Also writes Young Adult under Rachel Hawthorne, Jade Parker, and with her son as J.A. London.

Lorraine Heath has always had a soft spot for emotional love stories. No doubt because growing up, watching movies with her mom, she was taught that the best movies "won't half make you cry."

She is the daughter of a British beauty (her mom won second place in a beauty contest sponsored by Max Factor® during which she received a kiss from Caesar Romero, (the Joker on the original Batman TV series) and a Texan who was stationed at Bovingdon while serving in the air force. Lorraine was born in Watford, Hertfordshire, England, but soon after moved to Texas. Her "dual" nationality has given her a love for all things British and Texan, and she enjoys weaving both heritages through her stories.

When she received her BA degree in psychology from the University of Texas, she had no idea she had gained a foundation that would help her to create believable characters—characters that are often described as “real people.” She began her career writing training manuals and computer code for the IRS, but something was always missing. When she read a romance novel, she became not only hooked on the genre, but quickly realized what her writing lacked: rebels, scoundrels, and rogues. She's been writing about them ever since.

Her work has been recognized with numerous industry awards including RWA's RITA®. Her novels have appeared on bestseller lists, including USA TODAY and the New York Times.

The author of more than 60 novels, she writes historical and contemporary romance for adults and historical romance for teen readers.

Under the names Rachel Hawthorne and Jade Parker, she writes popular contemporary, historical, and paranormal romance for teens readers. She also writes young adult novels with her son under the name J. A. London.

✨ “She determined her best course was simply to make him suffer.”✨

Sometimes I want feminine rage to just be rage. I want the heroine to be able to do revenge with no remorse. No having to worry about repercussions. No hero constantly trying to apologize. I don’t want him to keep flashing his rakish grin; I want him W E E P I N G. Sometimes I want him to sit in silent pain for 90% of the book and think about what he’s done because even apologizing is selfish. I don’t want them to touch until he’s at least 5ft under with grief and remorse. This was one of those times I needed full devastation, and I simply don’t think I felt that.

A lot of his remorse seemed to happen off page or was overshadowed by his apologies that were really just meant to make himself feel better. He kept forcing his presence on her and I’m like no! let her hate you in peace it’s the least you can do!! She doesn’t need your help!! You gave up all rights to caring about her when you valued “honor” over her happiness because NEWSFLASH you made a promise to her before anyone else!!! And he had the audacity to call HER a COWARD for not trusting him. Oooo my blood boils.

She really gave him too much of herself too early. She had a nice guy courting her but he was taking a while so Knightly was like why don’t we reconcile in public and be seen together so he gets jealous. Regina acquiesced too quickly and idk it felt like he was winning small victories all over this book. He shouldn’t have been allowed to even touch her until at least 90%. I found him to be more selfish than remorseful which sucked because it’s a Lorraine book and she still did make me like him.

I also really struggled with the revenge portion of the book. She wrote the scandalous stories about him to ruin his life (I SUPPORT), but then they were being used against her as well (it’s a lot to explain but basically her agency was being threatened by more idiot men)!! BOO. LET HER LIVE. LET HER DO REVENGE. I don’t want her regretting the revenge or feeling bad. Don’t get me wrong, Regina had some GREAT lines against Knightly, but overall she gave way too much and he didn’t give enough.

I had the highest of hopes at the beginning because Regina seemed both like a woman scorned and a woman committed to Knightly’s suffering. I thought it was going to be the delicious kind of angsty, but it really just felt watered down. The steam was pretty lukewarm and even her scandalous story revenge wasn’t as metal as it could’ve been. Pull a Jessica Trent and shoot him with no remorse. I don’t think I’ll have the urge to reread this. Rook is a wildcard so I’ll definitely still read his book and I hope Lawrence gets one too. Overall, I miss old school Lorraine levels of bonkers. Hell I even miss the toe fetishes. He didn’t worship her delicate toes once!!

