**THIS STORY WAS WRITTEN WITH MY HUSBAND AND IS VERY DIFFERENT FROM MY USUAL WORKS. ENJOY!**

People grieve in many ways, but spending time with your ethereal wife isn't one of them.

When Everett's wife, Renee, leaves their life behind, he's stuck trying to pick up the pieces of his broken marriage. He knows he has to get himself back out there, but it feels impossible for someone like him—an anxious, germaphobic mess. Determined to figure out how to navigate life with his dearly departed wife, Everett goes on a journey of self-discovery. But with Renee appearing at the most inconvenient and intimate times, Everett is certain he’ll be stuck in purgatory alongside his wife forever.

Will he figure out why Renee made her final decision? Can Everett find his happily ever after?

Till death do us part. . . . Or not.

AfterWife is a dark humor paranormal dramedy with romantic elements. This third-person POV story still has some spice and triggers, however, which includes suicide, some sexual content, and mental health issues.

About the author

Lauren Biel

Lauren’s stories are often emotionally raw, with lots of twists and turns. She describes her writing as “where light meets dark”, which represents how her witty humor compliments the darkness in every story. Instead of trying to mold her writing to fit in a box, she chooses to be unapologetically herself. While her focus is on Romance with dark elements, subgenre is no constraint for her. The common theme in every book is finding love when you least expect it. She enjoys putting her characters through tribulations, allowing their triumphs to be that much more poignant. Make sure you have your seatbelts secured. It’s always a bumpy ride.

When she’s not working, she’s writing. When she’s not writing, she’s spending time with her husband, her friends, or her pets. You might also find her on a horseback trail ride or sitting beside a waterfall in Upstate New York. She has a pretty normal life, yet her stories are anything but.

This book was so much more unique than your average romance! I'm a sucker for intensely flawed characters desperately clawing their way through life (or the afterlife, in Renee's case) and this book delivers.

Some of these scenes are very difficult but powerful and build up to an intensely satisfying conclusion for all of the characters involved. The journey is sometimes somber and sometimes funny, but always heartfelt and had me so invested I couldn't put it down.

10/10 recommend for those who are looking for something a little different than your regular romance. And mind your trigger warnings!

Okay this was my first book by this author and I enjoyed it! The story was a bit dark but the humor was great. It was a bit predictable but the author kept it interesting enough that I blazed through it in one sitting! Great fall time read

🌶🌶/5

Trigger/Tropes: Lite PNR Dramedy written in the 3rd person. Not v. spicy—there's some but it isn't smutty. Su¡c¡də, Secrets, Negative Self Talk, Some Mental Health Themes, etc.

After I finished this, I told Lauren it's like she Lauren Biel-ified the rom-com genre. She took rom-com and made it dark. But simultaneously kept it cute. There were several times I found myself smiling or laughing.

The book starts out with a secret and an un-al¡v¡ng. Everett finds his wife after returning home from a long day at work. She's done what she felt necessary to protect him. From there chaos and anarchy ensue. Okay, maybe not anarchy but A LOT of chaos.

This story was incredibly engaging. I felt for Everett. I even found myself yelling at Renee like she was a Bravo Housewife on TV. But Renee has her own damage and as much as she peeved me off from time to time, I felt for her too bc I saw parts of me in her.

𝓐 𝓬𝓸𝓷𝓬𝓸𝓬𝓽𝓲𝓸𝓷 𝓸𝓯 𝓪𝓷𝓽𝓲𝓭𝓮𝓹𝓻𝓮𝓼𝓼𝓪𝓷𝓽𝓼 𝓪𝓷𝓭 𝓪𝓷𝓽𝓲-𝓪𝓷𝔁𝓲𝓮𝓽𝔂 𝓶𝓮𝓭𝓼 𝓰𝓪𝓿𝓮 𝓱𝓮𝓻 𝓼𝓸𝓶𝓮 𝓼𝓮𝓶𝓫𝓵𝓪𝓷𝓬𝓮 𝓸𝓯 𝓷𝓸𝓻𝓶𝓪𝓵𝓬𝔂 𝓲𝓷 𝓱𝓮𝓻 𝓱𝓮𝓪𝓭, 𝓫𝓾𝓽 𝓼𝓱𝓮’𝓭 𝓪𝓵𝔀𝓪𝔂𝓼 𝓫𝓮𝓮𝓷 𝓸𝓷𝓮 𝓬𝓻𝓲𝓼𝓲𝓼 𝓪𝔀𝓪𝔂 𝓯𝓻𝓸𝓶 𝓱𝓾𝓻𝓵𝓲𝓷𝓰 𝓱𝓮𝓻𝓼𝓮𝓵𝓯 𝓸𝓿𝓮𝓻 𝓽𝓱𝓮 𝓮𝓭𝓰𝓮.

