Forbidden Descendants #10-full story

Every Time My Heart Breaks

Rate this book
How do you make yourself fall in love with someone?

After his family friend, Chloe Ryan, is traumatized by a disturbed ex-boyfriend, Luke Hamilton is “encouraged” to step up and be the kind of partner she needs.
Problem is, he’s never been in love before.

He’s not one to give up, though. His stubborn, competitive nature, mixed with the dutiful loyalty he inherited from his parents, makes it impossible for him to say no. And romancing Chloe becomes priority number one.

But his feisty contender gives him the challenge of a lifetime when she’d rather argue with him than accept a simple compliment. Chloe demands honest, genuine feelings from someone before she’ll even think about opening her heart again, and since Luke refuses to back down from his determined quest, he decides to grow some feelings.

Except, uh, yeah… That’s easier said than done since he has no idea how to even begin the process of falling.

---

Chloe is a simple woman with simple wants. All she’d like is to work her job, find a partner to share her life with, and then grow a family with him.

But apparently, that’s just too much to ask for.

After her ex kidnaps and terrorizes her, Chloe is suddenly put on six weeks of leave from her job to recover, she can’t handle it when anyone touches her, and her big dream of the simple life seems more impossible to reach than ever.

Until Luke bulldozes his way into the picture, determined to help her through her rough patch and promising her everything she’s ever wanted.

The problem is Chloe loved Luke way back when she was young, and no one’s ever broken her heart the way he did when he didn't even notice her in return. No way is she going to risk more heartbreak at his hands now. Chloe becomes just as determined to push him away as he is to stick by her side.

Let the battle of wills begin.

I adore Linda Kage's original 'Forbidden Men' series and Pick Ryan was always my absolute favorite so when I saw his daughter had a book I grabbed it asap. I didn't know that this wasn't the first spin-off in this series but either way I enjoyed it. It followed Chloe Ryan and Luke Hamilton (Quinn's son). There was a lot going on and they went through a lot, but I felt they were perfect for one another and I enjoyed it a lot.

First Impressions
Every Time My Heart Breaks is the most recent release into the "Forbidden Men Descendants" and this is the epic romance that happens between Luke and Chloe. This is such a strong unrequited love and seeing their journey was absolutely delightful. And while I enjoyed everything up to the ending, I am NOT okay with how Linda Kage handled the ending of this story. I just don't understand why she did it at all and I am not a fan of authors doing this to characters (this is ROMANCE not regular fiction) so I might have to take a break from this author until I get over my upset lol

First Line
Well it was official, my taste in men sucked ass.

The Main Protagonists
The Hero: Luke Hamilton
Luke is the son of Quinn and Zoey. He has no interest in a big career like his brother, and is much more interested in the bar scene despite how his family feels about it. He is the older of the descendents group and has a solid head on his shoulders and is much more responsible in ways that people don't expect.

The Heroine: Chloe Ryan
Chloe, is the daughter of Pick and Eva. She has been in love with Luke for years and has hidden it beneath a prickly exterior. But after her trauma, Luke is the only one she trusts.

Summary
Every Time My Heart Breaks is a story that begins with our hero and heroine meeting in high school and them having a connection to each other. At first Chloe, has a crush on another boy, but when Luke is kind to her and accepts her for who she is, she falls hard for him. She works hard the next few years in losing the weight she feels matters to him, and only to be rejected in a way he doesn't even see the hurt he has put on her. And thus begins their angst filled relationship. But when Chloe is kidnapped by a stalker, and traumatized, Luke is the only man she holds to and can fully trust, a kind of trust not even her parents can have with her. And when Luke learns the truth, her father gives him a real talk and as Luke starts to try to connecting with Chloe, he starts to find out what love truly is all about.