⭐️⭐️.5*/5 🌶️.75*/5

*I don’t really think this is a two star book because I really did love parts of it, so I rounded up to three on Goodreads…but that could change the more I stew.

*There was maybe enough to push it to two peppers but honestly there was way more fade to black and vague language than there should’ve been.

**SPOILERS BELOW**

His reason for leaving her at the altar was just not dramatic enough to get any of my sympathy. Of course he didn’t talk to her or tell her or talk to anyone about anything. He made a promise to his abusive father and thought he needed to honor it out of duty??? Bro he deserves none of your respect??? I can’t believe he really just fucked Regina over so badly out of weirdly misplaced HONOR??? I think that’s about the least honorable thing he could’ve done. It actually made me so angry.

I had inklings of what he was going to reveal and I’m sorry but illegitimacy is always such a weak excuse. And it’s weak of him to assume it would’ve mattered to Regina. I understand about the situation his mother was in, but there were so many ways he could’ve protected her and STILL married Regina. But noooo he made a promiseeee and that trumps everything!

Further, nothing really changed about the situation after five years but then he was suddenly able to just tell his father to go fuck himself?? He literally got her pregnant (secret baby) and left her and she was ultimately okay with that?? Her reputation was destroyed and he was totally fine. Maybe he didn’t mean for that to happen but use your brain sir!!! She’s illegitimate and you’re a lord like wow who the fuck knew she’d be the one taking all the hits.

AND YOU’RE TELLING ME REGINA JUST FORGAVE HIM??? I would’ve been ANGRIER that he didn’t talk to me about it because the solution was so simple. She literally said she supported his decision to leave her at the altar 100% at the end and I’m sorry but that’s absolutely unacceptable. He should’ve still been groveling at her feet but no she was like it’s fine now I’ll even be your mistress. Even five years earlier, he needed nothing from his father and had the means to protect his mother while still giving Regina the love he promised.

He just got to go fuck a million women and feel sorry for himself. And I was like cool at least Regina was also getting dicked down for five years but NO. She was CELIBATE. God that makes me so angry. I need a wall in which to punch. I prefer the wrongdoer to be the celibate one or for both of them to be. But the wronged party really should be getting daily orgasms for their troubles.

THIS WAS SO GOOOOOD. The second chance? The angst? The secret!?

I loved how the heroine was secretly writing about her time with the hero before he left her at the alter. Everyone can tell the book is about him, but only he knows who's really writing the story. He has to confront her and confront old feelings and why he really left her. I was OBSESSED!!!!! Please read this if you haven't yet!!

The Notorious Lord Knightly is book 2 in The Chessmen series and we get a second chance, historical romance with this one!

“I love you more deeply today than I did before. I appreciate you more. Want you more. Perhaps I needed to go through a bit of fire to be forged into the man who deserves you. I’ll never take you or having you for granted.”

I was obsessed with this book! I actually saw some early, mixed reviews for this one and kind of went in apprehensively. But I was still going to get to it because Lorraine Heath is my historical romance queen. And omg did I eat this up! This is a second chance romance and early on we do find out it has one of my fav secret tropes in it and I was honestly just living for this book.

Regina and Knightly were engaged in the past and on their wedding day he told her their whole relationship was a joke and ditches her. Regina’s reputation was tarnished and now we catch up with them 5 years later where she is anonymously publishing a scandalous book all about villainous Lord K. We find out a lot about both Regina and Knightly’s family lives, his father is a Duke who treated Knightly and his mother horribly. Regina was a by-product of her father’s affair with her mother and struggles with creating a relationship with her half siblings.

I am just forever obsessed with Lorraine Heath books and this one exceeded my expectations. I feel like what we find out about both character’s pasts really made sense for the decisions they make throughout the story. As always with LH reads, we see a ton of familiar places and faces: Twin Dragons and loads of the Trewloves in particular in this one! I cannot wait for the next/last Chessmen book!

