This book was like being in the mood for a hamburger and getting a Whopper from Burger King. It's not in the conversation for the best burger I've ever had, but it was exactly what I wanted and satisfied the craving.

Character - 6/10, Plot - 6/10, Setting/Game Mechanics - 6/10, Writing - 7/10, Enjoyment - 8/10

The main character, Rin, is a typical bland character with a solid work ethic and an overlooked unique skill that, you guessed it, ends up allowing him to cheat the system to grow stronger. Supporting characters include a low-level healer girl, Yui and a medium-level spellblade named Rei. Rei has a unique skill as well, which has led to her joining Rin's former team comprised of unique skill holders. For a bit of backstory, Rin was forced to leave this team shortly after they all formed since his unique skill didn't seem to contribute anything to the party and they started seeing him as dead weight.

The story revolves around Rin using his unique skill, Dungeon Teleport, to bypass the usual one-week delay between completing a dungeon and being allowed to enter a new one. Rin had to toil for a year as a solo adventurer, gradually leveling up his Dungeon Teleport skill before it finally gained the ability to teleport inside any dungeon he's previously explored. This makes more sense when you know how the dungeon works which leads us into the...

Game mechanics. The story takes place on modern-day Earth, but 20 years after Dungeons full of monsters began appearing. During that time, people gained stats, skills, and the ability to level through the use of a System. What's different with this story is that an adventurer who clears a dungeon by defeating the boss enters a one-week "Span" period where the system doesn't allow them to enter another dungeon. Additionally, clearing a dungeon gives a reward of levels depending on the dungeon's strength. The level reward varies from a single level to as high as 150 levels. Once our MC's Dungeon Teleport skill hits level 10, it allows him to teleport into a dungeon and bypass the "Span" restriction. This allows him to farm up levels and loot way faster than normal. As you can imagine, the levels and stats get out of hand quickly, with mid-level characters being leveled in the 2,000s. So while a lot of the numbers are basically nonsense, it was a decent twist for a unique skill.

The writing was functional. No real errors to speak of and no real fancy turns of phrase either. Pretty much the standard you expect if you've read many light novels.

I felt pretty lukewarm when I began this novel, but I was only looking for something of a palette cleanser after a fairly heavy read and this fit the bill. As the story progressed, it managed to draw me in. Sure, it was full of the standard tropes, but luckily they weren't ones that really get on my nerves. In typical light novel fashion, there are the beginnings of a harem, which is annoying. I think harems annoy me most because we know that a typical Japanese light novel protagonist won't actually do anything so the whole romance angle feels like a waste of time and scenes. On the flip side, stories where the plot ends up being a weak excuse to string various sex scenes together aren't my thing either. I can only hope the harem shenanigans stay as minimal as possible in future books.

At the end of the day, if you are in the mood for an entertaining and light read about dungeon diving with a cheat skill, this book will probably give you what you're looking for.

I was pleasantly surprised by this one. I liked the art on the cover but thought the characters might be a bit generic. The premise was interesting, so I gave it a shot. It was a really fun and entertaining read, with characters that were more entertaining than I expected by a lot. Not exactly deep literature, but it went down easy.

Great

On the surface this feels somewhat generic, however the contemporary setting with dungeons makes it pretty fun. While not unique it does the concept really really well and I couldn't put it down. I'll be back for volume 2!

