Arras’ book on Italian primitives is splendidly illustrated and interesting, yet quite erudite. I don’t see how someone that isn’t familiar with Dante and Giotto could make sense out of the text wherein the author is trying to demonstrate how the painters of Sienna, Ferrare, Florence and other cultural centers in 14th (Trecento)) and 15th (Quattrocento) centuries developed their particular styles and how they led to the Renaissance of Raphael, Michelangelo and Raphael. That being said, there is a lot of insight into local differences and some useful keys in reading paintings from this era which differed immensely from our own. I have come to appreciate Simone Martini and Duccio due to the extraordinary classes I have taken at the Ecole du Louvre, but Arasse definitely gave me more insight into their culture and the new ideas they brought to cassone (wood panel) painting. In fact, it was the primitives that developed perspective..
