A “tense and twisty” Earphones Award winner (Karen Dionne) that Library Journal recommends for “fans of Paula Hawkins and Clare Mackintosh”: When Kay wakes up with amnesia after surviving a brutal car crash, there is no one to verify her identity — and everyone around her seems to be hiding something… “Bravo to this psychological thriller and its sensational cast” (AudioFile).

Haunted by a forgotten past. Hunted by a ruthless killer. No one to save her but herself.

After surviving a car crash, Kay Smith wakes from a coma with amnesia, a battered face, and no one to vouch for her identity. Her psychiatrist is convinced that her memory loss is connected to the horrific flashbacks and nightmares haunting her. As she digs for clues to her past, Kay uncovers a shady character following her every inquiry. Who is he? And what does he want from her?

As Kay’s probes deepen, she realizes that everyone around her has deadly secrets to hide—even her. Emerging memories, guilty suspicions, and headline-screaming murders push Kay to come out of the shadows and choose: will she perpetuate a horrendous lie or risk her life to uncover the truth?

Since you're reading my bio, it’s likely you and I have one big thing in common. We love mysteries, we're passionate about murder, suspense, and thrills in the stories we read—to be more precise, the books we devour. Because that is what it is like to have a really good crime novel in front us. We pour through it until we're stuffed, forced to put it down until, sometime later, we're hungry again and can't fight our craving to read more.

I grew up reading mysteries I pulled off my mother's vast shelves of books—Agatha Christie, P.D. James, and others. Sunday was mystery night, whether it was watching Columbo or MacMillan and Wife on The NBC Sunday Mystery Movie or listening to The CBS Radio Mystery Theater. I fell under Sherlock Holmes's spell, fascinated by his keen abilities of observation and deduction to identify a murderer, his or her motive, and weapon of choice.

After years of enjoying Sara Paretsky, Sue Grafton, Lisa Scottline, Mary Higgins Clark, and other favorite authors, I finally set about writing my own crime novel and attended my first mystery writers conference. It took years of learning, writing, and rewriting to get publishing offers. I signed with CamCat Books in September 2022. We chose a new title, "Lest She Forget," and a cover design. Now, my debut thriller is ready for you to read, so we're up-to-date on my bio.

I won this book in a Goodreads Giveaway. I really liked this book. A different Story plot for sure. A very good thriller/suspense novel. A woman has amnesia after a terrible career accident. She goes by the name "Kay Smith" but she's sure that's not her name. She was in a coma for two days and upon waking can't remember her past at all. Suddenly a handsome well dressed gentleman starts visiting her. He says he is visiting the girl next door still in a coma. But Kay senses that she knows him and knows him well. After dreaming a couple of times she keeps seeing women getting murdered and one of them looks like her a lot. She keeps feeling a sense of danger, her mind keeps telling her to stay hidden. As snippets keep returning she just knows her gut she is in danger from a hitman. Kay and the handsome stranger escape and go into hiding while she trys to regain her memory and why someone wants her dead. Why is someone trying to kill her, did she see or know something she's not supposed to. With time being of the essence will she remember her past in time to save her life or will the hitman find her and finish the job he started? Very well written, exciting and I couldn't put it down. I just needed to know what happened next. A very good read I highly recommend.

Wow…what an amazing cover. Look at it closely. I love it. And, I love books that have a severe weather event. We are on the road in Virginia and a blizzard is headed Kay’s way. She must get home. She will be better there. The headlights blaze through the rear view window, gaining on her, and…..

She wakes with a name, Kay Smith, but no memory.

I am cynical and immediately suspicious of everyone around her. The doctor, the nurses and the guy who visits the comatose woman in the bed next to hers. Lest She Forget is a romantic suspense novel, so….is he the villain or the hero? They chat, and seeing she is alone, he leaves her his number. I have a feeling she will be using it…soon.

Kay could leave her past behind. Start over. But, we all know the past always catches up to us. Just because you’re paranoid, it doesn’t mean that people aren’t out to get you. She definitely needs to keep that paranoia alive. She is being hunted….again. By who? And why?

As she does her research, a sympathetic hospital clerk shows her concern by sharing all the information she can find about ‘Erin Johnson’. Her research leads her to Nick Costa, the mysterious visitor.

