Such a good volume! We got to see Rukia face somebody from her past, that in reality, was not really him but an arrancar that absorbed his body and his memories. I did not know where this fight was headed, but we got to see Rukia face her past and grow even stronger. Such an emotional moment for Rukia, but she did good. Keep fighting Rukia! This arc is really changing all of them. Also don’t die Chad! Can’t wait to see what happens next for Renji and Ichigo.

"Sorry. I've never been fond of sunlight. The sunlight never penetrates the palace. I'll take my mask and introduce myself. My name is Aaroniero. I'm the Noveno (no.9) Espada, Aaroniero Arruruerie."

Volume 30 opens up with the final of the Chad vs Gantenbeinne fight. Chad not only wins it, he's also been able to discover his power through it, so he's deciding to spear Gantenbeinne's life. His goal is to join his friends in search of Orihime, but the moment he's being free from the fight, another opponent appears.

Chad (speaking to Gantenbeinne): "Thank you. I couldn't have done it without you. Now I'm stronger than ever."
Nnoitra showing up out of nowhere and nearly killing Chad with one blow: WHAT DID YOU SAY, WEAKLING?

Everyone felt the moment Chad fell down. Of course, Ichigo took it the hardest way, but decided to keep on running to find Orihime. The situation is incredibly hard for him, but he knows there is nothing he can do, except believing that his friend will survive.

Meanwhile, Orihime keeps on staring at the window (what she looking for there, I have no idea), until Ulquiorra appears. It's honestly kind of funny how their scenes look like. She's captured, standing in her room just looking at the window (and praying? Maybe? Idk) and when Ulquiorra appears, he tells her some stuff to trigger her off, and then leaves. How are people shipping these two is truly beyond me (if you think about it, their eventual relationship would be based on the stockholm syndrome). What is new about this particular encounter is the fact that this time Orihime lets her emotions rule over her mind and slaps Ulquiorra.

He did deserve it. He really did. So I cheered up for her. I would cheer up for her more if she were this feisty in the future situations too *sigh*

Anyways, what Volume 30 focuses on is not Ichigo, not Orihime, not Chad, but Rukia. It's her time to shine. Her fight. She thinks she's ready for it, but when her actual opponent shows up, she freezes.

Because she doesn't see an enemy she need to kill. She sees her former mentor, Kaien Shiba. The guy who's supposed to be dead.

"Do you think I'm an impostor? You killed me. I hope you haven't forgotten me. I'm Kaien Shiba, former Assistant Captain of Thirteenth Company. I merger with a Hollow and here I am. And... you're Rukia Kuchiki. The woman who took my life."

Rukia's emotions are all over the place, because it's Kaien, standing right in front of her, all smiley, all goofy and warm, behaving like he always did. Like nothing had changed. Like he never jumped on her sword and never been killed. How is this possible? How is he alive and why is he here? Things are confusing, but Rukia's happy. Because it's Kaien, her former mentor. The one person that had such a big impact on her life. He's there and he's alive. It's all that matters.

But suddenly Kaien attacks. Wait, what?

It seems like he didn't forgot about what had happened that one day in the woods. And now the time came for Rukia to pay the price for Kaien's death.

"Rukia, don't you know our Captain's philosophy?"
"No."
"There are two kinds of battles. Battles that protect lives and battles that protect honor. That's what Captain Ukitake believes. But, you know, Kuchiki... I think what he means is that everything we have to protect comes down to one thing."
"One thing? What's that?"
"The heart."

The battle between Rukia and Aaroniero belongs in my list of one of the most heartbreaking scenes in Bleach. It's so sad that she had to fight against the person that had the biggest impact on her life. It's sad that she had to realize that, when she killed him, she never really saved him - because he never got the chance to rest. When he was alive, he was possessed and forced to be used by a Hollow. When he died, he was also forced to be used by a Hollow. He was never at peace. It's also very sad that Rukia had to get through her traumatic moment all over again - she had to use her sword against her mentor to kill him. There was a lot of pain. But there was also a lot of relief, because it's finally over. Kaien is finally free.

