Francesca Eve, chef, caterer, and baker extraordinaire, has never desired the limelight. But when she’s accepted onto the country’s favourite cooking competition, she can’t help but wonder – what would it be like to win? The one thing she’d never imagined, though, was sharing the kitchen with a killer…
When Francesca Eve arrives for the Christmas special of the country’s most popular baking competition, she knows she’s out of her depth. For not only is she there undercover, reluctantly investigating strange threats to Miranda Appleby, the famous presenter-come-chef, but she swiftly gets roped into competing herself when another contestant can’t cut the mustard and quits.
Cooking may be bread and butter to Fran, but under the bright lights her cranberry sauce won’t set and her mince pies burn. When the real reason she’s there ends in total failure and Miranda is found with a cake slice through the heart - ‘lights, camera, cook’ becomes ‘lights, camera, murder…’
Miranda may have looked like butter wouldn’t melt in her mouth, but looks can be deceiving… From her harassed PA to the rakish producer and even the disappointed contestants, everyone on set seemingly had reason enough to want to bump her off. But who would be nuts enough to cook Miranda’s goose in such an obvious way?
As the police arrive to take over the investigation, Fran can’t help but continue her own lines of enquiry. She’s come to know the crew and contestants and can’t believe that any one of them would be guilty. But Fran must harden her heart to her new friends and focus her mind.
Someone may have thought Miranda was justifiably given her just desserts, but what Fran uncovers takes things to a whole new tier. Can Fran uncover the truth before another death occurs, and before the spirit of Christmas (cake) is ruined forever?
Emma Davies once applied for her dream job in the following manner;
'I am a bestselling novelist currently masquerading as a thirty something mother of three.' Well she's now a forty something mother of three, and is working on the rest.
By day she's a finance manager and looks at numbers a lot of the time, but by night she gets to use actual words and practices putting them together into sentences. Her twitter bio says she loves her family, her job, reading, writing, singing loudly in the car, and Pringles, so that must be true then.
Wave to her on twitter @Emdavies68
Letting in Light is her debut novel, and she is currently working on her second.
This is the fourth book in this excellent series. In it we find Francesca Eve and her young friend Adam acting 'undercover' on behalf of DCI Helen Bradley. They are trying to discover who is threatening Miranda Appleby, the famous chef and presenter of a popular TV show called Country Cooks Cook. There is a murder, Fran ends up as a participant in the show, and the mystery is a little bit Agatha Christie like in its solution.
I enjoy the two main characters in this series. Adam gets a larger role than usual in solving this murder as Fran is frequently engaged in cooking for the show. There are many possible characters with motives for murder but all of them have perfect alibis - or do they? Red herring after red herring keeps the readers interest in the story right up to the very last line. And did that last line suggest a romantic interest for Adam? That would be nice. Roll on the next book.
I listened to the audiobook ‘Death at Beresford Hall’. This book is a great cozy mystery that takes place while filming a Christmas Cooking competition. All Is good until someone has ended up dead and the hunt for a killer begins. There is a great cast of characters and it kept me guessing until the end.
The audiobook was an easy listening book. It kept my interest until the end. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good cozy mystery.
Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for an opportunity to review.
This is an enjoyable cozy mystery, which is about a woman called Fran who goes undercover at a Christmas cooking competition, to investigate threats made to Miranda Appleby. Unfortunately, Miranda gets murdered, but Fran continues with her investigation, trying to find out who the murderer is. Her friend Adam assists her in this mission.
I enjoyed the story, and the whole setup, as well as the wonderful audiobook narrator. I found the book to be fun, lighthearted, and easy to read, and I enjoyed learning more about what cooking shows are like behind the scenes.
This is a new author for me, and I will be sure to look out for more of her books.
Many thanks to the author/narrator, publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this book.
Francesca Eve and Adam have worked well together in the past. They met while Fran was catering a luncheon for his mother. Not only does Adam now lend a hand with the various catering jobs Fran accepts, the pair are proving to be more than adept when it comes to solving murders. Being called to her latest job is mainly due to Fran’s reputation. Currently, a popular baking competition is being filmed for the holidays. A famous chef named Miranda Appleby has been receiving dangerous threats and she hopes that Fran can get to the bottom of things.
Before Fran and Adam can discover what is happening, one of the competitors quits, and Fran is thrust even further into everything going on. She is pressured to being one of the show’s contestants. Them Miranda is found dead, thus leaving credence to the threats she had been receiving. However…the show must go on. With Fran still cooking for the competition, Adam takes more of a role as amateur sleuth in the midst of everything going on around them. As a lover of this series, it was a real treat to watch Adam as he steps up. He was a shy young man who had been living a quiet life of solitude. Now, his tech savvy skills really come into play, as well as his sharp intuition. Fran and Adam make an excellent team, no matter who appears in charge.
