Southern Beaus #2

The Wolfe Proxy

Rate this book
(Gay / Erotica / Contemporary) Ruthless CEO Quinton Wolfe sets off every alarm on sculptor Max Bowman's warning system. No way is that playboy getting near Max's sister, the newest shareholder in Wolfe's multinational corporation. No matter Quint's charming smile and sexy form, Max won't let his kid sister get taken in by that Lothario. Even if it means Max cuts a deal with Big Bad Wolfe himself. And what a deal! Max becomes Quint's play toy. Good thing Max enjoys it. He'll just play the game until he can turn the tables on the CEO. Or that's the plan. But somehow, even knowing the CEO is a ruthless snake at the core, Max still lets Quint worm his way right into Max's heart. Cutting Quint out of his life is the best thing Max can do. So why does it feel like Max might never be able to breathe again? It doesn't help that Quint's every bit as heartbroken and miserable. So maybe Max's view of Quint was skewed by the media. But can he separate the ruthless CEO from the gentle, caring man who loves him? And can he trust either one?

About the author

T.D. McKinney

T. D. McKinney was born with eclectic tastes. Author, artist, web designer - those tastes show in the careers she's chosen.

Growing up on the American Gulf Coast, she gained a great appreciation for all things Southern and a fascination with what the community around her termed the War of Northern Aggression. Frequent trips to New Orleans to visit relatives instilled an early love for that city and for the Cajun culture. One of her earliest memories is viewing Mardi Gras parades when she was three years old. She freely admits that at the tender age of six she fell in love with both Barnabas Collins of Dark Shadows’ fame and Jonny Quest’s scientist-father, Benton. Sherlock Holmes followed soon after as one of the great abiding interests of her life. A long time fan of science fiction and horror, she met her husband while selling art at a science fiction convention.

These early influences doubtless explain a great deal about the author and her writings. There is very little she doesn’t find interesting whether it’s art, music, history, vampires, web design, or forensic science. Everything is there to be explored, investigated, and attempted at least once. This trait often carries over into her writing. She loves exploring characters that are not afraid to take a risk or step outside the constraints of society or family. And if the character doesn’t want to take that chance, she likes creating situations that require they do so.

T. D. lives in the Dallas-Fort Worth area of north Texas with her husband and young daughter. With so many careers, she keeps quite busy. In her spare time, she shares her husband’s interest in vampires, the internet, science fiction, collecting swords, and all things Japanese.

Max is a not so struggling artist who lives as he likes: openly gay he has the reputation to be a good lover but not a constant one, he only does one night stand. So when his sister Jenn comes to live with him and she sets her eyes on Quinton, the CEO of the firm on which Jenn has a big shares, Max recognizes in him a twin soul, only the "straight" version: Quinton is famous in the city to be the most wanted bachelor, but he is never serious with his conquests. Since Jenn is a very nice girl, innocent and sweet, Max will not let Quint treat her like another notch in his belt. He manages to meet Quint in private and he goes all Big Brother with him.

First time Quint sees Max, he immediately realizes that he would prefer to have the handsome man in his bed rather than his sister; and when Max threatens him, Quint reacts as only a business man would do, with a private agreement: he will stay far from Jenn (at least from her bed) if Max will be his boy toy. Quint really doesn't imagine that Max will agree to his proposal, also since he doesn't know that the man is gay. And when Max instead simply says "yes", he isn't expecting for him to take the lead role in the relationship. Quint always played the role of the boss, something he learnt from his father; both Quint and his father were good men, with old fashion idea on what is private life and what is work, your private persona should not interfere with your public imagine, and with "strangers" you have always to play the detached and aloof role of the business man... never letting know to your enemy that you have an heart.

Quint took a bit too seriously his role, and now he actually doesn't have a private life; and since he lost his father, his only relatives, he now has no one with whom he could show his true self; he is captive of his public persona, and neither Max, at first, can see beyond it. But when Quint lets for a moment the mask go, Max finds a different man in bed with him, someone who needs tenderness and assurances. It's quite interesting to read the shifting in role between Max and Quint: no one of them is a perfect leader and no one of them is a perfect follower. I believe that both of them built a shield against the world, Quint becoming the cold business man, Max the careless don juan, but behind that shield, they are both men with deep emotions, sometime also easy to be carry away from them; when they are with someone they trust, or when they believe to be alone, they are also men who doesn't fear to prove their feelings even with tears. But even if they cries a lot, I don't have of them the impression that they are weak, in a way they are like all the artists should be: to pass on emotion they need to feel harder than anyone else.

It's a very romantic love story, with an heavy push on the romantic side; I like as both main characters are completely involved in the relationship from the first moment, and as they prove it both with words than signs; I like as they are weak in front of their feelings but not in front of the world; and I like as they take the responsibility for their mistakes and try to righten them.

