DC heart surgeon Dr. Steven Leeds is suddenly besieged by a handful of immensely complicated heart attack and stroke cases, all caused by a rare arterial injury―a dissection. And all the victims have first received innocuous-looking cards announcing: “Your heart attack/stroke will arrive within one hour!”

Private detective Kirk Miner and FBI agent Jack Mulville investigate, and they immediately suspect Leeds' former lover, Dr. Silvana Moretti, a brilliant research scientist who harbors a grudge against all the victims. Then when prominent people in the U.S. government begin to receive these same threatening cards and almost immediately experience these same deadly cardiac emergencies, it falls to the unlikely team of three―the headstrong FBI agent, the gifted private investigator, and the brilliant but conflicted heart surgeon―to find the actual perpetrators and to snuff out a catastrophic plot that only the medically astute can divine.

Dr. Cristina LePort's story is vaguely reminiscent of the artfully nightmarish scenarios in Vince Flynn's Mitch Rapp novels, combined with the fast-paced tempo of Robin Cook's medical thrillers. Her Dissection features page-turning suspense, action-packed climaxes, and thoughtful character development, set against a believable backdrop of medical science informed by her long career as a cardiologist. Her style, though accessible, is more sophisticated than superficial, and, with strong protagonists on both sides of the gender divide, appeals to both male and female readers.

The operating room of Dr. Steven Leeds is suddenly full of terribly complicated, unusual heart and stroke patients, each caused by a dissection. A dissection is a “serious condition in which a tear occurs in the inner layer of the body’s main artery (aorta). Blood rushes through the tear, causing the inner and middle layers to split (dissect). If the blood goes through the aortic wall, aortic dissection is often deadly.” (MayoClinic.org) All of the victims received a plain brown card/handwritten note prior to with the words, “Your heart attack/stroke will arrive within the hour.” When FBI Agent Jack Mulville and P.I. Kirk Miner are assigned the case, they immediately name Dr. Leeds’ former girlfriend, Dr. Silvana Moretti, as the prime suspect. To date, all of the victims of the seemingly induced dissections were opponents to FDA approval for Dr. Moretti’s device to predict heart attack/stroke and its severity. Since the technology was developed by Moretti, she has both motive and means—but something doesn’t add up and it leaves the investigators in doubt. Prominent Washington D.C. officials are also presenting with dissections after receiving some form of communication with the same message. With Dr. Moretti under arrest, Mulville, Miner, and a very reluctant Dr. Leeds must work together to solve this puzzle—before it’s too late to save anyone.

What if someone had the power—absolute power—to cause major arterial injuries and catastrophic amounts of severely wounded victims and countless deaths, and what if this earth-shattering technology fell into the hands of someone wishing to harm our country? “Dissection” is a terrifying medical thriller that is not only frightening on paper, but truly blood-curdling to think about in a real-world application. It is a tense, tautly written, descriptive, electrifying, and formidable novel that makes you think, and most of all makes you feel every single thing that is happening as it occurs. I read this work like someone thirsting for water after days in the desert sun—voraciously ingesting the pages as quickly as I could to reach the stunning climax and marvelous ending. I cannot recommend Dr. Cristina LePort’s expertly written novel highly enough to all fans of medical and psychological thriller. It’s a compelling, page-turning, exceptional book that will leave you breathless—both in written word and emotionally.

I’d like to thank ReedsyDiscovery, Dr. Cristina LePort, and Bancroft Press for the ability to read and review this ARC.

In the minority here. I decided to stop 46% in because the plot was turning toward international terrorism/espionage, which isn't my type of genre.

That being said, I nearly stopped many pages ago when I read the following sentences, "Silvana shuffled into the room under the control of a female guard. Not even the vulgar orange jumpsuit and the clanging cuffs could hide her passionate sensuality." Huge eye roll. And Silvana was not the last woman to be primarily described as, 'attractive, despite the horror she was going through'. Also not a fan of the FBI agent whose descriptions make it seem as if he crawled out of a cave with a club.

A prominent ER doctor receives a simple tan card. Inside it, there’s a warning, and within an hour he suffers a major heart attack due to dissection of the arteries. It seems like a rare, complicated case, until it happens again - and stroke victims as well. All patients (or victims) report having opened a plain tan card warning them of their impending medical attack.