While this story offers a behind-the-scenes look at cooking shows, I certainly hope that it is just pure fiction, as these shows are one of my guilty pleasures. With this book and setting, lies, secrets, backstabbing and betrayal apparently underscore everything happening on and off screen. Then, with Miranda’s murder having taken place, the tension never once lets up. This latest installment in this delightful series by Emma Davies was really an excellent read.
Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
Review for 'Death At Beresford Hall' by Emma Davies.
Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous
Publication date 7th December 2022.
This is the sixth book I have read by this author. It is also the fourth book in her 'Adam And Eve Mystery Series' but can be read as a standalone. I have previously read 'A Year At Appleyard Farm', 'The Little Island Secret', 'My Husband's Lie', 'After The Crash', 'Death In Disguise' (First book in the 'Adam And Eve Mystery Series') and 'Death On The Menu (Third Book in the' Adam And Eve Mystery Series') and would recommend them all!!
I was originally drawn to this book by its beautiful eye catching cover and its intriguing synopsis. I am a huge fan of Emma and if this book is half as good as 'A Year At Appleyard Farm', 'The Little Island Secret', 'My Husband's Lie', After The Crash', 'Death On The Menu' and 'Death In Disguise' it is bound to be an epic read!! The synopsis stated that this book is 'An utterly gripping cozy crime mystery set at a Christmas cooking competition. This is perfect for fans of Faith Martin, M.C. Beaton and The Thursday Murder Club. .' I am a huge fan of Faith Martin so am interested to see if it will live up to this statement. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).
This novel consists of 23 chapters. The chapters are medium to long in length so possible to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!
This book is based in Shropshire, England 🏴 , UK 🇬🇧. The bonus for me of books that are partly or fully based in the UK is that I live in the UK and have sometimes visited places mentioned in the book which makes it easier to picture. I have actually visited and stayed in Shropshire so am looking forward to seeing if I recognise any places mentioned in the book.
This book is written in third person perspective with the main protagonists being Francesca Eve and Adam Smith. The benefits of third person perspective with multiple protagonists are that it let's you see the bigger picture of what's going on and you get to know more characters more, what they are thinking and what they are doing. It feels like you get to see the whole picture and not miss out in anything.
WOW!!! JUST WOW!!! YET ANOTHER ADDICTIVE ADDITION TO THE FANTASTIC 'ADAM AND EVE' SERIES!! I LOVE HOW YOU CAN JUMP FROM GENRE TO GENRE ABSOLUTELY PERFECTLY AND WHETHER IT IS A ROMANCE, WOMEN'S FICTION OR MURDER MYSTERY YOU SLAM DUNK IT EVERY TIME AND THIS BOOK IS NO EXCEPTION!!!
Another huge success by Emma Davies!!! This book is beautifully written and filled with vivid descriptions to the point where I can hear the trees rustling in the wind and taste Frank's divine dishes while curled up on the sofa reading. The cover and synopsis suit the storyline perfectly.
LOVE, LOVE, LOVED IT!!! AN ABSOLUTELY GRIPPING COSY MYSTERY!!!!
I must admit that I had no idea what to expect when I started reading this fantastic series when I read 'Death In Disguise' but I will start by repeating that you Emma are a lady of many talent! The first book of yours that I fell in love with was 'My Husband's Lie' which was a psychological fiction filled with mystery and suspense, I then read 'A year at Applewood farm' which was filled with romance, I moved onto 'The Little Island Secret ' which was a gorgeous romantic holiday fiction and the last book I read by you was 'After The Crash' which was a romantic mystery. I then moved onto the first in this series 'Death In Disguise, somehow I think I may have missed' Death On The Dinner Plate', read 'Death On The Menu' and now I have just finished this absolutely addictive page turner and yet again you have outshone yourself!! Does your talent have no boundaries? Not many people can jump from one genre to another and even less do it well but you have done an absolutely fantastic job Emma!!!! Congratulations and I am looking forward to your next successful surprise!!
The storyline is absolutely addictive starting off with the perfect atmosphere for a cosy mystery being a treasure hunt after the death of an author!! A unique and perfectly fitting start for an murder mystery!! This is most definitely one the best cosy murder mysteries I have ever read!!! It was filled with murder, suspense, mystery, humour and rammed full of red herrings!! What more could you ever ask for in a cosy mystery? This book is perfect to read curled up by a fire or relaxing on a beach. There were so many different red herrings and different leads that Emma took me down and I enjoyed solving the puzzles and clues along with Fran and Adam. I would never have worked out who the killer was so a MASSIVE CONGRATULATIONS to Emma for managing to surprise me. I have read several books by authors who have only ever written mysteries and yet have worked out the whodunit by 50% in some which is a pet hate for me. However, you normally write romance novels and amazing ones at that, and yet managed to completely shock me!!! I also loved how everything was explained and tied up as another pet hate of mine is when a piece of the puzzle is mentioned then seemingly forgotten and never spoken of again. Emma, I absolutely LOVED this book which is an absolutely, perfectly explosive addition to what has promised to be an absolutely epic new series!!! I would LOVE to see this book, well this whole series turned into a movie which is sure to be a huge hit. Keep up the amazing work and I cannot wait for your next success whether it's another romance or the fourth part in this fantastic series!!
