If you are a fan of Mr Cruise then you will really enjoy this book, it covers his films, how he came to be cast or what motivated him to do each film. It mentions his Scientology interest but his filmography takes priority which is refreshing.

This is not at all biography in any sense, it just gives out details when his films was released, how they fared at box office, whom he was dating.All the stuff has already has been said by Tom in Shows,or documented before, even the photographs are from movie sets, barring one or two, which also i suspect must have appeared earlier.

This book is nearly unreadable due to misspellings, misusages, poor punctuation, and entire passages that make no sense whatsoever. However, I powered through to the end, and my considered opinion is: Meh....

Ik heb het afgelopen jaar zonder het echt als doel te hebben best wel veel films met Tom Cruise gezien. De gehele Mission Impossible reeks is gepasseerd, ik heb Top Gun nog eens herzien naar aanleiding van Maverick en dan was er ook nog onder andere Oblivion. Het was pas toen ik Cruise in een (oudere) aflevering van The Graham Norton Show zag, dat ik opeens zin kreeg om eindelijk eens die biografie uit de kast te halen.

Een geautoriseerde biografie die door Iain Johnstone is neergepend. Op zich een intrigerende keuze, want Johnstone is onder andere meer dan een decennium filmcriticus geweest voor The Sunday Times en schreef mee aan A Fish Called Wanda. Het verbaast me dan ook dat hij zo slordig te werk gaat, want dat je als overduidelijke filmliefhebber zelfs niet de moeite doet om Sam Raimi zijn naam correct te schrijven? Barry Lyndon wordt Barry Lydon en zo zijn er best een aantal slordigheden die eigenlijk in dit soort boeken niet thuishoren. Sowieso is het al bij al een redelijk eenzijdig beeld dat je hier van Cruise krijgt. Scientology komt er nog braafjes vanaf, maar het is vaak ook gewoon teveel een herhaling van “en toen was Tom aan het daten met persoon X of persoon Y”. Johnstone vindt het hier en daar zelfs nodig om hele dialogen uit films neer te pennen en focust zich verder vooral op box-office cijfers. Dat weerhoudt hem echter niet om af en toe letterlijk hetzelfde te zeggen als hij een hoofdstuk geleden ook al heeft verkondigd. Pluspunten wel voor het feit dat dit vlotjes wegleest en er al bij al nog een aantal dingen tussen zaten die ik nog niet wist.

Zo is de film Legend al die tijd aan mij voorbij gegaan en hoewel ik die ondertussen heb gezien en er bovendien geen fan van ben, was ik anders waarschijnlijk pas (nog) veel later achter het bestaan van die film gekomen. Standaard biografie dus, die nergens echt tot de verbeelding spreekt. Dan zijn er leukere boeken in dit genre.
