This is such a successful cookbook with delicious recipes ranging from different types of bread to scrumptious dinner with side assortments as well as original dessert creations!

Impeccable pictures depict the desired outcome of the recipes. Moreover, cute family pics by Lauren Allen embellish some pages that make your heart smile! Allen approaches each recipe pragmatically indicating the ingredients and prep as well as cook time. Her short and crisp descriptions as well as tips to store leftovers resonate best with busy people who love to follow a structured cooking guide.

Absolutely fantastic cookbook that I was looking for in a while!

This is a very comprehensive and easy to follow cookbook with delectable pictures depicting the food. This would make the perfect cookbook for those who are beginner cooks or those looking for a cookbook with pictures. I found all the recipes to have easy to follow instructions. I also feel many will like that this cookbook has pictures so one could see what the finished dish will look like. I think this would motivate some to want to cook. As in "Wow, that looks amazing! I would love to try that!" and voila there is the recipe. There are 116 different recipes to choose from so one can easily find something that would like to make.

Honestly, this was pretty underwhelming for me. I thought the concept was really interesting, but basically none of the recipes here appealed to me. They all felt super basic, as if geared towards somebody who is only just getting into cooking. I already have go-to recipes for many of the meals here, and there was just something so... uninspired about what was chosen. It all felt pretty boring and bland, and the formatting didn't help much, as I didn't find it a particularly attractive or eye-catching book. I did appreciate that all of the recipes had photos, and if you're relatively new to cooking or aren't particularly adventurous when it comes to flavor combinations, then you might have more luck with this one than I did!

The use of the QR codes throughout the book was INGENIOUS! I can't believe I never thought of this being used in cook books. It's especially helpful for someone like me, as some of the codes link you to Lauren's Youtube channel and SHOWS you the process of cooking. This is super helpful for an absolute dunce in the kitchen like me!

Photography plays a huge part in how much I enjoy cookbooks and the photograph in this book was brilliant! Totally not underused, simple and beautiful. Same goes for the actual recipes, simple and easy to follow for my very simple cooking mind!

Congratulations on writing such a wonderful booK!

I picked this up because I absolutely agree with the title: things do taste better from scratch.

I'd say this would be a fair cookbook for someone just learning to cook (or who says they don't like to). The recipes are basic, and there isn't a lot that would be out of range for people who are new to or don't like cooking: familiar recipe names, nothing terribly challenging, and they'll know what it should taste like when they've finished cooking.

There are plenty of images, but unfortunately, many of them I just didn't find that good. In the Kindle edition, the images are also flattened and stretched, both in portrait and landscape view. In landscape, I found that at times, the text would be over the image, but the color of the text versus the image made the text impossible to read. Those were the descriptive parts of the recipes, but the recipes and instructions themselves were fine.

I would not recommend this for moderately skilled or advanced cooks.

Three out of five stars.

Thanks to Greenleaf Book Club and NetGalley for the reading copy.

Tastes Better From Scratch
Author: Lauren Allen

Cookbook & eARC Review
Release Date: September 27, 2022

My Rating: 4.75/5 ⭐️

What a beautiful freaking cookbook! While my version was electronic, I most definitely will be buying a hard copy for my kitchen.

First off, the recipes. They were delicious, well curated, and extremely easy to follow. So many I will be making here at home. The recipes are perfect for quick and easy meals, families on the go, or someone just wanting to branch out in the kitchen. I am looking forward to the breakfast casserole and pumpkin bread!

My next praise - the styling of the cookbook! It really was beautifully done. The color selection, font, etc. were perfect for this style of cookbook. The images were also perfect. They matched the recipes so well, were great quality, and beautifully staged. I personally loved the family photos thrown in. It gave the cookbook a more home-y, personal feel.

The last few things I want to brag on - the QR codes and the tips! This is the first time I’ve seen QR codes in a cookbook and it’s such a genius idea! Definitely gets you more bang for your buck. Additionally, the little tips on each recipe like “how to freeze”, “how to store”, and so on were very useful. In my opinion, the author really thought of everything when writing this cookbook.

I thoroughly enjoyed reviewing this cookbook! I love forward to more of her books.

Thank you NetGalley, Greenleaf Book Group, and the author for this eARC in exchange for my honest review.

