When Sparks Fly

Rate this book
Polaris just got a little hotter. — Perhaps it was his wild black hair and indigo eyes, or maybe it was his enigmatic aura, but there was something about Hyna Blue that drew Gem. The man had clearly done hard labor, his cybernetic implants gave him increased strength, but he was no longer whole… -- and now he was getting drunk in her tavern.

Yes, Hyna Blue aroused instincts both carnal and nurturing. Gem’'s blood had been fiery to start with. Blue heated it even more.

Of course, since the planet of Polaris discovered its trainum mine, things were hot all over. Prosperity had blown in on a solar wind, along with many disreputable types, the least deceptive of which were the shape-shifting aliens. The ruined beauty of one patron and his drunken proposals were the least of Gem’s worries—and perhaps her one solace. Like her father had named it long ago, this inn was The Spark. Gem had to survive the blaze.

Blue and Gem. I didn't find this as compelling as the next book in the series but it was a great read. There's mystery, adventure, romance and everyday life on a another planet! Gem has her hands full running the family bar/hotel after her father died, and listening to the complaints of her little sisters. She's practical and self sufficient but she's also willing to lend a hand when the opportunity arises. And so she offers a job to a no-account drifter named Blue who keeps showing up at the bar. But Blue isn't what he seems and there's more going on in her hotel than business as usual. I don't usually like snarkily arrogant heroes but Blue was pretty entertaining. It was fun watching him fall in love with Gem, like watching a drunk try to cross a crowded room, lol.

I couldn't spend any more time with these characters before I felt the need to rip my hair out of my skull.

Gem is a bitch. She thinks she can do everything, all by herself. She's somehow judgmental while having the personality of a toaster oven. She lets her sister Brandy walk all over her and has no idea how to interact with a member of the opposite sex. And with two TSTL moments in the first 17% of the book, I just couldn't take her anymore.

Blue is a dick. I dunno what "ruined beauty" is, but he leers and gives me the willies when he hits on Gem like she's an easy mark. He completely takes over the situation (given, Gem doesn't seem to take care of it herself) and treats Gem like a doormat while demanding various favors, eating everything in sight, and acting like he knows something Gem doesn't. Not a hero that I find appealing in any way.

Brandy is a bitch, too. She just couldn't let Xera go without spouting off a few negative remarks first. She has not said one positive thing so far and the way she treats people, especially her own sisters, is horrendous. If I had continued reading, I would have wished for her death by the halfway point.

Xera was in the book I read before this (No Words Alone), so her presence really makes no sense to me here.

A decent concept for a story, completely ruined by immature, emotionally stunted characters.

The heroine has always been the responsible one, the reliable one, the sister who can lead and offer control over her world. Since her father died, she's felt it's her duty to take over the bar and she's done just that. She rules her establishment with an iron fist and has everything in its place.

The hero, a stranger to town who's been frequenting her business, is a compelling man. He is flirtatious and overtly forward with his comments but he is also damaged. He is half mech, his arm and his eyes machine. He is also a drunk, or so his wobbly walk would have people believe. She doesn't know what comes over her but she offers him a job. She pays him, feed him and cloth him if he will help out with a few odd jobs around the bar and hotel. It is a decision she regrets immediately. Something about this man is too virile to her and all too tempting. She's stuck now with a man who does good work but also makes it a habit to challenge her on every single thing.

