Designing spaces is her passion, but clearing her sister's name is her mission. Can Lady Beatrice outwit the formidable DCI Richard Fitzwilliam to solve the case, or will she become a royal embarrassment?
DEATH AT FRANCIS COURT NOW CONFIRMED AS MURDER!

Speculation is rife that the victim, estate manager Alex Sterling (44), was found by Lady Beatrice (35), the Countess of Rossex, niece of King James. Lady Beatrice, who has finally come out of hiding following her son’s departure to boarding school, has been managing the project to refurbish and redesign the Events Suite at Francis Court, alongside Perry Juke.

Heading up the murder investigation is Detective Chief Inspector Richard Fitzwilliam. Rumour has it that he and Lady Beatrice have a fractious history…

Awful man! How dare Fitzwilliam suggest Lady Beatrice’s sister is the number one suspect for Alex’s murder. It could be any one of the staff who were on-site that morning. Well, she’ll show Mr High and Mighty Fitzwilliam! With her attention to detail, her clever dog Daisy, Perry’s imagination, and his partner’s contacts at Fenshire CID, they’ll find the murderer before him. And then they’ll see who’ll look like a fool. Because it won’t be Lady Beatrice, will it?

Helen Golden spins crimes that are charmingly British, delightfully deadly, and served with a twist of humour.

With quirky characters, clever red herrings, and plots that keep the pages turning, she’s the author of the much-loved A Right Royal Cozy Investigation series, following Lady Beatrice and her friends—including one clever little dog—as they uncover secrets hidden in country houses and royal palaces. Her new historical mystery series, The Duchess of Stortford Mysteries, is set in Victorian England and introduces an equally curious sleuth from Lady Beatrice’s own family tree—where murders are solved over cups of tea, whispered gossip, and overheard conversations in drawing rooms and grand estates.

Helen lives in a quintessential English village in Lincolnshire with her husband, stepdaughter, and a menagerie of pets—including a dog, several cats, a tortoise, and far too many fish.

If you love clever puzzles, charming settings, and sleuths with spark, her books are waiting for you.

2023 bk 31. Rarely do I pick up a mystery and read it completely through without taking breaks during the day (day time reading is always different from nighttime reading). I started this mid-afternoon and looked up to realize it was past super time. This is a most enjoyable and fun contemporary mystery involving some royal family members (not the current crop but a made up crew), their estate, interior design, and a body. The tension is there between various persons, but there is also joy as big sis realizes that little sis can handle more than she thinks, a Daisy dog wins over everyone, and friendships develop. Excellent read and I've already ordered the rest of the series.

I'll be the first to admit that while arresting, the blurb for this book is a mite confusing. That's okay, it becomes clear when you read the book; and besides, that's the point of a blurb- to get your attention!

Spruced Up For Murder is the debut of Helen Golden, a cozy mystery series set around an English Royal Family that's just a few threads alternate from our own reality. The names and relationships are changed, but the overall dynamics of English aristocracy seem to be there. The main character the reader follows is Lady Beatrice, niece to the current King and what is referred to as a non-working Royal. She's been focused on raising her son after the tragic death of her husband 14 years ago; but now that her son is off to boarding school, her family has a job for her! When Lady Beatrice and Perry Juke find the body of the estate manager, the officer in charge of the investigation, Detective Chief Inspector Richard Fitzwilliam is the same who investigated her husband's death all those years ago. Unfortunately, due to a clash of personalities, the two loathe each other.

Lady Beatrice, or Lady Bea, as she prefers, is an interesting and surprising character. She's known for being cold and aloof to people not in her inner circle, but as Perry, her sister's assistant learns, it's a front to protect herself. When past her prickly exterior, she's as sweet and loving as her little dog Daisy. That's one of the things I really liked in this book. Daisy is just as much a character as anyone else, and while universally adored, isn't a bratty dog. Perry is a capable assistant, interior design maven, and wonderful, teasing foil for Lady Bea's dogged persistence. Simon, Perry's husband is a former policeman turned crime writer and guides their amateur sleuthing. DCI Fitzwilliiam ends up being more than just a hard-nosed policeman as well!

Told with a clever mix of flashbacks, media headlines, text exchanges, and good old-fashioned prose; this is a very fun cozy mystery with plenty of dips and turns, and the entire staff of a Royal Palace to play in! Being American, I had to perhaps work a little harder to appreciate some of the nuances in the book, but that in no way impaired my enjoyment. Overall, I'm highly impressed with Spruced Up For Murder. It sets a great tone, introduces a wide cast of characters, and allows a different view of the Royal Family and their lives. I'm very much looking forward to reading Lady Bea's next adventure!