Author Lauren Allen sounds like a creature from another age. She and her twin would arise early so that they could experiment in the kitchen. She helped her mother out in the kitchen from the time she was tiny. Her mother sounds more tolerant than I. The home was the fun place where everyone wanted to hang out.

When I was very young, she let me make simple things all by myself or devise cookie creations with my sister and friends. We made big messes, we were loud, and we had so much fun.

Forgive me as I shudder.

As this cookbook’s title indicates, old soul Allen is all about preparing meals from scratch; however, she’s clever enough that the resulting recipe isn’t so overwhelming as to discourage using fresh and healthy ingredients and eschewing additives and processing.

Allen has created a wonderful cookbook for beginning cooks, including all the favorites: pancakes, biscuits and gravy — both from scratch! — Spaghetti Pie, chicken noodle soup, potato wedges and more. Yes, even an experienced cook will find some gems here, but it’s mostly for newbies.

In the interest of full disclosure, I received this book from NetGalley and Greenleaf Book Group in exchange for an honest review.

I'm a self-proclaimed cookbook hoarder so I got excited to see one as a Read Now choice. This one sounded right up my alley being it is all about cooking from scratch rather than buying processed equivalents. The introductions in the beginning were nice; Typical cookbook things here like author intro, best kitchen tools and notes, etc. The chapters are laid out mostly by meal: Breakfast, Muffins and Breads, Dinner, Soup, Salads and Sides, Dessert. Each recipe page shows ingredients and instructions beside each other. The Instructions are all straightforward, simple to follow and thorough. This book appears as it will be super easy to use!

Some of my favorite things:
Each page is laid out with prep time, cook time, total time and yield right at the top of the page.
Pictures with every recipe! This is a huge positive aspect for me (as I'm sure it is with many others as well)
Love the Make ahead & Freezer tips (
A heads up for those with dietary preferences: most of the recipes don't fall in line with any specific 'diet' types. There is all-purpose flour, breads, pastas, milk, buttermilk, butter, other dairy ingredients, vegetable oils and refined sugars used throughout. For me personally, I'd have to make a lot of subs to work with these recipes but that's not going to be true for everyone. I likely won't use this cookbook in my own kitchen BUT I can appreciate how it is laid out, presented and photographed.

This will be an all-around great choice for many home cooks. I very much enjoyed flipping through all the recipes for new ideas and tips. Beautiful photos, well laid out and straightforward with a large variety of amazing-looking recipes!

Thank you to the publisher via Netgalley for the copy to read and review.

Do you love cooking? I do! But sometimes I get in a rut with my recipes I choose for dinner and honestly I am not the best at coming up with stuff on the fly. This cook book is really interesting to me and I will for sure be making some of the recipes from it. There are easy handhelds aka sandwiches and tacos, breakfast, dinner, soups, and deserts. The cool thing for me is the QR Codes in the cook book because they will take you to a video detailing the cooking for you.

A lot of the recipes are quick and easy. I love that most are not heavy with spices so that my daughter will eat them. I will be for sure enjoying this cookbook. Thank you to Lauren Allen for the #gifted digital copy.

Tastes Better From Scratch Cookbook by Lauren Allen
Finally a cookbook with food my family and I will actually eat! The recipes are not complicated, and there are lots of pictures to reference. There’s also QR codes for each recipe that leads to a video for each dish. That’s unique and very useful for sure. This is a really good everyday cookbook to add to your recipe library.

Loaded with recipes.

As with most cookbooks, there are sections in the front of the book that explain about the author and the book. This cookbook has sections on Introduction, How to Use the Book, A Few Tips for Confidence in the Kitchen, and A Word on Picky Eaters.

The recipes are divided into the following sections, and I have included an example of a recipe from that section.

Breakfast - Easy Homemade Scones
Muffins and Breads - Buttermilk Cornbread
Dinner - Chicken Gyros
Soup - Broccoli Cheese Soup
Salads and Sides - Balsamic Bread Dip
Dessert - Rolo Cookies

Each recipe includes an ingredient list, instructions, prep time, cook time, total time, and yield. In addition, where appropriate, the author includes Lauren’s tips, how to freeze, storing leftovers, make ahead, and if the recipe was for the grill, the author includes how to cook in the oven. I found the information to be valuable. I did find most of the recipes to be familiar ones, but with a few additions via the ingredients or the way it was prepared.

