Gods and Empires #1

Empire of Hanging Swords

Rate this book
An empire on the brink.

An unimaginable betrayal.

And one girl who has to hold it all together.

Empress Neferet is no stranger to the weight of a crown nor the responsibility that comes with it. Secretly, she hunts her beloved father's murderer, seeking justice for his brutal death as unprecedented natural disasters are spreading fast across her lands.

Once she discovers the assassin was none other than her closest ally, the Dominus of Theron, fury drives her to cross the borders of his kingdom to seek revenge with the blessing of the gods. However, once Neferet crosses paths with Dante, the Dominus's son, they uncover a conspiracy that shakes her deepest convictions and suggests that the disasters ravaging her empire weren’t so natural after all.

As more gods descend with cryptic and conflicting messages, Neferet's faith is thrown into turmoil and she finds herself with more questions than answers. War looms on the horizon, so she and Dante must piece together the conspirators' plans—and the gods' true intentions—to stop them before her empire collapses.

This is the debut epic fantasy romance by R.R. Egal and it's truly worth a mention.

I first read this book as a beta reader well over a year ago. Since then I connected with this author and followed her journey along to publication. Reading this again was like reading it with fresh eyes and I noticed things I'd forgotten about and remembered things about it I enjoyed during my initial read.

This story follows Neferet, the Empress of the Etalan Empire and Dante, son of the Dominus of Theron. Even though their countries are allies the two have never gotten along and when Nef has reason to believe the Dominus has betrayed her, that hate only grows. But soon the two discover a conspiracy to kill rulers across the empire and must work together when the Dominus is the next target.

Taking inspiration from various religions she's created her own original pantheon that feels fully realized. The gods and goddesses in this book have their own followers and customers built around them. Readers see how some of the characters worship like a real religion rather than it just being cool aesthetic.

This story is action packed and the fight scenes really improved from the early version I read. They're greatly detailed and there were some scenes that had me cringey because of the visuals even though it wasn't overly gory.

The chemistry between Dante and Neferet seals the deal for me. They have a great dynamic as they go from attempting to murder each other to forming an alliance for the good of their countries to realizing they love each other. It felt real! And it was well paced where I didn't feel like they got together too soon or that it was being dragged out.

This is a strong debut worth checking out if you're looking for more Black led adult fantasy.

I’ll be the first to admit—world building is usually not my thing. But Empire of Hanging Swords hooked me anyway, and now I’m curious to see where this series goes. R.R. Egal blends political intrigue, a clash of empires, and gods who don’t always agree on what mortals should do, and it makes for a story that’s both unpredictable and immersive. The battle scenes are sharp and detailed, the romance simmers with that delicious enemies-to-lovers tension, and the pantheon feels fresh and original. If you like your fantasy with equal parts scheming, action, and divine chaos, this is one worth diving into.

This was an amazing book! If you like books with loads of amazing battles, both physical and mental, this is a good read. I also particularly loved learning about the world. This author has created unique religions, diverse governments, and even territories we have yet to see. I feel this is only the tip of the iceberg, I'm excited to read the next books in this series.

Genre: Dark Fantasy

Tropes: Cursed, Enemies to Lovers,
Royal Intrigue, Gods interfere, Only one bed

Things I liked: The fight scenes were amazingly detailed! It was definitely an action-packed book.

The author has made her own pantheon of Gods, I loved learning all the new myths and meeting the Gods as the story progressed.

Things I disliked: Murder was the solution to basically every problem they encountered.

Audiobook or Physical? Right now, there is only a paperback and Kindle version. This book would make an amazing audiobook, so I hope one is made in the future.

This was a great start to the series. The concept of the story was good and I enjoyed it. The cover is pretty standard for fantasy expectations. The colours are good and are eye-catching. The book is well written and flows nicely. The world-building is excellent which is always a huge plus in a fantasy novel. The characters are good and fit in well. I liked Empress Neferet. I felt sorry for her at times. I actually really Dante too! I recommend this one!