Usually in Fantasy VRMMORPG (Virtual Reality Massively Multiplayer-Online Role Playing Game)-like stories like this one, a player or adventurer does not gain levels by concluding a Dungeon, Dungeon Floor, only by defeating monsters does a player/adventurer gain XP towards gaining a level. That said, this author is a level-giving-slut (5 levels by concluding a Dungeon, sometimes 30 levels, sometimes 500 levels). The thing is, this author kind-of-breaks-the-rules-of-leveling, in that a player/adventurer that is already above the level range of a floor or Dungeon cannot level-up anymore by delving on that floor or Dungeon. The main character here, delves the exact Dungeon Floor Bosses and Final Dungeon Boss, 60-70 times consecutively (something that is seldomly allowed in real games) Usually there is a daily limit, weekly limit or monthly limit, or the loot that the player/adventurer would receive would be gi-normous and would break the "game balance" that is of vital importance to the game developers. But since this is not a "real-game" but a world that suffers from Dungeons and Monsters, things don't necessarily need to be up to Canon, but they still need to have "balance" and "make sense". If a player/adventurer defeats a Floor Boss, Dungeon Boss 60-70 times, then where is the 60-70 times of loot that they are supposed to receive? The author makes no balance between the level-ups, the loot given and the condition that above a certain level, players/adventurers can't gain XP (experience points) from lower level Floors and Dungeons.
Other than these "obvious flaws", the light novel is organized, thought out and the action flows at a good pace.
The only other "flaw" was with the illustrator...Rei and Yui are supposed to be both still going to "high-school" and 17 and yet Rei looks like a Victoria's Secret Underwear Model while Yui looks like a pre-teen girl??? I feel that the illustrator should have at least read the light novel before he created the illustrations. It's probably to attract the "loli" and "adult" readers, but then, it's not adapting well to what the author wrote in the story. The other thing is ethical, if they are Hana's age (main character's sister) then going out with girls that are his little sister's age just sounds really bad...

This novel starts off with a decent premise - in a dungeon exploration setting, the MC discovers a bug that lets his seemingly weak unique skill exploit the limitations in the system to let him gain levels at an unprecedented speed. Combine this with the fact that he's spent months of honing his combat abilities on a daily basis while others limit themselves to weekly runs, he becomes a truly overpowered protagonist in the blink of an eye.

Unfortunately, that's about as good as it gets. This is a harem series, and the harem consists of cardboard cutout heroines with no personality. Needless to say, it comes nowhere near close to passing the Bechdel test.

The worldbuilding is lacking as well. We see a few dungeons and learn a little bit about the management of dungeons, but we see nothing about the rest of the world. We learn little about the MC or his sister beyond their one-note backstory.

And because of all this lack of depth, the combat is lacking as well. When the plot eventually tosses the MC into a situation where he needs to punch above his weight (read: level), there's no tension. Of course he's going to win, and while he does pull off a few interesting moves, it's pretty dull overall.

Still, volume 1 ends with the suggestion that there is room for the series to grow into something better. Does it?

This is a fun start to a Dungeon style Dystopian Sci-Fi. As always the Monsters are not affected by bullets but Swords and Magic do the trick. Rin our main character is a typical guy that gets handed a Skill he thinks is no good, but discovers that he just got very lucky.
He tests the skill and after seeing exactly how to work it, cheats the system. Well not a cheat but a way to surpassing a limitation everyone else is stopped by.
He is now climbing the ranks at a blistering rate and he knows he has to keep the skill secret. But everyday it becomes harder.

Good but lots of fluff.

Really good premise. However it skips around to what seem to be completely unnecessary "sub plots?" That have little or no impact or the main plot. Just fluff or fan service maybe. I think this premise would be awesome with a dark feel like berserk or something.

This took quite a while to really amp up. I suppose I’m used to a lot of action in novels like this and this particular volume felt like it was a very slow start building a foundation. I found myself trying to guess what would be conflicts or climaxes or what they would add to make it more exciting. I will say by the end I was absolutely hooked and immediately had to dive into volume 2.

Interesting light novel. Not terribly different from Solo Leveling (same general premise) but has much smoother writing and it is way more upbeat and cheerful. I would be keen on reading more in the series to see if it changes a lot more further along in the story.

Fun little read

I liked the basis of this book. Weak main character gradually becomes stronger is always fun and entertaining. It is pretty light hearted too.

Surprisingly good read.

I enjoyed this novel. Can't wait for the next. I really didn't expect it to be as entertaining as it turned out to be.

nice and fun. Has all the flaws of every other series in the genre (poor character and world building).

Adventurers need to clear Dungeons that manifest in the real world. These dungeons may 'collapse' and the monsters within can escape into the real world. The MC discovered the ability to level up quickly, as the book title implies. The MC has a younger sister. And the MC needs to keep his levelling speed hidden from the rest of the world.

Are you having a deja-vu? Yes, this novel is very similar to the light novel 'Solo Levelling'. The pacing and the sense of achievement is very good, but the depth of world building and the secondary cast of characters is very limited.

If you like Solo Levelling, then you'll probably like this novel as well.