What I Loved
The actual romance between Chloe and Luke was so so well done. I love a great unrequited love story and most especially in a pining heroine. (I know everyone else in the romance community is obsessed with pining heroes, but there is something about a pining heroine I adore) and I love that we get the flashback in the BEGINNING of the story. Too many authors just go back and forth. And what I really like about Linda Kage is that she doesn't do that. She keeps it minimized and doesn't drag it out. I really enjoyed their connection to each other. And when we see what happens to Chloe and how Luke is her rock through the hardest part of her life, it just melted my heart. And the way in which her parents really understand what she needs, and makes sure Luke gives it to her, I became so endeared by. Such a wonderful installment in how the romance itself was executed and how Pick (the dad) sets her up with Luke, yeah these parents really like to matchmake their kids, all except for Ten that is.

What I Struggled With

Overall View
Every Time My Heart Breaks has a romance that will endear you deeply, it showcases the damages of trauma and the path to healing...

Favorite Quote(s)
“Size doesn’t mean shit. Small or extra-large, you’re fucking beautiful. Inside and out. Don’t ever forget that.”

I had to break your heart before I desired you in the way you needed me to.

“Don’t ever…” I rasped, my voice barely audible. “Compare me to that monster again. He wanted to possess and own you. I value you more than I do my own life.” Her lips parted, and she whispered my name. A pained shudder wracked my frame. Wincing through it, I shifted my thumb, just barely skimming it over Chloe’s windpipe. “I just want to worship you with everything I have.” She exhaled and her head came back as lust sparked in her gaze. A hoarse groan escaped my throat, and I crushed my mouth to hers.

Recommendation For Reading Order
I do recommend reading in order if you can (including the novella's--they are free on the author's website)

Steam/Spice Explanations

Simmering cup of tea---soft warm touches and light intimacy
Warmin' by the fire- a medium level of sexual tension, a balance of sexual and emotional intimacy, lighter on the details in the sexual moments.
Steamin' up the room -the sexual content is more explicit in the language and tone, heavier amount of sexual scenes.
Blazing fire to the building-The prime focus is the sex scenes, scorching hot, and could burn one. Less focus on the emotional intimacy to the relationship.

4⭐

I got this ARC this week and I totally bawled my eyes out! Both happy and sad tears were shed again because of this legend, and I can’t help but want to give her all my money so she’ll keep writing! She is quickly becoming one of my favorites!

What I liked about the book:
1. I love a good childhood flashback, and this book had a great one! Not only did it solidify why Chloe treats Luke the way she does, but it accomplished two more things for me:

- It made me love Luke so much! Seriously, high school Luke was high school Britt’s TOTAL JAM. Bad boy with a kickass car, senior to her freshman, and a guy that used inappropriate humor to make her feel better about the bullies. Like, I would have hardcore been in lust with this guy in high school.

-It made me love Chloe so much! Seeing the shit she had to go through because of her weight in high school, made me feel like she wasn’t just another skinny blonde main character. There were roots that were fully fleshed out and explained why she was the way she was!

2. Linda Kage always seems to do a great job with her takes on mental health and keeping everything grounded in reality for some truly shitty situations. In this book, I especially loved how after the unfortunate events that took place, it showed them both traumatized and not just Chloe. I feel like books like this tend to just focus on the main victim of the trauma and don’t appreciate what the people around them are going through as well.

Kage did a great job showing Chloe’s trauma and reactions to things such as hugs or any other form of contact, but she also did a great job showing how the situation messed up Luke (aka her savior). Even though he was not the one tortured by Chloe’s crazy ex-, something like this would definitely haunt you if you had to witness it, and I applaud Kage for taking his trauma into account.

Also, the way that Kage was able to show how Chloe was resistant to everyone BUT Luke was so beautifully sad because it just made sense. This was the man who rescued her, who saw her at her worst and fought for her. While I know everyone reacts differently and this may not be the case for everyone in this situation, I loved how because of the experience they shared together, she did allow him to comfort and protect her, even when she wouldn’t let others come close to her. Every night he would join her in her childhood bedroom just so she could sleep seriously made me fall in love with him even more.

3. After the above bullet points, you can see how this would be a truly emotional book for me.

Kage has this unique ability to rip my heart to the tiniest of shreds and then carefully piece it back together more full than it was before. I cried reading this book. Not as many times as Insta-Family, but still more than the average book I read. (Please note, I am not a crier but Linda Kage makes me cry…a lot).