"Where do you think the heart is?"
"It's... um... somewhere around here, I think."
"Well... If you ask me, the heart is right here. Whenever people grow close, a heart is born between them. It isn't inside our bodies. Whenever we care about something... Whenever we care about another person... a heart is born. If you were alone in the world, I don't think you could have a heart. Don't think about it too hard. If your heart longs to be here, then your heart is here. If your heart is here, that is a reason enough to be here."

The Rukia/Kaien flashbacks killed me. I knew that they were coming, of course, the anime did show them as well. But as usual, when you think you're prepared for something, it turns out that you're not prepared at all. It was such a bittersweet moment. Sweet, because it was so nice to see Kaien giving a clearly lost Rukia a very meaningful life lessons, especially while knowing that they had shaped the way Rukia's now. It was also nice to see Kaien again, and I could not get the resemblance between him and Ichigo out of my head (especially after knowing their, hm, heritage). The moment was also bitter, because I knew how it all ended. I wish things were different, for both Kaien and Rukia. But this is how life works - a happy ending isn't for everyone.

"You see, Rukia... In the future, whenever you fight, there's one thing you have to make sure of. You mustn't die alone. Our bodies are konpaku. When we die, they turn into dust and become the reishi that shapes the Soul Society. So what becomes of the heart? You leave your heart with your friends. That way your heart lives on in them. That's why, Rukia, you mustn't die alone." 😔

Now that Rukia's fight had ended, there is the time to focus on the other friends and their struggles. Renji is in big trouble - his opponent is another Espada member - Arrancars' lunatic scientist - named Szayelaporro. Chad's down after his encounter with Nnoitra (also an Espada member). And on the end of the volume, Ichigo suddenly came across Ulquiorra. How will these fights look like? Both Szayelaporro and Ulquiorra, as Espada members, are insanely strong. Will our heroes survive?

Some of my thoughts I like to share:

~ I can't even imagine the mental state of Ichigo right now. He got beaten up pretty badly by Dordoni. One of his friends is still captured. Two of his other friends are dying and he cannot do anything to help them. And there is no way for him to find out how others are doing. Anyone can die at any moment. He also can die at any moment. He met Ulqiorra again and it means only one thing. I know, I KNOW what's coming and I'm TERRIFIED 😰
~ The introduction of Nnoitra had perfectly shown his character.
~ The fact that Rukia didn't want to die until she had rescued her friend and didn't want to give up, despite being basically with one foot underground, is incredibly admirable and shows how strong and overall amazing this character is.
~ Kaien's Zanpakuto/Bankai is beautiful. He's like a king of the oceans when he has Nejibana in his hand. So beautiful, but also so powerful and dangerous, just like water.
~ The way Glotoneria looks like is always giving me the ick 😬
~ The fact that there was a blue sky in Hueco Mundo made by Aizen, despite knowing that it's Aaroniero's weakness, tells me that he purposely wanted him to lose. Gin also purposely wanted him to lose when he guided Rukia to his palace.
~ Guys, how it's possible for an Arrancar to have a brother (I'm pointing at the Grantz siblings)? Aren't they made of Menos Grande (who are made out of hundreds of Hollows)?

As everyone continues their foray into Hueco Mundo, Chad sees his battle come to an end with an epiphanic moment regarding his abilities. Renji, on the other hand, is up against a new Arrancar who controls his environment and is bound to make things quite complicated for him to move on.

The focus of this story arc, however, is set on Rukia who encounters the Espada Aaroniero Arruruerie, who is actually his beloved mentor Kaien. Things get oddly intimate and confusing but ultimately leads her to remember an important life lesson about where the heart is.

Mangaka Tite Kubo continues his brilliant character development throughout this saga while leaving the overarching plot behind to better focus on each of these characters and the action sequences that come with each of them.

Bleach remains good but it is starting to feel like Daja Vu.

So basically it's just each member of Ichigo crew facing off against the new baddies who feel remarkably similar to the soul society members but without the deeper personalities and learning about the characters. I can't help but feel a bit bored. However, the art itself is pretty solid and the fights and style are fun. But the "hitting the heart" with giving Rukia more background came off as rather flat.

Either way decent volume.