As the FBI is called in to investigate, eyes are turned toward Dr. Silvana Moretti, a biophysicist who invented a device able to predict heart and strokes. She is motivated to seek revenge against some doctors and the FDA, who rejected her device's approval. But when government officials become the cards' next target, it becomes clear something much larger and far more sinister is at play.

This starts as a chilling medical thriller and then propels into a terrifying political nightmare as it demonstrates just how vulnerable we would be if a medical device were used as a weapon. As the author is a physician, the medical details are fine-tuned and precise. Yet she also does a stellar job of keeping the suspense alive. 𝘈 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘵-𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘥𝘦𝘣𝘶𝘵!

Dissection by Cristina Leport is a debut medical thriller that was well written and fast paced.

People are reporting to the Emergency Room with cardiology related dissections with no other health problems. There is foul play involved.

I enjoyed the characters, namely Dr Moretti, who had created a device that could predict early stages of problems in the arteries. He becomes a suspect.

I found the story to be exciting. Seemed to be a little Sci-Fi element that surprised me.

Fast paced and well written, I look forward to seeing what the author writes next.

TITLE: Dissection
AUTHOR: Dr. Cristina Leport
PUB DATE: 10.18.2022

Suspenseful
Gripping
Brilliant

There was a shift I had in the Emergency Department not too long ago when every paramedic run was either a STEMI (heart attack), a stroke, or an aortic dissection. I was telling someone, what is in the water today? Then this book came in the mail and I was blown away!

Reading Dr Leport’s exciting and gripping debut Dissection reminded me of that day, except all the victims in this thriller have first received innocuous-looking cards announcing: “Your heart attack or stroke will arrive within one hour!” The story went from fast to faster and how I enjoyed this medical thriller so much! I loved the trio of characters solving this terrifying plot - from heart surgeon Dr Leeds, brilliant detective Kirk Miner, with FBI agent Jack Mulville. This phenomenal book had everything - there was a bit of romance to cutting edge medical science, that only a practicing cardiologist deftly writes.

Check out this exciting medical thriller I enjoyed!

Doctors and medical students learn that dissection is an important part of learning the internal structures of animals and how tissues and organs are related. Imagine if a device a chip could be used to detect whether you were going to have a stroke or heart attack . Each of the victims you will meet have one thing in common, they received a card announcing that “ Your heart attack will arrive within one hour ! “ Just before their attack. The cause and the catalyst behind the attacks and how and why they happened is the work of Dr. Silvana Moretti a brilliant research scientist. The reason harboring a grudge against all the victims. But something about her demeanor and the way she admits what she’s done bothers Steve Leeds and her and PI Miner form an alliance to find out the truth.
Silvan a is a biophysicist and very smart. But when the CEO of the hospital received a card stating his heart attack will arrive in one hour what is set in motion is shocking. Added in the first attack of Dr. Nirula the doctor responsible for the death of Silvana’s brother, because the chip created by her caused the attacks but how? It hit the CEO’s daughter too affected because she touched the chip. Coronary dissections, coronoid dissections and aortic would be next. She is an expert in ultrasound and her device detects arterial injuries and measures the frequency of vibrations. Healthy arteries vibrate at certain frequencies but with inflammation the vibrations change. The purpose of her device is to detect early inflammation of arteries and predicts imminent heart attack or strokes. She continues to elaborate as to how the device might have saved her brother, but the hospital would not use it not FDA approved.
Events escalated and Dr. Leeds joins forces with Miner to uncover who sent the cards, learn more about the death of the Chief of Staff of the body and why so many in the FDA team are targets including Miner. Three types of dissections each that could terminate a life, but some were saved but not all. Why was Silvana taking the hit and where is her daughter ?

