STARFLEET CORPS OF ENGINEERS

Continuing the all-new trilogy that tells the origin of the Starfleet Corps of Engineers!

While the U.S.S. da Vinci has managed to stop a ship that was careening out of control, they still have work to do: the vessel's computer has broken down, and the ship cannot function without it.

This echoes the early days of the S.C.E.:

Over a century before the days of the da Vinci, the Starship Enterprise™ encountered -- and deactivated -- a world-running computer called Landru on Beta III. In the aftermath of the incident, a team of engineers, led by Montgomery Scott, is tasked with getting Beta III back on its feet. But even in "death," Landru's influence can still be felt....

About the author

Dayton Ward

112 books318 followers
Dayton is a software developer, having become a slave to Corporate America after spending eleven years in the U.S. Marine Corps. When asked, he’ll tell you that he left home and joined the military soon after high school because he’d grown tired of people telling him what to do all the time.

Ask him sometime how well that worked out.

In addition to the numerous credits he shares with friend and co-writer Kevin Dilmore, he is the author of the Star Trek novels In the Name of Honor and Open Secrets, the science fiction novels The Last World War and The Genesis Protocol, and short stories which have appeared in the first three Star Trek: Strange New Worlds anthologies, the Yard Dog Press anthology Houston, We’ve Got Bubbas, Kansas City Voices Magazine and the Star Trek: New Frontier anthology No Limits. Though he currently lives in Kansas City with wife Michi and daughters Addison and Erin, Dayton is a Florida native and still maintains a torrid long-distance romance with his beloved Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

An OK follow-up to the first book. They didn’t have to put the Foundations series in 3 books, though. All together the three books would probably only fill 200 pages, and that’s will all the repetition and extraneous words included. Still, I like the story enough to finish it.

Star Trek: S. C. E.: #18 Foundations, Part 2 by Dayton Ward & Kevin Dilmore It took me about a year to finally finish this story - it's not a bad story, as it deals again with the crew of the Lovell and depicts the aftermath of the shut-down of the computer Landru, framed by a similar situation faced by the da Vinci's crew... but honestly, I found the prose difficult to connect with. I don't need endless repetitions in a 100 pages story. Things aren't quite so complicated that I can't grasp them the first time around. And I'm still waiting for some fleshing out of main characters - what does it say that al-Khaled is better portrayed than most of the protagonists (which saves this part its second star, mind you)? Granted, he had a good stint in Vanguard, and I absolutely liked him and his crew there, on the other hand, the da Vinci now had 18 short-stories and they are nowhere near any kind of complex characterization.

Just the thought of Wildfire, which is said to be a turning point within the series, is keeping me going right now.

This is a continuation of the previous volume. But the flashback story is brand new. Scotty is left with a team of engineers to solve the problems that occurred after Kirk talked a planet controlling computer to death. He has to help the people survive without one main computer. It's a really good sequel to the TV episode. A good read.

I fully admit to having a very big bias when it comes to the original Star Trek TV series. This was a very good sequel to "Return of the Archons" (an episode already revisited by the SCE series in Book #14, Caveat Emptor).

A post-Return of the Archons novella. In the aftermath of the episiode, a team of engineers, including Scotty & al-Khaled of the Lovell. A pretty good one.