This was marketed to me as a fantasy. But it's actually romantasy slop. If you enjoy reading your enemies to lovers slop out of your trough, you might enjoy this.
But I simply can not suspend my disbelief regarding the insane audacity of how these characters interact and how insufferable they are. Also, Neferet is a terrible person, god damn.
This book is just beyond unbelievable, and I can't recommend it to anyone looking for a genuine fantasy book.

If you want romantasy that's a bit less trope-heavy and less garbage than the typical romantasy book, then this might be for you.
But if you were hoping for a well constructed and believable fantasy world with good worldbuilding, interesting characterization, and great themes, this book is not for you.

This book was epic!!! The author did such a great job of transitioning the heros from enemies to lovers. The details and the politics were also intriguing. Just the right amount of complexity to not be overwhelmed by, but keep the reader on their toes.

I can’t wait for the next one!!!!

Empire of Hanging Swords

by R.R. Egal

My Review (aka: me clutching my Kindle like it owes me emotional support):

Nef and Dante. 🫠
Captivating doesn’t even begin to cover it. These two did not miss a single beat. And the QUOTES?? I wanted to highlight every other line like a feral academic.

This book did not come to play.
The action hits in chapter one like:
“Hi, I’m your new obsession.”
And honestly? It was right. I was hooked before I even had time to adjust my blanket. 👀

And let me just say — the world-building? Chef’s kiss.
It’s rich and textured without being overwhelming. I didn’t have to pull up a map or create a family tree just to keep up. This is the kind of fantasy even a tired, overstimulated, tea-drinking goblin girl (hi, hello, me) can easily digest. ✨☕️🫖👿

The characters?
LIKABLE.
WELL-BUILT.
Emotionally unhinged in all the right, delicious ways.
They genuinely feel like real people… real people who should maybe not be trusted with weapons or diplomacy, but real nonetheless.

The pantheon?? 🏛️
Say. Less.
Unique, dramatic, flavorful — everything I want from divine meddling and then some.

Plot-wise? Top tier.
Political intrigue. Godly drama. Conspiracies. Betrayals.
It’s giving: “Don’t talk to me, I’m reading.”
The pacing never lags, the tension stays tense, and the whole story feels alive.

By the end I was already mentally prepping for book two like I was about to clock in for emotional overtime. This world has SO much left to give, and I’m absolutely along for the ride.

If you love fantasy that’s exciting yet easy to follow, packed with action, great characters, and gods who are impressively unique.
Add this to your TBR immediately. More people need to read this book!

It’s fun, fast, gripping, and yes — you will want more.
(Prepare yourself… the cliffhanger DISRESPECTED me.)

I kept it vague so you can enjoy every twist without spoilers. 😉
Thank me later.

And if I can’t have a movie adaptation…
Psssst — an audiobook is VERY MUCH NEEDED. Please and thank you. 🎧
Oh, and there are trigger warnings. Read them if you want. I don’t because it spoils the experience I.M.O.

Let’s touch the gods-damned stars. ✨

Empire of Hanging Swords
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ — Somebody hold me, I have emotions.

You ever open a book on your Kindle thinking, “Just one chapter before bed,” and then three hours later you’re emotionally compromised, crying into your pillow, whispering, “How could they??” Yeah. That was me with Empire of Hanging Swords.

From page one, the writing slices clean and deep. it’s elegant, poetic, and sharp enough to make your literary-loving soul sing. The worldbuilding? Chef’s kiss. It doesn’t just transport you; it kidnaps you, drops you in the middle of a empire built on secrets and steel, and then makes you fall in love with people you’re not even sure you should trust.

The storytelling is layered like a deadly cake—each chapter peeling back another betrayal, another ache, another “Oh no, they DIDN’T.” Angst? It’s in there. Pining? Oh, painfully delicious. Betrayal? Served fresh with a side of heartbreak. And the characters? They’re so richly developed, so human, you’ll want to grab coffee with half of them and throw the other half off a cliff… then reverse those roles two chapters later. I wanted to adopt them. And maybe stab them. With love.