The conspiracy is within the government as a young child helps to uncover a secret that surrounds his father’s murder. A kidnapping and a letter and an email that set it in motion as the Chief of staff had to pick the designated survivor in case something happens to the president and the Vice President plus those in the order of succession. Why the choice and why kill him? Was it to stop him from telling?
Miner and the FBI agent form alliance but Miner wants to be on the security detail to protect this person and Silvana holds the key but a doctor the solution. We learn about her daughter and that she’s been taken as we meet the terrorists and hope to uncover more. Author Dr.LePort created a spine-tingling frightening plot that is filled with heart attack, strokes and aortic dissections and more. International fear, constitutional deception, emergency medical horrors and political intrigue and catastrophic events with dire consequences.
Kirk and Mulville had to decide how to proceed and where the football or the biscuit that was needed to run the code and stop a nuclear war was. Which Secretary would now be the designated survivor now that the one that was picked died. The President, Vice President and those in the line of succession were practically all gone and who would they be up to? The Secretary of Energy’s first alliance was where? Mulville had to explain and convince the director of the gravity of the situation and take away the privilege to be the designated survivor for the first time. He did not take it seriously and did not realize how many would die if something was not done and Moretti was not able to use her desire to save lives even though she was in jail. Then Miner goes undercover but will he have backup and just how will he survive? Lives are at stake, bodies will fall, the terrorists need to be stopped but in the end what Miner learns from Dr. Emerson and what exactly her and Silvana were created will shock you. He needed to create a foam that would help him and keep him from the frequency the foal blocks depend on the size of the bubble. How they manage to do his is a wonder and how the author created this shield to protect him a medical wonder. Just where is her daughter, will she finally work with Mulville and the rest of the team including she blamed for her brother’s death?
Lives are at stake. A nuclear war is imminent and the only ones that could stop it are the newly at least for a while President, Mulville as acting FBI director, Miner is he survives and Silvana if she can use her devise to save lives. Will she?
The real drama occurs when the meeting beings, The deputy Sergeant of Arms addressed the Hose speaker announce the VP and members of the senator who entered. But what happens next is horrifying, the pilot had addressed Kirk directly and we realize he was part of the plot and the speaker waiting until the noise died down and introduced the President. But a recording enter the mix and it sates Your aortic dissection will occur in one hour. Is this true and if so how can it be stopped? How would they get Silvana to be on their team and help using her device to save lives?
Where is the nuclear football and how will they locate it? When she tells the truth you won’t believe how the terrorists bot her ID card and go to her instruments the night to program the devices and they researched her brother’s case and made it seem as if she was sending the tan cards. Her device she states could help the exposure can be different depending on the angle of the probe. Her invention is to detect arterial injury and can help to tell who is at immediate risk of rupture and needs immediate surgery or who can wait.
Chapter 30 is scary as there are many who wind up needed Aortic dissections but how many can be save and what caused it? Just who was presenting to be FBI and who was corrupt on the team? The final scenes are terrifying, the lives that are at stake are those in high government positions and more than hundreds of others. But some will die because staff was limited, and they could only do so much. Kirk gets seriously ill, this operation was deadly and dealing with Iran who started the attacks, and the retaliation was terrifying.
Kirk was terrified and how would they stop the unleashing America’s nuclear missile, and he now held the biscuit.
With the help of a young hopeful agent named Bloom, Miner, Mulville and a team of people they hoped to find a way Miner, Mulville and a team of people they hoped to find a way to search the President’s clothes to find the information to decipher the code or the world would end as we know it. Will the power of our military win? What happens when the President of the US and Iran go at it on the phone which side wins? An ending that will leave you wondering if the device saved the patients, did they stop the nuclear war and what is next for Mulville, and Miner will they meet again? What about Silvana will she do time? Some endings are tragic as this one is while in some respects new beginnings. Characters that are tough, interesting, persistent in completing their goals and you must love both Miner and Mulville and you decide about Silvana and Leeds.
A little boy named Jeff who might have saved the day and a son to Kirk named Peter that is precious but remember this and don’ t forgets: Do not open any tan cards. Do not touch them with your bare hands? Make sure you give it to the police or FBI : Do not touch the tan card and if you receive a message that says: Your heart attack or stroke will arrive in an hour: Don’t touch it or your DISSECTION will be next.

Wow, what a debut! I rate this one right up there with Robin Cooks COMA in the medical thriller genre.
When people start showing up at the emergency room with aorta and carotid artery dissections with no history of health problems, it soon becomes apparent that some exterior force is to blame.
Dr Moretti, a pioneer in early detection of artery problems he's created a device that if approved by the FDA could possibly save lives, including the life of her brother who died after being denied the use of the device. The device uses ultrasonic wavelengths to detect problems, those wavelengths when altered can cause the problems the device is meant to detect. Could Dr Moretti be responsible for the deaths and near death experiences of those connected to the rejection of her device? When she is arrested her ex, Dr Steven Leeds knows there's something amiss. The women he knows would never do what they're accusing her of but now the FBI is involved and they're convinced they have their culprit. Could someone have hijacked Dr Moretti's research though? What follows is a supercharged, high speed race to find what's going on and when the stakes are raised when powerful DC politicians are targeted the race just might be to stop WWIII.

