This is book twelve in the Dark Slayers MC series and it's keeping up the tradition of being a book that I can highly recommend. The author, Aria Ray, has an inspiring knack for delivering a well written, totally original storyline with strong characters that you can't help but fall in love with. She gives a behind the scenes look at the inner workings of the Dark Slayers MC and gives us a rugged, sexy hero who is very protective of the one he loves. He will bend the laws and go through anything to protect the person he loves. This book starts out by introducing us to Norman, a person we soon find out is twisted and sociopathic. He has just woken up and is in his kitchen making himself breakfast. As he's doing this, he reflects on the past things he's seen as a private contractor in the Middle East. The bombs, blood and gore would probably put someone off their breakfast, but not him because he'd seen it so often that he was now immune to it. He took an early retirement and now has all the time in the world to do as he likes. He finishes up making his breakfast and as he sits down to enjoy it, he hears someone crying. He pulls his laptop over and puts the news on, turning up the volume to drown out the sound. He eats his breakfast, cleans up and assembles a food tray consisting of two slices of dry toast, an apple, and a liter of water. He walks down a long hallway until he comes to a door with a biometric lock on it. He places his finger on the pad and unlocks the door. He enters and smiles at the extremely thin woman crouched on the floor. He asks if she's slept well to which she replies that he asks her that every day and it still the same answer ... it's impossible to sleep on this hard floor. She's in a makeshift cage and he squats down on the floor outside the cage placing the tray out of her reach. She is covered in bruises, but he doesn't feel guilty because they came about during their "love play" and were delivered for his enjoyment plus he also has bruises and bite marks, although those were from her trying to escape. She asks him if he could just let her go, she's done everything he's asked her to do and he promised he would. He tilted his head to the side and stared at her, but in his mind he was thinking about everything he planned to do to her before granting her her final release. We find out that he grabbed her from the side of the road as she walked down it because her car had broken down. He tells her that she needs to dance to earn her dinner. He watched her dance and reflected on the thousands of women who looked at his scars with disgust, including the forty-seven online dating matches that saw him but kept on walking past him. You see he had a large facial scar that marred half his face. So instead of allowing women to walk all over his dignity, he stole theirs. This wasn't the first abduction nor would it be his last. Next we meet Crystal Connor an up and coming actor living in "tinsel town," Los Angeles. She's entering her apartment, soaking wet and her roommate/best friend Maria asks her what happened to her. She tells her that she will explain everything after she gets a shower. She dries off, slips on a robe and goes to the living room. She sits on the couch and only begins talking once her hands are wrapped around the latté Maria fixed her. Her friend asks her if she and the male lead actor are now a thing. Crystal tells her that she and Stewart are not a thing. She explained that Stewart and the lead female actor, Patricia, were fooling around near the end of the shoot. Patricia happened to catch him cheating and broke up with him very publicly at the wrap party. So he grabbed Crystal as his back-up date at the party and they left the party together. Then she tells Maria that she didn't realize how drunk Stewart was until they were on the road. He was driving his Bentley and was raging non -stop about Patricia when he lost control, crashing them into a lake. That was all that happened. Maria tells her that she is being portrayed as a drug addict. She asked who did she hear that from. Maria turns her laptop to face Crystal and she sees a morning talk show talking about Stewart taking her to a drug rehab center after she had had a cocaine induced seizure. She got sick to her stomach when the talk show people said it was her seizure that caused the accident. Crystal turns to Maria and tells her that this means no one is going to hire an actor with a substance abuse problem. Then she tells Maria that she needs to think all of this over and come up with a plan because no one is going to believe her about what really happened. Maria tells her that maybe now isn't a good time to figure this out, that she needs a break from everything to clear her head so she should consider sorting out her grandfather's house. He died over three months ago and she still hadn't worked through her grief about it. Crystal agrees that she should probably head to Griffinsford before the reporters learn where she lives and start harassing her. So Maria helps her pack for her trip home. Then we meet Doug Wellington, aka Hash, a prospect for the Dark