Although this is the fourth book in the series reader's would have absolutely no problems reading it without the others. Any details or events that have previously happened are mentioned in just the right amount of detail to let a new reader know what has happened and yet not too much to bore a previous reader.
I absolutely love Fran and was over the moon to meet her again!!! When I started this series and I realised that she was a 50 year old caterer I did not know what to expect but straight away her personality lit up like a lighthouse. She made me laugh until I had tears streaming down my face. I can't remember the last time a character made me laugh so much! She is such a realistic character that jumps out of the pages and who is smart, caring and intriguing. The fact that this was a cosy murder mystery was even better as she definitely made it lighter than most I have read. She is such a larger than life and bubbly character who says it as it is, doesn't take any crud and has the most gorgeous personality. She is friendly, knows what to says who to trust and the fact that she swears now and again makes her my perfect cup of tea!! Fran is definitely the type of woman I would want by my side whether I wanted to laugh, cry or have a 5 course meal. I immediately clicked with her after the first few pages of 'Death In Disguise' and she hasn't left my mind since. The second I started reading this book it felt like I had only just finished saying Goodbye to her as qshe materialised in front of me again. I am happy to say that the same went with Adam who was nervous, funny and minced his words. They are complete opposites who made the perfect team. Again, neither knew each other previously when they first met yet they hit it off straight away and they work just as well together in this book as they did the first. They make one of the best teams I have ever met!! They make a perfect pairing and I cannot wait to meet them both again. They are most certainly the type of characters whose personalities stay with you for a long time and I've already started missing them... Hint hint Emma 😉
DO NOT PICK THIS BOOK UP UNTIL YOU HAVE CLEARED YOUR SCHEDULES AS YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PUT IT DOWN! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED ⚠!!
Yet one more HUGE CONGRATULATIONS Emma on the best cosy mystery series I have ever read and I am impatiently waiting for the next success in this series!!
Overall an absolutely addictive, hilarious, fun, light hearted cosy mystery which will keep you up until 2am turning the pages
Genres covered in this novel include Murder Mystery, Cozy Culinary Mystery, Cozy Mystery, Cozy Crafts & Hobbies Mystery, Women Sleuths, Cozy Animal Mystery and Crime Fiction amongst others.
I would recommend this book to the fans of the above as well as FANS of Agatha Christie, Clare Chase, Helena Dixon, Martin, M.C. Beaton, 'The Thursday Murder Club' and anyone who loves an amazing cosy mystery and especially you reading this!! .
333 pages/8 hours and 29 minutes
This book is just £1.99 to purchase on kindle, £16 for audiobook and £8.99 in paperback on Amazon at time of review, which I think is an absolute bargain for this book!!!
Rated 5/5 (I LOVED it ) on Goodreads, Instagram, Amazon UK and Amazon US and on over 30 Facebook pages plus my blog on Facebook.
Feel free to add me on Goodreads or follow me on my website or Facebook for more reviews
I was very interested and excited to receive this ARC from author Emma Davies, NetGallery, and the publisher, Bookouture Audio. Thank you for this audio, my preferred form of reading since pre-COVID. I haven't given up purchasing beautiful books or building my library! The narrator Mira Dovreni was fantastic and I'd probably enjoy any audio read by her. Note to GR: There isn't a category on Goodreads for an audiobook so it goes down as a Kindle book.
In the beginning, the characters are so lively and interesting in this cosy little mystery, which involves a televised cooking competition during the holidays before Christmas. A very beloved and famous female chef, Miranda Appleby, is heading it up, along with her producer, savvy, but ill-treated and over-worked, assistant Midge (I kept thinking they said MITCH on audio - lol), and of course included contestants, and other hardworking crew. We didn't learn much about the food itself or the other contestants, except the one who dropped out unfortunately. I did love learning about the production however and I was ready and in for this! I love food and watching cooking shows so this appealed to me in many ways. I used to watch Martha Stewart, Ina Garten, Julia Child, Nigella, and many others....
Publisher's Blurb: "Francesca/FRAN Eve, chef, caterer, and baker extraordinaire, has never desired the limelight. But when she’s accepted onto the country’s favourite cooking competition, she can’t help but wonder – what would it be like to win? The one thing she’d never imagined, though, was sharing the kitchen with a killer…" (Not entirely true....)
My note: Fran is hired privately and in secret by Miranda and her producer to find out who is leaving Miranda threatening/nasty notes and awful gifts. Soon Fran and her male assistant arrive on the set (undercover) under the pretense of researching Miranda's work life so they can write a memoir about her, when a contestant suddenly drops out of the competition due to pressure and stagefright. Fran is asked to "step in" as a contestant. If she doesn't go along with this, the whole production will fall apart and much money, fans, and reputation rides on this... Much tension!