The enemies-to-lovers arc? It’s a full on slow burn inferno that makes you question your morals, your allegiances, and frankly, your sanity. Every longing glance and half-spoken confession had me screeching like a kettle.

And THE ENDING?! I wasn’t ready. I’m still not ready. My soul left my body. I need therapy and the next book (preferably in that order). I am now legally required to light a candle every night until the sequel drops. Send help.

If you like your fantasy with a twist of mystery, a touch of conspiracy, heartbreak with a side of slow burn, and a plot so gripping you forget your coffee’s gone cold, Empire of Hanging Swords is your next obsession. I would not be surprised if this becomes the next mega-adapted, silver-screen sensation. You heard it here first, folks.

In conclusion: 10/10, would sell my soul to the gods of publishing for book two.

Empire of Hanging Swords follows follows Neferet, the Empress of the Etalan Empire and Dante, son of the Dominus of Theron. There’s tension from the outset, their countries are allies but Neferet has reason to believe someone has betrayed her and the Etalan Empire, her father was murdered, was it really their allies behind this?

We now meet Dante, the Dominus’s son.. tension is thick but soon a deeper conspiracy is discovered, it wasn’t just one murder.. there’s more planned and the Dominus is next!

It’s time for the two to put the their differences behind them and work together to save the Dominus..

As the story progresses you can see the tension between the two start to change.. it’s gradual and paced well but when they finally realise their feelings for each other it wasn’t a shock.. if anything you are rooting for them, and relieved for them. I’m not a big fan of romance in stories.. I’m always worried it will take focus away from the main plot of the story but I need not have worried as plenty of time is given so things develop at a steady pace without overshadowing the plot.

Speaking of development I really loved how the author balanced the world the characters live in exploring the makeup and the various religions.. again giving just the right amount of time to show it’s importance.

There’s plenty of action too for those who like a battle or two. I can’t help but love how the author managed to mirror the physical battles with the mental battles the main characters face. Who can they trust, can they trust each other.. can they even trust their own feelings and motivations..

Very fulfilling read.

🫑 (One closed door scene)

Page Count (Kindle): 475

Trigger warning for grief, sëxual content, törture, dëath, and mental illness.

I received this ARC ahead of the Empress of Ashen Skies release!

Nef is a vengeful, proud, and arrogant Empress with incredibly questionable morals. At one point I honestly thought, she’s an absolute monster.. 😣 Her father was manipulative and abüsive, but she misreads his cruelty as him “strengthening” her. It hardened her into who she is now.

Dante isn’t innocent either! His morals are just as grey. He’s haunted by the god of death and literally has to mürder people to feed their souls to the god. He loathes Nef, sees her as arrogant, proud, and cruel… and she feels the same about him. They completely despise each other. At one point she even kîlls him, and one of the gods brings him back. 😵‍💫

Nef’s main goal is to find her father’s müderer and she believes it’s Dante’s father. Then his father ends up poîsoned and he thinks Nef did it. Soon, they realize someone’s conspiring against the rulers, and they reluctantly team up to uncover who’s behind it all.

There were some great tension-filled moments, but honestly, the plot outweighed the romance for me. I did get confused at times. There are a lot of gods, and the book switches between first and last names so I wasn’t always sure who was who. The world-building also left me lost occasionally. 🙃

It was slow in some parts, and I definitely had to push through a few chapters, but there were also some solid plot twists sprinkled in. The book ends on a cliffhanger, so I’ll definitely be reading book two!

Thank you so much to the author for sending me this eARC! 🫶

If you’re looking for your next dark fantasy book following two characters in an enemies (each thinking the other killed their father) to reluctant allies to lovers, check this book out!

