The Healer

Rate this book
“I wanted to be a healer so people would stop thinking I was bad. Because mastering the darkness turns you into a monster, whatever you do, even saving lives.”

Through darkness and water, the orphan Selene developed a unique healing technique and became the best healer of the Republic of Velula at age 25. That's not enough for the Council of Wise Men and Women to send her to the faes' kingdom of Druterra to heal the High Lady from a vicious illness. With the help of her fellow shadows and companions, Fay and Pari, and the wise advices from Althea, a 400-year-old spirit, Selene takes destiny into her own hands.

What started as an escape from the boring life of Velula, ends up revealing a lot about her past and who she really is. Everything she had dreamt growing up, seems to finally come to life; but reality can transform into a nightmare when you discover the real reason you’ve been always the outcast.

Between elemental powers, magic, identity secrets, new friends, sexy faes, mythological creatures and lands to discover; Selene will set on an adventure that will change her life forever

I'm saying this with all the love and appreciation I have for this story and its author: this book needs editing so so so bad.

I love this story to pieces, which is why it pains me to deprive this book of a star that would have been more than well deserved had my enjoyement of it not be spoiled by the poor translation.

Let me elaborate.
I felt like many phrases were translated word for word instead of picking up their idiomatic counterpart expression, which, in my opinion, caused the dialogues to sound weird and kind of grating.
For example, I came across this line, on chapter 5. "Look who’s talking, the guy who gets his hair done every three for two."
You see, in Italian we have this saying where someone does something ogni tre per due, which means very often. If you translate it literally to English, it makes no sense.
I think I was able to acknowledge this (and be bothered by it) because I know how Italians speak and I'm used to reading my books in English, which gave me the chance to compare the two and notice the difference a good translation can make.
This was only one of the many cases in which I felt this story could have benefited from a better editor, and I'm sad to say the entire novel and consequently my reading experience, suffered from the lack of one.
I kept to myself stuff like "This would sound great in Italian" or I cringed when I caught myself thinking about the idioms I would have used instead or the one that ere written, and all this mental revising got tiring after a while.

Bad translation aside, I loved this.
The story was so damn interesting, and very unique, as were the characters.
Elena Locatelli has a fresh imagination and was able to create a new, immersive world using elements that arevery well known in the romantasy universe.
The world-building was perfect; I was able to picture vividly every new setting the author presented, and I guess the fact that I got to do so while having trouble with the writing (read: the translation, not the prose. The prose was impeccable), proves the author is someone to keep an eye out for.
Selene is a very likeable main character and I love that this was a multi-pov kind of novel, because it gave me the opportunity to get to know the other characters a little more.
The romance was a little predictable, but I enjoyed it, nonetheless.
I know I was supposed to root for Selene and Killian, and I did, but my favorites were Chandra and Calder. What can I say, I have the softest spot for the grumpy and bitchy lady x flirty and sexy fae boy pairing.
If you know, you know.
You know.

Anyway, I had tons of fun with all of it and the story flowed so well I totally would have finished it in two hours had I not be super busy with work.

I'm gonna add the detailed chart later, and maybe add something to this review, as well.
Also, that cover alone is worth 10 stars.
Elena, if you're reading this: sei fantastica!
Can't wait for the next installment.

Definitely a good choice to pick!!

I feel a bit sad that I am among the few who haven't given it all five stars since when I picked it has only 11 ratings and all of them five stars. Actually, this work deserved a better rating if it wasn't for the language. Apparently, the author and the book are Italian so this book has a bit of translation issues. But I definitely urge all of you to pick this one despite its flaws.
The setting is so unique and the characters are well-established. The Female main character has unique capabilities that I have never read anywhere else. It is definitely in the category of stories that I want to read more about so I can't wait for the second book.
Plot: 4⭐/5
Characterization: 4⭐/5
Worldbuilding: 4⭐/5
Romance: 3.5⭐/5
Action: 2.5⭐/5

Blurb:
Selene is our FMC. She is an orphan and the best healer of Velula who wields water and darkness to cure illness. She has two shadows, Fay and Pari that can communicate, move and command other shadows. When the High lady of the Fae Kingdom, Druttera, falls ill they sought out the best Velulian healer and to there she travels.

Killian is our MMC. He was traveling the world for the last twenty-five years in search of something he doesn't yet know. In one such voyage, he meets our FMC.

The plot unravels along with figuring out a way to understand and destroy the infestation that had already taken the lives of the two high ladies of Ottacia and Velula and now troubling the High Lady of Druttera.

Where do I begin. I hadn't read a fantasy that hooked me like this in a long time... I don't think "Thanks goodness" anymore, but "Thanks Semmaven" haha. I loved this book for several reasons, starting with the narrative. I love how the author presents the story from the particular experience of the characters, the sequencing of the chapters kept me hooked all the time. I was very grateful no to go to the end of the book to browse ahead of time, because I loved the ending. Selene captivated me with her strength, determination , her powers (healing with water and darkness, coming out of the typical "goodness" expected from light... another level). All the characters are unique and leave you wanting to know more and more about thier particular stories and powers (I look forward to many more books). I loved the dedication and detail put into expressing thier emotions, which made me live them too. Without a doubt, Mivaria is a world that will captivate you and leave you wanting to continue exploring the mysteries of its lands and people. And of course, I also really enjoyed the spicy touch ;) ;). I can't wait to read the next book in the series!!!