He is dominate, she can tell that right off the bat and normally she is as well. But when paired together, it seems that more often than naught, he is the victor. When the heroine is targeted by an assassin, the hero suddenly becomes her bodyguard. He is instant and demanding and soon she finds herself with a shadow who she fears her weak defenses will soon no longer be able to keep at a distance. The hero is not what he seems. Sure, he's a criminal but that was in his younger years. Now he's a drug enforcer undercover to root out a drug ring centering in this bar. He's normally a ruthless type of man, using his charm to seduce but never to follow through with. Problem is, he's falling for the strong, independent and all too beautiful target. He's torn between believing she's far too straight laced to be involved in illegal activities but at the same time fearful to believe her innocent only to be wrong. He can't justify his growing affections towards and but it's clear she's in danger. Soon, the plot is uncovered and the drug ring put to rest. The heroine is innocent and he testifies in court to this but in the process, he is discovered to have lied to her. She's torn between loving a man who risked his life for hers and her fear of the unknown but powerful desire to have a future with a man who has deceived her. But while the courtship is rough at first, things settle down and the potential for true love shines brightly between them.

Okay, A+++ for characters but B- for plotline. I was totally in love with these characters- all of them. The hero was defiantly a stand out for me. He was dark and mysterious but, on the surface, he was a flirt with some serious alpha male tendencies. The way in which he challenged the heroine with cool but ruthless facts was just what this equally strong female lead needed. He did it was a cocky sureness that sometimes was too demanding because at the beginning, you're not sure where he's coming from. The heroine was a strong female lead but with a fair share of vulnerabilities. She wasn't as in control of her world as she imaged herself to be and now she's discovering secrets and crimes going on right under her nose. She held things together the best she could but she learned to rely on the hero for help- though she fought this like a tiger at first. Together they had a sweet but troublesome relationship that was tense at times and awkward at others. It took a lot for them to finally find the courage to succumb to their feelings. The other characters, including the heroine's 2 sisters could very easily be heroines of their own stories and I would love to read those as they were interesting females. However, the plotline itself was a bit scattered and hodge podge. It didn't really have a firm villain and it bounced around a lot between conflicts until my head was spinning at bit. Plus, the excitement of the story did not carry through to the end and the last few pages were a bit awkward. Still, I really liked this book. It could have been perfect if a few things were tweaked but still, a really good book.

What the heck did I just read? Some how I always seem to pick up books by this author and when I look at them and read the back I get this feeling that I'm going to hate the characters. But no matter, I wipe clean the slate and begin my read. 'I really hate this chick.' I find myself thinking as I continue reading. By the end of the book I'm staring in shock at the choices all of the characters have made ("What do you mean you'll just up and let your sister go join the galactic explorers or whatever? I mean, it's not like anything changed, she's still in danger!! Why aren't you worried still? What happened to the few emotions that actually made sense?"). Blue was no hero that I'd find attractive. He seems suave and hot and handsome, but he's really a bottomless eating pit with the snarky sass of a donkey. A big Jerk (yes, it deserves a capital).

I couldn't get into the characters and the 'chemistry' between Blue and Gem. It's a shame, I rather liked the world building that went on in this story.

Good read, action-oriented futuristic romance. I read her No Words Alone sometime ago and really liked it - this book comes before that one on the chronology of the universe. The heroine from Words is just leaving home for the academy to become an explorer. [In the world of publishing, Words was published before this one.:]

Gem, the oldest Harrisdaughter, manages her inn and her family with precision, control, and formidable to-do lists. Enter Hyna Blue who seems to be a ne'er-do-well drifter who hangs out in her bar. She offers him a job and attempts to manage him along with everything else. Suddenly everything starts to go wrong - her youngest sister wants to leave, her middle sister is wound so tight she's ready to explode and Blue refuses to behave respectably. And then someone seems to be trying to kill her...

Hyna Blue is tracing a drug operation that seems to be centered on the inn. How could it be happening without Gem knowing? Is the woman he lusts after a crook or a dupe? And boy is she going to be mad when she finds out he's been lying to her...

In the fiery world of Polaris, Gem, the proprietor of The Spark, encounters an intriguing stranger named Hyna Blue. With his striking appearance, cybernetic enhancements, and enigmatic aura, he stirs both carnal desires and nurturing instincts in Gem. The planet of Polaris is experiencing newfound prosperity due to its trainum mine, but along with riches come disreputable characters and shape-shifting aliens. Gem's tavern becomes a refuge amidst the chaos, and Hyna Blue's presence adds a unique spark to her life.