For the first half, I was totally into it and couldn't wait to find out the background info of who is after Miranda, as well as more about each character and the contestants (and food!!). Then there's a murder....and thereafter it seems to lose momentum and becomes chaotic, full of bickering and pitting each other against each other. I found it no longer held my interest unfortunately. There also wasn't much going on in the dialogue other than repetitive complaining, accusing, whining, and fighting. I found myself wanting it to end and I am rarely negative about a good mystery; I am sad for the drawn out chaos and drama, which didn't hold up to the exciting beginning.
I am a fan of Emma Davies and am grateful for the ARC.
This book’s saving grace for me was the fictional “ inside look” at a TV cooking competition.
As someone who has watched scores of hours of Holiday Baking Championships, I enjoyed the imagined “ reality” of what it was like to participate in one. And, I was stimulated by the suggestion that there were some aspects to these contests that were less than “ fair competition.”
But, that said, this was the most basic of cozy mysteries. Characters were ‘t very interesting, dialogue was mundane, and, in the end I wasnt too interested in anything about the book.
I fully realize that every piece of light fiction doesnt need to exquisitely written, or particularly memorable. But, even as light entertainment, this was way too much on the light side to really entertain me.
I continue to be impressed by the ability of Emma Davies to be so prolific and yet continue to produce high quality, carefully plotted cosy mysteries without descending into the disappointing cheesiness that afflicts so many examples of this genre.
"Death at Beresford Hall" is the fourth book in this wonderfully engaging series. Shropshire-based caterer, Francesca Eve returns with her young amateur sleuthing sidekick, Adam Smith and on this occasion they find themselves embroiled in a mystery in a setting that has a distinctly "Great British Bake Off" feel about it, but entitled "Country Cooks Cook". The star of the show is the successful celebrity chef, Miranda Appleby. (As an aside, it is fun surmising which real-life personality she may have been based upon.) Having already been engaged by Miranda to look into the source of some unwanted "presents" she has been receiving, Fran & Adam find themselves at the centre of a far more serious investigation when Miranda is murdered while the show is being made.
As with the earlier books in this series, Emma Davies has created a story that is not only entertaining, but also has a perfectly sound murder mystery at its heart. If you are new to the series then "Death at Beresford Hall" could be read as a standalone and be enjoyable enough, but I would suggest that potential readers would derive even more from the experience if they were already familiar with the two lead characters. Although the plot here is not directly related to either of the previous books, there are some references to those earlier mysteries that could be construed as very mild spoilers, if you were to go back and read them afterwards.
I have no hesitation in recommending this to fans of the genre. I will certainly be back for book five in the series and I also hope that a production company picks this up and brings it to our television screens. I firmly believe that this would work far better than some other cosy mystery series that have already made that transition.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for supplying an ARC in return for an honest review.
A must for all fans of the Great British Bake Off! And with a festive twist, Contestants on a bakery show compete to bake to win, but the death of the main presenter throws a spanner in the works.. could one of the contestants be the murderer? Or one of the crew …?
I was completely immersed in this audiobook and had honestly no idea ‘whodunnit’. I was kept guessing with all the twists and turns and the whole plot set up made for great reading. It was super entertaining and I loved the baking element of it. Real GBBO vibes with an added touch of murder…
I liked the two main characters as they were placed amongst the show to find out who had been leaving ominous little ‘gifts’ to the star of the show. They were tasked with getting to the bottom of this mystery when suddenly there was a bigger drop at play.
I didn’t realise this was number four in a series but I didn’t feel at a disadvantage. The author did a great job at ensuring I got the measure of all the characters and was caught up on anything that had importance to the story. All in all, it was great and thoroughly enjoyed!
Thank you to the author and publisher for this book on NetGalley in return for my honest thoughts and review.
If you’re a fan of murder mysteries and The Great British Bake Off, then this is the perfect book for you!
I really enjoyed listening to this one! There were so many twists and turns, that I kept going back and forth on deciding who I thought the culprit was.
It was definitely interesting how each person definitely could’ve potentially been the culprit, and you’re definitely nudged along to believe it was specific people…but of course you know it can’t be them, so you start trying to wreck your brain on who ACTUALLY is to blame.
Overall, this was definitely fun. It followed the classic stereotypes of what I expect from murder mysteries, kept me taking wild guesses the whole time, and had me questioning myself at every turn. It’s a good thing I’m not an actual detective cause lord knows I’d be all over the place with the clues at hand!
Loved it! The dynamic between the leads is one we don't usually see and I really appreciated it. I enjoyed the friendship between Fran and Adam enough that I am excited to go back and read the rest of the books in this series.
As a new reader to the Adam and Eve Mystery series, I liked that I didn't feel at all left out by the fact I hadn't read the first 3 books. Nor did I feel constantly hit over the head by the author with "catch me up" tidbits. The past stories showed up in organic and reasonable ways that made sense.
