Describes the life and accomplishments of baseball star Jackie Robinson, who became the first African American in twentieth-century major-league baseball.
Truthfully, I did not know much about Jackie Robinson before reading this book. After reading this book I can honestly say that I know a tad more that I did before. I did not notice when I picked up this book in the library that it was written in purely Spanish. Luckily I could read fluent Spanish. Now this baseball player was in the times where Whites and Blacks were segregated. From this book I learned that he was the first black baseball player to join a professional team. He was certainly not accepted easily, he was bullied and spit at and much more, but he kept at it. He also came from a really poor family, but he was a humble kid. This book I think would be good for black history month. I honestly think this book was helpful because the pictures were so detailed, so it was a guide to me. It honestly helped so much because since I the book was written in Spanish I struggled in reading it because I was not used to the language as opposed to English. I would certainly recommend this book to young readers.
This book was actually written by my great-aunt many years ago. I read it as a child a long time ago and loved it. The story is about a very greedy man who wont share anything with his neighbors. He loves to grow watermelon, however one year a watermelon that he planted by his front door grew to such gigantic proportions that Willie was trapped inside of his house! His kind neighbors all came over with their forks, knives and salt shakers and they all started on the outside and Willie started on the inside. The entire village managed to eat away the watermelon and free Willie. He reforms his life and becomes good friends with the entire village. I believe that my aunt also illustrated the story...I am starting to forget:( I am a little irritated by the cover here on Goodreads as it has nothing to do with the actually story.
