Oscar Wilde is arguably the most quoted man in history. He arrived in New York with nothing to declare but his genius in 1882. On his return to England he had London at his feet. In 1895 he was charged and convicted of homosexual activities. He was born in Dublin in October 1854 and died a broken man in exile in Paris on 30th November 1900. He always said his memory would live on.
The importance of being well quoted. The quotes cover Wilde's life from when he was a man sitting on his throne to when he went into the gutter.
Full of dazzling with from his plays, stories, poems, essays and letters. For business and everyday life, "nothing succeeds like excess". Quote your genius. - the Foreword
NB: Incorrectly there is no apostrophe in the word 'Worlds' [sic] in the title so the book is catalogued accordingly.
Surely there can only be so many books of Oscar Wilde quotes? Yes, true, but this one is just a little bit different. Not only is there a lengthy introduction entitled 'The Lord of Language' but the design of the book is quite different. Each quotation resides on a single page in probably 18 point type with a vignette of Oscar standing proudly showing himself off (no surprise there) and many have an additional illustration that fall under the book's 'Photographs and Landmarks' heading. So, even though the reader will probably know many of the quotes their presentation makes this book rather special.
Wilde's dazzling wit is displayed from his plays, his stories, his poems, his essays, his letters and his everyday speech and, even though they may be familiar many still bring a smile to the face.
Who can not be amused by 'The only way to get rid of temptation is to yield to it' (is that so? - I must try it!)? And would it be true to think, 'Anyone can sympathise with the sufferings of a friend, but it requires a very fine nature to sympathise with a friend's success'? As for, 'I like to talk to myself. It is one of my greatest pleasures. I often have long conversations all by myself and I am so clever that sometimes I don't understand a single word of what I am saying', I wonder if many of us have suffered accordingly? Perhaps not!
He is certainly striking a cord when he says, 'One can survive everything nowadays, except death' but, let's not think of that, let's think of 'Nothing succeeds like excess' - now that could be fun!
'Tis a nice little volume but I would have rated it higher had the author not included a quote by Tennyson which I don't think even Oscar would dare claim as his own!