I absolutely loved this book, this was my first fantasy book in god knows how long and I honestly didn't know if I would like it or not, the number of pages seemed too big in my eyes, but honestly, this book was a delight, the chapters were short, the world building compared to some fantasy books I've read was terrific and I really loved that the book was light and easy to read, like when I was reading it didn't feel like there was a gun held to my head cause that's how I usually feel with some genres but nope this book was really great.

Selen is witty, sarcastic, and a badass, I adored her courage for doing what she did and I really love her sarcastic humor which is a big plus but seriously she's fantastic.

Killian simply put was an amazing person and I loved his personality as well, his loyalty to those he considered family is unwavering and that is something that made me admire him even more.

Saul and Calder have my heart, these two are one of the best side characters, also Medea.

I really loved the found family trope in this book, there's just something soft about this trope that I adore.

I really liked the fact that the book had Multi POVs, it gives you insight into the characters and their thoughts which was really nice.

and lastly, the one part that got to me is that damn cliffhanger, I swear that cliffhangers are gonna be the death of me, but the book ended at such a nice point, that I absolutely am dying until the last book.

There are a lot of aspects about this book that I liked and disliked.

Let’s talk about dislike first, some of the dialogues were really weird and didn’t feel natural at all.

The romance wasn’t giving between the two main characters 😭 you know these TikToks where they guess which couples stay together after the book ? They’re definitely not it. There is a supposed element of fated mates and legendary love between them but I didn’t feel a single thing unfortunately, no tension, no sweetness and no passion. I tried to love them from the bottom of my heart but unfortunately they fell short.

Also another thing was the two main plot lines used as the synopsis for the book about her being a healer and healing the high lady we not really highlighted/ that important throughout the book even though it was used as the grabbing point of the book.

Unfortunately k probably won’t be reading book 2 or continuing the story 💔

Now about what I liked, I liked the pacing of the book and the amount of elements and subplots of it. It felt so easy to read and keep up with and there was never too much information or too much description.

I’ve been in such a bad reading slump since the beginning of the year and I’m happy to say this is the first book that I have been able to finish since the start of this month. I loved the characters and the magic system and magic abilities.

i'm starting to dislike reading new authors because they are so good and my favorite book changes every single time i finish a new one.

but i'm here for it.

this book is, like many others, just perfect. i loved it, every second of the time i spent reading it was perfect. i was wrapped up in this new world and for a second i felt i lived there with these characters. the action kept me intrigued the whole time and at the end i wanted more and more.

even though this is a book written in the third person, you don't feel it like that. i don't usually like these books, but switching perspectives from one character to another just makes the story better and more interesting.

then the plot was amazing. it has everything you want: magic, light, darkness, soulmates, witchers, and healers. and secrets. it's an amazing book and i'm happy i got the chance to read it.

i loved it and i feel everyone who loves a good fantasy book would agree. you need to read it if you want a great fantasy story that will keep you on your toes and give you everything you want to find in a book.

thank you elena for sending me the book and making my sick days better with this beautiful story.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

4.5/5⭐️

This book was so good! From the moment I started I knew that this was gonna be an amazing book. I liked this world so much and fell in love with the characters. Selene was such an amazing FMC, she was strong , her determination was one to admire, her powers were simply amazing and a mix I hadn’t seen on a FMC. All the characters are truly unique in their own way and I loved them for that. The action and plot was amazing and it never bored me. It had amazing elements that I loved like magic, soulmates, healers, secrets, etc.

Even tough I’m not usually a lover of third person point of view this book was amazing and seeing the different points of view made me feel closer to the characters.

I absolutely recommend this book and can’t wait to see what else Elena Locatelli writes because her debut was simply incredible. I also can’t wait to see we’re the story will take us in the second book!

Thank you Elena Locatelli for letting me be able to experience this story before it was published.

Okay so this book is 5 stars. I finished in a day, I couldn’t put it down. It’s pretty fast paced and I love a strong FMC that doesn’t make me scream internally for the first half of the book because of how overly proud she is (some Celaena/Ailen vibes but not as intense, which I like) Also the POV of other side characters definitely ADDS to the book and doesn’t feel superfluous.

BUT BEFORE YOU READ: I wish I had known going into this that the author was Italian and that the book was translated… I came here to give this book four stars because of how much editing it needs. While there are only a few sentences throughout the book I genuinely couldn’t understand, a lot of the edit needs are grammatical. Let me paste an example: “If I had had another chance to leave, I would have chosed it, but I didn’t.” I think being aware of the translation aspect is important because it would have allowed me to be a bit more forgiving of the writing while reading the book.

