How Misunderstandings Made a Demon Lord

Rate this book
In a world with no cities, where elves, dwarves, humans, demons, and all others, live in small settled villages or as wandering tribes, the first city to rise is to them what Gods are to ants. Spreading like a flood, only rumors carried by wanderers survive to warn those who are not yet swept away by nightmare, but in a world where nothing ever changes, who would believe it?

Who?

Until it was too late, nobody.

Nobody but the survivors, and Sadrahan is a survivor. The lone adult to escape along with his newborn daughter, it falls to him to build a new life and a new home, one that nobody can take away. And if he should accidentally become the first Demon Lord and build a Kingdom to rival the one that built his village?

Well?

Whatever keeps his daughter safe.

Creating a world, populating it with numerous kinds of beings, and furthering plots and characters is a job for the gods. Robert Butler takes that job on and creates a mythic tale in "How Misunderstandings Made a Demon Lord."

First off, Butler flips the switch, making the heroes of the story what we would normally reject as demons--they have claws, horns and wings. But these demons are peaceable, living in their own villages. That is until the villains, a conquering horde of humans, invades the demon villages, killing many and enslaving others while cutting off their wings. The human's metal weapons are too much for demonkind.

Demon and farmer Sadrahan is encouraged by his wife to take seriously the talk of humans turned warmongers, and that allows him to save his newborn daughter and escape when his village is decimated and his wife killed. He flies into the mountains and finds a safe haven. Then he begins to seek out other demons who may have escaped the humans, and seeks to improve his chances of protecting his daughter, the being he cares about most.

Sadrahan gets some revenge on those who kill and enslave demons, but his main efforts are to gather more demons--and even a few humans--to eventually fortify their settlement and be ready for the expected onslaught of humans. Other demons are both confused and amazed at his abilities and plans, calling him Demon Lord and joining with him in his plans.

I'm a contemporary kinda guy, so I wasn't sure how I'd take to this sort of fantasy. But Butler keeps the action coming and has several character who provide flavor to the tale. There is much more to be told about the Demon Lord of Stronghold and his followers, so we wait for the next adventure.

I actually loved it

The cuteness factor was too much. It was so sweet. If you're a fan of the anime Overlord, you'll really enjoy this. A lot of "wow he thought so many steps ahead" when it was unintentional.

how misunderstandings made a demon lord

This was a fun book to read. Very entertaining. The characters were great and the plot going forward should be interesting. I look forward to the next book in the series.