I think the main driver of her books bringing me to tears often is she writes about real issues, not fake bullshit drama. At no point do these characters pull the insufferable tropes I can’t stand in other books, like thinking “I should split for his/her own good” at the 80% mark in the book. It’s all very relatable in a lot of ways, and in the ways it isn’t for me personally (thank god!), it is realistic. Like, this could happen to your next-door neighbor or your childhood best friend.

4. I loved the tie in with Insta-Family and seeing what happened on the Chloe/Luke side of things when we got the Lucy/Vaughn side in Insta-Family.

5. I loved all the spicy scenes and how they weren’t fade to black, but I definitely wanted him to be a talker! He was far too quiet for how sexually teasing he was!

What could have been better:
1. I really wish Luke wasn’t so much of a himbo. So many times I wanted to metaphorically wring his neck for being downright foolish. How could he not tell he has been in love with her just as long??? How could he not see the things he did and said???

2. After finally realizing that this is part of a second generation of stories written by Linda Kage, it made a lot more sense to me why there were so many people and names being thrown at me that it was hard to keep everyone straight. However, having not read anything but Insta-Family, it was super hard at times to remember who was who. Guess I just have to read more!

Final Thoughts:
I highly recommend this book and Linda Kage in general. Check her out if you enjoy Colleen Hoover, Raina Ash, or Piper Lawson.

Final Rating: 4 heartbreaking stars!

Thank you to Booksirens and Linda Kage for the free advanced review copy of this book. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Love Chloe and Luke! Every Time My Heart Breaks is sweet and angsty. Chloe has been in love with Luke as long as she can remember but he keeps breaking her heart when he constantly puts her into the friend zone.
It’s take a while for Luke to grow up and catch up with Chloe’s feelings and by then she is very leery of letting her heart get involved.
I enjoyed this entertaining and sweet story but I got as frustrated as Chloe waiting for Luke to get his act together.

entertaining book, enjoyed it until the end when it got a bit too sad for me. i feel like it was just so much tragedy all at once and kinda rushed together too. it all just took a turn so quickly, but i think i’m just a bit too sensitive too.
death of a spouse is a big trigger for me and i prefer it to stay out of the books i read, even when it’s surrounding a side character. :/

( i know, i probably sound pathetic but i’m just extremely sensitive, and want books to be an escape from reality, not remind me of how unfair life can be! )

I gobbled this story up with so much gusto. Holy moly - I was sucked in from the very first page. Then I was taken aback a little by the flashback. Flashbacks don't always work for me in books - but this one was perfection. It set up Chloe and Luke's story perfectly, gave me all the feels for both characters, and let me invest, fully, into their frenemies to lovers storyline.

There's a lot of drama in this story - and I was here for most of it. I love a good push/pull storyline. I loved the banter. I adored how Luke and Chloe cared for each other in a way that neither one of them expected or maybe even were entirely comfortable with, but in a way that felt so second nature - it actually felt unnatural to be apart. What can I say - I love a good "desperate love" storyline.

Were they occasionally exasperating?

Yes!

But not in a way that I found unforgiveable, and not in a way that made it a chore to read. They each had a lot of baggage to sort through, and trauma to unpack. It wasn't difficult to be patient with them as they fumbled and flopped their way into their own love story. They were adorable together - and then they were scorching hot together - and in the end, they were just perfect together.

My only quibble with the story is how heavy it got toward the end. I mean...heavy. In a way I wasn't expecting and it sort of dragged me down into my emotions in a way that I struggled to come back from. I think this is likely attributed to my own state of mind while reading the book. The situation was handled with all sorts of bittersweet emotion, it was just an emotional gut punch that I still feel like I'm recovering from, and to that end - stole some of the joy of the ending from me.

Would I still recommend it?

Absolutely!