If you’re looking for a scorned FMC who repeatedly and firmly rejects the MMC in a way that he absolutely deserves- this is the book for you. I especially enjoyed this in audiobook format, as it really captured the disdain of the FMC perfectly. Of course she still has her weak moments, else how would they get their HEA?

The ending was maybe resolved in a way that made the whole relationship problem seem irrelevant in the first place but I’ll forgive it since the rest of the book was great. FYI - I haven’t read the other books in this series and it didn’t seem necessary - it can be read as a standalone.

Jilted and heartbroken, Miss Regina Leyland pens an anonymous book, exercising her feelings for Arthur, Lord Knightly, on page. The scandalous story quickly takes the Ton by storm and has everyone guessing the identity of its villainous “Lord K.” Knightly proposes a pretend reconciliation to throw the ton off and remedy Regina's reputation. But their false friendship soon resurfaces all their old feelings.

This is the second book in The Chessmen: Masters of Seduction series. The book stands alone quite well but Knight's friend group shows up, as do characters from the Sin for all Seasons series.

This story is told in present tense as well as flashbacks to the characters' previous relationship. Charming and wealthy Knightly intended to make a quick appearance at a party, until he spotted the beautiful Regina, illegitimate but beloved daughter of an earl. Their whirlwind courtship led straight to the alter, however Knightly showed up at the church and said he wouldn't marry her. Regina traveled for a time, and wrote a titillating story based on their relationship. She didn't expect the Ton to be so determined to identify the man and unmask the author. Neither has gotten over their love for each other, and that torment is captivating as they try to find a way forward. 4.5 stars rounded to five.

Tropes: Unexpected Title, Hero Falls First, Jilted, Ruined, Secret Job, Second Chance, Secret Baby

I am not a connoisseur of this genre but from time to time I do feel a need to read some over the top bodice ripper. The more ridiculous the better. Bring me all the "embers of desire" and "magical wands of pleasure"! Unfortunately, The Notorious Lord Knightly was not it. I feel like if you would change the cover of this book to resemble for example Bringing Down the Duke the story could easily pass as a historical romance.

Few years after Regina was left by the altar by the Earl of Knightly she decides to deliver her revenge and publishes a scandalous book where main character, "Lord K", alludes to her former fiancé. That propels Knightly to rekindle the contact and soon former lovers are starting to fall for each other again.

Everything about this book was so... middle-of-the-road that I already started forgetting the names of the characters (and I finished this book a day ago). Setup is fine, characters are ok, the story is decent. There is a lot of pinning, a lot of yearning and (to my dismay) you have to wait for the spicey scenes till page ~200 just to discover that they are not very good. It's a slow-burn enemies-to-lovers that does not feel like a bodice ripper almost at all. It's an ok book but definitely not what I expected.

Lorraine Heath is an absolute must read historical romance author in my eyes. Heath's writing is beautifully eloquent, her characters are clearly drawn, the pacing is on point, and the romance is beyond swoon-worthy. Heath has a way of centering a romance, swiftly drawing the reader in, and keeping us guessing on how this romance with come to fruition. The Notorious Lord Knightly is a beautiful second chance romance, that features a single mother, and a bit of a class difference (the heroine is an illegitimate daughter of a lord). If you are looking for a beautiful romance between two people who truly love each other despite of past hurts, then look no further than this recent release from Heath!

Lorraine Heath is a true master at her craft. Her writing is elegant and the way she crafts words is stunning and appears effortless. Heath can clearly illustrate what love feels like through her words, she beautifully weaves her words to express longing and passion. Her characters are rich, relatable and understandable. I adored Arthur, the hero, he is swoonworthy and such a cinnamon roll. Watching him love Regina from afar and fall head over heels for her daughter broke my heart. I love that he is so consistent in how he sees Regina, how he respects her and how he only wants what is best for her. I found Regina to be such a strong and wonderfully independent heroine. I love how she takes her life in her own hands and I love watching her fall back in love with Arthur. The depth of their feelings are so beautifully explored through their interactions, the care they show the other, and the understanding and trust they have and are rebuilding.

