The war continues in this second volume, between the Empire and the Nebulis Sovereignty. A mission to gain control of a vortex that appeared, so that the enemy territory does not gain the magical energy from this new vortex, makes the Empire send a lot of units from the Empire.
The author creates more characters and explains their details but the forbidden love and Pyrrhic competition between Iska (soldier knight/ Saint Disciple) and Alice (Princess witch) to gain the upper hand.
They both seek peace and the well being of their loved ones, but are unwilling to let go of this war.
The author originally stated in volume 1 that this volume 2 would be published in July 2017 and was delayed to November 2017 so it took 6 months to get published. This means that the author took about a page a day, 30 a month and six months to complete the 200 pages plus illustrations for this second volume.
There is no real charming banter between the main characters, or overwhelming action, fantasy, originality in the story or this volume in the light novel series.
Some light novel authors make the mistake to write "checkmate" in their victory movement, but all of them forget that in their "alternate reality world" there is no chess game or similar, so those characters know nothing about a game that is only played on Earth and thus only earthlings that understand these games, can understand the "checkmate" statement. It is naive and egocentric to extrapolate "checkmate" to other worlds that don't even have those games much less the victory statement.

Not bad, but not great. I would have enjoyed the star-crossed lovers to have more close encounters. The battles were pretty decent, but a lot of the rest of it was just kind of there. I saw the end coming from the the moment when we learn that a Vortex doesn't turn anyone into a witch (or sorcerer). Not that guessing things to come is bad, but in this case I found it particularly easy to see. *shrug*

This may sound like I really didn't like it, but that's not true. I read it quickly and am certainly going to be picking up volume 3 at some point. Just don't expect it to be earth shattering.

Verdict: Nothing spectacular. If you don't have the cash to drop on it, talk to your local library. More and more of them seem to be building light novel collections.

This second volume felt like a filler book to me. We do get some more info about how the Nebulis Sovereignty is organized, how vortexes work, the Eight Apostles, etc. But the action is downplayed in this novel and it felt slow until the final few chapters. While it was done purposefully, I miss the interactions between Alice and Iska. The ending however gives the third book a chance to bring a lot more to the table. Will be continuing with the series for sure.

Didn't enjoy as much as volume 1. Much of it felt like setup and I wish there were more Alice x Iska moments actually together. The end battles were the best parts but it wasn't enough for me. The middle felt a bit of a slog and minor annoyances like Mismis being so weak and incapable and Iska explaining his powers put me off

Looking forward to volume 3 though.
