This novel blew away my expectations!
I already fell in love with Chaffin's world from the first book: a world where modern day agencies tackle supernatural problems. It reminded me of Sanctuary and Warehouse 13, where it is urban fantasy, rather than medieval/renaissance type of fantasy. But this book? It took me straight into the lands of the fey, with Thunderbeasts and "don't say thank you or you're bound to that fey forever" kind of things. I absolutely wasn't expecting that, and it was a fun new development to the world of the first book.
I absolutely love the dialogue and dynamic between Marc, Azana, Lavanya, and Ji Eun. It made me laugh multiple times, and eagerly highlight my favorite lines. Marc especially stood out to me, and I can only say that Chaffin better write the next novel fast so I can find out what happens to one of my favorite characters. Azana was also special because her desire to unravel the lies and secrets surrounding her was interesting to read about. I absolutely fell in love with the new cast, but I do miss Kai and hope she comes back in the next book.
Finally, the plot. Oh my goodness, the plot! Right when I thought the characters were safe, Chaffin took me on another ride where I was clinging to my chair and hoping my favorites made it out alive. The somewhat cliffhanger ending didn't help either, so fair warning to those who don't like it when novels don't wrap things up in a bow!
Oh, one last thing. I enjoyed the slight touch of Christianity that was brought into this book. Unlike the other, where I was worried about the darkness, this one made it clear that certain parts were from a Creator, rather than some random "spirit." I liked that, and I'm certain those who don't like religious overtones in their books will still enjoy it because it's such a minor piece.
Content Warnings:
Language: None
Violence: Typical PG-13 fighting where people attack one another, get beat up/bloodied, and then have to be healed. But it wasn't very graphic.
Sexual Content: None. Not even a kiss! (Personally, I want certain characters to kiss, but hopefully that will come later). Holding hands is the extent, and hugs.
I will say that certain characters have PTSD and it really shows in how they interact.