The chemistry and tension sizzles between Arthur and Regina, and Heath builds the sensuality of their relationship steadily throughout the novel. I love that we get insights into their past relationship through the Novel inserts (written by Regina) at the top of each chapter. This gives the reader a clear understanding of the sweetness of first love, the sensuality of first romance, and the trust of a young and innocent relationship. Because we have these small insights, Heath can slowly rebuild their relationship before they reenter into a physical relationship. Their relationship at every stage is so romantic and endearing.

The Notorious Lord Knightly is an absolute must read in my eyes! If you are a historical romance lover, if you are a Lorraine Heath lover, then you absolutely must do yourself a favor and read this romance!

Thank you to Avon Books and NetGalley for an eARC, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

This author always manages to take a character I was prepared to totally dislike and makes them, not only tolerable but very likable. From what I’d seen in some discussions, I was thoroughly convinced there was no way she could make me even tolerate Lord Knightly. I was, of course, wrong. I came to not only tolerate him but love him and I hope you will as well. I guess it goes to prove that we should never judge someone – especially if we don’t know the whole story. He was a young man forced into a choice that no one should ever have to make. Did he make the right choice? I’m sure you’ll decide for yourself after you read the book, but for me, I think perhaps he did. He just handled it very, very, very badly.

Five years ago the Earl of Knightly met Miss Regina Leyland at her come-out ball. He never intended to be there in the first place, but once he saw her, he was smitten. Regina was the illegitimate daughter of the Earl of Bremsford, but she was acknowledged and loved by her father – who also loved her mother. Regina’s father was oblivious to the reality of her life situation and he thought that just because he loved her and accepted her that all of society would as well. This ball was to find her a husband and she knew all of the eligible males who were there were only there because of the large dowry she had. Then, she was introduced to a man who seemed to care nothing about her dowry or her illegitimacy. How could she not fall in love with him? Theirs was an epic love story – until the day of the wedding when he arrived at the church and announced they would not marry.

Regina has had five years to stew about the way Knight had left her life in shambles. She is the one who paid the price for his betrayal. She lived abroad for a while – and when she came back, she was ready for revenge. Only, that revenge backfired, and – once again – Knight comes out the winner and she is in jeopardy.

Knight does his best to come to her rescue – and to keep his distance. Can Knight save Regina and still walk away again? Can Regina learn to even tolerate Knight after what he did to her? I absolutely loved the way Regina held on to her anger – because she had every right to that anger – she wasn’t bitter, but she was very distrustful of Knight. She questioned his every motive – even those that seemed to bring only good to her and bad to him. Can Regina ever get past the anger and hurt? Can she find love again with someone else? You’ll just have to read the book to see.

I can highly recommend this book. In it, you have an epic love story, a gut-wrenching betrayal, a villain, and an epilogue that will make your heart swell to the point of bursting. The writing is excellent, the pacing is near perfect, and the characters are deep and interesting. It is definitely a great read.

The Chessmen are four steadfast friends who have stood by each other since they met at school. One of the things they do is make pots of money as they are very good at investing. We first met them in the second book (The Duchess Hunt) of the Once Upon A Duke series where King finds his HEA. Bishop finds his HEA in the first book of this series – The Counterfeit Scoundrel. So, after this book, the last man standing will be Rook and I can only imagine it will be quite entertaining because in this book Rook tells Knight that love will never have its way with him. HA!

I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I was excited to get to this one back to back with the previous one and here I'm wondering if I have rated it too high.

I liked Regina and Knightly. They're both good, loyal people with secrets. I enjoyed reading their instant animosity and how their second chance was really the slowest of slow burns. Seeing the other Chessmen was fun and I loved the mentions of other characters from previous series.

Plot wise, it was a bit meh me. I wanted more conversation, not inner monologue. The full honesty between them came at different times and I struggled with parts of it.

