Combat Healer is a full-length novel (101,000 words)
Allister is a combat healer, and a good one at that, capable of healing that which others cannot. In fact, he might even be the best in the entire kingdom. However, he didn't become so powerful by sheer luck or coincidence.
Hiding a dark past full of horrors and torment, his already dangerous lifestyle as a Scourge Suppressor is about to become even more perilous. Thankfully, there is one glimmer of light breaking through the darkness.
What was once lost, will be found again.
And that which is found, will never again be taken from him, so long as he draws breath.
He won’t allow it.
- NOTE: This story is 18+ for strong language, mild violence, and adult themes including detailed erotic scenes.
I actually like Kaizerwolf’s (KW) writing style and have read his IDH series as a web novel, but there are a few consistent literary items that I really wish he would change up in his story writing and they are definitely exemplified in Combat Healer:
1. KW does a great job of getting into the story from the character’s perspective, but I sometimes feel he loses sight of the READER’s perspective. His writing is in first person and he tends to switch character views at times which is fine, but it can get annoying when rereading the same thing just because he hasn’t explained something from that character’s POV yet (ex. Explaining how ‘shit collectors’ sell to tanners and how the economics of the transaction work both from the Holstaur’s and Allister’s POV), when it’s been said once, your reader doesn’t need to reread the same explanation from another POV. It’s boring and unnecessary.
2. The character’s thoughts and internal monologue/observations are great, but I wish he would present them to the reader using better literary devices like inserting these into his character’s dialogue to give the reader the necessary information indirectly. Rather than constantly narrating, I think this could not only help him cut back on constantly talking to the reader, but allow the reader to better immerse into the story. Don’t tell me what’s happening, let the character’s SHOW me what’s happening.
3. Somewhat related to #2, sometimes there is of course no better way to explain something than to simply narrate to the reader, but I Hate when he inserts the narration right in the middle of some interesting character dialogue. By the time he’s done explaining everything, I’ve totally lost track of the conversation they were having and need to go back and reread what they were saying to follow the continuing dialogue thread.
There can be quite a bit of cringey dialogue that I wish he’d stop with too, but most of that I can generally overlook for a good story, I think the above of the more critical improvements that could really elevate KW’s storytelling to the next level.
Currently only partway through the book, I just wanted to get these thoughts down while I run into them for now and will come back to this review when I finish.
The book definitely seems to have been written by 2 authors with distinctly different writing styles.
The first 10-12% is written as the intro to a half decent action/fantasy type story about a combat healer. It fleshes out characters, describes their personalities and set up a decent premise to a story.
The next part of the story, introducing Mel, skips pretty much anything associated with character development and instead skips straight to being in a relationship (which by other authors in the genre would take numerous books). Why was she after the best healer? Don't know. It was stated she was but that arc never got resolved.
The rest is largely forgettable to the extent that it seems to mostly lurch from one partner to the next with minimal story progression.
Perhaps writing a story and embellishing with relations would be preferable to writing smut about elves and having to shoehorn a story in for good measure.
I tend to avoid harem type books, because I find that in general, the focus is on the harem, instead on the story that is being told. I picked up this book for free, not knowing it was a harem type story, and even thought to abandon it when I was only a couple chapters in, but the story was interesting, and I wanted to see how it turned out. It took me several weeks, but since my Kindle Unlimited subscription is inactive, and I needed something LitRPG related to read, I figured I'd finish up this one just to get it off my reading list. As it turns out, Yes, the harem aspects do get in the way of the story, but for the most part, it's possible to ignore them to some degree. Regardless, if there are more in the series, I won't be reading them, even though I'd like to see the sisters fight the critters they've set out to kill, and we never did get a look at how the queen fights, nor most of the other females in the story come to think of it, so while it might be interesting to see how that all turns out, I'm not interested in wading through multiple pages of harem descriptions just to get to the real story, so this is as far as I go in this series. However, if you like that sort of thing, then by all means, grab yourself a copy, and have at it, it's probably going to be a very interesting series, especially for those who enjoy harem aspects in their stories.
53% and I just couldn't continue reading. Honestly its a shame too because I think the author writes well. My opinion though is the entire story is over sexualized. It felt like the author was struggling between writing "smut" and an actual storyline. You can see it when the MC talks about his experiences, trials and tribulations. Then the maturity level completely nose dives like he's just hitting puberty and his brain shuts off and not in a good way. There's no intelligence, sophistication or real passion here. Its all hormones and awkward, even in how the characters in mass interact and vocalize.
If the author ever wrote a story without the sex I'd probably give it a try because I really do think they have a decent style. Unfortunately I personally just don't think writing romance is their thing.
