The Flannigan Clan returns in the second adventure of the Promises mystery series with fresh hope and powerful passions needed to confront a new mystery which threatens to destroy their family, friends and faith. God has forsaken Philadelphia's St. Brendan's High School. When a parish priest hears a confession regarding child abuse, he must choose between maintaining the silence required by God's law or speaking the truth required by man's law. When a courageous student reveals a secret, he is brutally assaulted for an unforgivable betrayal of trust. Police arrive to investigate the assault just as St. Brendan's campus erupts into chaos at the discovery of a body propped against Century Oak, the school's treasured symbol of hope.
Tempers are short, emotions intense, and truths elusive. Lawyers and priests stoically protect confidences against mounting pressure from teachers, reporters, parents, and police demanding answers. Drew Sullivan and Darcy Flannigan risk their relationship and careers voicing opposing beliefs. Patrol Officer Liam Flannigan and Detective Trish Malone ignite a romance which could be just for fun... or maybe something more. The daily excitement at Dylan's pub gets even livelier when Darcy's former lover appears, eager to re-ignite their Paris affair. Trish and partner Joe Watson joyously antagonize everyone in their relentless investigation of the violent world of St. Brendan's.
Conflict escalates among the lawyers, the lovers, the police and the priests, forcing everyone to choose either silence or justice.
This went down smoother than a glass of single malt on a rainy day. Even more un-put-down-able than the first, especially with the familiar characters and places. I just want to continue stopping in at Dylan's to see how the gang's doing, share a pint with a fellow regular in his usual spot at the bar. ❤️
A quick, engaging read that keeps readers interested in how things will unfold! It was a great follow up to the first of the series, with a new plot and twist to keep the story going.