Just know to have some kleenex on hand and bolster your heart for some of these emotional punches. It was 100% worth the read, and I adored Luke and Chloe so much. I cannot wait for more from this series! ~ Shelly, 4 Stars

Behind the Story: Initially, I didn’t intend for any of my second generation of Forbidden Men stories to become full-length novels. I pretty much wanted them to be little freebie extras to show where everyone-is-now updates. But The Revenge Plan kind of ruined that for me, and then more and more of them snowballed into big, long stories I couldn’t seem to stop!

Another goal of the second-gen stories was that they didn’t have to follow the “forbidden” theme, so I came up with a title for one of them to be, “The Opposite of Forbidden,” and from there, I had to figure out what would make that couple the opposite of forbidden…which would be if people actually wanted and expected them to get together, right?

So I had this scene worked up in my head where Pick talks to Luke, basically telling him, “Look, I don’t trust anyone else with my baby girl but you,” and then I tried to build the rest of the story up around that.

After it was all said and done, “The Opposite of Forbidden” no longer felt like the best title to me, so I changed it to “Every Time My Heart Breaks,” even though the entire reason the story was created in the first place was to revolve around the original title…which just goes to show you how wonky and strange my brain is, I guess! Wow..At first I thought I was reading a young adult book as it centered on high school aged kids and lots of characters.
Then we move maybe 10 years ahead. Something horrible happens which is the big thing. The author handles a bit breezy but I slept last night so breezy helped!!

Parts were strung out and so many characters were my criticisms but the main characters were interesting and grew to good romance.

Book ARC by book sirens for honest review.

Meet Luke, handsome, protective, dedicated but also unsure about love. Clueless about his feelings for Chloe until they are pushed into a situation where they need each other. The need for sleep becomes extremely hard to come by unless these two are laying together. They’ve known each other since childhood, she also developed a crush on him during her teen years but tried let go of it after he stomped and tore her teenage heart to pieces. Enemies to lovers. These two endured a traumatic event and need each other.

I loooved these two and their growth, their evolvement of their feelings and him finally realizing what love is. Love seeing characters from LK’s other books, looking forward to more from the spin offs of the FM series. Love Love Love.

Received an ARC from Booksirens.

I felt that the story was rushed since I do not feel the connection that I was hoping for (I am hoping for some real connections like with Sarah and Brandt).

Luke was portrayed in the early books (FM second generation stories) as some happy-go-lucky guy, but in this one, I liked how his character grew up and became responsible. Luke is such a loyal, and smart guy which will be there for you when you need a friend or a shoulder to cry on. On the other hand, Chloe is caring, fun, and loyal. They are perfect for each other.

I felt bad for Julian, but as the saying goes by, everything happens for a reason. Maybe his book, or Trick story will be written next.

Recommendation:
Will definitely recommend this, but it still depends what do readers like or dislike. If ever, give this a try.

I really liked this thrilling, heart wrenching and amazing novel. I really felt for the main characters and wished them the best throughout the whole novel.

I loved this author’s writing style and really liked the plot too. I liked the characters and the romance aspect of the novel too. It was great reading about such a strong leading lady character.

This novel was simply a great read and I’m sure that other readers will love this novel as much as I did and so I’m giving it 5 stars.

ARC from Booksirens. Big thank you for them!!

I just wanna start this off by saying it felt so good diving back into the Forbidden Men world, it really feels like I’m returning back home to family after a long period of time. I missed reading about them so much, every time the first generation was mentioned or made an appearance in a scene, I got so excited.

Now in terms of Chloe and Luke, boy was this a rollercoaster of emotions. The amount of times I teared up and cried throughout this book was insane. My heart especially went out to Chloe. Literally every time her heart broke, I could physically feel the ache in mine right side along hers. I loved her character so much, she may just be one of my favorite second generation characters as of yet. And Luke…oh Luke, what am I going to do with him. He’s such a lovable, clueless goofball. I did want to throttle him a couple of times though because of how oblivious he can be. The man’s literally had to be told that Chloe was in love with him since childhood for him to get it 😭 but I love him nonetheless. But once his eyes were wide open and the lengths he went to to prove his love for Chloe was genuine and real was everything. I can’t wait to see which characters of the second generation’s book is coming out next because I’m already itching for more!!