The plot follows to morally grey characters, each trying to do what’s best for the kingdoms they lead, while also keeping control and maybe some dirty work behind the scenes. They both would burn the world for the people they love and as leaders this could actually lead to the world burning. There is plenty of meddling gods as well that help but also make everything even more confusing for the pair. When a plot to undermine the empress FMCs rule and try to overthrow her empire and take down the MMCs family as well is discovered, they must work together to try to foil the plot in time.

This book was filled with plenty of court politics, physical and mental battles, and of course plenty of banter and tension between the two main characters. I love a dual POV and getting to see inside the corrupt minds of these two characters as they try to plan and plot and work together and against each other. This was an exciting read and the ending had me shattered in the best way and I cannot wait for the next book to see what happens! Overall my rating 4.3/5!

Thanks to the author and the Nerdfam for the gifted copy, all opinions given are my own!

Empire of Hanging Swords is a fast-paced, gripping start to the Gods and Empires series. R.R. Egal has created a rich fantasy world full of danger, political tension, and powerful gods, and I couldn’t stop reading.

Writing Style:
Egal’s writing is clear, vivid, and full of energy. The action scenes are intense, and the quiet moments hit just as hard. The dialogue feels real and keeps the story moving. It’s easy to follow but still packed with depth.

Character Growth:
The main character is a strong, smart girl caught in the middle of betrayal, war, and divine chaos. I loved watching her grow and struggle through impossible choices. The tension between her and the other main character added a lot to the story—it’s complicated in the best way.

Worldbuilding:
The world feels huge and alive, with empires at war, ancient gods causing trouble, and history that affects everything. It’s the kind of world that sticks with you. The details are great, but never too much—you learn as you go.

This book has everything I love in fantasy: strong characters, deep politics, fierce battles, and a world that feels real. I’m already excited for the next one!

Wow. It’s taken me a hot minute to process that ending!

This story is epic. The author has done a beautiful job in painting her world, developing the characters and instilling a real depth of emotion. She does not shy away from harsh themes and undertones that are reminiscent of GoT. It has an overarching story line of medaling gods and royal advisors, with mythological themes, and an FMC and MMC that are so morally grey, they border on just plain darkness.

Now, like any first novel in a fantasy series, there is world building and character development, however the way the story is told, makes you feel like you can see it unfolding around you. It took me straight to the streets of ancient Roman cities, villages and peoples. There’s no big trickery, and no big brain cells needed, it’s just laid out so nicely for you, that you’re not left getting frustrated by wtf is going on, or trying to keep mental tabs open.

Do check your TW though before picking this one up!

Thank you R.R. Egal for my digital copy of Empire of Hanging Swords. I thoroughly enjoyed the story, and NEED to know what happens in book 2 pronto, because, that ending had me wrecked 😆

i do love a book with the gods just creating the most chaos they can and not being helpful about it. empire of hanging swords had amazing worldbuilding, great tension between neferet and dante, and interesting political intrigue.

following neferet, the empress of etalan, and dante, son of the dominus of theron, you see them evolve from enemies to reluctant allies to lovers. the progression felt natural especially because they both admitted quite early on that unfortunately the other person was hot. i can forgive dante for being blonde because he is a certified piner. he is there for nef when no one else is, and vice versa. they double-cross each other quite often which adds an interesting dynamic as their feelings grow. their banter is just the cherry on top honestly. i love them.

the fight scenes were also well-written. the pantheon was one of my favorite parts, it felt unique and a fun combination across different cultures. overall, it felt immersive and i am excited for the next installment.

Empire of Hanging Swords is an intense, immersive start to what looks to be a sprawling epic fantasy series. R.R. Egal builds a world teeming with clashing empires, vengeful gods, and characters who rarely fall into easy categories of good or evil. The moral complexity is a strong point, and the story pulls no punches when it comes to the cost of power and ambition.

The worldbuilding is rich—sometimes almost too rich—and the first few chapters can feel dense as you're thrown into the deep end. But if you stick with it, you're rewarded with a gripping tale full of sharp twists, brutal conflicts, and some genuinely surprising character turns.