Overall, there were parts of this story that didn't work for me, but it's Lorraine, so I'm always going to be reading.

The Notorious Lord Knightly is the second book in The Chessman series, and it focuses on Lord Knightly, a man who left his love at the alter five years ago. When a new serial releases about an innocent woman being seduced and abandoned Lord K, many believe the scandalous story is about Lord Knightly and a steamy love affair. And they’re right. The author? Regina Leyland, the woman he left at the altar.

Regina and Knight have so much chemistry! The story flashes back to what happened between them in the past and how they reconnect in the present because of the scandalous book Regina wrote. I like these slips into the past. You really get to see how deeply in love they were and how deeply wounded Regina was when Knight called off the wedding. Even more, you learn why Knight did what he did and how affected he was by his choices.

The pair has a complicated history, and Regina is so angry at Knight. She lashes out at him more than once, and Knight takes it. He knows he did her wrong, and he has a lot of regrets. Knight is a tortured hero (my favorite kind!) who vehemently wishes things were different. Still in love with Regina, Knight will do anything to ensure she has a better future even if it’s without him. There’s a lot of angst between them, which I always enjoy.

I think I rated this down a bit because it includes one of my least favorite tropes. However, the story is emotional and steamy, and the love story is swoon-tastic. Thanks to NetGalley and Avon for the advanced copy of the book. All thoughts are my own.

Book #2 in The Chessmen: Masters of Seduction series.

This is Lord Knightly (one of the Chessmen) + Regina’s hate-to-love, fake dating romance. After being jilted at the alter by Knightly five-years ago, Regina takes to paper by writing a steamy novel publishing it under “author unknown,” whilst using her ex-fiancé as “Lord K” in her book. Only he’s too smart not to have figured that out upon reading it and by whom it was written. This brings Knightly back into Regina’s life.. her underlying reason for writing the book was to settle old feelings and move on.. BUT of course it does the opposite. Although she’s still furious with him, their attraction + longing for one another is still there.. only wayyy deeper than before.

This was such an entertaining story and a fun series that picks up where “Once Upon a Dukedom” series leaves off. I love + adore Lorraine Heath’s storytelling.. a MUST read! ❥ 4.5 stars — Pub. 6/27/23

2.5/5.Weak basis for the plot. So many whys, like why would revealing your romance/sexcapade in a book be a way to bring down the man involved? Since when, then and now, would society frown upon a single man living it up? All it served was to tarnish her further once she has been identified, which was just a matter of time. Why did he not tell her the truth or at least part thereof in the beginning? LH has been around for so long that perhaps she feels she has exhausted all plotlines.

2 disappointed stars because it did not have enough romance for me. I guess I was in the mood to see the couple fall in love, but since it's a second-chance romance, there wasn't a lot of falling in love for them to do.

Objectively rating, it's a well-written story as are most books by Lorraine Heath. If I didn't rate based on the romance, then this would be a 4 out of 5. It helps that Kate Reading is the narrator.

I guessed correctly why the hero jilted the heroine five years prior due to a few hints here and there. It's a little predictable/unoriginal, I suppose. I liked that the heroine was still angry with him for jilting her and couldn't stand being in his presence. She'd flat-out ask him, "What the hell are you doing here?" two or three times. 😆 I can't recall if she actually used the word 'hell' though. I'm not sure how I felt when she forgave him. Did he get off too easy? 🤔🤔🤷🏻‍♀️