Slayers MC and his best friend, Fred. Fred used to be a fellow prospect for the Slayers but made some really big mistakes and was kicked out by one of the patched members. Though he does have a meeting later that day with Storm, the President of the Dark Slayers. He and Hash are shooting hoops as he waits for his appointment time. Hash was telling him what to say and do to win his way back into the good graces of the Slayers. While they're playing Fred asks Hash if he heard about Crystal Connor. He said he hadn't. You see Hash and Fred both went to the same high school as Crystal. They were a grade older than Crystal but that didn't stop Hash from having a very huge crush on her even though all she did was ignore them. Fred tells him that he heard from all the bloggers that she's hooked on cocaine and did a stint in rehab. Hash tells him that he really doesn't remember her and to stop talking about it because it was generating bad karma. We go back to Crystal who is driving back home to Griffinsford. She stops at a local gas station and convenience store where she grabs a few groceries. She steps out to fill up her red convertible with gas when she notices a large, creepy bald man with a scar running down the side of his face watching her leaning on his older model light blue pickup truck. She gets nervous, finishes filling her tank and jumps back in her car quickly pulling out of the gas station. She gets to her grandfather's house and starts looking around, she's surrounded by bittersweet memories of her grandfather. Suddenly, there's a loud banging on the door. She figures that one of the neighbors must have seen her car turning in the driveway because it was pretty distinctive and everyone knew it. She answers the door only to discover that it's the creepy guy from the gas station. She tells him that today is not a good day for visitors and he tells her that he's not a visitor. She tries to slam the door and he puts his boot in the doorway, preventing her from doing that. She takes off running towards the back door. He tackles her to the ground and when she's falling, she knocks over a glass shelf that holds all her grandfather's fishing trophies. She quickly grabs a large shard of glass from the broken shelf but he wrestles it away from her. He is pinning her to the floor and telling her how beautiful she is. He goes on to tell her that since beautiful women, such as herself, don't give normal men chances, he's going to make his own opportunity She's going to spend twenty four hours with him and if by the end of it, she doesn't like him then he's going to let her go. He stands and pulls her up with him.. She tries to convince him that this isn't the way to start a relationship and that she's too busy right now to deal with him for twenty four hours. She can meet him at a restaurant later on in the week and they can have dinner together. He tells her that she needs to come along with him or he'll throw her over his shoulder. She makes a run for the door but he snags her long hair and pulls her to his chest. As she's struggling to get away he's fumbling with something in his coat pocket and before she knows it he has a sweet smelling rag over her nose and mouth; she blacks out. He puts her over his shoulder and carries her out. We flip back to Hash who has got a week off from work and he intends to use that time to relax and go hunting. He's going up to a cabin that one of the Slayers wife owns and they all use it for vacationing. It's really secluded and nestled in a lot of woods. He rides to the cabin on his motorcycle and tosses his bag of clothes on the bed. He immediately heads towards his locker that each club member has out there that contains their hunting gear and rifles. All the Slayers do a lot of hunting and fishing out there. He pulls on his hunting pants, his reversible jacket (it flips between camo and orange), straps his hunting knife on, grabs his rifle and heads out to do some deer hunting. Before too long he finds some deer tracks and starts following them. He trails them until he encounters a very large buck grazing. He lines up his shot, but before he can pull the trigger he hears a loud, woman's scream. The noise frightens the deer away and Hash starts heading towards where the scream sounded like it originated from. He expects to see someone being mauled by a bear but instead he finds an almost naked woman come tearing out of a cluster of trees. He can't even say anything before she's grabbing his jacket and asking to help her. That there's a man hunting her and he's totally crazy. He stays looking at only her face, though he longs to look at her body. He tells her that he'll protect her but she needs to quiet down so he can hear her attacker approaching. He takes off his jacket and turns it to the camo side so she can blend with her surroundings when they get out of there. It will also keep her warm. She tells him that they need to run that he has a gun but he tells her that he needs to make sure that the guy doesn't gun them down when they run plus he has a gun as well. He tells her to grab his hunting knife just in