Going back to normal after months of captivity and torture isn’t as easy as his partner, Elder werespider Crimson Apocalyse, makes it seem. Jasper is depressed, dejected, and plagued by confusing dreams where death waits for him around every bend. Crimson, on the other hand, is his same old self and Jasper is starting to hate him for it.
And then a stranger arrives in New York City, looking for Jasper. A stranger with glowing white eyes, a teleportation device and a Masters in physics. Are they here to help or to harm? Is it merely another ruse to capture the rare, mysterious half-blood for good, or will Jasper finally learn the truth of what and who he is?

*I received an ecopy of this book from the authors. This has not influenced my review.*
This has become one of my favorite series, and it was so easy to sink right back into the lives of these characters I love.
This one seemed so much sadder in tone than the others. Jasper was really struggling with the emotional trauma of everything, and I felt so bad for him. His thoughts and feelings and fears were realistic, and I like when trauma is acknowledged in books, when characters sometimes can’t just shrug things off. I don’t think Crimson quite understood why Jasper was struggling, he just felt like Jasper was unhappy with him, and I felt for him too. They still loved each other, but it affected their relationship, they no longer had the same easiness and sweetness together.
A little less sad, one of my favorite things about this one was getting to meet Zahir and the spider, as their own entities! That was cool. And I loved the comfort and attraction that Jasper felt with both, since they’re both part of Crimson.
Retribution also had a significant part of the story, being a POV character again. He’s such a jerk! But the authors have done a good job of making him interesting and still making me care about what happens to him.
The story itself was just as good. Still a lot of danger and action, as per usual, though some of it had a twist that made it a bit more surreal and, let’s say, introspective for the characters. *MILD SPOILER* *END SPOILER*
But $^*%#&$*@^&! The ending has me worried, and I really need to know what’s going to happen in the next book.
Recommended For: Fans of Books 1-3 in E.M. Jeanmougin & Jay Wright's The Hunter and the Spider series. Anyone who likes slow burn mlm romance with a bit of angst, good ol' urban fantasy action, complex characters, love interests who are equal parts charming and obnoxious, and scary but cute werespiders!
I adore everything about this series, which is a testament to the authors skill as I wouldn't have thought I'd ever care so much about a werespider.
This picks up after Only the Good Die Young. Jasper and Crimson are trying to cope with the aftereffects of Jasper's captivity. Crimson is well intentioned but he's distracted by his family coming to town and the chaos they create.
This is a difficult book to review without giving away spoilers. The story centers around family, both those related by blood venom and the found family Crimson has created. There are significant revelations about Crimson's past which give a much needed insight into his personality. Jasper, for his part, is slowly coming to terms with the aftermath of his capture only to be faced with a new emergency that demands all of his attention.
I loved the balance of mystery, suspense, and romance. Jasper and Crimson are at their best when fighting a common enemy. Having to deal with their respective pasts is far more challenging.
One caveat, the ending is a cliffhanger and it's going to be a long wait till the next instalment is published in 2023.
The least interesting book in the series IMO ... and once the 'dreaming' began in earnest past the mid-way mark, the 'going down a rabbit-hole' experience left me fast-forwarding to a what-the?? finale. I'm hoping the next two books promised this year will bring the story-lines back to the urban paranormal action that the authors do best with.
I do love this series. I really do. It’s kept my attention through volume four, which is not my usual MO. And, I cannot wait for the next one.
First non-5 star, though. The dream sequence dragged on a little long. And the direction the characters took didn’t always make sense. Honestly, I was at that ‘What were they thinking?’ stage.
Guaranteed, I’ll understand motivations in the next book, because the authors are amazing. But this one left me wanting.
The best way to describe it is a whirlwind. There was ups, there was downs, and there was completely wild and unexpected. I don't know how I'm going to survive waiting until the next books, not knowing what happens next?! Loved it as usual!
This one felt a bit disjointed, too long in the middle and too quick to wrap things near the end. makes me wonder if the authors are running out of steam and looking to wrap things up and move on or if this is just an off book because ...things.
either way I'll still be checking back to see what's next from them.

There, I liked how Jasper and Crimson are trying to cope with the aftereffects of their captivity and Jasper's being bringing back to death. I loved how we learn more about Crimson's past, and how Jasper prooved that he love all parts of him... And I love more and more Ret... My heart broke at the decision made by Crimson, but I can understand his point of vue. I hope the next book will come soon :)
I felt so seen reading Jasper's struggle with PTSD and physical trauma and "deformity". I feel like actual portrayals of that type of trauma is so glossed over and I was so excited (though not for him) to watch his growth. Thank you for bringing this story to light and the care you put into it. I am eager to see where we go from here
Another amazing book, the dream sequence was perfectly weird (as dreams should and are) but the ending made me sad…. Hopefully the next brings everyone back together
I enjoyed the previous books and was even looking forward to seeing the effects of PTSD on the MC, but that dream sequence basically ruined the book in my opinion. It was way too long and completely threw off the pacing. By the time it was over I didn't really care about what happened afterwards. Maybe the next book will be better.