This was a great read for a cozy mystery fan. It was cozy enough without being too cutesy, and the mystery was interesting without being too obvious. I enjoyed it from start to finish
I don't read a lot of cozy mysteries but this was a really fun read.
Adam and Fran, civilians who have solved several murders, have been asked by police to infiltrate a cooking competition show whose host is getting anonymous, vaguely threatening notes and "presents".
Since Fran has a catering business, she's a natural fit for this assignment. When one of the contestants leaves suddenly, Fran ends up replacing her and juggling cooking and crime solving. Unfortunately, the investigation has barely started when Miranda, the beloved star of the show (the victim of the harassment) is murdered.
There is a big cast of suspects but it's not hard to keep track.
I picked this one up without realizing that it's number 4 in a series. I generally love a good cozy mystery, especially on a dreary day. However, this one was too generic for me. There was nothing wrong with it - it's a perfectly good cozy mystery. Unfortunately, there isn't anything that really stands out about it either. The narration was solid if you're looking for an easy audiobook.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for this ARC.
I was give. A chance to listen to this audiobook thanks to NetGalley, and I could t be more pleased. I was in a book slump, Death at Beresford Hall was just what I needed to refresh my reading/listening! When I initially saw the cover art I thought the book looked intriguing. Then I read the description and found that the show took place at a cooking competition in Great Britain. If there are two things I love, they are mysteries and cooking shows…especially a certain popular cooking contest that takes place in Britain! I found the mystery to be well plotted with many suspects to keep you guessing! An added bonus is that this book is number 4 in a series! I am looking forward to reading the first three. Though it is part of a series, it could be read as a stand alone as well! Grab a copy! You won’t be sorry!
Death at Beresford Hall by Emma Davies Narrated by: Mira Dovreni is the Forth book in the brilliant Adam and Eve Mystery Series and I have really enjoyed these books especially as I love cosy mysteries and they're a easy quick read which is great for holidays etc. They have all been a well written, well narrated whodunit I love loved them.
What a perfect cozy, Christmas mystery! This is my first book in this series and it won’t be my last.
To start, I don’t think you need to have read the previous 3 books in this series. I felt like I knew what was going on reading this as a stand alone book.
“Death at Beresford Hall,” centers around a celebrity chef who is getting death threats so an undercover detective is sent in, disguised as an author, to try to find out if it could be someone on her show. (Think Great British Baking Show!) The show has just started filming its Christmas competition when the celebrity chef is murdered. So who did it? Was it a PA? A producer? One of the contestants!? With a lot of red herrings this book gives Agatha Christie vibes, and is such a fun read for this time of year!
Thank you to NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Welcome to The Great British Bake Off meets MIss Marple ! This is a gently, cosy mystery set amid a cooking competition, similar to TGBBO. Fran is undercover with her sidekick Adam, trying to investigate threats made against the show's star, in the guise of "behind the scenes" writers. Things quickly take a turn for the worse as one of the competitors pulls out before filming has begun and Fran has to take her place. Soon after proceedings begin, the star of the show is found dead and the killer must be one of the competitors and crew - there are many to choose from! A lovely listen for wet afternoons with knitting and hot chocolate and I'll look out for more in the series.
Death at Beresford Hall is the 4th Adam & Eve cozy cooking mystery by Emma Davies. Released 7th Dec 2022, it's 333 pages and is available in paperback, audio, and ebook formats. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links and references throughout. I've really become enamored of ebooks with interactive formats lately. For Kindle Unlimited subscribers, the whole series is currently included in the KU subscription library to borrow and read for free.
This is a fun and engaging cozy series. The author is experienced at her craft and quite adept at plotting and characterization. The mystery itself is well engineered and the clues are all "fair-play" and revealed slowly throughout the narrative. I was really engaged from the start with caterer Fran (her surname is Eve), and her erstwhile sidekick/young friend Adam, the socially awkward son of a former catering client. I found it charming and refreshing that they *are* friends and there's zero romance and never a hint of hanky-panky between Adam (he's 20something) and Fran (who's 40something and happily married).
This installment sees Fran entering a cooking show held in a stately home after another contestant suddenly quits, leaving a vacancy. Fran (and Adam) are really there undercover to investigate a series of ugly incidents aimed at the show's celebrity host, Miranda. When Miranda exits stage left, violently, with a cake slicer to the heart, it's up to Fran & co to get to the bottom of the murder without getting -eliminated- themselves. It's a holiday themed cozy set in a stately home and is enjoyable for those reasons alone, but Fran's talent at ferreting out secrets and motives make it a compelling read.
The unabridged audiobook has a run time of 8 hours and 29 minutes and is expertly narrated by Mira Dovreni. Ms. Dovreni has a classically trained, well modulated voice and does a good job with the wide range of characters of both sexes and ages. I found her accent unobtrusive after a few minutes. It was easy to concentrate on the story.