Linda Kage is a writer I never would have heard about if not for Booksiren, and what a loss that would have been. Her stories touch my heart, and this one had the added bonus of ripping my heart out. Yes, my family might have been watching tv while I was sobbing like a little baby, their words not mine.
I’m really enjoying the descendants of the FM series. I am an absolute sucker for the found family trope. I know that’s not an accurate description of the friends/family in this series but I’m sticking with it.
Chloe and Luke have known each other forever. Chloe’s always had a crush on Luke but he is too blind to notice. When Chloe goes through a trauma it is Luke who is there beside her all the way. Is Chloe finally going to be able to get her man?
This story has everything a romance reader loves. There’s chemistry, banter, humour, spicy times and some sadness thrown into the mix.

Fin

From the moment Luke Hamilton comes to Chloe Ryan's rescue in high school, defending her against bullies, she fell head over heels for him even knowing nothing would ever come from it as he was one of the cool kids and she was a chubby nobody. She never saw him as anything other than her white knight and when she's traumatized by an ex boyfriend years later it's Luke who once again comes to her rescue...helping her work through her trauma, as well as his own feelings of helplessness in not being there for her sooner. As the healing process starts for them both, Luke finally comes to the realization that his feelings for Chloe have always been about more than friendship and now's the chance for him to admit the truth of what's been obvious to others for a very long time.

This book starts out with a flashback, a scene from high school of Chloe being bullied for her weight. Luke's definitely the cool kid with the cool car, a senior to the freshman Chloe, and it was a heartwarming start to a story that quickly turned heavy. As teens, Luke didn't hesitate in defending Chloe and I can completely understand why she fell for him in that moment and why he became a lifelong savior to her as he's seen her at her worst and never turned away. From the start readers see Luke as sweet and caring, a bit clueless at times, but once he decides on a course of action he's all in...becoming a man on a mission. The romance between him and Chloe might've started out a bit awkwardly (being told he HAS to fall in love with her) but it becomes obvious that this is just a push to do something he ultimately wants to do. It's a bit of a bumpy journey though as Chloe wants something real, something meaningful with Luke, and with a show of strength and determination she demands all he has to give.

Chloe's an immensely likable heroine, someone who's been through a lot in her life. From teenage bullies to a crazed ex she's been put through the wringer and still survived. Her most recent trauma though, dished out by an ex, has left her very bruised both inside and out, left her full of fear and a desire to not be touched. After this dark event, Luke's the only one she lets into her life as she still sees him as her rescuer, and together they both start working through their feelings...which will require a lot of tissues for readers.

This is an intense romance at times, particularly after Chloe's attack. Ms. Kage dealt with this heavy issue in a realistic and respectful way though, showing the effects not only on the victim but on those around the victim too. From this moment on the connection between the main couple turned sweet and sensual, becoming even more protective and loving, while giving Chloe the support she needs to move on from her fears to become strong-willed and to stand her ground. There's so much to like about this book and so much that will resonate with readers. Readers will find themselves captivated, hurting and loving right alongside the characters as Ms. Kage expertly plays with their emotions. Amongst all these good things are a few less than perfect things. First, is the silly reason given for why Luke must fall in love with Chloe. It created an awkward start and leant a bit of superficiality to their early feelings. There's also a slew of characters who show up throughout the story, friends and family from previous books, which makes for a rather crowded narrative with names quickly forgotten. Despite these small quibbles, this is still a powerful read, one full of heart and soul that breaks your heart before building it back up and leaving you happily sated.

Read this on Christmas Eve and it was the best way to spend the night!
When i read what happened to Chloe in Insta-Family i absolutely knew i had to read her story right after it was released and i got so lucky to apply for it on Booksirens. Thank you so much for the ARC!

