It all starts with a hum, a thrum, a bum bah dum dum.
Every year, the ultimate moth rave takes place in the mountains of West Virginia, unbeknownst to most people. To the community of mothpeople who do know about this moth pit, it's the best kept secret in the country.
For Erris, it's a burden.
With expectations of finding a mate, and Erris having little interest in romance, it's nothing but a tedious chore. Enter Sol, a friend from high school with social anxiety who also wishes for the party to be over. Between the two of them, they might just have a chance at getting their hassling parents off their wings, and as an added bonus, the local toxic pest, Ren. All they have to do is pretend to be together.
Easy enough, right? Except in spending time together, Erris and Sol realize something real might be there after all.
Moth Pit is a 15,000 word contemporary fantasy new adult novella, and features mothpeople, a nonbinary/male romance, fake dating, and a friends to lovers arc. Cryptid and mothman lovers are welcome and encouraged!
Amara Lynn has always been a quiet daydreamer. Coming up with characters and worlds since childhood, Amara eventually found an outlet in writing. Amara loves anything to do with pirates, villains and superheroes, angels and demons.
They were born and raised in the Midwest USA, where they remain stuck with their spouse and two cats. They love to write about soft monsters and cryptids, grumpy enbies, and forever will be weak for the grumpy one is soft for the sunshine one trope. When not writing, they are usually watching anime, playing games, and obsessing over their out of control music playlists.
This is a fun and sweet (sometimes steamy) romance with fake dating (one of my all time favorite tropes), on point nonbinary rep, and overall queer delightful-ness. The audiobook narrator has a very pleasant voice and added to my enjoyment of the story. Recommend this story to anyone who wants some own voices queer rep with their romance reads.
Moth Pit a charming novella by Amara Lynn for those looking for a steamy HEA that explores an enby relationship. The moth world, though given a brief glimpse, is complex and creative. Despite its paranormal premise, the characters can be plucked from any college campus in real life.
Truly the NBMC and MMC are absolutely in their early twenties. Lynn nails the awkwardness and immaturity of that age perfectly. I think I needed more shepherding on the author’s part to better understand some of the motivations of our main couple. The NBMC seriously does not like Ren. Later in the story, I absolutely get it. However, at the top of the story there’s little hint of that antagonism on Ren’s part. So the NBMC and MMC somehow come across as flippant and rude even though later we learn that’s not really what’s happening.
I think Ren could have been used for so much more. He’s a haunting presence for the NBMC and perhaps that can mean something almost symbolic for their character development as they accept and embrace their feelings for Sol.
Overall though, I enjoyed the world Lynn created and think this novella is a cute, light thing to read.
This is a short book, but totally worth the read. It’s a sweet tale of a mothmx not looking for love but wanting everting off their back about it. I read it all in one afternoon, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I’d finished an especially violent Stephen King book this morning, so reading Moth Pit put my mind right again. Five stars!
Amara! Another super cute story about people finding people that love them for them! I appreciate your writing and books! Thank you for being all inclusive and having different books for different types of people! I love your style!
If you looking for something fun, drama-free and sweet, this little novella can give you a friends-to-lovers romance between two mothpeople. And as a plus, it has some quirky worldbuilding with lamps.
I received an advanced reading copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.