Their story made me cry, specifically the end & the epilogue. It was tragic and how Everett still loves Renee after everything just obliterated my heart. While there are light moments, the majority of this story is heavy. It deals with heavy themes. It's going to cinch down around your heart. Personally, I know it's a story that will stick with me bc of the relatability of it.

Also, I loved that Everett got his happily ever after. The journey to it is tumultuous and wrought with so much grief and doubt. So, when he gets his HEA and Renee gets her peace, it's like the angels come down and sing. I'm kidding but it was heart-warming.

This book is an odd mix of palate cleanser and "make me feel something" that I am totally here for. I think you'd be pleasantly surprised if you took a chance on it. It comes out on 9/30/22, let me know what you think if you read it. 🖤

This was absolutely wonderful.

Five stars for this masterpiece.

This was very different from Lauren's previous works, as advertised, but still incredibly interesting, refreshing and it pulled on my heart strings.
I loved getting to see Renee and Everett's interactions, but also that reveal?
HOLY CRAP. I did NOT see that coming. It was nuts.
I loved getting to see the development of all the characters over the course of the novel, and despite me normally hating third person POV novels, this was truly amazing.
The characters were well thought-out, the plot was interesting, it had a good balance of romance, comedy, drama and reality and it was all tied together by an amazing writing style that flowed well from start to finish.
YOU HAVE TO READ THIS.
It was beautiful, and while it still held some dark elements, a major part of Lauren's style, it was different to her previous novels, in a way that is near unexplainable.

You just have to read it. Make sure to check it out September 30th!

Holy macadamia nut I was not expecting to read that in the first chapter. Damn, that’s one way to start off a book😅. It’s kind of interesting like she’s stuck in the afterlife to a secret that she has kept from him and she doesn’t remember it in the afterlife, and he’s the only one that can see and hear her.

As Lauren Biel herself stated “it's NOTHING like my normal work” but still just as good. This is written in 3rd person POV and definitely not as dark. The theme behind it is a little dark and still check trigger warning; however compared to other books by Lauren it’s bright.

Having your wife’s ghost haunt you might not seem funny but the situations that Everett found himself in while interacting with her made me chuckle. This could just be my darker sense of humor coming into play. The situations are real world and each of us might find ourselves in if we loss a partner. You follow them through these situations and life after the passing of a loved one while trying to both move on.

There is the underlaying why is Rene (Everett’s ghost wife) still “here”? This question does get answered. Although sad for both people; they do ultimately get there own happy ever afters.

There’s grief, hope, mystery, romance, some spice, comedy, and a GHOST; why wouldn’t you want to read?

Thank you Lauren for opportunity to be an ARC reader.

What a beautiful story.

When Everett's wife Renee kills herself, he is left depressed and in a state of limbo. The raw emotion that he is feeling both immediately after the event and a few weeks down the line is captured perfectly by Lauren (and her husband, who co-wrote). The book documents Everett's battle to grieve for his wife and move forward with life all whilst trying to piece together her reasons alongside his stressful job as a lawyer and judgements from his family.

It's not all emotional though, the frequent appearances of Renee in spirit lighten the mood and are funny at times, especially as she tries to guide him through life from beyond the grave. There is of course a HEA that lets you feel relief and happiness for the characters.

Whilst this is so different from Lauren's usual dark style of writing, it is a fantastic way of showcasing a different style.

FEEL GOOD BOOK

FMC - Renee
MMC - Everett

This book is exactly what I needed. It was definitely not one of my usual reads but it was so good, I loved it.

I cried in the beginning just feeling Everette’s and Renee’s pain. This book had me feeling all of the emotions.

Chapter 24 was an absolute riot. I laughed so hard I had tears streaming down my face. The airport security, the plane bathroom scene, to the foot on the arm rest. The part with the sweaty arm pit reminded me of the movie Along Came Polly, when Ben Stiller was playing basketball with the hairy sweaty guy.