I was afraid I had placed too many expectations on the story, because if I was sure of one thing before reading it, it was that it was going to deal with trauma from the very beginning and i didn't know how Linda Kage would write about it. I'm so relieved to say that it was sooo real, not cheesy, not superficial, it felt real and it was enough like that.

The bickering between the main couple, the cute flashbacks, the trauma-bonding thing... it all happend so natural and fluid that i coudn't believe i was already 80% of the book when i checked. I swear the way Linda writes her romance stories is awesome. You may thing that after writing more than 12 books about this huge friends-like-family members she would run out of stories o repeat the same thing, but nope. Every one of her characters are incredible and unique but also loyal, noble, and beloved... i adore them! It doesn't matter how bad or shitty some situations are, you know there's gonna be this huge found family support that will make everything better just by reading them together, even if the situation is really sad and hopeless.

Of course i loved Chloe and Luke. We understand why Chloe is the way she is and how she became this strong, attractive woman with goals to achieve. And i kind of understand her desire to have someone that fully loves her (i mean ...we have all these wonderful love stories surrounding her family members and friends, who wouldn't want that for herself T-T). On the other side we have absolutely charming and good boy Luke... he had to be perfect and sweet Hamilton's kid right? I just love him as much as i love his dad. I love how direct, persevering and determined he is. And yes, he may be a clueless dork sometimes, but the man has determination and no one can deny it.

Why i didn't give the book 5 stars? Because of the whole "i-HAVE-to-fall-in-love-with-her" thing. got the same reactions of all the other boys when they got to know and asked about what was happening. I knew it would be my least favorite thing about the book ever since I first read it from the synopsis, and i didn't get it wrong (i didn't hate it though. i just don't like when a main character doesn't play a fair love game so i knew that Luke forcing himself to fall in love wouldn't be my most beloved thing in the book). But what i didn't expect was the way Chloe reacted. I won't say more about it because i don't want to make spoilers, but the girl just made me like her even more and i'm glad that this wasn't treated like in any other books or movies that have this kind of plotlines.

Of course i cried... how not to with the big things that happen in this book... but i also smiled quite a lot. It's definitely worth the reading, and if you haven't read the other books in the Forbidden Men and Forbidden Men Descendants series i don't know what are you waiting for. They are ALL awesome. And you'll understand better some of the side characters and their references.

BUT if you don't want to read that many books, i recommend you to read at least the Insta-Family one, which has some scenes that happen at the beginning of Everytime my Heart Breaks. It's not necessary though, you can read this book as a standalone too.

I was given this ARC for an honest review.

**********Contains Spoilers**********

Wow, I loved this book but man was it an emotional roller coaster. You’ve been warned to keep your tissues handy. I really like how Linda handled the aftermath of Chloe’s abd*ction by her stalker ex, and the things that caused triggers. I loved that she didn’t shy away from Luke’s trauma after finding Chloe the way he did, and their other “family members” reactions when Chloe would shy away from their touch. Yes, it hurt them but they fully understood. It was a way for Luke and Chloe to bond over what happened considering they’ve been flinging back insults at each other for years. There’s a fine line between love and hate.

Luke, saw Chloe at her worst and stayed with her when she begged him as he wanted to leave so he could find the handcuff keys so he could free her. She didn’t want to be left alone. Luke stepped up when she needed her. Well they both needed each other. I enjoyed how their relationship progressed. It felt like a natural way for them to get closer, as they held each other up after Chloe’s abd*ction, and their relationship didn’t feel forced at all. Even if Pick, Chloe’s dad planted the idea of Luke and Chloe being together as he could see that they cared for each other even through all of their insults.

I don’t blame Chloe when she took awhile to accept that Luke had real feelings for her considering Luke broke something in her when she was a teen without even realising. So she was trying to protect what was left of her heart. All I can say is when the s*xual tension between them finally explodes, it’s hot as f*ck. Man, Luke is so bloody clueless most of the book. How could he not realise that he’s been in love with Chloe for years? Lol he’s a total himbo. Luke and Chloe have so much passion and chemistry. I smiled, laughed and cried along with the characters while reading this book.