This story unfolds in a scorching setting, where survival is paramount, and Gem's encounters with Hyna Blue promise an intriguing and passionate journey.

Even reading these books out of order, I found it to be an enjoyable read, although not as captivating as Xera's story. The characters in this book didn't have the same level of spunk that I encountered in the previous one. Nevertheless, I'm still curious and looking forward to discovering what the youngest sister's storyline will bring to the series.

Having placed "No Words Alone" on my keeper shelf, I was looking forward to what I thought was the 2nd installment about a trilogy of sisters set in the future on a world called Polaris.

First of all, this book, while published second, is actually the first chronologically. This is Gem's story. Her sisters are Xera (heroine of Now Words Alone) and Brandy. They run an inn/bar called The Spark, and that's about the only part of the book that's sparking for me. Multiple tropes that really weren't even fleshed out (more like hinted at), a disjointed storyline and no chemistry between the two romantic characters at all. It almost felt like the author wrote this as an afterthought so she could give Xera a backstory.

If you read No Words Alone or plan to, this book explains a little of why Xera is the way she is and what some of her motivations were in NWA. For that alone, I give this book 2 stars.

So ungodly disappointed. Enjoyed the first book, and jumped right into this. Bad idea. The whole sexual stigma a la Hester Prynne was not an anomaly- nope their society was crazy stringent with their ideals. A family could be ruined if a female was caught kissing a male. I do not live in the Middle East, follow a fundamentalist religion, or am a member of a cult- nor do I want to be. So why would I want to 'escape' for a few hours into this world? Give me a break.
I want to punch every female in this book. My opinion of Xera has changed from the last book; I now want to punch her in the throat every time she speaks. Same goes for Brandy. And Gem? She's a self-righteous jerk with the personality of a wet paper bag. 'Why couldn't you compromise your job for a chance to get rejected by me?' *gags*
Sometimes it really kills me that I'm compelled to finish all books in a series. Definitely won't pay any money for anything else from this author.

Better than I expected. Gem was a little silly sometimes, but she always seemed to come to her senses before major drama ensued. The sci-fi aspect of the story wasn't a huge focal point. Often in these types of novels, the author is so proud of their "inventions" that the frequently go off on tangents that are a turn off for your standard romance fan. I'm an even bigger sci-fi fan than I am romance fan, so I found some of the space age descriptions Dawn came up with here surprisingly interesting...wouldn't have minded if she'd expanded a bit. Overall, decent story and characters. Not a huge amount of sex, mostly just build up...so, if that's what you're looking for, look elsewhere. I've added Xera and Brandy's stories to my TBR list.

Though i read the books out of order, it didn't ruin the story. Gem & Blue meet under bad circumstances but have an interesting relationship. I liked how every time i thought the story was over, a new twist began.

I love the story and concept of this world. I'll definitely be reading more. The end felt a little drawn out and then too quick as well. But I do like that it kept going instead of stopping at the happily ever after bit.

Not enough 4 a blaze

This is at least my 3rd book by this author and admire her creativity but found this one didn’t light up for me. Characters and story failed to entertain me but she has talent and several others out there worth a look.

This was a nice story. The characters were well developed and interesting. The good guys were great and the bad guys wicked.