I will admit I picked this book because of the very cute (but probably AI generated) dog on the cover - and I went in with pretty low expectations, as always with this sort of cosy mystery.

The low expectations were a “good” thing, so to speak. At least I wasn’t overly disappointed.

In the end, this story and its characters won’t linger with me for more than maybe half an hour after ending. I found very little real substance in this book.
Don’t get me wrong, it had some proper, serious points, but the overall was not quite my thing. I felt like I could zone out for huge chunks of the story and still stay with it. It was simple to keep up with.

Too simple for my liking.

A lot of name-dropping in the form of expensive brands was done to properly tell the listener/reader that these people are rich and posh, you know! *sips tea with the little finger poking far out*
But aside from that, I failed to feel a real connection to any sort of royal life-style or anything. It just felt surface deep.

I really liked the narrator and she’s doing a great job throughout, except for, maybe… Well, I don’t know what it is with the voice she makes for Lady Beatrice, but it’s such a wide-eyed, naive, sort of “lady in distress” voice that I had a hard time liking her, and even less relating to her. She comes across as a very sheltered 35 year old, apparently rolling in expensive clothes and privilege, and... That's it. That's all there is to find, pretty much. At least in this first book.

I’m unsure if I will return to this series or not. I usually give cosy mysteries more than one book to grow, before ditching them, but this one just didn’t resonate with me.

A Royal Mystery

Like Rhys Bowen's "royal spyness," Lady Beatrice is a member of the English royal family. Like Lady Georgie, she tends to shun the limelight. Since her husband's death
in a compromising situation while
pregnant with her son, she has only socialized with her family and gets comfort from her dog Daisy

But her seclusion ends with the murder of
A senior staff member. She again hides from the press and an avidly curious public. She thinks the two deaths are related and must find evidence to link them.

While working the problem she begins to go out into the world again. She no longer needs her staff and family to protect her. Her personal growth and recovery from trauma give the mystery depth, along with insights
into the duties and restrictions of life within The Firm. I look forward to sharing her journey.

Series: A Right Royal Cozy Investigation #1
Publication Date: 10/19/22
Period: Contemporary
Number of Pages: 318

This is certainly a unique concept for a cozy murder mystery, so kudos to this debut author for that. The mystery was well developed and the clues were dropped enticingly along with the red herrings. It did take me a while to figure out who the ongoing protagonists were going to be (for the series) – mostly because they are such an unlikely mix. Again, kudos to the author for that.

Lady Beatrice, Countess of Rossex, is the reclusive, widowed niece of the king. Fourteen years ago, her husband was killed in an automobile accident, with another woman in the car. Lady Beatrice was very young at the time and the ensuing feeding frenzy by the press caused her to become almost a hermit – rarely leaving her apartments. To help bring her out of her shell, her sister, Lady Sarah, cajoles her into taking on an interior decorating project at Francis Court.

Perry Juke has worked at Francis Court for several years and is now assistant to Lady Sarah. Lady Sarah thinks Perry and this project are just what Lady Beatrice needs to bring her out of hiding. So, who is he to object? Even though he thinks Lady Beatrice is cold, snooty, and aloof, he agrees to the task. Perry’s partner, Simon Lattimore (a famous crime writer), reminds Perry that there could be other reasons for Lady Beatrice to appear cold and aloof. Perry is ready to begin the project and have some fun – and he was delighted to find a wonderful new friend in Lady Beatrice.

Detective Chief Inspector Richard Fitzwilliam was part of the team who originally investigated the death of Lady Beatrice’s husband. Now, he is back investigating a new murder and as soon as he and Lady Beatrice are on the same turf, the hostilities begin.

Perry, Simon and Lady Beatrice are bound and determined to solve the crime first and show that gruff, condescending detective up. DCI Fitzwilliam does not take well to their meddling in police business and the fur flies.

I thought this book had an excellent mix of humor and drama. The chemistry between all of the characters was realistic and I was sure I’d like them if I ever met them in real life. Personally, I thought the book was a bit wordy and a tad draggy at a few spots, but overall, it was a nice read. Somehow, though, I couldn’t get my head around the fact that the person who is 17th in line for the English throne is playing at being a detective.

I can recommend this book and I hope you will enjoy it should you choose to read it. The next two books in the series will be following close behind this one, so be on the lookout for them - For Richer, For Deader (11/16/22) & Not Mushroom For Death (12/14/22).

