Nisio Isin (西尾維新 Nishio Ishin), frequently written as NisiOisiN to emphasize that his pen name is a palindrome, is a Japanese novelist and manga writer. He attended and left Ritsumeikan University without graduating. In 2002, he debuted with the novel Kubikiri Cycle, which earned him the 23rd Mephisto Award at twenty years of age.

He currently works with Kodansha on Pandora, the Kodansha Box magazine, and Faust, a literary magazine containing the works of other young authors who similarly take influence from light novels and otaku culture. He was also publishing a twelve volume series over twelve months for the Kodansha Box line; Ryusui Seiryoin was matching this output, and the Kodansha Box website stated that this is the first time in the world two authors have done twelve volume monthly novel series simultaneously from the same publisher.

In February, 2008, his novel Death Note Another Note: The Los Angeles BB Murder Cases was released in English by Viz Media. Del Rey Manga has already released the first volume in his Zaregoto series. His Bakemonogatari, Nisemonogatari and Katanagatari novels have been adapted into anime series. Nekomonogatari (Kuro) has been adapted into an anime TV movie, and Kizumonogatari will be release in theaters this year. Monogatari Series: Second Season, adapted from 6 books in Monogatari Series will air in July 2013. Another of his works, Medaka Box (manga), has been adapted into a two-season anime series.

Well, the fated day has arrived, after so many years of following zaregoto the time of finishing the last volume has arrived. It feels like saying goodbye to an old friend.

“The end of the story, goodbye"

My thoughts after reading "Uprooted Radical (Part three): The blue savant and the nonsense user"
Written by NisiOisiN
Illustrated by Take

Translation:
This book was fan-translated by Hikiken and proofread by the folks at Sway. What can I say, really, in all honesty, the quality of the translations always leave me dumbfounded, I have the book in Japanese and when I read it I always have the same thought in mind “damn, the translator did a very damn good job at it"

I'll be rereading this book two more times in the future (when vertical releases it and when I finish reading it in Japanese).

The story:
The end, the story, and the adventures of the nonsense user finally reach their end, with a lot of tragedy, happiness, plot twists, tears, and most importantly nonsense.

Enjoyment:
I really would never have imagined that the day I would finish zaregoto would arrive, ever since I read the kubikiri cycle zaregoto became a very important part of my life, the characters, specially Ii were so important for me that at one point in time I started seeing him as a living breathing person. Having to say goodbye to him leaves me with a sense of melancholy and sadness but what can I say, my boy did what he wanted to.
This novel is incredible, an absolute masterpiece. I read the entire thing in a single sitting (a thing I had done since I read kubishime for the first time) every single page was filled with something incredible, incredible development, incredible characters, incredible dialogue, and an incredible story. All of that boiled down pretty fast into the climax and end of the series, for real, what an ending.

The verdict:
The last volume of the series that made me an avid reader, the last of the series that marked my life, the last of the series that created literature, what else can I say thank you nisio, and thank you everyone who worked on this book. Zaregoto is really a once-in-a-lifetime experience, there is nothing that can compare, and definitely a series everyone should read at least once in their lifetimes. It's like saying goodbye to a friend you know you'll never see again, but I'm happy for that friend and wish him happiness in his life. Goodbye nonsense-user, this sure was an adventure I won't be able to forget for the rest of my life
Uprooted Radical (Part three): The blue savant and the nonsense user
a 20/10

[Update: Aug, 28, 2021]

Well, it’s now been almost a year since I finished the series.
In the time it took for the fan translation to release I had the opportunity of rereading the entire series completely in Japanese. I can’t thank enough the sway team enough for making such a high-quality release.

Regarding my thoughts on the book almost one year after:

Zaregoto is still my favorite series of all time, even though, at the time I read the book for the first time I was completely speechless. I couldn’t believe how much I had liked it.
And now, I still like it! And quite a lot, I wouldn’t say I would rate it as high as a 20/10, but it surely deserves a high rating.

The ending of zaregoto is quite an emotional ride, that has stuck with me until now. I wouldn't say life-changing but it definitely influenced a big portion of the person I am now.
Thank you for everything nisio! thanks for translating it sway!

Can’t wait for Kodansha to publish it so I can own the book in English physical!!!

“…Even if one ends up losing their life?”
“If that can become the proof that they lived.”

A wonderful conclusion to this wonderful series, somehow managing to stick the landing. Seeing Iichans progression through these novels has been thoroughly engaging to read and how so many characters are endeared to me by the end. The last chapter was wonderful, even if it means the end of this world, the end of this narrative, I couldn’t of wished for a better end to this narrative.

I want to mention Fox Masked Man, as he is genuinely one of my favourite antagonists I’ve had the pleasure of reading. His interactions with Ii, the way he thinks, the concepts he brings up and how they’re explored is so gripping.

I’m aware there is a volume 10, with very mixed reception. When or even if I get to it remains to be seen, maybe my Japanese reading will get good enough for it one day, maybe somebody (Definitely not sway translations anytime) will translate it. Remains to be seen.

But, If we are to have a connection, I’d like to see you again.

'Uprooted Radical (Part Three): The Blue Savant and the Nonsense User'

"The happiness I was searching for was so far, but— We were able to attain happiness. While losing many things, We earned something irreplaceable."

For his first series, Nisioisin definitely cooked with Zaregoto. Overall, I loved the cast, the growth of Ii, and his usual witty writing style. My biggest gripe with Uprooted Radical is the absence of the murder mystery, which is why I will mostly likely prefer Cannibal Magical and Kubishime Romanticist as individual entries. That being said, I loved how the Story concluded, and truly believe that Nisio takes everything in here and perfects it in Monogatari. We are alive, and shoutout Humanity's Strongest!

Next stop for Nisioisin: Katanagatari...