So the mixing pot of peoples on Polaris, we read about Xera's bossy feisty older sister, Gem Harrisdaughter. Gem falls for a wild dark man with indigo eyes, Hyna Blue. Gem runs the inn/tavern the Spark that her father built before passing away. Blue is one hot stubborn guy with a lot of baggage, so Gem has her work cut out for her.
It was tough to keep up with all the mystery and assassination attempts left and right and center, but it did keep the story exciting and fast paced. I read No Words Alone Xera's story first, not knowing that When Sparks Fly this story was first in the series. It didn't really matter as both stories are fairly independent and it was nice to see all three sisters together to believe that they were close before Xera took off into space and stayed there. The Spark Inn was busy and huge and I liked that although the girls lived in a puritanical society where they were left innocent (sexually) and had many social rules, they were still left to choose their own future partners and could run the serious business without the aid of a man or male relatives. There were tough smart women, but very innocent in the relations that go on between a man and a woman. There are perhaps two sexy scenes but they are way at the end when they finally get the HEA.
Reader be warned, there is lots of action, violence and ripped off body parts, this story is not for the weak of stomach.

From one of my favourite authors, this book was strangely unsatisfying.

This is book #2 yet it all happens prior to book #1. Now I knew this before I read it, still it just seemed wrong somehow.

On a planetoid far, far away 3 sisters are struggling & on the surface, managing to cope running an inn following the death of their father. Along comes our hero, Blue, unfortunately he is an undercover narc cop.

Arson, assassination attempts and our heroine, Gem, trying to retain her virginity in the face of overwhelming odds and this book should of been a cracker.

Not sure where it went wrong but this one wasn't up to Ms Dawn's usual excellence. Won't stop me reading everything else she's written though.

I liked this book right away. The characters, the futuristic world and the romance was all very believable and well developed. The story surrounds three sisters running a very successful inn that is quickly the center for mayhem. The focus is more on the sparks flying between the oldest sister Gem and Hyna Blue, a sexy drifter who offers to be her bodyguard when someone starts attacking her and her sisters. She's the responsible, reserved and very inexperienced sister of the three and while the world around her is being shaken up Blue is quickly shaking her up. Should she let her innocent and fragile heart fall for him and can he keep her alive long enough to find out?

If you liked or loved the books of the Dark Lands series then you'll enjoy this book as well!

This isn't a book I would typically read. The whole living on other planets and aliens typically are not on my list of want to read books.

However having said that, I have to say that I love Blue! I loved his character from the first moment he entered the book until the last page was turned!

I enjoyed the book so much in fact I went searching for the next book! This is a book that I would recommend to all my friends regardless their feel of space books. I was able to relate to the characters, enjoyed the suspense, and thrillers along the way.

Blue, Azor, Gem what lovely characters you have created within this series....I will continue to follow along with each book!

Absolutely loved it! Highly recommended.

Gem, Xera and Brandy run a brewery, bar and inn on the asteroid, Polaris. Gem is the overall manager, Xera handles the inn and Brandy is apprenticing as brew-master. Xera has also been training to join the Galactic Explorers and has given her notice. As she heads out there is an attempt on Gem's life that is foiled by their latest employee, Hyna Blue. Blue is undercover on a narcotics mission and the sister's establishment is looking like the focal point. More attempts are made on Gem and Brandy is looking suspicious. Blue's attraction to Gem is causing personal conflict and an interesting bevy of secondary characters and aliens spice up the plot. Looking forward to the second in this futuristic series.

Fundamentalmente he tenido problemas con los personajes (ni uno me caía bien) y con la historia, que por momentos me parecía más que absurda, pero si quieres saber más detalles de porqué decidí abandonar este libro y la trilogía, no dudes en visitar mi blog:

Nice first book in a short series. I really enjoyed it. Since I read the series out of order I was happy to finally read about what first happend on Polaris and why both siblings wanted to leave. Blue was rather cute, cuter than I thought him to be and Gem was fierce, like I imagined her to be and at the same time vulnerable.
Great first read. I recommend it!

I found this an amusing read, even though I clearly missed a few things. Probably because this is the second in a series? I think? I may do a re-read, and see if I just read to fast to catch things. But it was fun, and there was lots of characters that I enjoyed.

An ok science fiction story set on a distant planet. It could have use a lot more world building about the universe, the time, the species and their cultures... I was a bit lost and craving details.
As for the characters Gem and Blue are very cute and sweet.