Totally sweet and sappy! of course I love sweet and sappy!
Anyway, Quint is supposed to be this big bad corporate CEO, I never really saw it, but ok, of that's who he is supposed to be, and then there is Max the slutty and jaded artist.
Max thinks Quint is going to use his sister to gain advantage, so instead he goes along with the proposal Quint makes to him so he will leave poor Jenn alone.
Still not sure about Jenn, why the need to make her out as such a fluff head and then as a great thinker!? Oh well..no biggie.
Well, Quint and Max fall in love....quickly, but of course Max has to go and be an asshat...
There is a lot of love and a lot of crying..quite a bit of art and it was a great sweet and totally fluffy relaxing read!

Quinton Wolfe has set his sights on being the majority shareholder in the company that has been in his family for a few generations – this was not to be when Max Bowman’s sister turns up with her own large slice of the company and Max is like a watchdog, on the look out for any and all move that Quinton will make against his sister.

And Quinton does make his move, but it is unexpected for them both – firstly Quinton makes a move against Max himself and Max accepts which Quinton did not anticipates. Going with the flow – it turns out to be a soul shattering experience for them both.

All does not bode well for them – because these two men are not what they seem, beneath the exterior they show the public they have their secrets and their turmoil's to deal with and it is that secret and turmoil that is the crust of their problems – something has to give and someone has to do something because these two aren’t about to do it on their own.

I love this book – Quinton was so not what I was expecting, he comes across as really this big bad wolf but he was really a pussy cat once you found which buttons to press and Max found these button straight away. Max himself is no wallflower himself - preferring to be out of the limelight he knows when to turn the table and take charge and he does so in style..

Totally hot smut follows and I was loving it.

This is a feel great book, not that the characters weren’t well develop or not that the plot held me for the whole length of the book – but the authors toss in enough twist and turns and some wonderful support cast to make this not only have the happily ever after feel but also a little hurt along the way is not all bad feel as well.

I like the voices of these two authors, it didn’t get caught up in the complexities of the business arena that the book was set it, they both had a fresh approve to an age old plot – and I liked it alot.

If you are looking for that book with the right bit of depth wrapped around a plot with enough innuendo ands armchair psychiatrist this is the book for you..

A simply smashing read.

Quinton Wolfe is not very happy when he realizes a big part of his company has been given to Jennifer Bowman. When he discovers that Jennifer wants to take an active role in the company he decides to take action, personal action. However, her brother Max, isn't about to let anything, or anyone, mess with his sister. Quint, hoping to get rid of Max, offers him a proposition and is utterly shocked when Max takes him up on it. Determined to not back out Quint soon finds himself in bed with Max and neither man is prepared for the results. The sex is hot but it's the emotional connection that develops that they will have to face. In the meantime Jennifer falls for Max's friend and their little side story was a fun part of the book.

This story is fun, sexy, emotional and also quite romantic. It reminded me of a Harlequin novel with the storyline of the super sexy billionaire and the sibling ready to 'sacrifice' himself for their loved one, although it wasn't really a sacrifice once they got together. Quint and Max appear to be total opposites, Quint is sophisticated, rich and with the reputation of being a ladies man while Max is an artist, out and proud, and with a strong connection to his sister, but they soon discover they aren't quite as different as they first thought. I enjoyed reading about Quint and Max's relationship and was engaged in the story from beginning to end.

1.5 stars. While the storyline for this m/m romance had potential, the intermittently overdone writing kept pulling me out of the story as I flinched at particularly florid phrasing. Add insta-love, and… *sigh*

Take a break from this story, maybe finish it later. I felt the main protagonist were too emotional and the the dialog were too designed.

An entertaining read. The 2nd in a series. You do not need to read the first book as the stories do not have anything to do with each other yet; however, they do intertwine later in the series so you should read them all in order if you plan to buy more. I've read all 4 that are now out and enjoyed them all.

This book has some hot characters suffering through some angst. I found them lovable, entertaining and sexy.

I enjoyed this more than I expected to though it took me awhile to warm up to Quinton. I'm not sure I like him all that much even though, in the end, he "remembered" where his priorities lay. Most memorable bit in this book, though, is my noticing this character, Bolt Truitt. I have Tensaw Blues but I might just take a detour and read Copperhead Road, Bolt's book.

Read this back to back with the sequel, Tensaw Blues and enjoyed it. 3.5 stars. It's a pretty straightforward romance and when I came to the end, I was glad I waited for the sequel to come out before reading WP because on its own, WP is forgettable.

Starts out as a sort of m/m Harlequin presents, only with, you know, men. However, once the couple has a conflict (the Big Misunderstanding), one of them turns into a wet dishrag. I think this is sort of the m/m equivalent of an Elizabeth Rolls romance! I liked it although it wasn't really all that great, because I like it when an author makes their romance protagonists totally miserable.

Aw how sweet. I liked many parts (the angsty bits. And that first time shot and sweet). It stretched on and on though. I was hoping it would end far sooner, but it was satisfying after a bit, so in the end, that was ok. Too sappy though. True, everlasting love in a weekend? Pfft. Still, sweet, nicely angsty and entertaining all in all.