It's another volume that demonstrates that Tite Kubo's strength is in his characterization, not in his plotting. This volume is domninated by Rukia's battle with an Arrancar and it does a good job of developing a character largely neglected by the last story arc.

Otherwise it's fight-fight-fight-fight and demonstrating that the bad guys are even more powerful than the last set of bad guys because the heroes are stronger but not strong enough. Unfortunately, because the villains are continually beating the heroes within an inch of their life, yet not actually killing them, they lose credibility.

This was a good and emotional volume where Rukia fights with Aaroniero Arleri who has taken the form of KAEIN and at first he decieves her but ultimately through her memories of the real Kaien and her will and resolve, she defeats the espada and we just see how much she respected her vice-captain and to honor his sayings and last wishes, she does and its a beautiful moment and an emotional one. Meanwhile Chad gets new powers and defeats another Arrancar. Next up: Ichigo vs Ulquiola! Good volume, strong moments, perfectly fleshing out Rukia and so much more!

What is your regret? They are often the moments that shape our lives the most, even for a shinigami. This volume brings to light one such regret and wields it like a psychological morningstar. Old lessons of two types of battle and where the heart remains resurface, but at a drastic cost, finishing with a classic cliffhanger. The gentle pokes Tite Kubo makes at his own obvious exposition keep the flow going and I always have at least one unchecked tear by the end.

Now we're getting somewhere. Finally!

The Espadas at long last have arrived. Bleach, Volume 30: There Is No Heart Without You primarily focuses on Rukia facing a demon from her past. Meanwhile, Chad faces off with the fifth Espada, and Renji battles with the Octava Espada, who taunts Renji with terrible news.

This new batch of villains appear to be significantly stronger than the Soul Reapers, and I worry that our favorite Shinigami may be bloodied to a pulp. The cliffhanger ending with Ulquiorra makes me very eager to pick up the next volume. Can't wait!

Best part of the entire book:
Love Orihime! Go girl!

This volume is kind of a downer. Rukia gets to shine the light in dark places and all that. She gets some nice character development. But otherwise a bummer of a volume. Good fights. Art still shines.

On my 2nd read of the series.

Bleach, Vol. 30 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next nine chapters (261–269) of the on-going manga series.

With his new Brazo Derecho del Gigante ability, Yasutora "Chad" Sado is able to defeat Arrancar 107 Gantenbainne Mosqueda before being attacked by the Quinto Espada Nnoitora Gilga. Meanwhile, Rukia Kuchiki encounters who she believed was Kaien Shiba, who explains the hollow that fused into his being allowed him to survive and he ended serving Sōsuke Aizen. Though willing to let him kill her for atonement while asking to save Orihime Inoue first, Rukia learns "Kaien" is an impostor when he asks her to slaughter her friends. Overpowered, Rukia releases her opponent is avoiding the sunlight and uses a kidō to blasts a hole in the wall.

The artificial sunlight exposes the impostor to be the Noveno Espada Aaroniero Arruruerie, who reveals that he indirectly assimilated Kaien to Rukia's horror. After Aaroniero assumes his released state, to use the full powers of the countless hollows he devoured, Aaroniero impales Rukia. However, recalling Kaien's words of how a person's heart passes to those they are close to, Rukia regains her resolve and impales Aaroniero's top skull while destroying his opponent's body with Kaien's soul now able to rest.

As Aaroniero's disembodied skulls die, Rukia collapses from her injuries and is assumed dead. Renji Abarai and Dondochakka Bilstin are confronted by Szayelaporro Grantz who is revealed to be Espada Eight. Meanwhile, Ichigo Kurosaki runs into Ulquiorra Cifer who reveals to be the one who abducted Orihime.

This tankōbon is written and illustrated by Tite Kubo. The incursion into Hueco Mundo continues as it concludes Yasutora "Chad" Sado fight with Arrancar 107 Gantenbainne Mosqueda, but faces a new foe in Quinto Espada Nnoitora Gilga. It also covered most of the battle between Rukia Kuchiki and Noveno Espada Aaroniero Arruruerie. The battles were nicely depicted and showed more of a back-story to Rukia.

All in all, Bleach, Vol. 30 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems intriguing and I cannot wait to read more.

