When Laura Clayton, a British teacher working in Beijing, goes missing, former Met detective‑turned‑private investigator Ed Vaughan is hired to find her.

But within hours of arriving in the Chinese capital, Vaughan and his partner Andy McEwan are violently attacked. The injuries are superficial, but the warning is stop looking for the girl, or else.

Working with a sharp young translator and a guarded consular officer, Vaughan and McEwan begin to piece together the truth behind Laura’s disappearance. But as the case leads them deeper into Beijing’s shadows, they uncover something far darker—and far more dangerous—than anyone expected.

Ed Vaughan returns in Kingsland — coming 14 July 2026.

This was a good story spoiled by the frequent use of blasphemous expletives - interestingly, all related to the Christian faith. No mention of Muhammad, Krishna, the Buddha, or anyone else. Always using the Name of Jesus, the Christ. Authors will have to answer for this constant breaking of the Fourth Commandment!

I thought that this was an okay read. A steady story that ended up confronting a challenging topic.

Well-developed characters, but a story line of sexual violence and political depravity didn't work for my reading preferences.

Fast moving thriller. Very good characters and realistic dialogue. The subject of the plot is disgusting but it is a fact.
