifted author, and she always impresses me. Her books are always exciting and captivating. I can’t think of one I have not finished in one sit-down read. The characters are the type you wish you could adopt into your family. The storylines are detailed without going overboard, and I am never bored. Even psychic books (like this one) have me on the edge of the chair, looking for something to hold on to and have me believing it. Are the books in this series stand-alone? Well, I suppose you could read just one, but why would you want to miss out on all the different characters or the intriguing storylines that build more and more with each book?

What will you like? Reily’s books will become some of your favorite books because she can capture your heart and take you on a ride you will never forget. Like me, her characters will join the ranks of your top-ranking lineups. But best of all, you can count on an exciting and mesmerizing ride, with the door always open to more to come.

~This book continues with an outstanding adventure series
~First, I’ll state that I received this book as a gift from the author to read and review.
~This is the fifth book in The Guardians series…and it is, once again, a great story. Okay, I will admit it, book three was good…book four took off with new characters and excitement…all of which continued right on into this next book “Shadowed Intent.” With each book we learn more and more about the back story of the characters. It’s like putting together a jigsaw puzzle and once you think you are done…being given additional pieces that fit right in.
~The good characters are very good…the bad guys are evil. This makes for a good classic storyline. I am completely enjoying this series. Is it a standalone? …definitely not. Is it worth going back to the beginning and reading them all? …absolutely!
~There are new developments with each chapter. Secrets are revealed. Not everyone is who you might think them to be.
~There is most definitely a romantic element to each of the book, and this one is no exception. It is not overt or overpowering…the reader spots it right away, but we must wait as the story and the relationships develop.
~This book has a lot to offer…action, intrigue, good vs. bad, team loyalty, and a non-stop, fast paces plot.
~I am looking forward to reading the next book.

Author Reily Garrett certainly does have a very creative mind when it comes to writing and her "The Guardians" series is another fascinating set of wonderful mysteries involving very likeable and unique characters that own strange 'superpowers'. I found the plot of Shadowed Intent was well constructed with enough action, humour and surprises throughout to keep my interest high throughout the whole book. I love the concept of all these gifted characters existing as a family unit and supporting each other. If you enjoy stories with mystery, paranormal concepts, humourous moments and characters with a hint or two of sassy romance well I would suggest trying anyone of Reily Garrett's books.
Looking forward to what comes next from this talented author.

Our heroine is searching for her sister while our hero is on a quest of his own. Fate throws them together, but can they find enough trust to work together? They have a common foe and that is a starting point...

This is book five of the series, but it is written as a standalone. No prior reading is required to enjoy this one.

This is an urban fantasy story with a bit of the paranormal woven in. The story is well written, easy to read and starts off with a bang. Not literally, but it does grab hold of you right away and never lets go. The characters are well done with a firm sense of being that brings the story to life. Overall, this was a fast paced story and I really enjoyed this addition to the series. I can't wait to see where it goes next.

Highly recommended.

I don't know were this story comes in the series. I do know I have not read it. So some of the things in this book I have no reference for. Plus I have a confection, I have a very, very hard time with names. I can't remember them well. So I did have a hard time with ALL the names and keeping them straight. The story is so exciting I had a hard time putting it down. I enjoyed it very much. I loved the way all the people came together to help and take down some of the bad guys. I received a complimentary review copy of the book and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

The plot kept me turning the pages and the twists had me on the edge of my seat waiting to see what would happen next. The wonderful description of the scenes made me feel like I was right in the middle of the action. I would recommend this book to people who enjoy mysteries with a little paranormal. This is the 5th book in the Guardians Series, it can be read as a stand-alone but by reading the previous ones you get a better idea of what is happening and the other characters that are introduced. This is Detective Wade & Parker's story. The characters are well written and believable. The story line will keep you turning the pages with all the twists and turns that you will discover. So sit back and enjoy the ride.

Another great book in the series full of new characters, talents, and excitement. I must admit to getting confused with who has which talent, there are now so many, but Ms. Garrett makes sure to tell me just when I need her too. This book had some really lovely moments and some real surprises to keep the reader guessing. The humour is a nice addition especially Casper and Gambit. Fast paced and intriguing to the end, this is another fascinating story from Reily Garrett.

This is the 5th book in the series and it can be read as a standalone however for best enjoyment I would recommend starting at the beginning. Detective Wade is searching for her sister when she meets Parker who is trying to track down those who are psychically talented. Why were they all drawn to the same place and who can they trust to keep all of them safe? Fast-paced read with plenty of drama and lots of twists and turns. Great characters and an entertaining story. I liked it.

Great additions to a great series! The teens might be my new favorites along with the doggies ;) They are such a great team. Each additional team member gives me hope they are close to take down the bad guys! I don’t want it to end, but they also get handed curve balls that extend their journey to solving their problems. I cannot wait for the next book ;) Silver is going to be a handful! I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.

But surprises are still coming and so many things are changing. You have trouble keeping up. Still fabulous story and can’t wait for next one.

This story was really good! The problem is ... now I need to read the books that came before it because the story feels incomplete otherwise! Lol! Good thing I can read them all with Kindle Unlimited. The suspense factor of this book is just right ... making me want to turn the page to find out what happens next.

I have KU so you know I will be going back to read the first four books soon. 😍
