In our Christian walks, many of us struggle with doubt. Any time we are faced with a decision, a fork in the road, we wonder whether we’re making the choice God would have us make, or if we’re merely pursuing our own will.
In Direction, Cheri Cowell lays out a deceptively simple plan for evaluating our decisions in the light of biblical truth. Each of her points is backed up by examples from scripture.
A critical factor in this book -- one Cowell tackles right away -- is the misconception that if the way is clear, that must be God’s will. Not necessarily, she says. She points out that “The Path of Relative Ease” is a myth. To sum her point up in my own words, the path of least resistance is a Zen concept, not a Christian one. As Cowell demonstrates from the book of Job, obstacles may come precisely because we are doing God’s will.
Cowell has a clear, personable writing style. There is no fluff in this book. It is concise and comprehensive. I used it to teach a very advanced class of adult learners, and they all got something new from it. I highly recommend this book for individual or group study.
