Kou’s getting the hang (fang?) of being a half-vampire, but nothing really matters in terms of the plot because a bunch of fights break out.
I get it, I get it. It’s me, hi, I’m the problem, it’s me. I wanted this decidedly shonen series to continue being decidedly not a shonen series. Yes, it had Nazuna wearing her Nazuna outfit and all, but I loved the slow burn and quiet pacing of the story plus the occasional raunchy goofing off.
At least the chemistry between all the characters remains, but more walls get demolished in this one volume than the entire rest of the series combined. And Kou’s friend, who this is all regarding, doesn’t even show up once.
The action’s actually pretty decent, but I just… this is practically abusing my love for these characters to essentially turn them into foils for punching one another. It would be more annoying except the parts where it does breathe for a second are really quite nice. The effort made earlier on is ironically paying off in terms of keeping me invested as the shift moves away from what got me invested in the first place.
Even the mangaka mentions at the end that apparently this turned into a battle manga and admits that they’d figured out the ending of the series but have no idea how they’re getting there. It kind of shows.
And that’s not bad, per se, since we have gotten some really good storylines when the narrative has veered off from the original premise and gone for a more serious side of things, which, not for nothing, added Kyouko to the mix.
The problem I have is that it’s taking a story that was wonderfully contemplative and unique and turning it into something very much like every other smash-punch series going. It had plenty of places to go, but through several stories of a building wasn’t one I was dying for.
So it goes. Like I said, it wasn’t terrible, although the antagonists in question get a little fleshing out but not enough to exactly be interesting. The second one in particular is only of note because of what they know about vampirism compared to the others.
3.5 stars - it’s okay and my wistful remembrances of what I had will let me indulge myself and round up for this volume, but it’s definitely going to be assessed on a case by case basis from here on out.
Habían muchas formas de hacer avanzar la trama y resolver los conflictos, pero debo de admitir que me dejó impresionado lo bien que lo han hecho. P.D. Es un deleite ver el dibujo de manos de este manga. Es arte.
This new Azami guy seems interesting. I like him better than that super strong girl vampire. Azami seems pretty chill and he looked cooler with his mask on. So far his personality was cool to me.
I'm still curious to learn more about Mahiru's mother and the rest of his family. It was made clear in this volume that his mother is currently still grieving. His family hasn't yet accepted Mahiru's brother's loss. Now I can see why Mahiru doesn't spend much time at home. Ko is also becoming a cooler character to me, he's starting to show more emotions lately, and I'm all for it. Before I didn't have much of an opinion of him since he seemed too gloomy, but now he's finally starting to have more of a personality.

4 to 4.5 If this is slowly turning into an action manga, I am all for it! I would love it if they could keep this up and have meaningful action sequences after a great bit of storytelling. So far all the action in this manga has been meaningful and not mindless. If they can keep that up and create good battle stuff that you get in a shounen manga that would be the best. I still want the chill vibes to continue though.
I like this volume a lot, but it comes at the cost of beginning a new arc and introducing new characters. In my opinion, they way they were introduced was very stereotypical and didn't exactly leave me interested in learning more about them. It is still Call of the Night though, and I'm biased towards the series.
This has rapidly become one of my favorite ongoing series. I tore through this one. The new characters are excellent and this only gets better and better with each volume. I can’t wait for the next one!
Holy cow! Did the pacing pick up or what. And, we finally get a truly evil cliffhanger! Fortunately, I still have a stack to work through. I’m enjoying the change up, but I hope things return to the rhythm established in the first ten volumes.
Ko contiues exploring his new powers. Two new vampires come after Anko Uguisu, the private eye, because she threatened to reveal vampires to the world. #Edelweiss+
