Draws on the mythological stories of seven Greek goddesses to present a range of decorating ideas and themes designed to enhance a home, in a guide that demonstrates how to use symbols, forms, and rituals to promote feelings of warmth, sensuality, and serenity.
I have this fun habit of getting the most niche random books off the library shelves and having a read.
I honestly liked this book but felt that the interior design and room settings wasn’t timeless so found them pretty tacky.
The information about invoking the goddess and bringing them into your space was really fun though. And the tips on how to celebrate each space were nice too.
Would I recommend this book? No. Am I glad I picked it up? Hell yes
so many fun rooms in this book make it lovely to look at. i enjoyed the idea of goddess themes in a room...like aphrodite in the bedroom and bath, and then designing the room around that. full of suggestions, quotes from the famous "if some wizard would like to make me a present, let him give me a bottle filled with the voices of that kitchen..." Truman Capote as quoted in the kitchen section dedicated to Demeter. this books reminds the reader that everything we put in a room manipulates the atmosphere and effects anyone who enters, and that by paying attention to the subtle meaning behind simple objects we can create a home people are drawn to.
1.5 stars. I was excited for a book of design based on Greek goddesses, but it was so surface-level as to be useless. It basically just takes a handful of goddess correspondences and waxes fluffily about them. The biggest insult was glossing over the "ickier" aspects of the goddesses in order to maintain the faux inspirational aesthetic (Callisto was not "seduced" by Zeus, she was raped!). I gave the book more than 1 star because there was one image that had a great idea for decorating empty doorways. Otherwise, though, you're better off doing a quick search on the goddesses' correspondences and making up related decoration ideas yourself.
This is one of my favourite decorating books! Inspired by several Greek goddesses, this book has charming photographs and ideas that I love. I don't intimately relate to all of the goddesses, but each of them has an aspect I see reflected in myself and my home. I especially love the ideas for bringing Demeter's nurturing and harvest associations t my kitchen, Artemis's passion for nature and self hood to my den, and Hestia's warmth and comfort to my hearth. I love flipping through this book occasionally for inspiration.
It's a nice idea aligning interior design with Goddess-infused symbolic meaning. It is highly derivative of Goddesses in Every Woman and the interiors show a definite angle toward privilege and expanse, but it's a pleasant enough coffee table book...
I enjoyed learning about what things are associated with each goddess, and the book is illustrated with beautiful pictures. I picked it up at the library and it was a fun read.
I love the idea behind this book, but the execution was lackluster. The interiors all had a very similar look & feel, and the text read like filler. Disappointing.