Sometimes it's so easy to forget how God damn cold Renji is before the latter part of the series. Finally we're seeing the top 10 espadas and getting into the thick of it. Rukias fight was also well done and cool.

Whenever people grow close… a heart is born between them. It isn’t inside our bodies. Whenever we care about something… whenever we care about another person… a heart is born. If you were alone in the world…I don’t think you could have a heart.

Rukia truly will always be my favorite character in Bleach. Also, Kaien’s words softened my heart so much.

the Fruity bad-assery in this chapter is enough to make anyone shiver. and by fruity i am referring to Rukia, because she is like the sweetness of fruit. xD
i simply ADORE the way Kubo portrayed Rukia's conflictions and convictions in her fight versus the 9th Espada. and the way he drew her expressions, especially her anger was extremely impactful.
throughout this fight Rukia remains just as graceful and beautiful as ever, even in her dying moments, even though she is confronted with such devastating challenges. i love how even when she is pushed into a corner she is constantly thinking of a way to gain an advantage, constantly fighting to survive. even when she thinks she can take no more, she secretly hasnt given up. she is truly an inspiration, and she is truly a legend amongst female anime characters in my mind.
excellent volume, highly recommend it to all Fruity fans!

We saw a glimpse of this in the first arc, and now we see it full with Rukia and her 'Sin', I don't see that being a sin he was transformed and there is way for him to get back to normal :/ but :/
Kein-dono 3:) a great character!!! both the old self and this crazy one :p
Rukia's battle was great
Renji starts his own
Ulquiorra gets a slap on the face :p and we end with him and Ichigo - :( he is not ready to face an Espada :( ...

Given that Manga, and especially Shonen is split up into bigger arcs as composed to volumes I will be analyzing and reviewing this by Arc. I also reread this manga over the span of 2 months, some days reading as much as 100 chapters a day. It would be quite tedious for me to review each 7-8 chapter volume. So this will be copy and pasted throughout all of the 72 manga volumes. That being said, if you're looking at this without having viewed the series...spoiler warning. I don't recap anything, but I also mention things that happen. If you want me to answer the question "Should I pick this up?" Yes. Even if you stop at the end of the Soul Society Arc. It's worth it.

Karakura Town Arc - Chapters 1-56 - Rating: 7/10
(The official page lumps this in with the Soul Society Arc however I feel as if they are two very separate arcs with two very separate themes)
- A fun introduction.
-An interesting premise on the idea of ghosts and demons (Hollows)
-Does a good job of introducing the characters and I especially enjoyed the love for characters like Chad, Orihime and Uryu as these characters would later lose more and more spotlight as the series went on.
-It is a bit of a monster of the week. When it works, like with Chad's introduction story. It works. But Characters like Don Kanonji felt superficial and very gimmicky. Which, fair. I didn't enjoy them as much.

Soul Society Arc - Chapters 57-182 - Rating: 10/10
-The height of Bleach
-Establishes an afterlife seemingly perfectly. Later on revealed to be full of plot holes and never fleshed out but hey! That's not an issue in THIS arc. The fights are top tier, the themes of Ichigo owing a life debt to Rukia and his passion and determination to rise above literally God's army is inspiring and to this day is why I love Ichigo so much. He doesn't have some grandiose plan. He doesn't have a major goal to accomplish. He is a protector by heart, losing his mother has made him sour to failing to protect those he cares about and he'll do anything in his power never to feel that helpless again. Very powerful stuff.
-The twist near the end of this arc is revolutionary and would make waves for the next 200 chapters onward. A perfect ending and set up for the forthcoming arc.
-The only issues I have for this arc would be Ichigo's lightning speed progression. The guy goes from being able to barely defeat a third seat to besting multiple captains in roughly 100 or less chapters. I get that that is the point and him defeating captains was more of a struck of luck, but progression and pacing wise it feels very unearned and a factor of "for the plot he needed to be this strong" It only seems as fast as it is because Ichigo's progression slows drastically down for the rest of the story moving foreword so it's only now that I make that criticism.
-Also, and this will be an issue in most Shonen. There are 13 Captains with 13 Vice Captains and seats that branch all the way to 10 I believe? Regardless, there's a fudge ton of characters that are introduced here and it can get a little jarring at times. Luckily, Kubo does a great job at making their designs and characters unique despite such a large cast.