It is so difficult for me to find fault with a Lorraine Heath novel and this is no exception. The second book in The Chessmen series, fans of Heath will love all the little nuggets thrown their way from previous series and of course the most recent, The Counterfeit Scoundrel (Bishop’s book). This is Knightly’s book, and it is the perfect example of a second chance romance. Knightly left his intended Regina, at the altar five years ago and she has hated him ever since, not knowing what prompted him to change his mind on their nuptials. Was it her illegitimate birth? Did he fall for another? It is so easy for Regina to turn her broken heart into anger and the one-sided animosity between her and Knightly is enemies-to-lovers gold. You see Regina has anonymously penned a memoir of her escapades with the mysterious “Lord K”; it’s her way of getting back at Knightly by causing the ton to question whether he is the Lord K spoken of in the memoir. It’s the memoir that brings these two back into each other’s lives and embers from the fiery past spark to life as Arthur seeks to help rectify his actions towards Regina by finding her a suitor.
I loved the interactions between Knightly and Regina. There’s nothing quite like a man who realizes he’s made a mistake and will do anything to make it up to the heroine. Each MC has a secret they are unwilling to divulge to the other, yet their secrets (if they were to share them) are some of the most beautiful parts of their hearts. I’ll keep it spoiler free, but both hero and heroine make choices for the good of others, putting themselves second, and their relationship last. This book has so much heart and build up. Knowing it’s a romance, of course you know Knightly and Regina will come together eventually, but the lead up is so expertly done and oh so swoon-worthy. I also appreciate Heath’s characters. They are always strong and decisive and I always know I’m going to love them because they stick to their convictions. I can’t wait to add a physical copy of The Notorious Lord Knightly to my shelf (I highlighted NINE passages) and chose to review this book on my own. I received a gifted ARC from Avon and NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

I am such a sucker for a good period romance and I have read several by Heath now. She has a bit of a formula, I guess they all do. But it works, and I love it!

In this one Regina falls madly in love with Lord Knightly, only to have him leave her at the alter. Devastated, she travels to Europe to get away from the pain.
5 years later their paths meet again, when a book is published by an anonymous author, talking about the personal exploits of an infamous "Lord K". Surprisingly it is very similar to his own exploits with a Regina, his ex-fiancé and he half tries to expose her and half tries to make amends to her shattered reputation by helping her get a husband. But why did he leave her at the alter all those years ago?

Look, it's a great read when you just want to read something fun and sexy for a while. I loved the fiery Regina and Lord K is not quite what he seems. I loved the slow burn and romantic tension and Heath knows how to write a love scene!

A great little read! 4 stars! Going to slowly make my way through all her stuff!

**Trigger Warnings Below**

Heroine: Regina Leyland, 27. Recognized illegitimate daughter of the Earl of Bremsford. An author.

Hero: Arthur Pennington, about 32. Nickname: Knight. Earl of Knightly.

Date: 1875 (with flashbacks to 1870)

How they meet: Knight and Regina met at her come-out ball. They became engaged, but Knight broke things off right before their wedding.

What happens: As part of her healing process, Regina anonymously wrote a steamy novel featuring a hero named “Lord K.” The novel is wildly successful, with people wondering if Lord K is modeled after Knight. Regina and Knight come face-to-face for the first time in 5 years at the card table of a gambling den. There is a bit of verbal sparring and the attraction between the two hasn’t completely gone away.

Trigger Warnings:

Verdict: I really enjoyed this book. At first I wasn’t sure about the regular flashbacks and was a little frustrated about the teases about why the relationship ended without getting answers. However, having the story build up simultaneously in present day and in the flashbacks ended up being a very effective story-telling method. I thought the hero and heroine had good chemistry, yet still remained pretty level-headed. Both were the product of complex, difficult childhoods and so were understanding of each other’s challenges. This story does not have the action-adventure elements that many of Heath’s books do. It was actually pretty sweet. This book reads just fine as a standalone although characters from other novels (this series and others) make appearances or are mentioned.

Steam-level: steamy and explicit

I really don't know what to say about this book or how to write a review.

I liked this book at times. Other times, I didn't like this book. The beginning was very slow for me; however, it did start picking up about halfway through and I started enjoying it a lot. I think my biggest issue with the story was that it was a love triangle. I've been reading a lot of love triangles in historical romance lately, and it's really not my favorite trope. I wish I enjoyed it more, but I just don't.