When I picked this one up I had every intention to just read for a couple hours and then move on to other pressing matters, little did I know that would lead to my missing dinner, miss watching my favorite shows and then staying up all night to finish this terrific novel. I couldn't put it down! This one is smart and fast paced using the medical expertise of the author combined with political intrigue and a touch of romance to create a well balanced story. I loved every page and am confident in saying so will you!

A huge thank you to the author, Bancroft Press and Suzy Approved Book Tours for the gifted copy and including me on this tour.

The book's blurb summarizes:

"DC heart surgeon Dr. Steven Leeds is suddenly besieged by a handful of immensely complicated heart attack and stroke cases, all caused by a rare arterial injury—a dissection. And all the victims have first received innocuous-looking cards announcing: “Your heart attack/stroke will arrive within one hour!”

I enjoyed the book although there are farfetched aspects that defied belief. My guess is that if an enemy hated the United States so much that they wanted to harm or destroy it, they would bypass the type of scenario outlined in the story.

On the other hand, that wouldn't make for an interesting or sustained plotline.

I liked the characters of the 'good guys' and some of their roles remain open ended, so I guess that there may be a sequel. 3.5 Stars.

Told from multiple POVs, Dissection is a fast paced thriller with medical and political overtones. When one of the doctors receives a tan card in his mail telling him that his heart attack will arrive in one hour, he doesn’t think much of it, until he starts to experience cardiac arrest. When others receive cards as well, the FBI and a PI get involved and believe they’ve caught their criminal, Silvana Moretti. But all is not as it seems, and Moretti appears to be nothing but a pawn. Will the FBI find the true masterminds in time?

This was a very interesting story right from the start. I loved that we jumped straight into the action. My favorite part of the story was definitely near the end when all of the action is taking place. I think this could make an amazing movie! I also enjoyed learning more about how heart attacks etc work and how the government handles the designated survivor. Overall, this is a great book if you want a lot of action and to learn some new things!

Despite high praise from authors whose books I have enjoyed, this medical thriller was quite disappointing. I have taken note of those who wrote those blurbs...

The premise - a new invention is capable of transmitting sound waves via programmed chips that induce heart attack, stroke, and aortic dissection. The science (?) has come under control of bad actors from Iran and many people in high positions of government receive notes that warn them of an immediate health crisis. When they experience the deadly emergency and mostly die, there are only a handful of people who know what is happening and how to save the world from impending doom.

OK, this was just not believable in any way even though it was written by a doctor. It veers between the medical and the political and both angles don't ring true. The characters were stereotypes, and the insipid romance aspect was another predictable but absurd component of the story. It went on far too long and the writing was such that it was obvious this was a debut.

I am a medical thriller addict and did not find the science or suspense that I anticipated. I was not able to get an ARC, so ordered it from the local library.

Not recommended.

The tag line on the cover says a medical and political thriller and this book does not disappoint in either department.

DISSECTION begins in what feels like a medical thriller with a brilliant scientist getting revenge, but this book quickly moves into a political thriller as members of the US government are being manipulated and dying.

My favorite part of this book is that there is not one main character but a group of three men, a doctor, an FBI agent and a NYC PI who form an alliance to find out who is the mastermind and what their end game is.

I also felt like the weapon of choice, the use of wavelengths to cause dissection- a rare medical phenomenon, felt like something that could really happen.

The writing is excellent and the progression of the story flows at a good pace. I also liked the layers involved and how they unfold during the book. The medical explanations were easy for a non medical person like myself to understand.

We had the pleasure of Dr. LePort attending our neighborhood book club. She was so wonderful answering our questions and telling us about her Dissection book. We were interested to hear about the path of her writing and the publication of the book.
Our group enjoyed the book so much as it is fast paced, suspenseful, and has well developed characters and dialogue. The medical science throughout the book is told in an understanding way for everyone which is enhanced by Dr. LePort’s cardiology profession. As well as being a medical thriller there is an international terrorism plot.
The book makes you think of politics in our current world and the possibilities of beneficial and detrimental medical devices that can impact our lives. I highly recommend this exciting book. Set time aside to read it as you will not want to put it down. I am happy to know that everyone can look forward to a sequel.

