Cycling is one of the most popular and fastest growing activities in the nation—today more than 56 million recreational cyclists bike regularly in the United States. Now leading cycling journalists Roy M. Wallack and Bill Katovsky have assembled into one essential resource everything cyclists needs to know to bike for a lifetime. These experts present groundbreaking information on medical research, training techniques, nutrition, and technology and equipment trends that impact the sport at every level. They also assess the risks and provide informative solutions to many bike-related conditions that have been overlooked, sensationalized, or are just emerging, including impotence, osteoporosis, weakened immune systems, sore backs, depression, and even fractured relationships. Also featured are a dozen in-depth interviews with cycling legends, such as Gary Fisher, Ned Overend, John Howard, Missy Giove, Eddie B, and Marla Steb. This authoritative guide to getting the most out of your bike riding will appeal to cycling enthusiasts of all ages and abilities, and is a must-read for everyone who loves to get on a bike to compete, to keep fit and promote longevity, for fun, or simply to get from point A to point B.
Very dated in many respects, but I'll choose to call it 'classic' :). Plodded my way through this over many months, just reading a few pages here and there. Much of the info is of course still very relevant, and the interviews and stories alone make it a good read..
As the title indicates, this book gives instructions and recommendations on how to bike until you are 100 years old, and without saying so on the cover, ultimately how to bike to 100 and ride a century (100 miles) when one is 100 years old.
Many people would first think this book would not suit themselves because of the idea of riding a bike until you are 100 years old; however, much of this book is instructions on not only how to ride until you are 100 years old but also to train yourself properly to prevent issues pertaining to bone loss, physical conditioning, and others.
I am still reading this book, currently approaching the halfway point, but the more I read it, the more I wish I could hire a personal trainer to teach me how to apply everything in this book to my own riding.
An excellent overview on training and preparation for a lifetime of bicycle riding. The authors ask "Why not ride when you're 100 years old?" Why not, indeed? They then provide chapters on fitness, including yoga and weight training, discussions on how to cross-train for maximum fitness, the hazards of only using the bike for fitness, nutrition, how to maintain relationships while performing endurance exercises, how to handle external forces while riding (like bears, cougars, abusive motorists), and many other things. I'd highly recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in any kind of bike riding.
This is an unusual book in that it's not about the training plan on GETTING to 100 miles in the saddle, but more of a companion book to cover a number of other topics: saddle sores, how to crash, nutrition, bike fit, etc.
Lots of interesting nuggets interspersed with stories from bikers and examples.
Geared more towards the new cyclist that season pros, you are bound to get a valuable nugget or two from this book... with a few laughs along the way.
This is a book for cyclist. I was looking for a book to show me how to ride a century ride and miss understood the ride to 100. If you are not a cyclist the only joys you may find will be in the mini stories of some great bike riders. Otherwise it's all about training and how to stay fit so we can continue to ride until age 100.