About halfway through, the tension rises and keeps building. The chase is on. The clock is ticking and the body count is rising. I have a revelation and why I didn’t see that coming, I don’t know. Was I so involved in the moment that I didn’t try to predict the outcome? I do love when an author can keep me in the moment.

This is Lisa Malice’s debut novel. With the amazing job she did, the sky’s the limit and I hope to around for her next fabulous story.

I received an ARC of this book and what a treat! Very creative storyline that sucked me in quickly and wouldn't let me go. I had difficulty pacing myself because I just wanted to keep reading. There were many twists that kept me on my toes and on the edge of my seat. A real page turner with a well-thought-out plot and interesting, believable characters. Looking forward to whatever is next from Lisa Malice.

The book grabbed my interest right away, but main character had amnesia, a too often used plot device (in my opinion). I had the mystery uncovered, as did held of the book group, by halfway through. It read more like a soap opera. First novel for this author.

This is a slow burner book, with characters that are somewhat relatable. The scenario seems widely unlikely and highly doubtful. All the stars in the universe would have to align perfectly for this weird scenario to happen. Which I get it’s fiction, but it seemed a bit much.

I also had a problem with the grammar mistakes in the book. Nothing drives me more insane than a book with several spelling and/or grammar problems. Is that not what editors are for? Overall this was my first book of 2024 and I felt obligated to finish it because I was already over 60% done. Not sure if I would recommend this book or read another book by this author. While I have said all of the above, it is not the worst book I have ever read , and therefore gave it a generous 3 out of 5.

I have been in a reading slump, and this definitely helped pull me out. I really enjoyed reading this and could not put it down. It took me awhile to figure out what in the world was happening.

There were some big grammatical errors throughout but with how much I enjoyed the story, I didn’t let them bother me. There were some parts that seemed to drag, but then it would pick up pass again.

The characters in this book were so well-developed and complex, making it easy to become emotionally invested in their journeys. The protagonist, a strong and determined woman, was incredibly relatable and her resilience in the face of danger was inspiring. The author's attention to detail in describing the settings and atmosphere added another layer of depth to the story, making it feel incredibly vivid and real.

The pacing of the book was perfect, with just the right amount of action and suspense in each chapter. The twists and turns kept me guessing until the very end, and I was constantly surprised by the unexpected revelations and shocking moments. The author's ability to create tension and build suspense was truly masterful, and I found myself unable to put the book down.

One of the things that stood out to me was the author's ability to seamlessly weave together multiple storylines and subplots. Each thread of the story was intricately connected, and as the pieces fell into place, it was like watching a complex puzzle come together. The way the author tied everything together in the end was incredibly satisfying and left me in awe of their storytelling skills.

But it wasn't just the suspense and mystery that made this book captivating. The underlying themes and messages woven throughout added depth and substance to the story. It explored themes of trust, betrayal, and the lengths one would go to protect the ones they love. It also delved into the power of resilience and the strength of the human spirit.

Overall, this book was a thrilling and captivating read that kept me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. The author's ability to create suspense, develop complex characters, and weave together multiple storylines made it a truly unforgettable reading experience. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a gripping and suspenseful read that will keep them guessing until the very end.

Thank you to Partners In Crime Tours and the author for allowing me to read and review this book.

Really enjoyed this book. I received an advanced copy from a friend and read while on vacation. I thought the story was very clever: a woman drives her car into a lake and has no recollection of how she got there or who rescued her or why she is in a rehab facility. The story slow burns and provides the requisite twist and turns you need in any new fiction book. I enjoyed the twist as well, it was a clever way to go.

Overall its a fun, beach read and great for the summer. Well done!

MY THOUGHTS -

Oh my goodness, talk about suspenseful. Mind blowing suspense, twists and turns, and spiderwebs.
This book was absolutely unputdownable! Or I should say my Kindle was unputdownable.

By the middle of chapter nineteen I was literally suspicious of everyone, yep, every single person! I found someone else who was reading it at the same time as I was and we were constantly comparing notes and thoughts the whole time. This book would be great for a Book club or Book talk!

I felt like every few chapters the author would give me another jigsaw piece to add to the puzzle, little nuggets along the way. And then finally at the end - the puzzle was complete. Each time I received a new piece of the puzzle I would think back a few chapters and the revelation would come…
“Oh! That’s why that happened!” there were so many of those Ah-ha moments.