I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I always like to discover an author who to me is new
With a fun read I enjoy and can highly recommend to you.
This is one such and I'm pleased to say
I can't wait to read more in the future (soon) some day

A right royal cosy investigation is the tag for this book
And it seems so appropriate if you take a look.
The niece of the King is the investigator you'll see
With two friends and her beloved dog, Daisy.

Lady Beatrice is the Countess of Rossex, a mum and a widow, too,
After her husband was killed in a crash that caused a hullaballoo.
She tries to avoid the press and seems aloof now
But it is her way of coping with the pressures somehow.

When challenged to use her interior design skills she agrees -
But finding a dead body is not what she needs.
With Perry and Simon she sets out to discover
What happened to Alex, was it an accident or something other?

Get ready for clashes with the investigating detective
Who makes her antagonistic instead of reflective.
With Daisy and Perry working with her as a team
There's new friendship and food that's a gastronome's dream.

A fun read with humour, royalty and maybe the hint of a chance
Of discovering the murderer and a possible future romance?
I really enjoyed this right from the start
And look forward to reading in the future more parts.

For my complementary copy of this book, I say thank you,
I throughly enjoyed reading it and this is my honest review.

I save cozy mysteries for long winter nights and as a treat between fantasy books. Spruced up for Murder was as delightful as a bite of dark chocolate and a cup of coffee in the middle of a Minnesota winter afternoon.

Lady Bea has retreated from the world after the death of her husband 14 years earlier. She has a son she adores -- but after he leaves for boarding school how will she occupy her time?

What I love about cozy mysteries is the deep descriptions of the village life, the character growth, and in this case the description of the clothes and a way of life completely unfathomable to me. I wasn't fond of Lady Bea at first - as Fitzwilliam said, "entitled...and dismissive." But as I read on, I could see how contemporary "near-royals" are stuffed in such tiny boxes of expectations, and any desire to become their own person is not only castigated by the family but also the public. It made me a little more sympathetic to the long road it takes for Bea to come out of her isolation.

It was a fun story, even more contemporary that Hamish McBeth and his lady Priscilla, but with the same deep affection and understanding that the setting of the story is as important as the characters.

Thanks for such a fun escapist read.

I am wobbling back and forth between 3 and 4 because it /is/ a very sweet book and I enjoyed the mystery once it got going, but the writing was a bit too info-dump heavy for me. I don't mind being told who's wearing what a few times, but I don't like being hand held through every little facet of a character's life and day when it isn't there to add anything but flavour text. But honestly, that's a personal taste issue that I'm sure any number of people prefer; it just didn't work for me. It did annoy me immensely that upon /finding a body/ the amateur investigators proceeded to touch and move things around. I know this is a new experience for them, but come on now, that's Miss Marple school 101!

With that said though, the mystery itself was a quick, fun read and I'm always a sucker for a dog tagging along to solve murders. There's a good chance a ton of my complaints were just the result of new series syndrome; I'll pick up one of the books from later along the line at some point to see if they've smoothed out on their own.

Luca Mazza (38), who was taken ill during a food demonstration at the Fenn House Food and Wine Festival two days ago, is now known to have ingested poison. Lady Beatrice (36), the king’s niece, who is working on a refurbishment project at Fenn House with her business partner Perry Juke (34), is believed to be comforting Luca’s boss and close friend Sebastiano Marchetti (38), who she began dating last month.

Is he crazy? Why else would Detective Chief Inspector Richard Fitzwilliam suggest that Sebastiano poisoned Luca without any evidence? So now, with the help of her little dog Daisy and her best friends Perry and Simon, Lady Beatrice will have to prove to Mr Know-it-all Fitzwilliam that Seb is innocent. But with so many people having access to the food preparation area at the show how will she find out who did murder Luca before Fitzwilliam lets his personal dislike get the better of him and arrests Seb?

This is a good mystery. Although it is long it has a good mystery. I don't know if it was a part of the story but I feel like the best way affects my opinion of this book.

I love cozy mysteries, and this one is probably my favorite one that I’ve read so far! Aside from the royalty aspect (which I am a huge fan of when reading!), the whole mystery was just amazing. It kept me guessing the whole entire time, and my suspects changed as often as they did when the main characters were trying to solve the mystery themselves! It was really nice to see the dynamic change with Lady Bea and her new relationships she was able to form throughout the book. To see her come out of her shell and really become her own person was really nice. She took the reigns when it came to solving this murder and she never gave up - and it forced her to go outside of her comfort zone several times. I also loved that this was a “clean” book. I just purchased the second one in the series and I can’t wait to get started on it. I really hope Fitzwilliam makes an appearance!

