In a world of swords and magic, where the Goddess is revered, Lyell Walt was fortunate enough to be born the first son and heir to an earldom. That is, until his parents disown him for losing pitifully in a fight with his younger sister, Ceres. Lyell had once been hailed as a prodigy—a wonder child—but the birth of his sister changed everything. After Ceres wounds him in their duel, an enigmatic old man swoops in to rescue Lyell and bestows upon him a necklace containing a jewel that has been blessed by the goddesses and passed down through the last seven generations of Walt leaders. As Lyell sets out, necklace in hand, will he be able to prove himself despite his humiliating loss to his sister? And moreover, will he be able to solve the mystery behind Ceres’s monstrous strength and the strange sway she seems to hold over his entire family?
It's very well written and I liked the "realism" involving the MC being useless due his upbringing and circunstances. Constantly reading the opinions of the 7 was a pain but i guess that was intentional
A good first book to kick off the series! There are a lot of the typical world-building elements here, guilds, Demonic Stones, the typical fantasy monsters, etc., but where it shines are the characters and the good balance the author has between comedic moments and more intense story beats.
We don't often get a male character in light novels that is as vulnerable (or tbh, useless, as his family constantly tells him) as Lyle is. It's a refreshing difference in a genre all about power fantasy and gives him a lot of room to grow into himself. I thought it was really clever for the author to use Lyle's uselessness as comedy for the first half of the novel, only to make us feel sympathetic to him when he has a full mental breakdown over his inability to do anything. Not only do we feel bad for him in that moment, it makes you feel personally bad since you've been laughing at him along with his ancestors. Add to this the diverse and interesting cast of characters that are the seven historical heads of his family, each with pasts that can be slowly uncovered, and we've got a lot of material to delve into character-wise.
It's additionally refreshing to have a fully fleshed out, deeply likeable female cast, despite this being a part of the harem genre (I've heard the author makes the harem very realistic and uses the dynamics between them all to make Lyle's life miserable, both for comedy but also possibly as a life lesson lol but I think we have a ways to go before we get there). Novem is honorable, dependable, talented and smart (if perhaps a tad too serious and devoted to Lyle) and effortlessly becomes both our favorite character as well as the favorite character of the majority of Lyle's ancestors. I also loved Zelphy, the no-nonsense female adventurer that the kids hire to train them. Aria, our second harem member, is added close to the end of the novel so we don't get to see too much of her, but her backstory is deeply sympathetic.
I'm intrigued to see where the story will go and how it will develop! We've got Ceres' character to investigate as well, and I think once we hit the bigger action scenes down the line its going to be a really fun read. As the editor of volumes 2+, I'm super excited to be working on the series!
1.5 stars. Some of it was OK and some of it was disliked
Yet another JP novel with a strong beta MC. The dude spends his life getting pushed around by seven different voices, and has no clue what he wants in life and there is no goal to the story.
Characters: 1/5 disliked The main character spends the whole time getting pushed around. He’s very bland and passive. I dislike that.
World: 2/5 OK It was really boring and generic, but that’s OK as long as the story can be carried by the actual plot and characters. Unfortunately this story was not carried, so oh well.
Story: 1.5/5 some of it was OK and some was disliked The entire story is very passive and wishy-washy. They attempt to do a smart main character thing where the main character plans some plot that the reader watches unfold without prior knowledge of what the plot is, but it was not clearly smart, and instead just hammered in the fact that the mc is an aimless loser with average intellect. The only thing he has going for him is above average combat instinct and magic, but that’s not interesting enough to make me care about such a bland character.
Among other light novels, this one is far better than average. Not quite a masterpiece, but near it. The concept is interesting. If this will not turn out to be harem in the end, will be a real good series 😁