This is a 5 star for me. I think it was so well written. I loved Everett’s character development, even though it happened because his wife committed suicide.

Possible Triggers:
Suicide
mental health
cheating

This was definitely different to the other Lauren Biel books I have read. The writing style was a little different, but it made sense when I came on here and saw that it was written with her husband.

I really did enjoy it though. The more I got into it the more I was invested to why Renee had done it and to be fair if she had told us at the beginning it would have been a really short read. Although I have to say I genuinely didn’t see that outcome.

I felt sorry for Renee yeah she did what she did but all she really wanted was the companionship of her husband. But at the same did I felt bad of Everett he genuinely seemed to think he was doing the right thing working hard to provide for them.

I might be a bad person but I thought the nsync funeral thing was really funny or the lady at the bereavement group with the cats.

I wouldn’t say I loved it but i did really like it.

Definitely different from her usual charm

While this story is a complete 180 from her usual, there were definitely some of Lauren's dark humor quirks sprinkled throughout this unorthodox paranormal story (**see the funeral scene and the first group therapy session for reference). There will definitely be some face smacking moments and some bust a gut laughing moments. Other times, You will literally want to reach through the screen and strangle Everett for being stupid while wanting to pat him on the head and tell him everything is going to be alright other times. He reminds you that not every MMC has to be the alphahole with a fit body to make you fall in love with him as he recovers from the shocking discoveries behind his wife's various secrets. As always, mind your triggers and highly recommend!

I wasn’t sure what to expect going into this book. It’s nothing like I’d normally read. I was pleasantly surprised. Poor Everett is trying to mourn his wife. That situation is made all the more difficult because his wife is haunting him. Renee won’t/can’t move on until Everett is happy. The antics that follow are both poignant and hilarious. This book made me laugh out, and it made me choke back some tears. There was also the thoughts of …..he didn’t just do that! Overall I found this an enjoyable book to read, my only regret was I wished the epilogue was longer. I wanted to find out more about Renee. I received this book from BookSirens. This story was a little sad, as Everett tried to come to terms with his wife's sudden death. It was also funny and lighter at times, especially with the cases he was given, and Renee's tendency to pop up at awkward times. The popping up was what made it harder for Everett to move forward with his life. He was stuck in limbo, and so was she, not able to move on until they figured out why she was stuck.
While this wasn't anywhere near as dark as the author's other works, I still enjoyed it. An emotional but funny read.

Everrets life changes when his wife Renee takes her own life, following his story of grief, and life after death, along with talking to his wifes ghost, makes this story different from any other or Laurens work, theirs light hearted moment but mixed with dark themes, that take our emotions on a ride. engaging, read not to be missed

What an unique story. Everett loses his wife Renee. This was so unusual but not bad, after she dies, she appears to him. So essential he ends up talking to his deceased wife. It was definitely a different kind of read but one that keeps you interested.

This was a very entertaining story that I enjoyed from beginning to end. It was slightly dark (but not as dark as some of this author’s other books), suspenseful, and funny. Being haunted by your wife’s ghost is no joke (as Everett soon finds out).

I enjoyed this story and the quirkiness of it.

The writing felt immature and amateurish. The story was boring. I predicted the twist at the end, and it wasn't a great twist anyway. I didn't like the humor or any of the characters. At least it was a quick read.

AfterWife by Lauren Biel

This was a soul shuffling experience. I feel altered and renewed. Miss Biel has the knack for writing complex characters who are relatable. Who can be you, me and the people we know initimately.

I had put off Afterwife for a relaxed evening and finally thought a month after it's release on Halloween eve, it's the best way I can celebrate it. With a warm drink, I began to read the story of Renee, Everett and getting over their loss of each other. I knew of the premise but didn't know about the ride I was about to embark on.

Renee is funny, her comedic timing is everything. Being a ghost is hard but Gods, she pulls it off. While harbouring a secret of her own, she helps (or tries to at least) her husband get over her. She wants him to move on, and start anew.

Everett on the other hand is rusty. Grief stricken, with a dead wife who pops up without a sound, he has to navigate through new dates and figure out what will bring peace to Renee who's stuck between the realms.

This is a unique book. Full disclosure, little steam so don't go into this thinking it's a dark romance or something that will make you hot and bothered. But the writing was great, and I kept turning pages. To get to the end of the mystery and see how it ends for Ev.