This book, this storyline, was brilliant! I love books about memory loss (don't know why???) and this one was perfect!

At first I thought this was going to be your typical amnesia mystery. But Malice has hung that aspect of the novel on a frame of murder at the highest level. It is a good combination of murder mystery and the conspiracy behind it. There was a serious twist near the end that was not a surprise but did explain so much.

There was quite a bit of information included about traumatic memory loss and the possible techniques to regain it. It was really interesting to learn about dissociate fugue, caused by severe psychological trauma.

This is a novel for readers who like much character thought with good doses of suspense added from time to time. The characters were developed well and the novel's pace was consistent. It is a good debut and I will be looking for more from Malice.

I received a complimentary egalley of this book through Partners in Crime Book Tours. My comments are an independent and honest review.

Or was she trying to save herself? The series of past events are traumatising her and the questions are running in her veins like a burning flame.

People have facades and the woman’s instinct feeling is saying her to stay hidden but she has no idea about her past and with whom she is trying to hiding from or who is she? Her past is like a tangled puzzle, Will she unveil the truth and deadly secrets.

The book is filled with twists and turns. The writing is gripping and plot is intriguing. Love the revelation at the end. It was shocking and terrifying. The ending was so unpredictable.

Lest She Forget is a psychological thriller chock-full of secrets, lies, and deception. It's everything you want from a memory thriller, where the main character wakes up early on in the book, missing all memories of who they are or what they may have previously been involved in. You as the reader slowly parse through the many mysteries of who Kay is, or used to be, alongside her. The plot is one of those that continually catches you off guard, with twists you'd never see coming.

What would you do if you awoke from a nightmare in a hospital, battered and broken with no memory of who you are or how you got here? The nurses call you by an unfamiliar name, Kay Smith. Who is that? The psychiatrist says you were in a serious car accident and have been in a psychogenic coma for two days and you have PTSD. It’s all so overwhelming. Do you trust the nice man visiting your comatose roommate? He is handsome and you are confusingly drawn to him. But do you trust him when he offers to help you? All the while, your subconscious tells you to “Keep Hiding.”
Lisa Malice’s debut psychological thriller takes the reader on a cat-and-mouse roller coaster ride as Kay Smith tries to figure out who she is, how she ended up in the hospital, and whether the mysterious Nick Costa fits into the puzzle. And who is trying to kill her? You won’t believe the twist. Enjoy the ride.

The thing I love about well-done psychological suspense is that the story keeps me constantly thinking, trying to unravel all the unreliable threads and separate them from the facts. Or, at least what passes for facts in fiction lol. Lest We Forget by Lisa Malice is one such novel. (Note: This is a general market title, so please don’t miss my reviewer’s note at the end of the review.)

From the moment we watch ‘Kay Smith’ get run off the road during a blizzard… then be rescued from the icy water even as an inner voice whispers to her to ‘keep hiding’… then gasp with her as she wakes up with no memory of who she is or how she got to the rehab facility… I was hooked, trying to figure out who Kay really was. And who is Nick Costa to her? She’s obviously drawn to him and associates him with safety … but can she really trust her instincts – and Nick? And why is this foul-mouthed & ruthless hitman after her? And who’s actually behind it? Gah!! It seems like for every blurry answer that we start to see come into focus, at least twenty more questions and twisty layers come to light. Waiting for her memory to come back had me on pins and needles, especially as her flashbacks seem to imply that she’s not an innocent victim. As I said, I love plots like this and Lest We Forget definitely gave my brain a workout!

I enjoyed Kay’s character and the chemistry she had with Nick, even when she’s not sure who she is or if he’s one of the good guys. It was interesting to learn a bit more about psychogenic amnesia, and then of course begin speculating on what could have caused Kay’s. Nick himself is quite charming and swoony, not only in his protectiveness toward Kay but in his motives. And as the pieces start to fall into place, we get a new appreciation for the strength of both of these characters, albeit for different reasons.

Bottom Line: Lest She Forget by Lisa Malice isn’t the ‘same old, same old’ amnesia suspense. You may think you’ve started to figure it out but, let me assure you, it’s full of surprises and unexpected twists as well as layered characters with complex motivations. I thought I was starting to piece it together (and I was… sorta) but I also knew it was just as plausible that I was way off (and I was… sorta). Either way, though, I was rooting for Kay from start to finish and greatly admired her pluck and determination. This is a twisty brain teaser of a read that keeps you on the edge of your seat!