I did love that the FMC was an author. I loved that it was a second chance romance, and I thought the author did an amazing job with it being second chance. I really liked that the FMC was a single mom too. You really don't see a lot of single moms in historical romance, and it was nice to see it.

Knightly's character could not marry, and I wanted his reasoning/growth at the end of the book that changed this to be more significant. I felt like a switched just suddenly turned on for him and I wanted to see more of a struggle with it. If you haven't read this book, you probably won't understand what I'm talking about until you do, but just know that I wished for a little more character growth in the sense that I wanted his inner turmoil for such a significant part of the story.

Overall, I did enjoy this book. If you enjoyed the first book in this series or Lorraine Heath's writing in the past, you will most likely enjoy this one too.

I received an eARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Honestly, f*ck him! He ruined her! I don't care what anyone says but you don't do that to people you love. The shit she had to go through alone is terrible and even if he walked on his knees behind her for the entire book it wouldn't be enough! He didn't suffer enough. She forgave too soon.

*SPOILER*
He left her at the altar, destroying her reputation. She was pregnant and had to keep the baby a secret for 4 years. When he first saw his child he pretended he didn't know that she was obviously his and he was content with letting her marry another - letting some other man raise his baby. If he were a good man he would fight for them and would never let them go. F*ck him.

This felt like a return to the Lorraine Heath that I loooooove. Was it a bit ridiculous? yes. Did I see most of the ~reveals coming? also yes. Do I care? not even a little

If I read Lorraine Heath for the steam, this might have been a straight four stars. But I don’t (even though she can and has written some excellent steam), so even though the smexy times felt a little lacking, this is a solid 4.5.

I’ve seen some reviews lamenting the fact that there wasn’t enough suffering and/or groveling on the part of Knightly. I mean, sure, if you like your books with the drama and angst turned up to 11, I can see that being a good reason to mark this down. But what we got instead, I feel, was a quiet, achingly tender story of star-crossed lovers who, in the end, just couldn’t bear to be apart.

Anyway, Knightly DID suffer. We were shown that he did, and this was emphasized by Heath’s excellent job of showing the love and intimacy that existed between them before (just holding hands in the reading nook 🥰). He was forced to make the agonizing decision between abandoning the love of his life and abandoning his mother in a madhouse. I mean, what would you have done?

Regina is spitting mad at the beginning of the book — super salty and acerbic and brilliant. AND she finds it hard to keep away from him. In my opinion (and experience), those two things don’t have to be mutually exclusive.

Yes, he does keep turning up like a bad penny, which with a less tenderly drawn depiction of a couple that can’t help loving each other, I might have not liked. But again, I felt it was realistic — both that he wanted to protect her and that she didn’t resist. These two kids are just crazy in love.

Also, the way she discovers the reason he left her — she sees him comforting his mother (who Regina thought was dead) because she fears the madhouse people have come to take her away — I felt it was appropriate not to have an extended groveling scene. Would Regina, who is shown to be kind and principled and liberal in her thinking, really make it all about herself when she sees the real reason he couldn’t be with her? No. She deals with it logically and in such a mature way, and I loved it.

Other bits I loved:
- When her (their!) daughter discovers them in bed — Arthur opens his eyes and sees one big blue eye staring at him.
- The absolutely devastating moments when he has to pull out before he comes — because they both know she has to marry someone else and can’t be carrying his child when she does. 😭
- How she’s writing the sequel to her memoirs, and even though she’s trying to kill off Lord K because she’s still hurt and furious, he and the anonymous heroine always seem to end up kissing. So cute.
- Their dirty talk in the carriage flashback.
- Lovely, lovely Chidding.

In a nutshell, I found their love so believable and powerful. Lorraine Heath is just so good.

3.5🌟 this book have 2 timelines back to back before their breakup and the current. Was hoping they had more fiery reconciliation and desperation and maybe more depth how they fell in love but this was just okay for me