The end of this book made me ugly cry, as it totally broke me. Yes, I was kind of expecting it to happen due to one of blurbs shown in the Forbidden Men Next Generation WIP on Linda’s website. It was such a heart breaking but beautiful scene. I loved that there was also a couple of easter eggs relating to the next books as it made me happy that he eventually finds his way to living again. I grieved and could totally feel their pain so Linda did as amazing job of evoking readers emotions. I’m looking forward to reading more books from Linda Kage in the future. I’d definitely recommend this book, series, universe and author to everyone.

Wow. It’s a good thing I don’t have to describe this book in one word because I just don’t think it would be possible. It was so amazing in so many ways that it’s hard to think about where to even begin gushing about it. I loved the characters, the plot, the progression of events, the character development and the way that everything came together. It was beautiful and inspiring along with heart wrenching and heart stopping. Yeah, this one is going to take you in a very intense ride. There were times that had me angry, in tears, raging at a character, and moments that had me pausing to take in everything I was reading.

Chloe and Luke have a connection that runs deeper than their families being thinker than thieves. And even though Chloe is willing to admit to having a crush on Luke when they were growing up, Luke takes a little longer to pick up on things. And maybe needs a little help along the way. But when Chloe goes through a traumatic event and Luke is there for her like no one else, the two of them find themselves closer than ever. But it also has Chloe worrying that it’s the event that brought her and Luke together and not their actual feelings.

Chloe is such a strong character and she uses her sarcasm and quick wit as a defense mechanism. Something I find myself relating to! And Luke does his best to be a gentleman but something about Chloe always brings out his own snarky side. But reading about these two trading barbs and snark was just as romantic as the most romantic novel. The way their families interfered was definitely more on the cute and endearing side than the annoying side, which I have unfortunately found with some books that had the interfering family trope. This one though, had me loving each and every family member and their relationship with Chloe and Luke.

This one is definitely going to be on my shelf for a long time to come as it’s one I’m going to be reading again and again. This is the first novel by Linda Kage but after what this book put me through, it’s absolutely not going to be the last. I can’t wait to read whatever she comes out with next! I certainly recommend this one and can’t wait until people in my reader groups get to get ahold of this one so we can talk about it together.

So first of all, this got me out of my reading slump since I finished it in 24 hours after not reading for over a month.

Sadly, I didn't enjoy it as much as I wanted to. I did have a good time reading it but I just wanted a lot more. I think I wanted more ties with the previous book in the series. Surprisingly, we got no scenes between Lucy and Chole which felt super weird to me because I feel a scene between those two characters was crucial considering the events that unfold in both this book and also Insta-Family. It might be here where having such a huge cast of characters could be a disadvantage maybe?

The romance was okay. I wanted kinda of enemies to lovers which I didn't get. The dynamic between Chole and Luke had potential but the whole

Generally, I've also realised that Kage has a thing for having characters like someone secretly and thinking of the fourteen or so books I've read by her really does support this theory. Do I really mind this? Not really. I pretty much know what I'm going to get with her books which can be good if I'm in the right mood for them. So, I will continue reading the other books in the series but definitely time them for when I feel like I'll enjoy them.

This book was super heavy though and I think the pacing definitely felt a bit off because I needed more time between the epilogue and everything that just happened because that time skip had not happened for me as the reader and just felt super jarring. I would have preferred no epilogue or no set up for the next book. It also did make me cry so even though this wasn't my favourite Kage book, it still had a strong impact.

Chloe has been in love with Luke since her freshman year of high school when he lifted up her spirits after she overhears her crush talking smack about her at a school dance. But being older than her, he has no idea how much that moment meant to her or that ever since, he's broken her heart time after time. Fast forward to present day, and she still loves him despite her best efforts to not and since he is good friends with her younger brother, Trick, and because he works for her dad, he is around a lot! Chloe tries to get over him the best way she can, which involves dating other men. Too bad though that her taste in men is so atrocious. Case in point is the last guy she dated Dex, who she ended up getting a restraining order from.