Think grimdark with heart. Fans of Joe Abercrombie, R. Scott Bakker, or early Brandon Sanderson will likely enjoy this one. It’s not perfect—pacing issues crop up here and there—but it lays down a solid, compelling foundation for the rest of the Gods and Empires series.

Empire of Hanging Swords is out Feb. 5, 2025.

With a fabulous blend of mythology and fantasy, I loved this book.
With the permission of her gods, when the Empress Neferet travels across her kingdom to avenge her father’s death, but when she comes up against Dante, the son of his assassin, they discover a shocking conspiracy, once which threatens her entire kingdom, a kingdom ravaged by disasters. Forced to work together against the plotting of men and gods, she must stop them all before they destroy everything she lives for. This was quite a complex read as Neferet and Dante are both very strong characters, bolstered extremely well by additional players in this story. Although at times, I did find Neferet annoying with the way she seems to just use people, and with some of the shocking things she does, I also found myself feeling sorry for her in a way as I had the impression that she was quite young when she gained the crown. I was also fascinated at how the gods seemed to toy with her and Dante for their own enjoyment.
Empire of Hanging Swords is a great read in what I hope will be the first in an enthralling series.

A beastly, all-consuming thing. Empire of hanging swords was an action packed enemies to lover Romantasy with a great FMC.

I loved the badass FMC and her side characters. The power struggle between the FMC and MMC we gripping and there are some great quotes that will stick with me from this book. It’s in line with the female rage female power of today’s climate and I felt empowered reading it.

I love that the FMC was also morally grey because, who doesn’t love that?! The characters overall were the main highlight for me and I’m excited to see what they do in book 2.

Tons of great tropes including E2L, cursed, one bed, grumpy MMC, morally grey all around, dual POV, power struggle, blood oaths and bonded.

The only con for me is that it was heavy in the world building and battle scenes, which were well done but I’m a heavy on the romance kinda gal. If you liked crescent city or books along those lines you’ll love this. I’m not sure if I’ll read it again but I’ll definitely read the sequel.

If you want action this book gives you so much, and the fight scenes are described so well that you can actually see it inside you head as if you were there. There is an interesting plot which includes religion and government issues. There are so many betrayals and so much heartbreak for me that I just had tears running down my face at times.

I will admit that I felt as though I had whiplash at times because I was so HATING certain characters but then a few pages later I am rooting for them, it was a hard dilemma for me but in the best way. The characters were done so great that it was traumatizing at times.

This book is the definition of slow burn, and good the tensions and angst had you on the edge of you chair waiting for something to happen. There were so many moments of pining and I was so sure that it would finally happen only for something else entirely to happen.

Don't sleep on this one, it is so worth not sleeping for and then staring at the wall unsure where your life is once you get to that ending. When is book two coming, asking for a friend.

Empire of Hanging Swords by R.R. Egal is a well-crafted fantasy novel that skillfully employs multiple POVs to build a complex and richly layered narrative. Egal’s writing is clear, immersive, and engaging, drawing readers deeply into a world filled with political intrigue, conflict, and compelling characters. The multiple perspectives add depth and nuance, allowing for a broader understanding of the stakes and motivations that drive the story. The pacing is well balanced, with enough action and character development to keep the momentum steady throughout. While some plot threads could have been further explored, the book delivers an exciting and immersive reading experience. Fans of intricate fantasy with strong worldbuilding and multi-dimensional characters will find much to enjoy here. A solid four-star read that promises even more in future installments.I received an ARC in exchange for this honest review.

Politics, gods and a lot of tension between both protagonists is what we get in this book.
Nef is an amazing fmc, especially since she’s not the usual „poor, inexperienced girl“ that’s common in books but she’s already an empress and morally let’s say „flexible“ 🤣 I loved her character for that reason.
But what made it hard for me was the amount of politics especially during the first half of the book while being extremely slow paced. I really had to fight myself to continue reading.
After around 50% it’s getting much better and at that point I was also able to bond to the characters more. Also the tension between Nef and Dante got much more intense and understandable.
And the ending? Wow. If you want your heart ripped out, absolutely go for that book.