The language is clean (PG rated) and the violence is mostly off-scene. It's perfectly safe for work/commute reading and the resolution and denouement are well written and satisfying. Spelling and vernacular are British English, but won't present any problems at all for (American) readers in context. With four excellent books extant in the series, it would be a good choice for a long weekend binge read. The mysteries are all self contained, so they can be read in any order, but are best in the order written.
Four and a half stars. Very fun.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
This series keeps getting better and better. It was a delight to see young Adam, who once hid in a closet to avoid meeting people, take a major role in this installment. Fran, aka the Eve of the title, Francesca Eve, is roped into participating in a cooking show, giving her less time to devote to the issue at hand. Although it started with Fran and Adam responding to Detective Nell's request that they do some investigating of the delivery of disturbing gifts to the show's hostess, it evolves into a murder investigation when Miranda Appleby, face of the cooking show, is killed. Who killed Miranda? Why? Who had the time, motive, and opportunity to kill Miranda?
Adam frequently finds himself on his own. True, he spends a quality amount of that time in the kitchen scarfing down whatever Beresford Hall's friendly, chatty cook puts in front of him, but that doesn't mean his mind isn't in overdrive. His ability to think outside the box, matched with Fran's observational skills, face a real challenge. Toss in the Fran is discovering that the raised adrenaline rush of cooking in front of cameras during a set time span and, well, she isn't quite as able to focus as usual. Far from being the benign, fun cooking show expected, they're suddenly faced with an array of suspects, some with secrets they'd just as rather remain hidden. The show has a few secrets it'd prefer remain unknown, too.
Nope, not revealing any more of the plot. I will note that we get to see more of the human side of Nell, taxed with solving the case quickly, as well as how much she genuinely feels for those she seems to scare senseless when interrogating them. We also get an interesting look at the unreality of reality show such as this cooking competition. Let's just say, what viewers see isn't always exactly what happened, when. Bottom line, I was impressed by Fran's composure under pressure and Adam's growth from the beginning of the series until now. I mean, he's helped ascertain whether that dead body is really dead, a first for him, and is relying more on observation than his usual gadgets although, okay, there is that one time....no, nope, not telling. You're going to have to read the book.
Thanks #NetGalley and #Bookouture for inviting me back to Adam and Fran/Eve's world again. I'm looking forward revisiting soon.
Francesca Eve is so happy the Christmas season has arrived. She has been selected as a participant in a baking competition. Shortly after her arrival, trouble is brewing. Miranda Appleby, the famous presenter turned chef is receiving some peculiar and unusual threats. And when a contest unexpectedly quits the competition, Miranda jumps in to fill the empty spot. Fran has problems of her own when her mince pies burn and not to mention her runny cranberry sauce. Fran finds Miranda in the kitchen with a cake slice through her heart. Who would do such a horrible thing and, at what is supposed to be the most wonderful time of the year. Who could the murderer possibly be? Is it the contestants, the crew or the producers themselves? The police arrive and take over the investigation and everyone is a suspect, and no one is allowed to leave. But Fran begins her own investigation of the suspects, knowing that she has to find the culprit before it’s too late.
This was such a fabulous addition to the Adam and Eve Mystery Series. The setting of this story was brilliant. I love the idea of a Christmas cooking competition and haveing to solve a murder. I loved the twists and turns of the story and I was so captivated by the characters. They were so quirky and I could not figure out who-dun-it. I liked all the characters and I didn’t want any of them to be the culprit. This rapid and festive read was so entertaining and a rapid page-turner that I thoroughly enjoyed. I was completely surprised at the ending as it was totally unexpected. What a wonderful escape this book was. This installment to the series can be enjoyed as part of the series or as a stand-alone novel. I highly recommend this must read for every cozy mystery fan. It is a lovely series.
Thank you Emma Davies for a wonderful addition to the series. This cozy mystery was an absolute delight. I loved it and I highly recommend it.
I really enjoy this series. It's fresh, packed with mystery and, above all else, just great fun. Adam and Fran are two absolutely fabulous characters you cannot help enjoying spending time with, and, I can't lie, the fact that is it set in an area very, very local to me, really adds that little something special to the stories. Yes, some of the locations are made up (with good reason), but that familiarity that comes with the overall setting and the humour and smiles that are generated from reading about Adam's youthful enthusiasm and Fran's down to earth and sensible approach to crime fighting make settling down with one of these books a real treat.
Death at Beresford Hall is another absolute corker. All of these mysteries have ties back to food and catering - it is Fran's career after all, and the precursor to how the two protagonists met - but never more so than with this latest offering. For once, Fran and Adam are exactly where they are meant to be - right in the middle of a very perplexing case. TV personality and cookery competition presenter, MIranda Appleby, has been receiving some very troubling 'gifts' and Fran and Adam have been asked to 'go undercover' on the set of the Christmas episode which is being filmed in their home county to try and get to the bottom of what is going on. When events turn deadly, the amateur sleuths find themselves caught right bang in the middle of yet another murder investigation without only one problem. Everyone but one of the people involved in the production, Miranda's assistant, Mdge, has the perfect alibi, and yet they know in their hearts that Midge cannot possibly be guilty. Or can she?