Reviewer’s Note: Followers of my reviews may want to be aware that, while the publisher indicated the language level was ‘mild’, there are several f-bombs as well as other strong cursing in this novel.

Late one night, an upset woman drives through a Virginia snowstorm. With bright headlights behind her, she believes someone is following her until, suddenly, she is forced to the wrong side of the road. As she veers back into the right lane, the truck pulls alongside and she can see the driver pointing a gun at her. They’re both headed for a bridge, one too narrow to accommodate both vehicles.

Too late she realizes she’s being forced off the road . . . and into the icy water. Confused when hands grab her, she hears a deep voice speaking words she can't quite hear. A warning in her head suggests she keep hiding, so she surrenders to the welcoming blackness.

And when she awakens, she has no memory of what happened . . . or of her identity.

Who is she? Why did someone try to kill her? And is she safe now?

=========

Told from the point of view of the protagonist, this compelling tale of secrets, lies, and memories will appeal to readers who enjoy psychological suspense, mysteries, and/or thrillers. Pulled into the telling of the tale from its outset, readers are sure to find themselves immersed in this unputdownable narrative.

Populated by complicated, well-defined characters, the story slowly reveals its secrets; from the outset, a continually-building tension flows throughout the telling of this captivating tale, keeping readers on the edge of their seats turning pages as fast as possible.

As Kay struggles to regain her memory, themes of trust, power, and family play a part in the telling of the tale as bits and pieces of her memory struggle to surface. Although astute readers are likely to figure out the massive plot twist long before its reveal, the chilling narrative takes a few more unexpected turns on its way to a largely satisfying denouement.

Highly recommended.

“Trust no one. My subconscious is right. That must be my approach.”

This is one book that took me a bit by surprise! I was a little scared of how long it was at 500 pages I wonder if it would be too long! It wasn’t at all, it was a page-turner right from the beginning. It was different which made it a good thriller and suspense novel. This novel had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. From the beginning it was eerie and I trusted no one around her! As Kay Smith slowly regains her memory tensions will rise and the clock is ticking. Will it be too late? I was instantly sucked in and could not stop reading.

I enjoyed the characters and thought they were well-developed and complex, I was on a rollercoaster ride of emotions. I will say the last 3rd of the book was amazing, it had a plot twist that I did not see coming at all! I was pleasantly surprised and loved the ending!

Overall this is a mindblowing suspense that is filled with twists and turns. I felt like I was there with Kay trying to solve the mystery alongside her. The setting was perfect it set the tone of suspense and eeriness as we questioned who could we trust. This is what makes this an unforgettable thriller that you should read!

Lest She Forget by Lisa Malice is a thriller novel that you would not be able to put down. Set in Virginia we are in a blizzard and Kay knows she must get home. Seeing in her rearview window the headlights she realizes they are approaching quickly. Kay Smith wakes up with only her name but no memory. She does not trust anyone around her, how could she? She is determined to solve the mystery of her past before it's too late. She knows one thing she was being hunted but by who? And why? Thank you to BookSirens, the author, and CamCat Books for giving me an advance copy of Lest She Forget in the hope of an honest review. This debut novel by Lisa Malice is a twisty psychological thriller featuring an unreliable narrator. Alternating scenes from the point of view of the bad guy serve to heighten the stakes and convey to the reader the danger that threatens the heroine.
The protagonist, telling her story in first person present tense, is a young woman who awakens from a coma with amnesia and a battered face. All anyone can tell her is that her car went off the road into a lake, and a good Samaritan pulled her out. But she has no ID and no recollection of what happened before the accident, or even who she is. She's in a rehab center under the name of Kay Smith, but it doesn't ring a bell. As she starts investigating, trying to recover her identity, her situation grows more and more puzzling. The good Samaritan has vanished, and Kay suspects he gave a fake name and even some incorrect details. But why?
Then people who have helped her start dying. As her memories gradually return and she discovers more about her plight, she learns she's a high-profile public figure. And someone is trying to kill her. But she still doesn't know who or why, or who she can trust.
The story starts out slowly, and there are a lot of technical, psychiatric details given that are necessary to help with plausibility. After a few chapters, as the twists keep coming, it becomes a page-turner.
There were times when I had to suspend disbelief but they did not detract from my enjoyment of the tale, and the ending was quite satisfying.
Highly recommended for anyone who loves psychological thrillers.