I almost pitied him. I am in no way exaggerating when I say Biel's books make me feel. With a snotty nose and fucked up sinuses, I loved the experience this book provided. Left me warm and with a fresh new perspective.

"Please forgive me. I won't ever forgive myself." - Renee, pg. 2

When Everett comes home to discover his wife has taken her own life, he thought that he would have to suffer alone. He soon discovers this isn't the case as Renee's appariation appears during her funeral. Of course, this leaves Everett with very mixed feelings.

The biggest feeling he has though was guilt, wondering why she did it and if he could have stopped her. "What if I had gotten home just half an hour earlier? What if I hit fewer red lights? What if I had waited to look over that case?" -Everett, pg. 9

He needs answers but when he tries to talk to Renee about it, she states she doesn't remember or changes the subject. This leads Everett to believe she is keeping/ hiding something from him. Is that the case or is he just imagining it?

Renee wants to help Everett 'move on' with his life but pushing him to do so could end up hurting him more, or cause him to make big mistakes. However, the more time they spend together the more her behavior begins to change. Is that what is holding her back or is it just to make sure Everett moves on.

As always, Lauren Biel did a beautiful job in hitting real life situations. This story was very different for her but still very good. Definitely something that makes you think. As with most of Lauren's work, there are some triggers, which you can find at laurenbiel.com

For anyone craving a story that breaks away from the standard romance tropes and offers something fresh and thought-provoking, I wholeheartedly recommend this book. It’s a 10/10 experience for those willing to explore a narrative that dives deep into the intricacies of flawed humanity. Just be sure to pay attention to the trigger warnings; the themes explored can be quite intense.
This book stands out as an exceptionally unique take on the romance genre, far exceeding the usual expectations. I’ve always had a soft spot for deeply flawed characters who struggle through life’s challenges, and this story takes that concept to another level, exploring the complexities of existence—both in life and the afterlife, particularly through the character of Renee.
The narrative is filled with raw, poignant scenes that can be quite challenging to read. However, these moments are incredibly powerful, skillfully crafted to enhance the emotional weight of the story. Each scene builds toward a climax that is not only intense but also deeply satisfying for all the characters involved. The journey traverses a wide range of emotions, from somber reflections on life and loss to moments of unexpected humor that provide much-needed levity. This blend of tones keeps the reader engaged and invested in the characters' arcs, making it impossible to set the book down.

I'm a Laurel Biel fan from day one. I started with Captured, and I never looked back as I started working through her list of books. As she clearly states in the blurb, this book is nothing like anything else she has written, but I think it's in my top 5 favorites of hers🫣

This book was so FUNNY 🤣 Don't get me wrong, there are definitely some very heavy themes in this book, but it is packed with dark humor, and I was actually laughing out loud at some parts. Everett's wife Renee has passed, but she is having a hard time moving on. Queue the awkward, inappropriately timed and hilarious moments that Renee just ✨️appears✨️ while they try to find a way for her to be at peace.

Also, can we talk about the 3rd person POV flow!? It was executed beautifully🤌 I am not usually one to read a 3rd person book...I usually have a more difficult time connecting with the characters or the story and often end up dnfing because I'm just not able to get into it. That wasn't a problem here.

AfterWife by Lauren Biel hits differently.
If you're familiar with Lauren’s books, you likely know her for morally grey (sometimes pitch-black) male main characters and intense spicy content. AfterWife, however, takes a very different route.

While it doesn’t contain the dark romance themes typical of her other works, it deals with heavy subject matter — primarily suicide.

Told in third person, the story follows Everett, a defense attorney who lives for his work, and his wife Renee. After Renee dies by suicide, Everett finds himself completely lost. But Renee, unable to rest in peace, begins to haunt her now-widowed husband.

Though the book lacks the usual heat found in Biel's other stories, it's beautifully written and even manages to weave in moments of humor despite its weighty themes.

AfterWife is haunting, heartfelt, and beautifully written. It stayed with me long after I turned the last page.

Spice rating: 1/5

It’s a very different story from any romance book I have ever read.

Everett loses his wife Renee to suicide. Renee gets stuck in limbo after her death and we spend the whole book reading about Everett dealing with this kind of grief and trying to help Renee cross over to the other side.

Both Everett and Renee were flawed characters and that made them feel more real to me. It was a bit hard to root for them as people but I also only wanted the best for them.