One and a half stars.

Doctors make for poor fiction writers. There, I said it. This not being the first experience (and each one being terrible) it is safely to conclude that doctors should do what they know best-and that is treating patients.

The concept of inducing carotid/aortic dissection through soundwaves is nothing if not a novel concept. The execution- a hackneyed attempt made by copy pasting concepts from 'how to write a thriller' and '101 ways to make a suspense tv show'. Also, I had to google the author and confirm that she's female, on account of the oodles of male gaze. Its like someone told her that you had to focus on the female characters' body parts, or you won't get enough readership.

I am wavering on the number of stars. The writing kept me going, and for the most part the pacing did as well. The medical thriller part earns 5 stars; it was just great.

The terrorist angle didn't do it for me. It was kind of 24 X Homeland and upped a bit on top of that. The usual suspects part blew it for me, and while many might think the medical device aspect was implausible, the terrorist part is what was implausible for me. The reason I said the pacing for the most part was fine...her pacing with her writing was great. The pacing of events was so implausible I couldn't quite ignore it when I rated it.

Save the World!

Wow! Hope in the midst of hopelessness along with rhetoric development of deep compassion and friendship between a grouchy FBI agent and a private investigator hired to be his sidekick during an investigation that is dissecting people’s hearts with sound waves. The USA faces the possibility of world war 3 on the night of the state of the union address. Lots of twists and turns with the appt of a designated survivor for the supreme commander and then finding an acting president during the whole saga.
This one was read straight through the night! Not one to put down until the very last word!

An interesting premise, a person receives a note reading "Your heart attack/stroke will arrive in one hour" and guess what...they start to have a heart attack or stroke! A DC surgeon notices a sudden influx of extremely complicated cases caused by a rare arterial injury, a dissection. Top US leaders are targeted, FBI is involved, possible terrorists are involved, with difficult morality issues create a suspenseful thriller. It was a good book, a debut by a local cardiologist, but at times the writing was not the best. 4 stars for the story, but 2 for the writing...

I almost didn’t finish this book. The only reason I did finish was because I was curious just how bad the book would continue to be and how it would end. It’s an interesting idea and some of the story was exciting, but when it transitioned to absurd clichés about terrorists and infidels, I felt offended and disappointed that I had dedicated so much of my life to reading such trash. I will be more careful about reading books that are immediately available from the library and that appear on a random list of “good” books.

A taut, action-packed story! I feel like this would make a great movie.

A doctor gets a tan card that simply says “your heart attack will arrive within the hour.” Then he gets the heart attack. Why did it happen? Can someone somehow create the heart attack??

This was such an interesting story and I loved all the medical info. Definitely learned something! Thanks for the gifted book from Suzy approved book tours and the author.

I absolutely love medical thrillers and this is the best one I’ve ever read! I love the cover, the plot was original and creative, the characters so well-developed, and very well written. This book gave me Grey’s Anatomy X West Wing vibes. As a medical and political thriller, it kept me the edge of my seat until the end-I read it in two days. With Dr. LePort's medical background, I loved getting to learn more about the body and heart. The book was so unique and creative, but also realistic. It’s crazy to think that technology that is meant for the greater good, could be used as a terrorist weapon. Action pack and heart racing.

I love a good thriller and the medical angle to this one was an added bonus.  It is considered a medical & political thriller which is the perfect description.  It was fascinating and somewhat terrifying and I was on the edge of my seat throughout.  The character development was great and there were some really interesting characters.  Although "unputdownable" isn't actually a word, it's what best describes this awesome read for me.

Dissection is a fantastic debut novel by author Dr. Cristina LePort. The first chapter hooks readers and draws them into this fast-paced medical thriller. LePort drew on her background as a cardiologist to conceive an original and chilling premise for the book. Yet, the medical information and terminology was easy to understand.

Overall, the story line and characters were well developed. A captivating read. I highly recommend and will look for more from this author.

The author spoke at our writer's club meeting. She was pretty amusing! She's a doctor with a sense of humor, so you know she got all the medical details right.
I thought it was just going to be a medical mystery, hospital intrigue or whatever, but this quickly escalates into a (somewhat gory) action-packed disaster with global possibilities for the fallout if the hero can't save the day!