That man is a pain!

Lady Beatrice discovered the body of Alex Sterling is she was redecorating the rooms of her home. He was very definitely dead. Detective Chief Inspector Richard Fitzwilliam now is back overseeing the investigation of Alex's murder.

The nerve of that man he has decided Lady Bea's sister, Lady Sarah is a suspect! Of course, Lady Sarah would never do such a thing, would she? Do you think Inspector Fitzwilliam and Lady Bea can get through this without coming to blows?

Who actually killed Alex Sterling? The answer will be found in this entertaining first novel of Helen Golden's! I guarantee you won't want to miss this.

Lady Bea and Daisy

Lady Bea enters a garden room in her family's home and finds a body on the floor. Within hours the place is swarming with police and the household is all a - flutter. The grounds keeper has been killed in the room that is in the middle of being redecorated. After a run in with the head CID police, she and her two best friends decide the only way justice will happen for anyone is if they try to find the killer. Very well written. Explanations are completely logical and the story follows the facts and leads the reader to several conclusions before the surprise ending. You have got to read this one. Don't forget to enjoy the wonderful character of the beloved dog, Daisy.

I really enjoyed this. It’s a fun cozy mystery with an interesting mix of characters. I’m not a royalist, but still enjoyed it, and those who do enjoy British royalty will probably enjoy it, too. Plus, there’s an adorable Westie with a penchant for food. Perry and Simin are a great duo who add a nice touch to the development of the story.

My only issue is that Gill was mentioned as being from Scotland, not Ireland early on. I don’t remember an early mention of Ireland, so when it comes up suddenly later on, it doesn’t make sense. Then it seems to switch back and forth. I also thought it odd that “crack on” would need explaining.

Those issues aside, I enjoyed it and want to read the next.

I really enjoyed Spruced Up for Murder. Lady Beatrice is a widow and now that her son has gone to boarding school, it’s time for her to come out of her self-imposed isolation. Her sister, Lady Sarah, has talked her into heading up an interior decorating project at Francis Court. Sarah also gives her an assistant, Perry Juke, who has worked on the estate for years. Perry knows Lady Beatrice has a reputation for being cold and snobby, but he agrees to take on the task anyway.

And then they find a dead body in the room they’re working in.

Lady Beatrice and Perry start investigating. They make a fun team, with their own styles and own ways of finding out information. It also helps that Perry’s partner, Simon, is a crime writer with his own CID connections. He’s also a fabulous chef. Honestly, this has all the ingredients I need in a cozy – likable characters, a cute dog, and delicious food. Detective Chief Inspector Richard Fitzwilliam is not thrilled with their snooping, and he and Lady Beatrice tend to bring out the worst in each other.

The chemistry between all of the characters was realistic and I was sure I’d like them if I ever met them in real life. The plot moved along well. There were just enough red herrings and potential suspects. I’m looking forward to the next two in the series, For Richer, For Deader (review November 20) and Not Mushroom for Death (review December 16th).

I wasn't sure a cosy English mystery featuring royalty would work, but the believable characters and cleverly written mystery full of originality ensure it does. I enjoyed the quirky characters, well-described setting and twisty plot. The contemporary celebrity and the media's intrusive nature themes make the story realistic and relevant. I engaged with the characters quickly and liked the variations of texts and media articles illuminating the dialogue and descriptions. The world-building is thorough and effective, and the pacing is good. Some character traits were repetitive, but this didn't interfere with the entertaining story.

I look forward to reading the next one.

Spruced up for Murder

This cozy mystery hit all my criteria for an exceptional cozy mystery. It's very well written and edited. The characters are believable. I thought I had solved the mystery quite a few times. (I hadn't.) While it eludes to what could be a future book, it isn't a cliffhanger.
I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

What I liked: A little white dog helps solve a cozy murder mystery involving the extended Royal family and their employees.

What I disliked: Too much reference to the details of designer clothes each character would wear. Also, the hatred between Lady Beatrice and Inspector Fitzwilliam never amounted to anything.

What a good murder mystery! Lots of great characters with the main being well-developed. Enjoyed following along with the strong female protagonist. I am really enjoying the Right Royal series by Helen Golden. I read the prequel and now this first book and I am hooked. I love the character of Lady Bea and the relationships she is forming with those from whom she previously held herself aloof. The mystery has some elements from the past and the solution was not one that I saw coming. A totally delightful mystery.
