System Misinterpret #2

Endarkened Spire

Rate this book
*These books are written in first person present.*
Moving to the Wilds! Jeff's new home is on the brink of destruction. A Spire sunken into the ground, that humanity knows naught of.

Jeff's original dream of escape, living between cities and the Wilds as a Hunter, has come true. Of course, in that fantasy, he had Alrick by his side and these Hunters are definitely not him. They might actually be closer to his childhood tormentors, Leah, and her Mercenaries.

In pursuit of a way to continue to grow the Training Room and himself, conflict festers between his goblin friends Mur and Tet and his fellow humans. Still, is Hunting with his monsters out of the question? Surely his understanding of Dungeons and their strategies means he can at least try…

Little does he know that it’s his lack of knowledge that will endanger everyone and lead him to the Spire.

really gets the story going.

It started kinda slow but things really start to heat up as the story progresses. The story moves in an interesting direction with more knowledge on the world and the cultivation system. I like the MC, he can be a little winning and very unsure of himself, but that get less as he grows. It’s good to see the MC grow and not just poof be op. Thank you Ryan for a fun take on cultivation/ apocalypse story. Readers enjoy because I can tell more is yet to come.

great series

I really am enjoying this cultivation series. I tend to struggle a little with the amount of navel gazing that occurs in this genre however this series is kicking along quite nicely.

This book is heavily focused on path progression and I found I missed some of the variety of settings from the first novel. Still highly recommended if you like cultivation novels.

this series really has everything I enjoy!

So this is book two and it progresses very well, I can’t wait for book three. The fact that the series has cultivation, LitRPG, post apocalypse, and tower climbing all in one and it feels natural and smooth is amazing to me! I have become a huge fan!!

Still a great progressive fantasy!

I really enjoy how this book fleshed out the magic system and is setting up the major threats. I cannot wait for the next book.

Equalize is my favorite book by Ryan as introduced Rockland Barclay. With that being said, Endarkened Spire may be a better story and is an amazing book.

Hmm.

I really did not enjoy this book as I did the first *Rubs ear*.

I think the author tried too hard to give his protagonist "humanity". The book dealt too much with personal problems, and the minute details on how to get stronger. I'm not reading such a long book to see the character struggle and barely get anywhere. Then the author added such a huge cast, that the protagonist had to look after, meaning he won't get anywhere, and won't help anyone. With what they spent on extra weapons alone he would have been able to get some powerful book.

I was kind of hype when I saw this book out, and put it at the top of my next queue, but I'm regretting this. I don't know if I will read the sequel or not. With how slow this book went, it looks like the author will drag it on for a long time.

book two

I feel like I waited a long time for this book to come out

My problems with this book basically revolve around how often the main character is either embarrassed, or in tears, it feels like it’s almost every other page. It’s well written for a training book. The large jump at the end of the book where they already have four buildings and they finished all the training it feels like a copout so in book 3 do we get the rest of the training or do we just pick up where they’ve apparently finished it?

Those problems or why I gave the book 3 stars instead of four I did enjoy the book. I do enjoy the story but I don’t enjoy how overly emotional the main character is.
I’ll give this book 5 out of 10 I will be reading book 3.

Warning this review may contain spoilers:
While I did enjoy this book I do need to state that the first half of the book is very slow while the second half somehow seems rushed. I also struggle to relate to the main character who occasionally introspects about how bad his childhood was because his mother wouldn't let him cultivate she must have hated him despite the fact that she raised him for like 18 years in a wilderness filled with monsters instead of feeding him to one. It's also a bit frustrating when for example the main character is fighting an ice slime and the book goes through several pages of him trying every possible element combination to find it's weakness before getting to Fire then still struggling for several chapters after that trying to find other creatures elemental weaknesses despite having a visual chart of it inside himself, that feels like a bit much for willing suspension of disbelief. Despite those complaints I did enjoy the book and the world the author has created and look forwards to the conflicts the author is setting up in the future.

Oh Boy..

Existing character growth, new characters introduced, and world building. These are the three main things I take away from this book.

The author has shown us so much more of the underlying aspects of this world and, let me tell you, it is well-planned and thought out. We are starting to see the politics of the world develop as the mechanics of it all are starting to be revealed.