I often pride myself on being able to dissect a thriller/suspense/mystery novel early on as I get into the plot. That’s why the psychological aspect really amps up my excitement over a book. If I had been shopping in a bookstore, this book would’ve grabbed my attention simply based on the cover. When you glance it, you see one layer. But look a little closer and you’ll see the layers. It’s a fantastic omen to the storyline!

Kay Smith wakes up and everything seems askew. She’s not even positive that this is her name and the vibes of everyone around her is causing unease. Because of her uncertainty, I began feeling a connection to Kay. I wanted to protect her and prevent her from experiencing more trauma. Armed with her fake name and clues that aren’t adding up, Kay begins digging, exposing herself to more danger when her past collides with the present. Although the beginning seems a bit slow, as you hit mid-book, you’ll feel grateful for the journey as the bits and pieces fall into place. It also helps build the tension!

This is a fantastic psychological thriller! I felt my chest tighten and my breathing increase exponentially over and over again. I questioned every character, their motives, and actions. No one was safe from my scrutiny. If you want to give your psyche a workout, grab this book!

An accident, amnesia, death, murder, confusion, distrust, conspiracy… together it all creates a suspenseful thriller that will keep you guessing until the end.

A woman awakes from a coma in the hospital after a car accident. However, she remembers absolutely nothing- who she is, the accident, the people calling her friend, nothing! She is in a psychiatric facility. Why? She needs to get out so she can find the answers to her past. But there is a stalker? Who is he? What does he want? Is she in danger? She just does not remember enough. Run!

This was a great book! Thoroughly enjoyed the level of suspense and mystery. The thrills came in intermittent parts throughout the book keeping you on your toes. Towards the ending, parts start to form the full picture and the thrill ramps up as the woman finds herself in dangerous positions. It was a rollercoaster ride!

I would recommend this to seekers of action, mystery, thrill, and suspense! Hold on to your boots!

I would like to thank Booksirens, Camcat Publishing, and Lisa Malice for this digital copy of the book to review. My opinions are my own.

Lest She Forget follows a woman who wakes up with amnesia after a car accident. While she begins to attempt to piece her life together and figure out who she is, she only remembers one thing: trust nobody. The more clues she finds to her identity, she realizes that the car accident might not have been an accident after all. There’s a man who is after her and wants her dead. She has no idea why this man is after her, but she knows that he will stop at nothing to get to her, even if that entails a trail of bodies in her wake. She cannot trust anyone in her quest for answers: not even herself.
Lisa Malice does a fantastic job of weaving together this story and will hook readers from the very beginning. A lot happens throughout the story, but it never feels rushed or convoluted. This is a fantastic suspense novel that will keep you guessing until the very last page.
VERDICT: This would be a great addition to any fiction collection. Readers of authors such as Alex Michaelides or Paula Hawkins will love this book.

I feel like I'm in the minority with Lest She forget, but I was hoping for a lot more with this book.

As I don't give spoilers, this is going to be hard to tell you why I only liked this book and in honesty, was disappointed with it too. Once you get to the half way mark, maybe a little less you learn on single piece of information about Angela and Amy. I won't say more than that. As soon as you know that piece of information it's VERY easy to work out where this book is going and what will happen. I kept hoping I hadn't worked it out, but I had. The ending was far too neat after that and I was just filled with disappointment.

If you are someone who doesn't usually work out the mystery of a book, then I'm sure you will love Lest She Forget. For me though, this was predictable and I wasn't really surprised by anything. It's a good story, but I needed a lot more. 3 stars.

I love a great thriller and this story is super engagingly written by the author!
This story is the story of "Kay Smith" who wakes up from a coma in a rehab center finding out she was in a car accident on one dark and snowy night. She doesn't remember who she is or anything about herself.
There is a man named Felix who is a bad and dangerous man on the hunt for a woman who also got into a car accident on a snowy road late one night. And the roommate Kay has, there was a man named Nick who is in a creepy way more aquatinted with Kay than she likes.
OMG, to find out who Kay actually is! WOW! I was so shocked about that one folks. And then the more the story continues, I mean I got so pulled into this one to find out what happened to "Kay".