The first half was quite enjoyable, I liked the conspiracy plot and the world building. It has lots of interesting stuff going on, like gods actually manifesting and interacting with characters instead of just giving vague signs. Lots of recent fantasy likes to incorporate morally complex characters but this book takes it one step further and does not shy away from them acting downright terribly. Both MCs are in positions of power and are very inconsiderate to people of lower standing but not in the way that they like to torment people for fun (unless it's their enemies). However I feel like this book went on for longer than it should and that the story got weaker towards the end. The set up for the next book sounds like it could be very good though.

I read the ARC through NetGalley

The Empire of Hanging Swords is a fantasy enemies-to-lovers romance that actually does the enemies-to-lovers trope justice. Alongside this are some amazing action and battles and a story that hooks you from the start. If you love a fantastic story, amazing characters and brilliant writing this is for you.

I loved how Dante and Neferet’s relationship evolved throughout the novel. It was realistic and well paced. Full of intrigue, action and unforgettable characters this is a must read for fantasy romance fans. I won’t spoil the plot much but I will say I am fully invested and this is definitely a ‘just one more chapter’ book where you quickly lose hours of time without realising it! I can’t wait to read more by Egal.

Empire of Hanging Swords was an excellent debut novel. The characters were great and you learn to love them. Love that they are very morally grey and their decision making isn’t always the best. (I don’t read a lot of books like that so it was very refreshing for me!) This was a true enemies to lovers and I did feel like the growth between the two main characters built up well.

The world building was very fun and easy to understand. I really liked how the gods were brought into the plot and how they were used. The battles were really well written so the reader could really visualize what was happening.

The ending made me want to through the book across the room…

This is the debut book by R.R.Egal and what an amazing debut it is.
This book is an epic romantic fantasy with World building political intrigue amazing battles and more. I would definitely say it’s on the darker side of the fantasy genre.
The action starts away right from chapter 1 and drew in from the very beginning. And one of these people that is the first quarter of the book is slow or doesn’t captivate me. I can’t continue to read it. Where as this book hooked me in right from the beginning.
This book is one of those books that definitely needs more attention placed on it and I absolutely cannot wait for book 2.

The vibe is intense but somehow still personal; you really feel what the characters are going through.

Neferet has this kind of quiet strength that’s easy to root for, and Dante? He sneaks in and makes you care about the bigger picture without stealing the spotlight. The world-building is chef’s kiss there’s so much detail and texture that it feels alive, like you could step right into it.

Honestly, I breezed through it way faster than I expected. There’s tension, intrigue, and a little bit of heartbreak sprinkled in, and it all just works. Definitely a strong start to what I think will be a really fun series.

Empire of Hanging Swords is a fantasy about in empire on the edge of disaster. Neferet is trying to figure out how she wronged the gods in order to be facing the challenges that have been brought upon her. This is a story of love, family, politics and great betrayal. The characters and plot were both creative and enjoyable. The story was well written and leaves off with readers eager for book 2 in the Gods and Empires series. I think this is going to be a strong series to last the ages. The religious politics are so detailed and researched well. I love the lore. The main relationship is strong, passionate, and determined to thrive. The physical and mental turmoil is so well developed you feel every ounce as if you are astral projected above these characters, watching them live this story. Very well done i can’t wait for the next book to come my way.

this was such an interesting debut fantasy! we love a strong morally grey fmc, I really loved seeing her struggle to balance politics and strength with compassion. I really enjoyed the world building in this, egal made this incredible world system with intricate religions and diverse politics. I did struggle with the plot sometimes because I did find that the story felt a little jumpy and some parts did feel a little abrupt. overall this was such an interesting read and I can’t wait to see what book 2 has in store!