This book made me feel all types of emotions. It made me laugh out loud a few times, frustrated me in the best way possible and also got me to tear up near the end. It was a beautiful story and I would highly recommend reading it.

Please check the content warnings if you plan on reading it as it deals with some heavy topics.

Though this book is different than the books that o like to read, it's Lauren's book so i had to, and did good, because its goooood! Ablsolutely different than her other books, and it has third person POV which was kind of weird...buuuuut....

The dark humor was AMAZING and the story keeps you an edge! Easy to read with well written characters. Another thing that i really enjoyed in this book was that the story wasn't all sunshines and rainbows, but more realistic. With their ups and downs and characters that had flaws that made them relatable.

Lauren is one of my favourite authors, i love her style or writing , her books and so far she hadnt let me down. If you see her name on it read it!!
Please check the warning list though.

This book was different than the usual romance novels I normally read. It’s concept was unusual but an interesting change with twists I didn’t see coming. The writer gives us a peak into the darker side of love and life without thrusting us down the rabbit hole.

If you are looking for the usual boy meets girl, they fall in love and live happily ever after, you need to choose a different book.

However, if you are looking for somewhat of a more realistic story of ups and downs and sideways rolls with the eventual HEA, this is a good choice… darkness and humor and reality all combine in this tale of one man’s search for love and answers to life’s toughest questions.

This book.... Omg this book... It made me laugh, angry, and want to cry. It TUGGED at my heartstrings.

Lauren, you are seriously in my top 5 list of favorite authors. This story was simply amazing and couldn't have been more perfect.

The way you wrote Everett, more men like him need to be written. While I don't mind the bad boy 😅, Everett is seriously adorable, and such an admirable man. I'm so happy things went the way they did in this story. But I hate Roman, and after everything, I don't care much for Renee, although I guess I felt a pang or two of sympathy for her.

For readers that want a story to just punch em' in their feels, this book is IT

Thisssss one! Ok so y’all know I am OBSESSED with me some Lauren B 👏🏻
But I gotta be honest and non bias here. This isn’t what I was expecting to read from her. Don’t get me wrong, once I got like 30% in I could NOT put my kindle down 😂
The pace of this book made it so easy to read and the suspense kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time! I even messaged my girl and was like I think I know what’s going on and she was like “you’ll see” 🤭
Spoiler alert: I had no idea what tf was going on 😂😂
Anywayssss… the dark humor and banter was perfection and so relatable 🫠😂
I wouldn’t categorize this book as spicy, maybe one 🌶️ at the most. But definitely worth the read! If you’re a Lauren girly (or guyly 💁🏻‍♀️ that’s not a word, it’s fiiiiine) give this one a whirl 💜

Afterwife by Lauren Biel is a dark paranormal romantic dramedy novel. So when I read the premise that she wrote this with her husband I knew this book was going to be a little different. I really wish I could just hang out and be friends with Lauren Biel because she just has such special humor and way of looking at things. Grief is hard but so many of us use a lot of dark humor to get through it.
Everett and Renee go through a lot in this book despite the dark humor. There is a wide range of emotions and the author really tackles some big topics.
If you can handle the TWs I definitely say check this book out. It was a good book and very thought provoking. It tugs at the heart strings but I enjoyed it.

A different kind of book from the standard romances of Lauren Biel. This one is of a husband and a wife. The husband is often spending long nights at his job and less nights at home with his wife. Instantly we learn his wife commits suicide.

This book is the after, him collecting himself and reputting himself on the market with one small issue: he sees his dead wife. His dead wife seems to be "haunting" him coming to him whenever he thinks of her and he can talk to her and she talks back. She "doesnt remember" why she killed herself and doesnt know why shes stuck in this limbo but swears its not his fault. She tries to help him move on thinking that will help her move to the next chapter of her after life.

It was a cute quick read very enjoyable.

I was drawn to the blurb of this book, it sounded both funny and interesting.

It was a little funny, and a little interesting, but mostly it was weird. Not bad weird, but not really good weird either. Just weird.

The relationship between Everett and his late wife Renee is weird, but that’s understandable, she’s dead after all.

Renee pushing Everett to get it on with some other woman is weirder and don’t get me started on his office romance. Or the people he work with.

I read it through but it started better than it ended. Well, the end was good I guess, but it felt rushed after the prolonged agony of Everett, and quite weird.