Hueco Mundo Arc - Chapters 183-423 - Rating 7/10
-This is another arc where personally I would split it up into two separate arcs. But for the sake of this review I will simply refer to the first half of the arc and the later half of the arc. First Half 9/10. Second Half. 5/10.
-The first half of this arc is a great continuation of the last. Ichigo now struggles with his inner demons and it affects his ability to protect the ones he loves. We are also introduced to a deadly unknown new villains. The Arrancars/Espada to this day remain one of my favorite villain factions in all of manga enemies.
-Just so you're aware I would say the first half of this arc ends right around the point of Ichigo vs Grimmjow. Grimmjow is one of the first Arrancar that Ichigo faces. And he's also one of two Espada that he faces three times. The conclusion of that fight shows Ichigo conquering his inner demons. Where Grimmjow is very much fighting to establish himself. Grimmjow has to fight Ichigo to prove to his fallen comrades that he is as good as he says he is. He doesn't care about Aizen, he doesn't care about the rest of the Espada. It is very personal for him. For Ichigo, Orohime is within his grasp of saving and he views this as his "final" battle. It's my favorite fight in all of Bleach.
-However, this is where things start to take a bit of dip in quality in my opinion. We had a goal and we were striving towards that goal. Each character of the original cast coming to repay the debt they made to their friend who had risked her life to save them in the Soul society arc. But somewhere along the way it seems we just had a fighter fest. Captains would face enemies with no themes or character revelations. The Espadas got a little light but nothing that made their fights compelling. You almost just feel bad for the Espada as they were monsters turned into a military force by an unstoppable tyrant. But even that wasn't enough to make half of the fights interesting. Now, that's with knowing the outcome. These fights played little importance in the larger scheme of things. Where at least in the Hueco Mundo fights each match up had the protagonists striving for a goal. Rukia to defeat Aaroneiro to free her former superiors soul. Byakuya to defend Rukia. Renji and Uryu teamwork. Nel to protect Ichigo and get revenge on Nnoitra. Whereas Stark fought Kyoraku.....cause.....and Hitsugaya fought Halibel because Water vs Ice would be cool.
-This leaves me to the end. I won't say it wasn't satisfying that Ichigo was able to defeat Aizen. And yes, I do feel like his new power was earned. 3 months of training. But this was clearly a last minute decision to save Aizen for a later date and the show must go on. I do feel like it wasn't as satisfying as 200+ chapter buildup needed to be.

The Fullbring Arc - Chapters 424-479 - Rating: 8/10
-A very underrated arc. And yes, I acknowledge that rating wise I think the Fullbring arc is superior to the Hueco Mundo arc. That is mostly true. Though I like the first half of the Hueco Mundo Arc more than the Fullbring arc. The end of the HM arc really brought it down for me. The Fullbring Arc is much more concise and is actually the shortest arc in the series and works as a glorified Ichigo getting his powers back arc. But that doesn't mean its bad.
-When I read it originally back when it was coming out in 2010. (Cause I'm Old) It wasn't phenomenal. In fact, I hated it. But wouldn't you? It took just short of a year to get to the point that we were at. But upon rereading it, it gave much deserved love to the characters who hadn't been shown love in quite some time. The original cast. It was a very character focused arc. Ichigo never seemed more human. And despite me hating it before for taking so long, reading weekly can sometimes hurt these mystery based arcs. The twist is heavily foreshadowed and I really appreciated it.
-That being said, the end was super rushed. This was a big bummer for me. The villains this time around were humans. And the ones who had the most exposure and relations with these characters were the original cast who again....were humans. So to have the soul reapers, who have no connection to the fullbringers show up and basically no diff most of the fullbringers felt very forced and fanservicey to me. This very well could have not been Kubo's call. As the community was very vocal about their dislike for this arc as it was going on. But I appreciate it now much more as I appreciate character and story over big sword fights. Lol.

