England's film industry has had a long and inconsistent output. In the early years it was developing when Hollywood was an orange grove and Germany/France were still finding their way to film excellence, But there were no masterpieces coming from the UK since pioneering film makers were concentrating on the technology of film, rather than story lines. The British people were more interested in the theater and cinema was looked upon as rather suspect; thus the market was limited.
From these beginning days, the author traces the strengths and weaknesses of the British film through the years and the fight to be recognized as a producer of quality films. Unfortunately, it was dry as dust with much emphasis on the politics and in-fighting among the various studios and government overseers of censorship. I'm not sure what I was expecting but this wasn't it. I was disappointed.