I made the Peach Cobbler that was included in the book. The ingredient list was simple, and the instructions were easy to understand and follow. The cobbler was delicious, and tasted better than any that I had had in a restaurant. There is definitely something to say about cooking from scratch.

With gorgeous photos of all the items, Allen shows with a minimal amount of extra effort that meals can be ever so much more delicious and healthy. The recipes are easily understood and broken down into uncomplicated steps. Not necessarily for beginners but rather for young families wanting to expand the range of their everyday meals. Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this cookbook in exchange for an honest review.

Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with a free copy to review!

The recipes in this cookbook are all very accessible and tasty looking. How do I know they look tasty? Because there are pictures of each one! Finally…an author and publisher who understands that the maxim “you eat with your eyes” exists for a reason — because it’s the truth.

The only reason why I’m not giving this 5 stars is the formatting was a bit rough. Hopefully that gets fixed on the ebook version before final printing.

This is the cookbook I've been looking for! Every single recipe is practical, not overcomplicated, family friendly, uses easily accessible ingredients, etc. There are a lot of great staples in the book - so it'd be great for someone just setting out on their own and looking for a place to start cooking. I think I'd be willing to try every single recipe in this book, which, for a cookbook, is a great asset. Lovely simple photos and minimalist design. I'm especially excited for trying out the recipes for breakfast casserole, skinny banana bread, chicken gyros, one-pan fajitas, zuppa toscana, and pumpkin cookies! I loved this cookbook!

I really, really enjoyed this cookbook from Lauren Allen! Prior to previewing this title, I wasn't familiar with Ms Allen's blog--I am quite familiar with it now, after searching out even more delectable recipes after reading the Tastes Better from Scratch Cookbook. The cookbook contains a delicious variety of menu items, both sweet and savory, and is combined with easy-to-follow instructions and lovely photography and layouts. The inclusion of QR codes for recipes was brilliant! Just a wonderfully done, solid cookbook for people to enjoy.

My thanks to NetGalley and Greenleaf Book Group for the opportunity to preview this title in exchange for my honest opinion.

Oh. My. Goodness! I could not put this book down. Not only am I so incredibly thankful I was able to receive the ARC, but I am also going to buy this in hardback as soon as I get paid, and I am going to get ones for my family members too! I know when it gave the recipes for the Buttermilk Pancakes I thought, I wonder how I could contact her about my cousin's amazing Buttermilk Syrup?!! But then, there it was! I especially loved the stories at the beginning, and Lauren, I hope I may call you Lauren, has led such an amazing life, and I was happy to feel like I was part of it. One of my favorite sections was on feeding picky eaters. I am an extremely picky eater, and my mom growing up would make different items for the different people in my family. I wish I tried more, but I just cannot at this point. But, if I am ever blessed with children, I want them to eat all kinds of foods, and will use this as a wonderful guide. This book has recipes for all types of taste buds, ages, and even diets. I am doing low carb right now, but the avocado and tomato toast would be perfect for my mom with our keto bread. I plan on making that as a surprise for her! I could eat the breakfast casserole with my low carb too! For my sister’s cookbook I am going to highlight the pumpkin bread! The mini meatloaves sound adorable, and I am going to try and see how low carb I can make it while being true to the recipe. I could go on and on about the different recipes, but I loved the stories, the little stories or tidbits before the recipes, that is always one of my favorite parts, and the stunning pictures. I also want to let Lauren know she has a beautiful family.

I want to personally thank Lauren Allen, the publisher, and Negalley for the ARC of this awesome book in exchange for an honest review!