That background gives us a stage upon which personalities grow and relationships expand. That is the true mastery of this work as we see some things build while others change. Our MC is growing in power and friendship as well as other ways. Yet he still holds onto some of his innocence which is heartwarming.

This is a world that is still being revealed to us and one decidedly worth reading about.

The runt makes good.

Jeff, always given the worst assignments and held back “for his own good”, has started learning more about himself and the way magic (Qi) works. He’s learning more than most people around him know, and that gives him a chance to show his worth.

He still has far too much inner negative dialog, but maybe now it will get better in future installments. And I still don’t understand how they are succeeding on 15 stages of the Endarkened Spire, but haven’t completed floors?

Endarkened Spire

Jeff, Veronica, and the hunters have all traveled out to the middle of the wilds in the Training Room. They are unaware of just how special a location the Training Room is, or the fact that there are two hobgoblins living peacefully in the next room behind a fake door. Jeff just wants to help Veronica get better and grow stronger with his friends. The problem is that the hunters would kill the hobgoblins on sight. It’s hard to grow stronger while trapped in the basement.

This is quickly turning into one of my favorite cultivation series! The dungeon dives are entertaining and the characters are very well done. Some really fun new characters are added as well. Caz is just fantastic. I’m already eagerly awaiting book 3!

Well Done Ryan

Ryan DeBruyn has given us a cultivation journey of struggle and discovery that kept me interested the whole way. Looking forward to the next book. The character of each of the cast makes me care for some and even hate the villains. The world is rich and this book added so much by building from the first. Or should I say delving.

I highly recommend for fans of cultivation and progression and LitRPG.

Fascinating developments

What is the Church doing, and why do they want to cripple humanity? Can we please see them go up against any of the other races in the tower, in their hubris, and see a complete annihilation akin to what happened to Leanne and her compatriots? And if they have had access to the Endarkened Spire for so long, why do they remain so determinedly ignorant of the truth?

I have been waiting for this! It's so great to listen to the continuation of the Basement Tribe's adventure. The story's very well-written, clever, fun, and appropriately paced. It's very interesting to see how the characters developed and discover more about the world and system. That recap was a brilliant addition and very helpful.

Andrea Parsneau and Steve Campbell were phenomenal with the narration. They're just the best!

pretty good

Interesting story. Very little plot progression in the second half of the book. A bit to much focus on the mechanics of cultivation and too little on the results. Also too many random occurrences. At some points it feels like the author is just making things up rather than crafting an integrated story.

A fun progressive read

I did enjoy this book even if it felt like it dragged in places. To be honest the first one was a bit more exciting. The cultivation system has a way of being similar to many eastern concepts but given a very western edge. I think that part was done nicely. As an aspiring author myself I wouldn't mind reading the notes on that concept.

a bit convoluted

I still enjoy the story. It bounces around a little bit as a deeper plot is developed in the narrative.

I want to see where this is going. So I’m going to buy the next book when it comes out. For the basement tribe!

Can't Wait for the Next

This book picked up seamlessly from Starred Tower and continued Jeffs journey of cultivation. I really enjoyed it and can't wait for the next book in the series to come out.

fantastic!

The second book in the series delivers! Between building out the team and emotional growth we get to cringe-read, this book adds more depth to a story that has only been ominously foreshadowed.
I’m looking forward to book three even more than I was the second.

Good time

Another great story. Mote exploration of this worlds underlying laws. More fleshing out of characters. I do wish we got into, and more of, the time in the tower sooner. Excited to continue this journey with jeff and the basement tribe.

Good follow up

When authors develop books in a new direction the series can often loose its focus. This book introduces growth for the characters without loosing the story and is a great instalment in the series

so much story to tell

Loved the progression from the last book. So many sub plots introduced that are each fascinating and can’t wait for the inevitable collision. Just hope the next book won’t take so long to get here.

Great adventure

This book really fleshed out the world, and developed the caste! There was a lot of action, some reasonable plot twists, and a lot of adventure, I cant wait to see how we build out the sect in book 3!

Why I wait so long?

This is such a good book! I want a training room! I get a little lost with the descriptions of qi manipulation but I'm not sure that's the authors fault or mine for reading around me kids.
