When Josh meets Eliza, he’s riding a grudge. She’s the nefarious bank executive foreclosing on his sick neighbor’s property and he’s there to set the matter straight. Cold-hearted bankers can’t just take away a man’s livelihood because he missed a payment or two.
Eliza is stunned when Josh confronts her. She tries to explain the situation from her end, but he’s having none of it. Finally she placates him–she’ll review everything and see if the bank can extend the loan period.
Not good enough. Josh wants her to meet with the rancher and see the ranch. Yet it’s not only the man’s ranch he takes her to, but his own. Over the next few weeks the discussion doesn’t only center on the foreclosure, but on how to make things work–maybe even between them.
Until the fateful day Josh slams back into her office accusing her of foreclosing after promising to extend the loan. Eliza did no such thing, but convincing Josh of that is almost impossible.
If he can’t believe her, then all the closeness she thought they had growing between them was nothing but will o’the wisp. How can it ever be made right?

TRUST, ONCE LOST, WAS DIFFICULT IF NOT IMPOSSIBLE TO REGAIN
The story is a clean contemporary western with a great cast of characters. The town of Wildcat Creek is smaller, with people knowing each other, and comprises of many ranching families. The story’s two main characters are rancher Josh Sterling and bank loan officer Eliza Canfield. From the time these two met, there is animosity between them. They judge one another based on past experiences and people. It is unfair and leads to plenty of problems.
The story’s plot will have Josh storming into the office of E. Canfield, only to learn it is a woman, Eliza. He is angry when he discovers all the letters sent to the ailing neighboring rancher, Victor Holmes. He throws out accusations about her unscrupulous attempt to foreclose on Victor and refuses to listen to her. He demands she come to the ranch and speak to Victor in person and refuses to take no for an answer. There is this angry attraction between Josh and Eliza. Neither wants anything with the other, but like a train wreck, they can’t avoid the chemistry. He keeps comparing her to his career-minded late wife, Margaret, and she sees him as a charmer to get what he wants. But in spite of it all, they can’t deny the attraction—which leads to lots of kissing.
Eliza: This isn’t very businesslike. Josh: This isn’t business. Eliza: The visit is business. Josh: No, it’s an exploration.
Eliza: Sometimes I don’t like you. Josh: Could have fooled me in the barn. Eliza: That’s sex. I’m attracted to you, I admit that. But I don’t have to do anything about it. Josh: Because you don’t like me. And why not? Because I threaten your secure little world? Let’s get one thing cleared up. I don’t want you to fall in love with me, I want you to sleep with me. There’s a big difference. I’m not into happy-ever-after. I tried it once, and it blew up in my face, and I won’t do it again.
As someone who has read all the stories in this series and enjoyed them. I didn’t have warm fuzzy feelings about Josh. It seemed that every time I thought he was improving, he proved he could be a jerk. He kept belittling Eliza for her career and position—comparing her to Margaret. Eliza eventually tells him about her late father and how she is cautious about men like him—and feels like Josh is lackadaisical in many ways. While the story does have a resolution, it was a day late and a dollar short in winning me over to team Josh-Eliza.
Sometimes our hurt from the past stays with us and we paint others in the same light. This is what happened with Josh and Eliza. Eliza had worked hard to get promotions at the bank she worked at. It wasn’t any easy job because of male points of view. I can’t imagine Eliza’s childhood, but it was what made her the woman she was. She was shocked when Josh came blowing in her office at the bank and blasted her for beginning the procedures to foreclose on his good friends ranch. Unfortunately Josh had a bad experience with his ex wife who wanted to further her career instead of living with a cowboy. The funny thing was they were both attracted to each other, but they still had conflicts about the other. Some of the adventures they went through were very interesting which made there relationship so much better. I enjoyed the book and encourage you to read it. I was given a copy and voluntarily wrote a review.
This is a fantastic, page turning story. The chemistry is there from the first meeting of Eliza and Josh, but he is not very happy about her being a career woman. She gets the impression that he is not a very hard worker. They seem to be opposites but there is definitely an attraction. Can they work out their differences? Great characters and a wonderful, must read story! I received an advance copy of book from the author, however, I voluntarily wrote an honest review. All opinions are strictly my own.
“A Cowboy for Eliza” Cowboys of Wildcat Creek, Book 5 by Barbara McMahon 2 Histories Collide Ah, yes, one’s personal history certainly does color one’s view of their world. IF you feel the emotions in a story you will most likely shed some tears, but there are plenty of smiles and maybe a few chuckles to cheer your day. This is a sweet clean romance and I certainly did enjoy my time within its pages. Happy Reading ! ! NOTE: This review expresses my honest opinion. I received an ARC of this story from the author via Bookfunnel.