5 Stars!! Wow! I love a good cook book especially when it has photos for each recipe and pictures of the recipes progress for each step is even better. But this book goes above and beyond with QR codes that, when scanned, take you to a video of the recipe - start to finish! Mind - BLOWN!! I’ve never seen a book have that before.
If you’re new or newish to cooking, this is definitely a must have book! I tried a few of the recipes and my family loved them.
The book starts with tips for ‘confidence in the kitchen‘ and ‘a word on picky eaters’.
After that, I came to the ‘Breakfast’ recipes. The ‘Classic French Toast’ and ‘Easy Homemade Scones’ recipes were winners, hands down. Next section is ‘Muffins and Breads’ with mouth watering recipes like ‘Perfect Cinnamon Rolls’ and ‘Pretzels’ with variations to make pretzel bites or garlic parmesan and a cheese dipping sauce recipe too! Most of the recipes include tips on how to ‘Make Ahead’, ‘Lauren’s Tips’ or ‘How to Freeze’. The ‘Dinner’ section has everything from ‘Classic Italian Lasagna’ to ‘Grilled Fish Tacos’, ‘Green Chile Chicken Enchiladas’, ‘Teriyaki Chicken Stirfry‘ and ‘One Pan Jambalaya’ are just a few of the yummy looking recipes you’ll find in this book. The next section is ‘Soup’ and has ‘Corn Chowder’, ‘Chicken Tortilla Soup’, ‘Creamy Tomato Basil Soup’ and something called ‘Zuppa Toscana’, just to name a few. ‘Salads and Sides’ is the next section and has delicious recipes like ‘Artichoke Dip‘, ‘Gourmet Mac and Cheese’ and ‘Cowboy Caviar’. Last but not least is my favorite section - ‘Dessert’! ‘Perfect Pie Crust’, ‘Caramel Popcorn’, ‘S’mores Bars’ and ‘Salted Caramel Rice Krispies’ are a few of my favorites. So many delicious recipes and I can’t wait to try all of them! I definitely recommend this book! Yum yum in my tum tum!!

What's not to like about this book??!! As soon as I saw the name and the cover I knew it was going to be a winner...and indeed it is! I love the intro chapters where we see inside the author and her drive behind developing this cookbook. I love that she has included "how to freeze" with her recipes...because that is always the part that I question "is it able to be frozen?" "what's the best way to freeze/thaw/use?" The pictures are beautiful and draw the eye to the recipe. The QR code is also a great addition to the cookbook - as seeing how to do something often makes the task so much easier! Great job....can't wait to get this book on my shelf! Thank you to NetGalley and Greenleaf Book Group for the opportunity to read and review this advance reader copy. YUMMMMM!

This cookbooks is full of delicious looking recipes and the best part is they look simple to make! With limited time as a busy mom, I appreciate easy, family-friendly food. There are pictures of each dish, which I greatly appreciate. I made the Rolo cookies this weekend for a few parties and they were a hit!

Logistics:
-There’s helpful make ahead and freezing tips
-116 recipes; breakfast, muffins/breads, dinner, soup, sides/salads, and dessert
-There are photos of each dish
-QR codes that link to a video that shows how to make the recipe

I can’t wait to try out more of these recipes!! I will definitely be buying a hard copy of this book.

Tastes Better From Scratch is THE cookbook you want to gift for this holiday season! I love this little gem! The book features 116 beautifully photographed recipes. Lauren offers make-ahead suggestions, substitutions, and freezer tips and provides a QR code for each recipe that links to a how-to video - brilliant!

All recipes I tested were easy to follow, used staple ingredients, and completed in the allotted prep/cooking time listed at the top of each recipe. I make this point because, too often, a recipe says 45 min prep/cooking time, and an hour and 30 mins later, we are finally eating. Personally, I don't need that added stress while cooking during the week. So thank you for your accuracy!

This cookbook looks absolutely wonderful. I've not had an opportunity make any of the recipes yet but I have a list of many that I look forward to trying. This cook book offers recipes for the entire meal. There are main courses, sides, appetizers, soups, breakfasts, desserts and more. The recipes use ingredients that aren't difficult to find. I also enjoy that there are pictures for many recipes and tips on freezIng, time to prepare, etc.. It's a very user friendly cookbook and one I believe I'll refer to frequently.

There is a qr code located with each recipe which is a fun refreshing idea. There are also links and several tips and tricks throughout to help you even more to fit the food to your own tastes.
I definitely recommend this book to anyone.

A very attractive cookbook with gorgeous pictures accompanying every recipe. There are clear, complete instructions and great tips for things like how to cook by alternate methods (e.g. grilling v. cooking in the oven), how to make it ahead, and how to freeze the completed dish. There is a range of types of food, from standard classics to ethnic food. .Highly recommended! Many thanks to NetGalley and Greenleaf Book Group for an e-ARC of this lovely book!