With shades of "Bake Off" this is an absolutely fabulous little mystery. There is a finite pool of suspects once again, but with each contestant and crew member providing each other with the perfect alibi, it does make things a little difficult for Fran and Adam in find out who is really guilty. Add to this the fact that Fran winds up as an unexpected contestant on the show and it falls to Adam to do some digging on his own. I love the pairing of Fran and Adam. It is so unconventional, not just because of the age gap between them, but it really does work. They bounce off of each other, and they are tuned into the mysteries in a way which feels real and believable. And with their kind and warm personalities, you can easily see them winning the confidence of others and getting to the heart of the matter.
Emma Davies has done a great job of creating the characters in this book, and capturing the essence of what we all, no doubt, imagine it is really like on the set of Bake Off. We have people it is easy to get to like, Midge being one of them, and others who are perhaps a little less palatable - the victim included. There are secrets abound around set and just where you think you have the measure of someone, the author springs a little surprise that catches you unawares, in a way that is really effective. Did I have my suspicions about the guilty party? Well, yes, but I didn't guess everything about what happened and how. The clues are there, and if you pay attention, you'll guess them too. But the beauty of this series is not necessarily trying to out guess Fran and Adam, but seeing just how they are going to unveil the wrongdoer and watching the mystery unfurl. I enjoy the journey every bit as much as the destination.
Despite this being a story about a TV cookery competition, for once I didn't finish the book ravenously hungry. First time in a while for an Emma Davies book, let me tell you. But I did finish it quickly - read in one afternoon because the pacing is spot on and the mystery pitched just right. Time really does fly when you read this book, and not just for the contestants trying hard to get their delicious delicacies complete in time for judging! This is just such an enjoyable read that fans of cosy crime will eat it up (no pun intended). An absolutely perfect way to spend a Saturday afternoon and far more drama than watching a Bake-off showstopper slide off its cake stand. Recommended.
Another adventure for this unlikely pair Initially undercover to investigate but they need to take care! On the set of a Christmas special baking competition and show At least Fran knows how that should go!
The star has received strange gifts that may be threats But no notes, or clues as yet. However, when a contestant quits, Fran's skills are required But the limelight is never something she's desired.
When the star is murdered, the police join in There's no way they want the killer to win. With so many cooks and not many clues How can they make sure the killer will lose?
As Fran cooks, Adam is on the case Trying to sort out who was in the wrong place. So many suspects with alibis for each other But just what is wrong, they need to discover.
A fascinating read with this sleuthing pair This time working at the behest of the police so all is fair. Can they discover the perpetrator of the deed? To find out for yourself you need this book to read!
I really enjoyed this disparate pair An odd couple but they really do care. There are secrets, discoveries and more to be uncovered Before the killer can finally be discovered!
Piecing the clues together so they make sense Not jumping to conclusions - or sitting on the fence. The ingredients are there for a tasty treat Can you solve the case too, or will you admit defeat?
For my complementary copy of this book, I say thank you, A brilliant cosy mystery I highly recommend in this, my honest review.
Death at Beresford Hall is the 4th in the Adam and Eve series. It worked okay as a stand-alone, but I think I would have benefitted from knowing a bit more about Fran and Adam and their previous cases. We’re kind of dropped in the middle of the action. Fran is undercover at a cooking show tv competition, posing as a writer gathering “behind the scenes” info about the show, with Adam there to assist. The show’s star, Miranda Appleby, has been receiving threatening gifts and Fran and Adam are charged with finding out who is doing it. Things turn more complicated when Miranda manipulates Fran into stepping in as a contestant on the show. Then, of course, Miranda ends up murdered, killed with a cake knife.
The “behind the scenes” peek at a reality cooking show was fun. There’s plenty of jealousy and backstabbing and secrets. The clues were tucked in well, with several red herrings and enough suspects to keep me guessing. Fran and Adam are an interesting team. They don’t seem to have much in common, aside from their crime-solving, but they get along well, each bringing their own skills and outlook.
I listened to the audio. I really enjoy audiobooks since they let me get other, less fun stuff done while I’m reading – like dishes (our dishwasher is broken). The narrator did a good job with the voices and it was easy to keep the characters straight.
Overall, this was a fun, light read. And I liked the Christmas touches, even if it took place months earlier than December.