I have to preface this by saying I am a fan of this author as I love the Immortal Supers series, so I'm probably too forgiving. That being said this book seems like only half a novel. Characters were introduced and brought together and then a problem appears but we never get there. IMO too many characters were introduced and too rapidly to have time for anything else. I do have high hopes for the second volume as now that is out of the way. I do like all the female characters, and I especially like the backstory for Allie and Eliza. MC is initially pathetically desperate and we get some pretty cringe encounters because of this and even though the reasoning behind his situation is explained, it still seems a bit too masochistic. Of course, we know his cup will soon runneth over. I am just happy that I don't have to wait on second volume at this point.
The story overall is excellent. The characters are interesting, and it is easy to see how this could be an amazing world to spend time in. The MC has some amazing abilities, seems fairly intelligent and is the most frustrating type of character who in most ways is fascinating, except he is so many kinds of milk toast it is frustrating. Nothing happens by his own initiative, nothing outside of studying and having bouts of inspiration to spontaneously create unheard of healing spells. I look forward to next book, in hopes that MC will grow up some.
A most excellently told tale so far. It's also refreshing to have a healer as the primary protagonist. Normally I'd say there was to much genre space taken up by the character stat sheets. But in this case the protagonist can see others so that is different and a much better justification of the space. Also they are not excessively long. So unlike some books in this genre you get you money's worth of story. Kudo's to Kaizer and I'm eagerly awaiting the next volume.
The story starts off like a generic high fantasy novel... but it's a trick! Surprises add up in the plot as quickly as the MC's fortunes with the ladies change. And all of the women in the MC's life are bad-ass in their own right, which makes things a lot of fun. Yes it's adult, and the MC end the book with multiple consensual partners. Five stars.
So enjoy this book. Quit a change from beginning to end.. The MC is begging for a date by the end more than you can shake a stick at. Lol. Harem of course. That said the book is well written the MC is an overpowered healer with very few of offensive abilities but enough to stay alive. The MC has secrets of course and there is a very interesting twist in the book that is quite enjoyable. Hopefully the second book will answer even more questions about said twists.
If your looking for a Litrpg this isn't it. Has a few minor aspects but not enough to sink your teeth into it. What it needs is a little more action. The erotica is creative which is a plus, not the stagnant style most authors use in a harem book. I liked the MC, intelligent and willing to throw himself into the mix. He's not the strong alpha I prefer, but that's just my taste. All in all, don't expect a work of art, just sit back and enjoy.
As a teen gets trapped in a dungeon whi!e trying to help a young elf, learns to survive and heal well. Years after leving the dungeon and separated from elf girl, he teamed up with other and gets a name for himself as the top healer. Not a bad story to read, awaiting next book in series.
Because I enjoyed the book. Now at first I wasn't sure I was going to like this book But as I got further into the book I really got in to the story was not sure about the characters relationships at fist but they started to get better further in over all good book
Read as a pair with Fourth Wing, checking in on both male and female with fulfillment. I couldn't finish this one; it wasn't the sex, which was actually relatively limited (less ogling of the romantic interests than Fourth Wing). What killed me was the constant chatter about skills - it's the aesthetics of an RPG without the balance or other engaging parts.
I'm definitely not the target audience, but even with that out of the way, this book just wasn't good. The rules of the RPG really didn't make sense, the relationships didn't feel natural, the whole book took place in one day (which adds to the unnatural relationship feeling), plot progress really wasn't made, and the book ended before getting to a single action sequence. Just. No.
Have to be truthful. This is an Erotica, of the harem variety, with Litrpg elements.
I'm not familiar with Kaizer Wolf's work, but there is a lot of telling and not enough showing in this book. The writing itself seems very juvenile and the characters are lacking in any kind of maturity. This is a difficult read, even for the open minded.
I enjoyed this book cover to cover. The story pace was amazing I feel like I understand the characters and I feel like I want to know more, this has been a fun read and I look forward to reading more. Thanks for your hard work.
It started off promising, but kind of devolved into a MC mary sue with all and everyone trying to jump him. I believe this could have been executed a lot better if the focus was more on actual plot than hard to believe sex scenes.
From the beginning to the end this book was a very fun read. At the end there was enough buildup to hope this author should continue to keep the plot line and story lines going to hopefully have a happy ending for all characters.
Another home run from Kaizer. Can't wait for #2 to come out. Will definitely be picking up Combat Healer #2 and anything else that comes out from this author.
Before you say it, yes I didn't give this novel a fair go. In my defense all books need to, at the bare minimum, have prose that doesn't make me feel like I'm correcting high-school essays. This novel is just too childish, clearly written by an inexperienced author. Mr. Kaizer Wolf, the only advice I can give you is this: put down the pen for a little while and consume as much highly renowned literature as possible, then come back and try to emulate their style. We all stand on the shoulders of giants, you just need to choose yours.
This was my first Men's literotica story and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Storyline and progression were pretty good, character building, and the fantasy aspect was great. I genuinely wanted to see a second book in this series to see how it continued. I will say some lines were pretty cheesy and predictable but, all and all was a good read.