case he goes down she has something to protect herself with. He starts looking in the direction she came from and he sees some birds shoot up into the air from behind a boulder. He lines up his gun and a large bald man appears from around the boulder. Just as he's about to squeeze the trigger for the kill shot Crystal screams that that's him. He ends up winging him and he takes off running in the opposite direction. They take off for the cabin and Hash realizes that Crystal doesn't have any shoes on in this rough terrain so he picks her up and carries her down the mountainside. They reach the cabin and he finds her some women's clothes because Storm and his wife stay there so often that she leaves some clothes there. They have a conversation where she introduces herself as Crystal and he tells her that he's Hash. She asks what kind of name is Hash and he explains that it's his club name; he's prospecting for the Dark Slayers. He tells her the origin of the Slayers and that they're not outlaws. He tells her that they're going to go to the hospital once she's dressed and they'll contact the police for her. He tells her that he's not sure if she remembers him or not but they went to the same high school, he's Doug Wellington. She says that she thinks she remembers him. That he had a friend who talked non stop and that he made that cute little robot one year for the science fair. She's on the brink of breaking down and Hash promises her that he and his club will move heaven and earth to find this guy and bring him to justice. They get to the hospital and Hash calls Storm to call their friend at the police department. He quickly explained the situation to Storm and he was coming as well. Crystal is constantly holding Hash's hand and won't let it go, he's becoming her protector which is fine by him for as long as she needs him. Detective Jeff Jefferson, their MC's friend, arrived and interviewed Crystal after first talking with Hash to get his version._The Detective tries to get Crystal to go back to the woods she escaped from to lead them to the lair she was kept at. Hash defends her and tell the Detective that there's no way he's letting her go back out there and be basically used like bait. Storm eventually agrees with him and they decide to put her up at their MC's clubhouse where she can be protected. He shows her to the room at the clubhouse that's been prepared for her and he tells her that he needs to get going so he can show the Detective the area he found her before the daylight fades but he's leaving her in good hands. He explains that one of his brothers' wife was going to take care of her and show her around. She tells him that she doesn't need a babysitter to which he tells her that once he became her protector, the Slayers temporarily adopted her. He gets a clear indication that she's really into him and he tries to discourage her because he knows that she's going back to LA to continue with her career. He goes downstairs and heads out with everyone to go search the mountainside.Later Crystal makes it downstairs and talks with Rosie, the Slayers' bartender and it's during a conversation with her that she meets Sherry, Hash's ex girlfriend. Sherry apparently has nothing nice to say about Hash and all she does is put him down, especially saying that he will never become a patched member of the Dark Slayers. It's now four days later and the men ate finally back from searching and they found absolutely no trace of Crystal's abductor or where his hideout is. There's some grumbling among the searchers' ranks as well as some of the town folk that it's all a publicity stunt perpetrated by Crystal to draw attention to herself and her soon to be released movie. Hash and Storm don't believe this is the case and agree to keep looking into it. Hash and Crystal are having a private conversation between themselves where she confesses that she's doing alright during the day but when night time comes she can't fall asleep because all she sees when she closes her eyes is her abductor getting his hands on her again. Hash offers to sleep with her and it's really the beginning of the end for his resolve not to get involved with her physically and emotionally. Here is where I'll leave you and you'll have to get the book to discover what happens next. Let's just say that things really heat up between Crystal and Hash. There is also a surprising twist that put a serious spin on the whole abduction story. So, again, you'll need to get the book to find out if they ever get to Evie and whether the abductor is ever caught. There's also the story of Crystal and Hash's romance, will it blossom into more? Is Hash gonna become a patched member of the Slayers? Whew! You definitely need to get the book to find out these things.Plus, I'll say it again, I definitely recommend getting this book as well as the rest of the books in this series, it's totally worth it for the fantastic, original storylines and lovable characters. There's also the hot and sexy bad boy bikers that exist in each and every story. Need I say more?!.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
