Describing Hart's Flame Tree: Selected Poems, Charles Simic writes, "Kevin Hart is one of the finest poets writing in English today. I admire his erudition and his imagination, the way history, art, myth, literature, and many things come together in his poetry. . . . An absolutely original and indispensable poet."
This collection of poetry represents a lovely marriage of intuitive, intimate language and formal structure. Most of the poems are blank rather than free verse, though the meter is not fore-fronted in a regimented way. The poems are mysterious (hinting at a greater Mystery) but never frustratingly oblique, in fact I found them quite accessible (as someone who has somehow lost the habit of reading poetry).