Regardless though this read is WORTH IT and I’m so happy with how it progressed and I really couldn’t predict what would happen at all. Very happy to know there will be another.

This book captivated me step by step.
When Elena gave me the chance to read it I didn't know where It'll take me and I was surprisingly taken aback.
I would have liked to live in Druterra and meet in person all the characters in the book and exchange a few words with them.
I felt empathy with the main character Selene, her strenght and resilience when things weren't easy have won me over.
Fay and Pari have my heart and I always like to read in fantasy novels about familiars who help the protagonists, in this case shadows.
My favourite character althrough is another female who is quite her opposite in an interesting way. I loved her story arc, her evolution, her personality, but mostly her nickname.
In addition to the worldbuilding, I liked the linear and direct writing that Elena uses and the various powers related to the elements and not.
I found the dialogues sparkling and funny, especially the jokes between the protagonists.
I'm sure there are still some secrets to unreveal and mysteries to solve and I can't wait to read more about this world!

The Healer was such a refreshing read. Sometimes I read books and it feels very similar to other books I've read, but this one truly has elements I've never seen before. First, the FMC is not only a healer but has *don't mess with me* energy. I've seen healers in other books, but usually not as a main character. Second, the shadows that Selene and some of the other characters have are so unique and cute. Imagine having little shadows that are just your friends with you your whole life! Third, I'm a huge fan of Avatar: The Last Airbender and the powers in this book remind me of that! There's water/blood-bending and many characters have elemental manipulation powers like in ATLA. Also, love me a good fae book and this book is full of those too.
I wanted to comment on something I've seen in other reviews as well-- there is a bit of a language discrepancy because the book was initially written in Italian and translated to English. If you are seeing those reviews and worried about that, just know it is not relevant enough to change the experience of the book. There was a sentence here or there that the context may have changed based on word choice, however usually you could use context clues even if the sentence is not exactly how we would say it in English. Just wanted to throw that out there for anyone on the fence due to that.

I thoroughly enjoyed this ARC and as always love to support Indie authors ❤️

This was fun! I had so much fun reading this book, it's extremely sj maas coded, as there are elements that a maas enthusiastic would love like found family and inner circle, powerful mains, soul mates, magic and gruesome monsters. I genuinely think this book would benefit from another round of editing, but considering Elena is an indie author I understand the absence of a team of editors isn't a shoe easy to fill.
Selene had a lot of potential and reminded me of the reasons I fell in love with characters like aelin, strong willed and determinate. Although some plot twist were easy to spot, this book still surprised me and most important entertained me during a period when reading doesn't come as easily to me.
I loved that chandra was described as albinos and I had the most fun reading of her journey. I'm honestly found of everyone lol this was just fun and I wish it would get more interest from people.

This book was so good! I love fantasy books and it is the main genre I read, so I was pleasantly surprised when I started reading this one and realised how different it was to most other fantasy books. The concept is unique and something I haven’t seen before, and I really connected with the main character, Selene. The book has many twists and turns and was overall a great read. I can’t wait for the next one!

✨The Healer by Elena Locatelli✨

This is Elena’s first fantasy romance novel and wow, this did not disappoint! It always takes me a minute to get into fantasy books if I take a break from them for awhile but man this story really pulled me in from the get go.

I absolutely love Killian and Calder and loved all of the drama and underlying romance! This gave me avatar the last airbender meets throne of glass and I can not wait for book 2!!

great book

Fun read with Fae, witches and mythical creatures. This is part of a series but does not end on a cliffhanger- the primary story is complete and set up for the next journey. Spice level- mild.
Good world building but not overwhelming or over- complex.

This is the third book by this author that I’ve read. I love how quick and easy her writing is to read. I also enjoy how witty the banter is. No word is wasted. It’s also very impressive that English is not the authors first language. Can’t wait for the next book to come out!

Honestly I read this book solely based on the fact that the cover is gorgeous. I didn't even really read what it was about before I picked it up. But oh my goodness, it captivated me from the first page. I had such a hard time putting it down to go to sleep and work. I loved all of the characters, the world building was amazing. I can't wait to read the next one!!

I'm Elena, the author of The Healer.
If you are reading this, thank you so much to be here. I really hope the blurb, the cover or other people's reviews have intrigued you enough to give The Healer a try.

In some readers' reviews you may find that the editing or the translations have been criticized (which is perfectly fine), since those were constructive critics, I took the time to read the book from page 1 and focus on those details that the readers pointed out. I edited it since the first version released on March 15th (edit April 5th) and I feel some way of saying that may sound weird in English are now better expressed.

I'm an indie author, and as an indie author I had to do mostly by myself. English is not my first language, but I do read in it most of the time and I want other people to enjoy my book as much as I enjoyed writing it (I made the mistake of writing it firstly in Italian and then the translation took me forever). So, if you find any typos or mistakes, don't hesitate to point it out.

Thank you so much and I really hope you will love the book!
Love, Elena.