Death at Beresford Hall by Emma Davies, narrated by Mira Dovreni is the fourth in the Adam and Eve Mystery Series. Francesca Eve, who owns a catering business, has a knack for ferreting out the truth and finding answers. Accompanied by her trusty sidekick Adam, Fran is engaged by the police to keep an eye on the star of a holiday cooking contest while posing as an author doing research for a new book. Once she arrives on set, she is drafted to replace a contestant who drops out. When the star of the show is murdered, Fran is not sure who can be trusted or if she will be next.
I listened to the audio version of this book and loved the narrator. She had a smooth yet compelling voice that portrayed each character with depth and skill. The narrator can make or break an audiobook, and this one definitely made the book. I will definitely look for other books that she narrates.
The peek behind the scenes of the reality cooking show was fun and interesting. Everything was so realistically described that I felt as though I was on set! The supporting characters and suspects were complex and true-to-life - some quirky, others neurotic or just grumpy. But there was no end to the suspect list With a well-written cozy, it’s always the person you least suspect, and this one did not disappoint! (I reviewed an advance reader copy and all opinions are my own.) This was a delightful cozy that had me engaged until the last word was read.

Audiobook-ARC Review My Rating: 4/5 ⭐️ Pub Date: December 7, 2022
In Death at Beresford Hall, we meet Francesca Eve, chef, caterer, and baker extraordinaire. She’s recently been accepted onto the country’s top cooking competition for their Christmas baking special. On site for more that just the competition, Eve is also investigating strange threats made against Miranda Appleby, the famous presenter-turned-chef.
When Miranda is found with a cake slice through her heart, Eve’s real reason for the trip results in utter failure. But, can Eve uncover the truth (and solve the murder) before another death occurs? And before the spirit of Christmas (cake) is ruined forever?
—— This was such a fun and festive audiobook for this time of year! It was the first “cozy mystery” I’ve read/listened to and it was perfect to listen to while working. It was easy to follow as well.
I loved that it was not a run of the mill thriller (which is what I’m used to) but instead more light and fresh. The added bonus of it being related to cooking and the holidays made it that much better.
Regarding the audiobook itself, I really enjoyed the narrator too! She was easy to understand, not monotone, and I love her accent (American here!)
Thank you NetGalley, Bookouture Audio, and the author for this audiobook-ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Celebrity chef Miranda is filming her Christmas special. Fran and Adam are pretending to be writing a book about her but in reality they are investigating a series of unpleasant gifts sent to Miranda but things escalate rapidly and soon they are trying to solve her murder... Death at Beresford Hall is the 4th book in the Adam and (Francesca) Eve series. There are mentions of earlier cases but no major spoilers about the crimes and criminals. Fran sees the clay feet of her idol when she arrives on set. The reality behind the show surprises and disappoints her but she has taken on the challenge of finding who has an axe to grind agaist Amanda. She is ably supported by the constantly hungry Adam and I love their friendship. We see the murder right at the start and then go back in time by 24 hours to see what led up to the death. Miranda's PA Midge has the motive and opportunity but Fran and Adam can't believe she would have actually done it. Could someone else have sneaked off set to commit the murder and why? I really liked the setting of the cookery show and the reality behind the TV fiction. Fran and Adam are a likeable pair of amateur sleuths. They are easy to relate to and have a self-doubt and little quirks that make them seem authentic. Death at Beresford Hall is an enjoyable cosy murder mystery and fans of TV cookery shows will love it!
Fran and Adam go undercover to a TV cooking competition as journalists to find out who is sending cooking show host Miranda Appleby threatening notes. When one of the contestants drops out Fran is roped in to replacing her which gets her closer to the action and the people she is investigating but then, while most everyone is on the set filming, Miranda is murdered and her assistant becomes the prime suspect. Sure that Midge is innocent Fran and Adam delve deeper into the investigation to find the killer while Fran also must concentrate on her cooking so when the show airs her customers do not come to believe she is a bad cook.
I enjoy the dynamic between the two main characters: Fran, a middle-aged caterer and Adam, a 20ish game designer. I had wondered after the first book in the series how a caterer could keep stumbling over dead bodies and still have people hire her to cater but so far each case seems to flow naturally into Fran’s life - in this case Fran and Adam were asked to help investigate by Nell, the police officer they deal with the most. I had suspicions of who the murderer was but not until fairly close to the denouncement. This is a really delightful series with plots just complicated enough that you do not realize who the murderer is immediately following the murder. I look forward to more of Fran and Adam’s escapades. Recommended

Adam and Fran AKA Eve are investigating some sinister gifts and threats that are being sent to Miranda Appleby the presenter and chef of a popular baking competition. They are working undercover under premise of writing a book. In order to carry this off, Fran is persuaded to be a contestant on the show. Francesca Eve is a chef, caterer, and baker and has never had a desired to be in the limelight but after being convinced and being accepted into the country’s favorite cooking competition, she can’t help but wonder – what would it be like to win?
I am a big audiobook fan but am a snob when it comes to the narrator. I was not all that pleased with this narrator. She sounded so angry and made the characters sound angry. I finally got used to her voice and hung in there.