It wasn't until I read a little bit in and after the abduction that I recognized I remembered these characters from a prior book, which was Vaughn's and Lucy's story. Ive also read the previous series that seemed to be the generation with their parents. It was nice to revisit characters, especially a story that was brought up previously. This book focuses on Chloe and Luke. Honestly, Luke was oblivious the majority of the book and Chloe frustrated me because I felt like she held a grudge and punished Luke for not knowing about her feelings and returning them on her timeline. It felt unfair and her stubbornness and reluctance wasn't even pertaining to the traumatic incident she experienced, which she seemed to have mild ptsd but to deal rather well with, but was more geared towards her anger at him not noticing her when they were younger. As if the fact she started as a 14yo kid going after a 18/19yo wasn't an issue, although it wasn't brought up. Luke's determination made them coming together so much sweeter to see them build a friendship and connection even when they didn't recognize that's what they were doing. I loved seeing their journey and getting closure on what happened to her, seeing as how it was mentioned but not dwelled on in the previous book. I did feel like the thriller aspect and what happened with the stalker although was a point of the story, seemed kind of like a side story. I would have liked to see more with that. I hated what happened with Julian and Nia. I figured something of that effect would happen, just not to that extent. Overall, once again, I loved all the characters and their comraderie with each other. And can't wait to read the stories of the other characters. Especially Julian and Tricks. I was absolutely obsessed with the Forbidden Men series. I think most of them were 5 star reads for me and I still smile like a loon whenever I remember them. But I think it's been about 10 years since I've read them, and I had no idea there were books for the next generation. And then I was in this one and it hit me like a stack of bricks. I'll be honest, I've had this on my TBR forever, but the blurb made me hesitate. I like a man who's all in and does the chasing.

Luckily for me I decided to read this anyway because that blurb feels like it's for a different book despite it being right. From the second I picked this up I was lost to my family; I couldn't put it down. I honestly forgot how completely amazing Linda Kage is. Her words, her ability to make me obsess over the characters and just be swept into this world with them.

Luke was not at all what I was expecting. Holy sweetness and perfection batman. Even though I was completely team Chloe, and I knew exactly where she was coming from, I loved Luke. And every single time he opened his mouth something stupid came out, but it was so firmly wrapped in love and care for his family.

Luke and Chloe together were such a massive amount of emotions and I just strapped in and went along with the ride. Some of the twists and turns were predictable, others had me gasping and clutching my chest. The emotions in the last 10ish percent were actually hard for me to read. I had to keep putting the book down to clear my eyes but then I needed to keep reading so I had to pick it back up.

I finished reading this in the middle of the night and immediately went to stalk who else has a book. I love being back with these characters even if I'm a little vague on who everyone is after all this time. I just gotta hope Linda keeps on with these guys now that I've found them.

Okaaaaay, empezamos.

I loved the first half of this book, and the premise of the kidnapping is what made me read it. The mental health aspect was as added bonus I enjoyed seeing how the traumatic event effected both Chloe and Luke. I was looking for a book similar to Still Beating (which I loved) and this book definitely reminded me of that. In the first half I even enjoyed Chloe's friends and family, and the support they gave. There was something really likeable about Luke and Chloe together. Then the second half wasn't as good. I hate spin-offs and interconnected books, and not only is this one book within a series, it is a spin-off of another series. Chloe and Luke are the children of characters in a previous series (many authors are doing that the last few years). So we had many many many characters to keep track off, including their connection to everyone else and their backstory. Honestly, it could have been worse and more confusing, but it didn't endear me to the book.

Then I realised I hated this writing style. It was so corny and cheesy and sappy, and way over the top at times. That "sad" ending was the final straw. I also didn't like how Luke was "encouraged" by Chloe dad to get with Chloe for her benefit, and then Luke tried to force himself to fall in love with her. That really rubbed me up the wrong way, and was just another tick in the negative column. Thankfully, he fell for Chloe very quickly and she knew about her dad's plan straight away, so there wasn't a cliche reveal after they get together like I was expecting. So overall I liked the first half and disliked the second half.