The Thousand Year Blood War Arc - Chapters 424-689 - Rating: 5/10
-And we're finally here. The final and largest arc within the Bleach story. And man...does it not stick the landing.
-That being said, this arc has phenomenal moments. Kenpachi's Shikai and Bankai. Ichigo's double swords. Renji's true Bankai. Rukia's Bankai. And many more. However, they are put together against the most break neck speed arc that I have ever read. Kubo was very ambitious when he introduced 26 new villains. However, most of them got barely any screen time and a lot of them even got off screened by higher level captains. This was unlike the Espada who each got a full double page spread for their Resurrections.
-Yhwach himself was a phenomenal villain but was dealt with swiftly and imo dirty. They did him dirty.
-There was just something off. The mood changed and it was very apparent. The villains had random powers instead of the powers reflecting their personalities or needs. The finale felt so underwhelming.
-Ichigo gets to be the strongest he's ever been....but he doesn't defeat a single person besides the main villain despite being in several fights.
-It isn't a good arc. In fact, I would say it's the worst. Hopefully the anime does a better job with this already mammoth of a story. 260 chapters is no joke.

This gives the story of Bleach an Overall rating of 7.4/10. Which to me is above average. It has it's ups and downs. It's not perfect. But when it's high, it's peak shonen. But when it's low, it's very forgettable.

4/5 (Review is for the series as a whole and does not contain spoilers)

Ichigo Kurosaki is a high school student who can see ghosts. When an evil spirit, called a hollow, attacks his family, he meets Rukia, a soul reaper tasked with fighting against hollows. But when Rukia is injured, Ichigo must make the decision to take over the role of soul reaper to help fight against hollows to save his hometown.

Bleach is a classic manga and one of the more popular options for those starting out in the genre/format. It features themes of friendship, growing up and changing, and never giving up. One of the most enjoyable elements of this series is watching the progression as the characters learn and evolve. Ichigo has a tendency to be really cocky, especially at the start of the series, but as time goes on and he learns more about the world he’s in, he changes and becomes more willing to listen to the advice given to him by other characters. His friends also continue to grow and progress along with him. Additionally, there is a change in the art style of the characters as the story progresses, which makes it easy to see how they have changed as they all get older. There were two elements about this series that I disliked. The first was that I felt the ending was a bit rushed, and there were some things that I was a bit confused about. However, I recognize that the author was sick and so that attributed to the way things ended. The other element that I disliked was the sheer number of characters in the series by the end. Many of the characters that I thought were dead or gone ended up coming back, and I had to try and remember who they all were. I definitely think I needed to make myself a character sheet with information about each character to help me remember everyone in the end. In terms of assessing age appropriateness for this series, I would say that it’s an okay series for middle school and up. A couple of considerations to keep in mind when deciding if it’s right for you: 1. There is some violence (which is common for shonen mangas), including some elements of body horror, but it’s not too bad. 2. There is no sexual content, although many of the women are drawn disproportionately (which is common in manga written by men). 3. The main character is fifteen years old at the start of the series and only gets older as it progresses. And 4. The themes are a bit mature in that they require some deeper level thinking in order to fully understand them all. Overall, I enjoyed this series for its interesting premise, and would definitely recommend it to those who enjoy the traditional shonen manga.

I liked how this volume opened with Chad defeating an Arrancar and gaining his respect. I liked how the Arrancar even tried warning Chad to run when a dangerous Espada appeared. I think this volume did a great job at showing Nnoitra’s strength and menacing personality, especially by the way he treats his most loyal Fracción. I loved Rukia’s fight with Arroniero. I love the storyline of Arroniero taking the form of Kaien (Rukia’s fallen friend) and using her guilt to disarm her and toy with her emotions. I loved when Rukia realized that the thing wearing Karin’s face is not him. It was awesome finally seeing Rukia in action using all her Soul Reaper abilities, and it was so satisfying seeing her be the first one to kill an Espada, especially in the way that she does it. This volume really does an excellent job at bringing a conclusion to Rukia’s storyline with Kaien, and I loved watching her kill Aaroniero, who died in a fittingly brutal and pitiful way. This volume cemented Rukia as one of my favourite characters in the entire series.
